Venetta was once an Ikette and was also a backing vocalist for Aretha Franklin, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Alice Cooper etc… I was blessed to have her as my singing teacher for many years. She taught me many things, not only about singing but also life lessons that I will cherish forever!

She is indeed a very lovely lady. I met her through a mutual acquaintance (Melvin Carol) who was also in Big River in Sydney back in 88 and we "hung out" together for a few months as Melvin and I shared a house. It was nothing serious. She was soon moving to Melbourne with BR and I was moving back to Brisbane. But I have fond memories and she taught several of my friend for years. We probably have some mutual acquaintances in the Gold Coast music scene.
She was one of three ladies doing backup on Lou Christie's song Lightning Strikes :)

I love that those who know and follow John Farnham are also very much aware of who sings with him - Lisa, Lindsay, Venetia. It's because John has made a point that we, the audience, know who these fabulous performers are.
When Vanetta just looks away smiling almost shaking her head as he has just held the most beautiful note .. they are sublime.

Vanetta Fields was once a singer with Ike & Tina Turner. The other is Lindsay Field (no relation). Both, along with Lisa Edwards, Were John’s backing vocalists for many years.
Vanetta also did back-up vocals on Alice Cooper album Lace and Whiskey
I had a girlfriend years ago that is friends with Lisa. Whenever she was in the area she would stay with us. I would frequently start making coffee in the morning then hear Lisa walking around the house, singing. Just magic.

I have a feeling that John may of had a big influence on her after her time spent with Tina and Ike. John showed her not all men were like Ike and showed her the respect she deserved and put her in the limelight to express herself fully and properly and also nudged her to get out and do things for herself while backing her up in the shadows.
I saw him live around time. This song was part of the show. Gave them a chance to catch their breath after some high energy songs.

@@rrr1063 and while perhaps not abusive, most of their attitudes were similar and overly demanding like his were. Ike was always at the back of her mind. And up till she met John, she thought all men were like that.
JF knew that his success needed others and wasn't arrogant like many singers who think it is all them. His upbringing and humility means that he isn't threatened about sharing his stage with the other great musicians working with him.
John Farnham is the king of letting others around him shine, he makes sure they get their time to shine.. He is one of the nicest blokes you will meet..
His Yacht broke down in Townsville in the 80s & we were fishing on the jetty, it was late nobody around & John came out & had a chat for a while... Awesome bloke, we never asked for an autograph or photo (no camera phones then lol).. He is just a genuine bloke who can sing amazingly.. Jimmy Barnes is the same..

Lindsey Field’s changed how I viewed the music industry. He is a kind and humble man. Also Johns music director for year’s. Amazing vocal coach Lisa sent me too him, which was crazy. I didn’t know who he was by name but I knew him as Johns backing vocalist. He opened his front door and invited me into his home. He handed me his guitar and told me to sing. Dude have you noticed where John, basically everyone holds their mic’s. Loud is an understatement. I and many others all love you for your Anzacs content. You gotta get you some Linda and Vicka Bull. Plus Joe Camilleri Black Sorrow’s. Then Archi Roach. Oh who can forget Boom Crash Opera. Dude Melbourne partied 8 nights a week plus. You could catch everyone jamming depending where you went. Gigging you could be playing in multiple bands. I miss Australia😓 So many awesome bands. Dude watch some Kapa Haka.

At this time, Vanetta was a permanent backing vocalist on recordings and on stage for John. The guy who joined in is Lindsay Field, also a permanent backing vocalist for John. There was also a permanent female backing singer called Lisa Edwards. You can see how well John harmonises with others. A real professional.
Just for the record, the other two singers are two of his three back up singers. She is Venetta Fields and he is Lindsay Field. Both are absolutely brilliant.

I’ve heard John Farnham live three times and he truly is a gift to this world. This performance was one of my favourites and shows off his natural ability to allow others shine. The guy on the piano is David Hirschfelder. After leaving John he went on to compose the scores for Strictly Ballroom, Australia, The Dressmaker and The Water Diviner. Amazing talent.
He also sang You’ll Never Walk Alone. 1996 Carols by Candlelight. 💕🙏

You’ve mentioned gospel a lot, both with John and Jimmy. It’s a nice bit of trivia that Jimmy named his daughter Mahalia, after Mahalia Jackson. And he made the decision to do so if he ever had a daughter after the first time he heard Mahalia Jackson on record…decades before he had his daughter! So the Gospel influence has been there for a long time!
John was a truely giving performer, who also let his 3 backing singers shine throughout his tours veiametta fields & Lindsay fields both shown here as well as the gorgeous lisa Edwards.

I love how John lets Vanessa use her incredible range to dominate the song. You know very well that John could have overblown her voice, but he chooses not to, because Vanessa has such an extraordinary Voice of her own, she is a Phenomenal Australian singer and I’ve seen her in many combinations of Australian musical folk.
It seems Venetta is just as lovely on the inside as she is on the outside, from all that I have watched, read and seen of her. An amazing woman with an amazing talent!!! I am so glad you got to listen to this song, you can't help but feel each and every note they hit. Love your reactions to John Farnham. If he was starting his career now in this day and age with platforms like TH-cam and Spotify, he would be the biggest star in the world. He just never misses a note and hits some ridiculously high notes with power that very few people on the planet could hit.
The good thing for you is you still have so many more amazing performances of John Farnham to get through. We’re no Angels, Touch of Paradise, Loves in Need, and The Reason Why with Richard Marx to name a few.

I am glad you have discovered John Farnham, he is a great singer, entertainer and genuine guy. The best thing watching him sing is you can see his face, he is not swallowing the microphone. His voice is that powerful to be honest he probably doesn't always need one. I don't know if we will ever hear him sing again due to his latest cancer scare. If we don't as long as he is healthy, that's fine - we have decades of songs and memories to pass to generations to come. He also did a concert tour with Olivia Newton John & Anthony Warlow called the main event. He can sing, operatic, blues, jazz, gospel...anything really.
That was amazing. I love your excitement when you find extraordinary new to you rare talents the likes of John Farnham, Tina Arena and Jimmy Barnes. And now we can now add Venetta Fields to this slowly growing list of seldom discovered birds.
