The nightmare videos of childrens' YouTube - and what's wrong with the internet today | James Bridle

  • Writer and artist James Bridle uncovers a dark, strange corner of the internet, where unknown people or groups on TH-cam hack the brains of young children in return for advertising revenue. From "surprise egg" reveals and the "Finger Family Song" to algorithmically created mashups of familiar cartoon characters in violent situations, these videos exploit and terrify young minds -- and they tell us something about where our increasingly data-driven world is headed. "We need to stop thinking about technology as a solution to all of our problems, but think of it as a guide to what those problems actually are, so we can start thinking about them properly and start to address them," Bridle says.

My_ Dog that’s not inherently bad. my brothers (3 and 5) each have their own tablet on which they play nice games and watch netflix and disney plus, actual good content. they also watch youtube but because the older one grew out of weird content he just watches these kiddy gaming videos and the younger one ended up watching the same thing then. they’re allowed to watch as they eat as long as they do eat

Sadly I was a victim of this
I remember I was watching Dora. Everything was fine at first but then it turned into gore and bloody scenes. I remember Dora was killing boots and her family and eating them. I screamed and cried. Then my dad scolded me for watching that video. I was literally a toddler I didn't know anything. I never saw that video again. Then my dad got TH-cam kids. It wasn't better. Those videos were still there and I got more and more terrified. I am a teen now and I still have those traumatic videos stuck in my head. Please parents don't give your child a ipad at such a young age like my parents did to me. You can't control what your child watched because it comes out of nowhere. Whoever did these videos are monsters and terrible people for playing around with childrens feelings like that. I recommend giving your child their iPad at a older age so they know what they are doing. If your child wants to see cartoons. You can always get the nick Jr app or put it on tv, but please don't give devices to your child at a young age.

Thank you, dear......I'm so sorry that you experienced such horror......I don't let my toddler son watch You Tube kids, I've made an account but never executed it, and my ex brought him an iPad but I stopped giving it to him, and I keep it uncharged. I've noticed that my ex let his son watch some weird things on his iPad, (we don't share no kids together) and he had my son's viewing attached to his son's (same accounts)........NOPE. I definitely NOW know what's going on with YT kids, and my baby will NOT be apart of it. It'd bad enough that things pop up on MY feed that I'm totally not interested in and I'm a grown woman. TH-cam isn't just on iPads. It's on your smartphones and tablets and computer. The best advice I could give is make sure the videos your children are watching are safe. Ideally stay away from the React channel, Bright side, happy tree friends, Jacksepticeye, Markiplier, PewDiePie, Robot Chicken, YTP, ect. Also watch your children when they're using their devices. Show your kids PBS kids. Keep violent video games out of the house until they're are 17 years or older.

In my household we have a “No TH-cam..period” rule. At first we thought it was harmless - after all we were very strict to make sure our child was watching kid appropriate content. Before long our 4yr old became interested in watching “open toys” and “family play”videos. An almost immediate change in behavior took place. He stopped wanting to actually have real family play time & anytime the Screen Time limit was up, he would throw the most uncharacteristic, emotional bloody-murder-tantrum I have ever witnessed. It would last well into the rest of the day. Needless to say, it was eye opening enough that we dramatically changed our Screen Time rules. TH-cam is OUT! In fact no more 3min instant gratification vids anywhere (prime has them too). We lean toward learning vids like Leap Frog Reading, a limited time period of his favorite cartoon, shows that teach character (like Owlegories or Veggietales) or we’ll splurge on a full length, parent-pre-screened family movie.
Bottom line, every parent should watch this Ted talk and take it seriously. I think there’s something to the dopamine release kids get w/these sorts of vids. I’m not so sure screen time is so good for us either - we’re even considering getting rid of the TV altogether. Save yourself a lot of headaches, turn off the TV, pick up a book and start your kids on a path to a love for reading.

Fantastic work there! Although I don't know most of the show names that you have mentioned there because I am from India where we are doing our cultural bit to save our kids from this stupid and idiotic nonsense called TH-cam kids' videos. I am sure the shows mentioned by you are culturally pertinent and well meaning from where you come.
The one thing extremely good about old school parenting is that no matter how many tantrums that kids would throw back then, the parents would have none of it and wouldn't yield to such nasty juvenile behaviour. The kids would cry themselves dry and then abide by what was being laid down as a rule. Those kids are some really successful and prosperous individuals of the society today.

It drives me nuts because the same parents are happy as long as their kids are inside on a computer. Not to mention what constant access and not playing outside does to them physically, emotionally and intellectually.

Yes and it highlights the real problem - that we let machine algorithms define how our societies work, instead of taking charge of them ourselves. We are willingly handing over our position of power to the hands of some invisible force that can not be argued or debated with, someone out of political and diplomatic reach. A force driven purely from basic mathematical profit and exposure mentality.
Kids see the apparent flaws, but it extends to everyone. We are all impacted by this for better or worse.

Tbh me being very well aware that there's so many things that can damage your kid's mental health without your control or even your knowledge is one of the reasons why I don't think I'm ready to have children. Kids are always gonna be a couple of generations away from you and that means that as society evolves it's harder every time to even know what's happening to them. My parents had me older than usual so there's a big age gap between us and I'm aware now as a young adult of how little knowledge they had on not only the technology I used and have been using since I had access to a computer, but also on the societal norms and pressures that were present in my social circles. I was bullied for several years without them knowing, for motives they couldn't even understand completely. It's not that they didn't care, in fact my parents lean on the overprotective side, it's just that they simply didn't know better.
So it's not as simple as that we have careless parents and children-less people who care, it's most like there some of us who, the more aware we become of the world we live in, the less willing to bring children into it we are, and then many parents are simply not fully educated on the world their own children live in. That's why the presenter made so much emphasis in this technology being understandable and in we as a society being very well educated not only on how this technology works, but on the societal issues that it shows us

And yet, a kid “happened” to me 12 years ago because this is how nature and destiny wanted it and I decided not to be a jerk and screw everything up. And I must say even though it is scary, my child is one of the most happy and balanced ones around, and light years away more so in 2022 than me at her age in 1988. Yes, the world is crazier, but those of us who’re inclined to it can also be way more informed than back then, so we can be way smarter and wiser. When given unconditional love, attention, proper communication and so on, children can be actually very resilient and prepared for whatever’s coming (and there have always been high risks involved anyway, including in the Middle Ages and in the Stone Age 😛). But from your tough childhood (which looks similar to mine) and apparent understand of things, it seems you’d make a very good dad! 😉

This is exactly why I refuse to raise my future children to be "tablet kids". It's so easy to just put a phone or tablet in front of a kid and have it loop videos for hours instead of actually parenting your child.
Also, unpopular opinion that's kinda off subject. But I hate the fact the FNAF (Five Nights At Freddy's) is being marketed towards children even though it's a horror game. There's literally FNAF books in the children's book section at the store I work at. I don't mean to sound like a boomer, but I don't believe children should be consuming any type of horror.

Guess R.L Stein is some kind of maniac in your eyes! I think horror is a natural interest kids have at ages where they’re exploring their place in the world, because many things are new and scary and horror is a way to safely and healthily explore those fears- it’s the same reason adults watch horror tbh. It definitely depends on the kid but age appropriate horror is fine! Goosebumps was and is massively popular for a reason, so is FNAF. There’s nothing overtly gross in FNAF and most of its supernatural in nature to tbh its far more tame than it’s made out to be. Obviously you can govern your children however but I don’t see any reason to cull an interest in exploring horror and fear just because they’re a kid.

That is eye opening and frightening because what children see and hear before the age of 8 molds their unconscious belief systems, attitudes, and feelings about their environments and themselves. It takes a lifetime , sometimes, to unlearn and undo the damage. Parents have waaaaay tooooooo much power and control in this world. Parents are creating the children's and society's future.

As a career nanny, I am SO intentional about any TV time the parents allow. There are 3, maybe 4 TV shows that I’ve seen many times and approve of and with small children who can’t even pay attention to a full 20 min episode, I use TH-cam kids to watch clips from those shows and maybe a few choice Blippi videos. That’s it, and the kids don’t touch the phone. If they are allowed to hold the phone and watch, I can screen grab 2 or 3 videos, make a photo album on my phone with just those videos in it and lock it on that app so they can’t do anything else. This this scares me so much and new parents, especially, have no idea what seemingly harmless scrolling can lead to

I’m 17 and grew up in a place where my family was among the first people in the middle east to have an ipad, and I was about 5 when that happened. I am beyond grateful I grew up at a time when animation was not as easy to make so we had to consume media made by real qualified animators and cartoon makers. Now that I’m a little older, I’ve noticed my younger sister and younger cousins (who all had ipads since the day they exited the womb) all have this addiction to their phones and talk about adult subjects which even I still hesitate to talk about to this day. It’s truly a scary world out there and I’m glad we have people like James and other people in this comments section who are noticing this odd behavior in children that are a result of videos like these. I’ve already decided that my future kids will not have an ipad until they are old enough to think logically before making decisions and I hope everyone else does this too. Thank you for this talk James.

James is my new hero. This was a brilliant speech about a topic I have been addressing for years among other parents. When the screen becomes the babysitter, the parent, the educator, the guide to life and behaviour, wouldn't you want that to be monitored by you instead of leaving it into the hands of strangers? Most parents ar thrilled to leave their kids in front of a screen all day, as it keeps them "calm". I am instead terrified, knowing what it does to small developing brains and within ten years I predict we will see all the negative aspects of this coming with full force from a generation that was abandoned in a sea of strangers and with no understanding that they needed to fight to get out, or given the tools to do so.

  • @rubensmejl

Starting out as a new parent I used TH-cam for my oldest (now 3 years). To get a brake and having it in the background. At first he looked at it sporadically, but after a while that was all he wanted to, and I felt it was hampering his development and he got sucked into the TV or pad.
So I quit TH-cam. I still have a TV or music on the background, but at most it's science shows or kids news program and such produced by Swedish TV.
But mostly now a days I play music and instead of putting on the TV, I go out after kindergarten and play with them for 2-3 hours make a foodbox and eat with them outside until it's time to go to sleep.
The older one has really started to develop nicely, and is more social and plays better with kids. The smaller one (2 years) didn't get addicted to begin with.
It's awesome, we get to have adventures every day, and nobody misses the TV anymore and I have more energy (from 0 to 10%) by breathing fresh air and not being stuck inside with two toddlers where they obviously shouldn't be.

This is why my kids, if I have any, are going to be raised on Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Popeye The Sailor, Classic Disney, etc.
I'm already making a stance that my children, that don't even exist yet, are not going to have TH-cam for many years after the fact, and are actually going to be raised on the good stuff.
The cartoons that aren't meant for kids, like those I just listed above, are usually the better ones, and I'm so grateful that those cartoons are the ones I was raised on.

She first said it was nonsense and that I was exaggerating again, but my little sibbling (age 4) was watching as well. And when my sibbling recognized the clips shown, my mother started to listen to it. And when my little sibbling started to recognize the goofed up clips at the end, my mom decided to delete youtube kids and only let my sibbling watch real child shows like the ones on TV and Netflix.

I work with kids. we used to let them watch a video or have TH-cam kids open for up to 5 minutes as a reward up to 4 times a day. (The kids are there for 6hrs, aged 3 and older) We had to stop because certain kids would freak out when the timer was up, or they would hurry and change videos before the first one fully finished, trying to “trick us” into letting them watch more. No matter how many time warnings and all that they got, it often ended in a child being upset. We no longer use TH-cam as a reward. They can choose a song to listen to, but no looking at the screen besides (maybe) to pick the song.

This is a very important topic and I’m glad this speaker is starting this discussion. To all those sharing your stories, whether from the perspective of the parent or the child, I’d like to mention something. There has been a huge gap in understanding and connection between generations ever since technology really began developing. Even if parents are only trying to protect their kids, this may only lead to a continued lack of communication and honesty between a parent and a child. The child may begin to feel misunderstood, frustrated, and unheard by the parent when they begin to impose rules; I would know, as I experienced this myself. It’s only now that I’m older I can appreciate the censorship my parents put on my internet access. Please, if you are restricting your child’s internet access, don’t explain your reasoning with “because I said so” or “technology rots your brain”. All that will do is further frustrate your child and make it hard for them to see your good intentions. The last thing you want to do is become their enemy, because then all theyre going to do is try to find a way to outsmart or work around you. They will get good at lying and hiding, and will lose trust with you. Please, be honest with your kids, if they’ll listen. You’d be surprised what they’re willing to hear.

Bring friends to play etc. And if they want to play a horror game (me and my siblings watched horror movies with our family when we were very young) make sure they're truly okay with it and know what they're getting into and tell them what's realistic and not etc. You don't have to hide games and movies from them but make sure you let them use while you observe a lot. Ever since I became an adult, I've been insanely grateful about how supportive they were and the boundaries they set. I really don't care that I was made fun of for it. The effect of things like this on me would have been so much worse. I always did well in school and I remember a kid once saying "Imagine how clever [I] would have been with the internet". But also consider that Disney MUST actively go after copyright infringements or else they lose proper title and claim to their copyright. People have often complained that Disney is sue happy, but that's a legal decision not a moral one. They HAVE TO sue or else they cannot sue anyone anymore because their copyright becomes null and void.
Also consider that TH-cam, which is owned by Google, happily stamps down thousands of content creators. They have censored for covid, among other topics.
