How to Restore Reset a Macbook Pro A1706 to Factory Settings ║OS X High Sierra

This is a video on how to perform a hard reset factory restore on a Macbook Pro A1706 running Mac OS X High Sierra.
Steps
1. Power off the Macbook
2. Power it on and hold "Command" key and "S" key at the same time.
3. Hold until the black screen with all the coding appears.
4. Type in the following
mount -uw / (hit Enter)
rm /var/db/.applesetupdone (hit Enter)
shutdown -h now (hit Enter)
5. The Macbook will power off, so just power it back on.
6. Congrats if you got this far your Macbook should have been reset.

I have an old 2009 Mac on High Sierra and no matter what I do I can't format it to factory and since my Dad passed away I don't have the original disks or any OS product key. I use the Command + R to get into the boot utility to reinstall it and come up with the same programs installed as were on before, it didn't reset to factory. Any tips?

So I did everything that you said, the weird codes appeared, I typed the this that were in the description but when I turned in on again the MacBook didn't reset...it stayed normal (with my user and same files) Do you know why? Did I did something wrong?

Yes, I tried it too and all it did was create another admin user. the best way is to use Disk Utility and erase your hard drive and then restore your operating system.

If you have FileVault enabled, it will load after logging in to your user. If you don't, you likely have a firmware password on the computer. You can find this out by starting up holding the Option key and see if there's a lock with a field for a password.
I don’t know why but every time I would power it off and hold command and s and then powered it on it showed the black screen for a second but just powered on like normal

It's a good hack, but it doesn't always work. The alternative is to target disk mode it to an other Mac. Format it from there and then reinstall macOS from a usb.

Unfortunately .... is just straight way of giving all your data to anyone :) doesn’t delete anything it simply resets your initial first boot welcome screen, all profiles and all data are perfectly intact on the hard drive and even more accessible to anyone who touch your laptop, check your drive size and check in the settings the list of users :) sorry for a thumbs down... is a complete misleading video

April 2023 I just tried it. It kind of worked and kind of didn’t. I still have to enter my password and my profile is still up, but it did reset it so I have to enter language country etc

Dude you need to be more specific in the comment section. Its not going to work unless you type it correctly so put it correctly down there too!
big sur does not allow to factory reset and its mind boggling
Well, you shouldn’t really try to unlock it yourself and trying something which you don’t know as it might do some extra bit damage. You can just take it to any Apple Store, or Apple Reseller or any authenticated Tech Guy Like *MOE* where they sell MacBook They’ll just log onto iTunes on their Mac and your problem should be resolved in 10-15 minutes. They effort required is very less, it’s just about knowing the thing that you’re doing. *MOE* charges are less. By the way, technically they shouldn’t ask for anything as it isn’t a laborious work at all so if you argue enough with them, they might not charge you.
But also, they will ask you for the Apple ID and Password. So, it would be better to change the password after the work has been done just for security purposes..

So if a Thief gets a hold of the MacBook he could easily do this and you wouldn’t even be able to track them ?
