How we can bring mental health support to refugees | Essam Daod

  • The global refugee crisis is a mental health catastrophe, leaving millions in need of psychological support to overcome the traumas of dislocation and conflict. To undo the damage, child psychiatrist and TED Fellow Essam Daod has been working in camps, rescue boats and the shorelines of Greece and the Mediterranean Sea to help refugees (a quarter of which are children) reframe their experiences through short, powerful psychological interventions. "We can all do something to prevent this mental health catastrophe," Daod says. "We need to acknowledge that first aid is not just needed for the body, but it has also to include the mind, the soul."

    I don't know why people consider this a more political talk than usual. He speaks about a global problem occurring right now and a solution to the specific problem of people that are in need of psychological help. He doesn't speak about opening borders or fixing Syria.

    the reason people use things like children in their examples is to find common ground and start a dialogue. That's why they do it. It is an age old psychological trick meant to destroy barriers and foster dialogue.

    The biggest modern problem with the health industry is logistics. The technology and techniques are there, to save lives and cure mental illness, but delivering them to the people who need them the most is the challenge. Diagnostics is probably a runner-up, in terms of challenge.
    The more likely you are to need mental health support (for instance, if you are a child escaping a war-torn nation), the less likely you are to be in a position to find that support, ask for that support, or be garnered that support. A willingness is there to deliver the world's increasingly cheap and available medicine to those who need it, but the delivery systems are either underdeveloped or have been made prohibitively expensive by financial institutions serving as gatekeepers.

    • @Cerbyo
      @Cerbyo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I saw a cat run over on the side of the street. And I wondered what I could or should do. It was clearly dead though. What if I could pay 1 dollar to make that cat be alive still...? Wut about 10 dollars? I'd pay every penny. People are brainwashed with the belief that if they save that cat, they'll have to save every cat. That more cats will flock in and they'll be fucked. Yet they setup go fund me accounts and give money to pay for medical bills of people they know or in their community...it defies all logic. Why should popular people get their bills paid? Because They are being productive about seeking welfare...? Wut? lol.
      Do what you feel is right. Unfortunately we as a community can do much greater work than we can as individuals, that is why people try to force their beliefs on eachother. That said, the opposite is true for people seeking to deny these actions, since we can do more damage as a community than we ever could as individuals :)

      oh yeah In Sweden, the country where i’ve from and live, a report was recently published stating that the average cost for a single refugee per year lied at 70 000kr which is equal to about $7900. Because of this fact the Swedish government spending capital on helping refugees has left us in a deficit where some of our money is going to. So overall it’s not stimulating the economy at all, it’s just taking money away.

That is exactly why helping his organization out, will help your point with which you are arguing against him.

    • @Cerbyo
      @Cerbyo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What if I told you that bringing people in and helping them generated more money than helping our own citizens did? Could you grasp why that might actually be the case? Or are you headfirst stuck in the pit of idealogy that immigrants are liabilities? There are some in europe where they didn't create the infrastructure to deal with a sudden migration of people turning up in the streets. the video is about the idea of putting the infrastructure inplace ahead of time, to reap the benefits of immigration upfront when it occurs. Everyone wins when that happens....even those people suffering who are already citizens, there will be more money for social services to help them. If the state commits, there is no reason why immigration can't directly help the poor of ur existing country. That might not make sense to people if ur just seeing old people given free healthcare, but overall the numbers don't lie.
