    IF YOU'RE NOT RETURNING OR SELLING YOUR COMPUTER.... I'm guessing you want to keep using it with a new OS installed. Not to worry. Here are the steps to bring it back from the dead:
    *Force Shut Down:* Hold the Power button for 10 seconds until your Mac shuts down completely.
    *Boot into Recovery Mode:* Press the Power button again and immediately press and hold the Command (⌘) + R keys. Keep holding them until you see the Apple logo appear.
    *Release Keys:* Once you see the Apple logo or a loading bar, release the keys. You should now see the macOS Utilities screen, indicating successful entry into Recovery mode.
    From here, you have a few options depending on the cause of the boot issue:
    *Repair the Startup Disk:* Use Disk Utility to diagnose and potentially fix disk errors that might be preventing your Mac from booting normally.
    *Reinstall macOS:* If repairing the disk doesn't work, you can reinstall macOS, effectively giving your Mac a fresh OS installation.
    That should reinstall the OS and get you going again. Please let me know how it goes.

      @@user-pm4hg1nj1h Hi Lisa, seems like you've got some challenges. Namely, understanding what this video is about and what it is meant to cover.
      Rather than "Karen" the whole thing, how about telling me where you need help? Provide me some details. Your computer is fine, but I'm guessing you're using this tutorial to re-install the OS and continue using the computer. That's not what this video is about. That requires extra steps.
      This video doesn't mislead anyone into thinking those extra steps are provided. This video is to wipe your computer clean for resell or return.
      Please refer to the first pinned comment above, the same one you commented on, and follow those steps if you're trying to continue to use your computer. If you also deleted your partition, you'll need to create a new one.
      If you can't find a TH-cam video to help, or can't figure it out yourself, leave me some information that I can work with and I'll see what I can do.

      Hi @dasfreutmich1, I'm glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Signing out of iCloud, or your Apple ID is actually accomplished by two things. One is when you de-authorize the computer you are basically telling Apple that that computer is no longer authorized to use your Apple ID or iCloud. The next thing that helps is by signing out of find my and messenger. I hope that helps answer your question. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    This was sooooo helpful and easy to follow along. I could not find anyone else showing all of the log out and deauthorize steps, except your video! I wish you would make a newer version, though, as I am doing this a year later and a number of things have changed. I had already upgraded the laptop from Ventura to Sonoma to sell it. However, after erasing it, now I have to reactivate it and reinstall Ventura. I will then have to log back into Apple to upgrade it to Sonoma, again. Now, I am not sure how to just wipe it to sell without erasing the hard drive, again. But, super helpful, as I mentioned with all of the first steps you have to do! Thanks!

    Upon doing the steps in this video, I got the dreaded blinking question mark folder like others in the comments. Here's what worked for me after a long time of researching - First, create a bootable USB with Ventura th-cam.com/video/QO3GoMfqOzc/w-d-xo.html. Then, install Ventura on the bricked Mac th-cam.com/video/IvZdu5omug4/w-d-xo.html. I would create the bootable USB with the latest OS compatible with your Mac if Ventura isn't compatible.

      Hi @grantfrankfurt7698, I'm glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. The answer to the question of why people are getting the blinking "?" is because they are deleting the partition along with formatting the drive.
      If you delete the partition, you have to add the partition back and then format the drive. If you just format the drive, you won't run into the blinking "?".
      I hope that helps.

      Hi ISO, thank you for asking. The problem is that your drive has not been formatted. So, your computer does not see it and gives you the folder with the question mark.
      To fix this, when you boot into Internet recovery, go to disk utility and format your drive. Be sure to back up everything on your drive because this will completely erase all data. I hope this helps. By chance have you considered subscribing to my channel? Cheers.

    • @358studios
      @358studios  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard, thank you for asking. There’s a couple things to look at. The blinking? Means that your computer doesn’t recognize the drive. It sounds like you formatted the drive, but maybe also deleted the partition. You may need to add the partition back. That seems to be happening to a lot of people.
      Also, double check that you have an SSD drive and not a spinning hard drive. APFS is good for SSD drives and Mac journaled is better for spinning hard drives.
      Please let me know how it goes. Happy to help.

    Hi. I was following your step by step instructions and now I have a blinking question mark folder. Whatever I have tried to do didn’t help, and I still can’t install new OS Sierra . This laptop should be for sale. Can I do something at this point? I have read all the comments, doesn’t make any sense

    • @358studios
      @358studios  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there, sorry to hear about that. Quick question how old is your computer? The blinking question mark means that you have not formatted the drive that is in the system so that it can see the drive and reinstall the operating system. Typically this happens when you delete, by accident, the partitions. See if you can open up Disk Utility and format the drive that is there.
      You'll need to open Options or Internet Recovery before you see the blinking question mark. Please feel free to give me some more detail about your computer and I'll see if I can help further.
      Thanks,
      Sean

    Why do I need to transfer everything to a drive or Time Machine. Will it delete everything from my iPhone too since it’s the same iCloud or just delete it from my MacBook if I don’t use a drive or time machine

    • @358studios
      @358studios  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @alexisrodriguez113, thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. You don't need to transfer anything to a drive or Time Machine unless you want to do a back up. I always recommend that you back up everything unless you are storing all of your important files in the cloud already (like me. Nothing resides on my computer systems).
      By resetting your Mac to factory settings and reloading the operating system you are not deleting anything from any of your other devices or iCloud. You're simply removing that computer from the devices that are connected to your Apple ID. I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

    I watched another video before I found yours but now my MacBook is completely locked up from his instructions. A white screen with a circle in the middle with a line through it. Is there a way to get rid of this and try your method? Thanks.

    • @358studios
      @358studios  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi @kerrylittle3900, thank you for asking. I appreciate it.
      You are getting the no equal sign because your Mac is unable to find a valid startup disk. This happens sometimes because people accidentally delete a partition or wipe the whole disk and in doing so the computer can't find the operating system. That's exactly what we want from this video (so we can sell or return the Mac). However, when you are trying to continue using your Mac and you just want to clean it up a bit, that's not such a great thing.
      Here's how you reinstall the operating system.
      First, we need to boot your Mac into recovery mode.
      Turn your mac off (press and hold power button) or Restart... at restart press and hold Command and R. For older Macs this will boot your Mac into Recovery Mode.
      If that doesn't work, depending on the age of your Mac, you may need to press and hold Option, Command, and R. All at the same time. This can be a timing thing, so don't get frustrated. You will get it.
      For newer Macs with the M1, M2 or M3 chip, you just press and hold the power button until options comes up on the screen.
      Open Disk Utility (sometimes found in options or the onscreen menu). Here, you click on the main disk at the top left corner of the screen, and then click on First Aid. Click OK to look for any errors.
      OK, now that we know it's probably not an error with your disk, we are going to reinstall the OS.
      If you can, back out to the Recovery Menu and choose Reinstall OS. If not, shutdown and go through the initial steps again to access Recovery Mode. Then click on Reinstall OS. Follow the prompts and that should reinstall your OS.
      I hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes.

I have been carrying around external drives and booting from numerous different Macintosh's since the 90s. CCCloner was my go to for decades. I used someone else's instructions for erasing my MacBook with OS High Sierra. I erased the MacIntosh HD & the OS system. Currently there is a white screen with a circle and a \ through it. Does this mean all the data is erased and is ready to give away or sell? I restarted and from the Apple on top left I clicked on Startup Disk. I asked me to select the system I want to use to start up my computer. The only thing showing to choose from is OS x Base system Encrypted Disk. It asked for a password which I did and now no systems show to choose from on the startup Disk screen. As I mentioned previously, I had erased the MacIntosh HD so it doesn't show. I have no idea if all my information is wiped or not at this point.

    • @358studios
      @358studios  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @comfypjs, thank you for asking. I appreciate it. Yes, your information should be erased, although I can't guarantee it as I'm not sure what steps you followed from the other folks.
      The white screen with the no equal circle means that your system cannot find a startup disc or the operating system. Typically that happens because the disk has been erased or has an error. You could double check the data size by looking at the disk in recovery mode and disk utility.
      You sound like you may already be familiar with how to get to recovery mode but here's some help below.
      To boot your Mac into recovery mode.
Here, you click on the main disk or the other disk (a partition below the main) and take a look at the size of the information it has stored on it.
      If you're see numbers that have a Kb or even numbers that have MB after them you probably don't have any significant data left on your drive. I'm going from memory so hopefully that helps. Don't mix up the total drive size with the amount of data stored. Look at the availability and that should give you ideal of how much disk space is being used.
      I hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes.

      Hi @standswithpeace, I'm glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. You're correct. It seems some people want to wipe their system clean and continue to use it after. Not sell or return. No worries. As you suggested, here are the steps to bring it back from the dead:

      Let me try to elaborate, if not. You can format your drive, using Internet, recovery and disk utility. You can look for partitions in Disk Utility, and if there are none, you can create one. By the way, it sounds like you want to use your computer the wipe. If so, please see my pinned comments at the top of the comment box for how to reinstall the operating system.
      If you end up deleting your partition along the way, you'll need to add a partition as well. I hope all that makes sense. Good luck and please let me know if you get stuck anywhere along the way.

    • @358studios
      @358studios  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, can you give me more detail? Like when does this occur? Are you able to get to startup options? Is Disk Utility the only one with a circle and a line through it, and everything else shows (Recovery, Reinstall, Safari)?
      Normally, the circle with a line through it happens when there is an operating system found on the disk that is not compatible with that particular Mac. For example, if you tried to use an external drive with Big Sur to boot a new Mac.
      Try unplugging everything from your Mac and reboot. See if that helps get you into Disk Utility.
      Please let me know how it goes.

    Almost helpful... Unfortunately, "Command + R" does not work on my refurb 2012 Mac Pro. How can I re-stall Catalina 10.15.7 if I can't get Mac into Recovery Mode? Hi Wasp, no problem. Thank you for asking. I appreciate it. The reason you're getting the blinking question mark is that your computer doesn't recognize a formatted drive where it can install the OS. This is easily fixed by using the disk utility to format the drive before you ask it to reinstall the OS.
      Do you know if your drive is an SSD or HHD. The format you pick will matter (a little) depending. Use AFFS for the SSD and use Mac OS Extended Journaled for the HHD.

      Hi Mark, that's going to be an Intel based iMac. You'll need to use Internet Recovery to clear the computer and re-install the OS. Here's the instructions from the Apple website. Good luck.
      Start up your Intel-based Mac in macOS Recovery
      Restart your Mac.
      Immediately press and hold one of the following key combinations until you see the startup screen:
      Command-R: Start up from the built-in macOS Recovery System. Use this key combination to reinstall the latest macOS that was installed on your system, or to use the other apps in macOS Recovery.
      Option-Command-R: Start up from macOS Recovery over the internet. Use this key combination to reinstall macOS and upgrade to the latest version of macOS that’s compatible with your Mac.
      Option-Shift-Command-R: Start up from macOS Recovery over the internet. Use this key combination to reinstall the version of macOS that came with your Mac or the closest version that’s still available.
      If you see a lock, enter the password for your Mac.
      If you have multiple volumes on your disk, select the volume you want to recover, then click Next.
      If requested, choose an administrator account, click Next, enter the password for the account, then click Continue.
      When the Recovery app appears in the menu bar, you can choose any of the available options in the window or the menu bar.

      Hi Josh, I've noticed Apple has been more selective with who access is their servers lately. It seems they are not giving priority to older operating system requests.
      However, a couple of things you can double check to make sure it's not on your end. Make sure you're on a clean Internet connection, without a firewall. That means avoid public connections or connections at work. Typically those have a firewall behind them that will slow down or restrict access. Apple doesn't play well with firewalls.
      The other is to double check your Wi-Fi connection with speedtest.net before you start. You may have to use another system for this.
      Please let me know how it goes.

    Yeah, don’t do this. This will totally brick your Mac and make a very tedious OS reinstall

      Hi @Toothbresh, I'm glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Brick, your Mac that's pretty funny. This does not do anything to your hardware. It only completely removes everything to do with the previous owner. It's going to make a very tedious reinstall, since that's always the case and reinstalls never happen quickly (those with a slow Internet connection know what I'm talking about). Tedious gets even better if you don't follow the steps correctly and you accidentally delete a partition versus just formatting the drive.
      For all those out there, reading this comment, to fix that problem all you have to do is create a partition. Thanks again for commenting it gives me a chance to clarify even further for those others who may be struggling.

      Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment. Yeah even with a factory reset, data wipe, refresh or whatever you wanna call, it you still gotta reinstall the operating system. That is been consistent for 30 years for both Mac or PC.
      Fortunately, Apple makes that really easy. All you got to do is have a decent Internet connection.
      cheers.

    Hi Sean, I followed these steps on my MacBook Air (about 2014 era) and now I am getting an error when the laptop is loading after the restart. The loading screen starts and there is a little ghostbuster 🚷 sign instead of the Apple and it is stuck on this screen. Any advice?

    • @358studios

      Hi @jamieowen5858, thank you for asking. I wish everyone on TH-cam was as pleasant as you are. That was such a nice way to ask. I appreciate it. :)

      Hi there, your question mark is not a deal breaker. That means your computer can’t find the drive because it isn’t recognizable. Not because it isn’t in the computer, but because if you followed the video you reset everything (including the drive)
      You likely need to format the drive or recreate the main partition. Both of those options are available via the disk utility menu in options when you restart the computer. Please let me know how it goes and I will do my best to help.

    STOP! Only format your drive. Do Not Delete your partition.

      If we did delete the partition by mistake what steps should we take in order to fix it?

    • @358studios
      @358studios  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Michaeldog25.

      Hey there happy person. You seem to be in the habit of bashing people before you have all of your information straight. I’m guessing you did not follow my directions to the letter. It sounds like you deleted the partition instead of just formatting the partition. I’d be happy to help, but I’ve already answered this in the thread below and given how you might take the information, I’ll let you research it yourself. A better attitude would have definitely saved you several hours of searching around. Have a good day. Cheers.

      Hi @MatthewMeyer-bl2ef, thank you for asking. I appreciate it. If only I had a dollar for every comment like this. As I mention in the video, this video is not for you to continue using your computer but instead is for you to completely erase your personal information so that you can return or sell your computer to a third-party. Please take a look at my comments below and you will get the reinstallation instructions for your operating system so that you can continue using your computer.
