Thank you so much for this interview. I have been so negative about the voices such as John Mearshrimer, Noam Chomsky, and Jeffrey Sachs that seek to dilute our clarity about what is really going on with Russia, Ukraine and the West. All of them seem to focus on the narrative of a US engineered coup as the inciting event to this tragedy. We need more voices like Anna's. Love to her!

Stephen Kotkin some time back made the distinction between being European and being Western. Being Western in our time means having a certain set of democratic values and institutions which originated in the West, but is not limited to it; being European is a matter of geography, history and ethnicity. Kotkin describes Japan and South Korea as now Western, although not European. Russia, Kotkin observes, is European but not Western. What dawned on me listening to Anna is that Ukraine is both European and mostly (and increasingly) Western. At some level Putin knows that too, and that fact terrifies him.

Culture and 'mentality' is such a fascinating and often puzzling subject. Why are the people even in neighboring countries often so different in their outlook and attitudes? Explaining the values we have in common, is so much easier than to explain then the differences.
I find it astounding, that Ukraine, a country (or 'a people', before they became an actual recognized, independent country) that has been 'through the wringer' so often in the last couple hundred years still has such an intact sense of identity and such a clear and shared vision, of what they want and why.
I mean, 'the West' has tried to drag other countries/cultures towards what we consider 'the light', kicking and screaming and unsuccessful more often then not, so many times. Occasionally even with disastrous consequences, leaving things worse off then they were (looking at you America).
And here we have a country, that would have every excuse to be/act 'broken' and just resign to it's fate, but instead they just won't give up fighting for the right to join 'Club Europe', so to speak.
But I'm not sure, if you can ever really understand a country, without actually living there, learning the language and immersing yourself in the culture.

A fantastic interview with an incredible guest. It's become a bit of a regular occurrence on this channel, so I pretty much anticipated it. Anyway, thank you Jonathan and Anna.
One thought about the so called Russian "opposition". The simple truth behind Russians not rallying against tyranny is that the overwhelming majority simply isn't inclined to. They don't see it as necessary or appealing. I believe those who talk about the Russian opposition and pin their hopes for a brighter future on it are either totally ignorant or delusional. The Russian mentality is that of a obedient serf, if not a slave, and this is unlikely to shift unless the Russian "federation" breaks apart. It's the only scenario, in my opinion, that might give at least a tiny change for things to move toward something positive.

He was the one who renewed the lease for the Black Sea fleet in Sevastopol with his infamous "Kharkiv Pact"when it was decided by Ukraine not to renew it by President Yushchenko. (He was the one who also was poisoned)
    from Wikipedia - Kharkiv Pact
"During the presidency of Victor Yushchenko (January 2005 - February 2010) the Ukrainian government declared that the lease would not be extended and that the fleet would have to leave Sevastopol by 2017

Anna is a national treasure for Ukraine but not necessarily an easy person to interview, however your persistence paid off and the result was spectacular, for you and particularly Anna. I have followed her daily vlogs almost since she began, have watched her grow and mature into a very effective voice for Ukraine over that time, but always sensed that there was something missing, hinted at occasionally but not fully revealed. The last few minutes of this interview were exceptional beyond measure, a powerful manifestation of the trust between you, and a very moving example of what it means to truly know and understand the real price of freedom in our imperfect world. Outstanding, both of you! Thank you.

This war began back in 1992 when Muscovy tried to annex Crimea for the first time. And it was planned since the moment when Muscovy, Ukraine and Belarus signed the dissolution of the USSR on 8 December 1991 in Bělovežska Pusča. Of which criminal intent always drunk Boris Yeltsin immediately blabbed to Leonid Kravchuk once they went out for a smoke.

I am Czech living now for 9 years in Norway. There absolutely is corruption here and a lot of it. Actually as Czech I would say pretty similar amount, but differently looking and behaving. My life experience is that money and power corrupt people the same way everywhere. There is only One Ring of corruption and it works the same on all humans! No country has true right to say some other country is more or less corrupt. But we do must help each other and exchange experience in the never ending struggle against corruption. And it absolutely will never end.

Corruption is everywhere. In richer countries like mine - Germany - we tend not to see it as corruption. It's often just the question how You see it.

The Russian dream? Indoor plumbing!😅😂😊 American culture is a melting pot. I wouldn't necessarily call it great in fact it has many problems. We have people who move here to be free and I am talking about legal immigrants. And then they feel homesick and they want to make it more like where they came from. If you really feel that we should change our country be more like where you came from go home. You come here embrace the opportunity that means you try to assimilate. That does not mean you forget where you came from and your memories. Keep those precious memories I would never ask you to throw them away. Remember the reasons you came here. I know that America can be kind of chaotic at times. I also know that Americans fight amongst each other. But if you want to confront this country you will find a country United against you. You may see us as divided but we are not we are free and we say what we want to say without consequences. That is not division that is an exchange of ideas. Sometimes they can get downright messy but that's just the way it is.

Nice to see Anna on regarding Maidan and how it started as a lot of right wing populist talk about the war being about NATO expansion and Russia having a tie over this, Operator Starsky also did a blog about this

A great talk. It's very refreshing to hear her talk with so much energy. It teaches us in the west the real precious value of a vivid society (that western countries themselves loose more more). This society is at stake and threatened by evil. That's why they don't waste their energy for bullshit like we all do who live in security and stable environments. This is why Ukraine right now is the heart of western democracies. Thank You for transporting that to us all!

Indeed. I find it very disheartening, that these days challenges or even a common enemy, seems to further fracture and weaken our Western societies. There's something very wrong going on, if people in a society don't have that reflex of 'sticking together' and supporting each other in times of trouble anymore. We're
lacking a healthy and productive kind of patriotism. Not to mention competent and inspiring leaders.

I understand her view on Russian "dissidents". When you had Felshtinsky on he mentioned how many Russians there now is in Eastern European countries and the Baltic states, and I felt dread by the thought of it. Some of them are in Finland protesting "russiaphobia" and calling for open borders.
