John Farnhams dilemma was what genre! This man can sing anything, do anything. So humble and has NO IDEA how many people adore him. Hilarious, self depreciating, encouraging and without a doubt one of the greatest voices we will ever get to hear. Love his work, love his voice. God love him ✌🏼❤️🇦🇺
That high note was supreme. Most males singing that song have to move into their falsetto to hit those kind of notes.. But not John he hits it in full voice . His range is insane
As a singer I'm so jealous but he is so good so great I have to hear him on the regular. Bless you John that you'll get through this huge challenge in your life with flying colours mate. 🙏
The high note that comes after "i have to know,i have to know my lord" the Why is usually a G5, he is doing a C# here though which is still impressive the emotipn in the whole performance is so great
This is one of only 2 cds i have killed from constant play, this 1992 Australian cast of Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack. It was a bugger to replace, and then we killed that one, too. And this was one of the best songs on it, though the whole cast was such a who's who of the Australian music industry that it was hard to have favourites.
He doesn’t attempt the famous G5 at all, actually. He modifies the melody so as to avoid it. And I for one am very glad he did. People have a weird obsession with high notes, often equating “able to sing high” with “good singer”. You can hear several singers of this song right here on TH-cam, each of whom successfully hits the G5, but sound awful doing it because you can feel the panic rising in them as they near it. They approach it as a gymnastic feat they must pull-off to be considered worthy of the role, a party trick, rather than as an organic extension of the character’s emotional state. Farnham might not be able to hit a G5 (at least not comfortably and reliably enough for him to risk it every night of an extensive tour), but he hits every other note with such effortless grace and superhuman control, it matters not a jot.

Yes Nick John was playing 'Jesus' and this was the scene from the Garden of Gethsemane or as it sometimes is known as the 'Agony in the Garden' when Jesus talks to God knowing he will be killed for all of mankind. But listening to the passion with which our John Farnham sings it, just brings me to tears. The story of Christ, whether truth or myth, together with that incredible composition, AND the magnificence of John's glorious gift, should make everyone proud that we have such beautiful souls walking amongst us.
Yes, this is from Jesus Christ Superstar - Jesus (John) in his conversation with God the night before his crucifixition. KNowing the context, it is amazing to listen again for the lyrics (not to mention the phenominal vocal), as it puts the mythology into a human perspective.
Ian Gillan (an actual hard rock singer not known as a pop singer being the lead singer of Deep Purple) the first Jesus is the the supreme Jesus. Chills upon chills. Truly a performance worthy of ‘the passion’ of Christ. I was lucky enough to see John perform his role in Jesus Christ Superstar, and no stage performance has ever come close to portraying such agony and fear through vocals. However his whole demeanour made you truly believed he was about to be crucified. To me, he will forever be the very best. .
Think about this, he sang this every day for months. Matinee & evenings. And every performance was this brilliant. No special effects, just John & a mike
I was at this last show at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in 1992. I saw John Farnham in Jesus Christ Superstar 3 times. The tour was only going to be a dozen shows it went onto do 80+ shows across Australia & New Zealand. Tickets demand sales in Sydney & Melbourne we so strong they had to come back for more after the initial run. John Farnham is the best rock singer ever to play Jesus in Superstar.
I have never seen this one! So thank you for that. Another outstanding performance from our Farnsey. This song is sung by Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. He is talking to God, he knows he will soon be crucified, and he is scared.
In a perfect world John Farnham would be the biggest Broadway star of all time. He can be as clean and pop-y as he wants, but can also summon the grit to crush a rock song. Much like Freddie Mercury.
I saw this production when I was 17. Cate Ceberano, Jon Stevens and Angry Anderson, were also amazing . One of the best productions ever made! I was lucky to see this live!
Bro, I've loved this guy since I was 4 years Old, I saw this concert at the Adelaide entertainment centre when I was 8 years old, thanks to my parents. He has the most insane, brutal, passionate, incredible voice I have ever heard in my entire life. Nothing will ever sound like it again. This particular song is my favourite of Johns. He has tons of hits, all that I love, but there is nothing more powerful than this, NOTHING, so f****ing powerful! I still bawl my eyes out when I listen to this music, it's my go to place when I want John at his best. But if you haven't listened to it yet, check out "The Temple" when John cuts in, heckin heck mate!
Some how, Johns performance here went largely unnoticed internationally where as John Legend's performance in the US stage production received wide spread critical acclaim. Nothing against John Legend, he's a hell of a singer but when you hear his performance, it's simply not in the same class as Johns. To this day, it still amazes me how on earth he remains largely unknown outside of Oz. I assume that because he chose to stay at home and perform rather than move to the UK or to the USA probably has a lot to do with that. It may sound selfish but thank god he did stay here in Oz, that would have been a bloody tragedy to lose him as well.
Same with Jimmy Barnes, I think they're happy to just have success here but people overseas are missing out on two of the best singers in the world! Oh well, it's special for us I guess.
Yes, I must admit I though the same thing about the John Legend Superstar. Having sat in the front row many times for this Australian production in the round with John Farnham and Jon Stevens as Jesus and Judas respectively, I feel I was difficult to impress. And I'm quite a Superstar purist. Many gifted singers have interpreted "Gesthemene" and the Jesus role, and I don't always compare them favourably to the originals, but I really loved this production and bought many ticket to enjoy it over and over again.
He was put in the too hard basket by USA Record Companies, he could not get a release in America of Whispering Jack the Album because he did not fit their bill, What a farce that was denying the American public one of the best voices that's ever been, because as John Fogerty said The Music Industry is now run by Accountants in the USA and they did not think he was marketable enough. was not given a chance to show his extraudanary voice and Musical ability, what a joke he was just the best and they could not see it because of their greed for profit and money.
You really really need to listen to the 1992 Australian cast of Jesus Christ Superstar on Hey Hey it's Saturday, song is called Everything's Alright. Also a great introduction to the magnificent Kate Cebrano and the very charismatic Jon Stevens (and of course Farnsie) - you will not be disappointed x
I reckon ThatSinger will love that if he listens to it. He'll fall in love with Jon Stevens as soon as he opens his mouth. The note John Farnham hits and sustains in that song is to die for. Ha Ha ... let's see if we can tempt ThatSinger to listen to this in his own time ... th-cam.com/video/O-itN1psaMc/w-d-xo.html
Yep I agree… watch the link Sandra has shared. I remember having this album because I was too young to travel to see the stage show. I remember watching that performance on Hey Hey It’s Saturday too.
I was lucky enough to be a lighting guy in this production for over 6 months and got to enjoy it every night. It’s worth getting the whole album or what ever you call it these days as it’s one of the best Australian cast recordings you will ever hear. You need to look up Jon stevens and Kate Ceberano as well as they played Judas and Mary. Do your self a favour and listen to the whole show.
Absolutely spot on. The emotion, still gives the chills listening to him sing it as do all the cast from this 90s version, Jon Stevens is worth a listen to, well, they all are 😅👏👏, wave that thang around Nick till your arm falls off 🤗
Can you imagine when this man discovers Kate Cebrano and Jon Stevens 🤣🤣🤣🤣 And it has been mentioned but not everyone can afford patreon or paypal requests.
Here is another guy I'd never heard of until TSR and videos like this just makes me appreciate you that much more because not many people even thinking about Jesus and anything to do with reality. Thank you Bro !
Wow, this absolutely gave me chills. This was a phenomenal performance, and that’s really saying something when we’re talking about John Farnham. Although I’ve seen John live on a couple of occasions, one of my biggest regrets is that I never got to see him in Jesus Christ Superstar. Thanks for reacting to this one, this was a joy to watch 😊
I didn't get to see it live either, I couldn't afford it at the time. When John's 'Then Again' album was coming out I rang up for a radio competition to win the new CD (my 1st ever CD), & John was secretly in the radio studio at the time recording an interview to be played that following week. I got to speak to John for about 30 seconds (not on air) & he asked me if I'd seen Superstar & I had to say no. It's a regret I'll carry forever.
I loooooooove your reactions! I find myself nodding and answering you when you asked about if John was in the role of Jesus 😀 I saw this live, I cried it was so inspirational. It had all the greats, especially John of course, plus others such as Kate Cebrano, and ( another you might like) John Stevens ( originally from New Zealand ). You are spot on about it being Johns best performance 👍🏼 plus, we get to see his emotions/acting ability through the songs. Keep up the good work. Love from Australia 🇦🇺
I have always adored this performance, and recommend it to everyone. More recently I saw the version with Ben Forster (with Tim Minchin as Judas and Melanie C as Mary), and comparing that rendition of Gethsemane to this one.... THIS is Rage Against the Heavens, his last moment of defiance.... the newer version was more "Daddy won't buy me an Xbox".
Oh how I love Farnsey and Barnsey. John Farnham I soooo miss your amazing once in a life time voice. JF you are the voice and I for one will miss your amazing and unique talent, you make me proud to be Australian xxxxxxx
I saw thus performance in Brisbane Australia and oh man, it was by far the best theatre production ever. Check out Jon Stevens in the same production. His voice is amazing too!
John could have done opera, hard rock, Broadway, anything! His voice sends shivers down my spine, even after all the decades he's been performing. Aussies are so proud that he's ours 🇦🇺 The other amazing thing is that he was a smoker for years, but it doesn't seem to have affected his voice at all.
He is out of this world. John I wish you the speediest recovery. This world is a better place because of you and your phenomenal talent and generosity of spirit ❤
My favourite thing about this is that JCS (and Gethesamane included) is one of those things that skirts the line between edgy and kitch/cheesey depending on the performance (just google the "note" from 'Gethsemane' sung by different performers on TH-cam). John actually doesn't sing as high as some of those singers, but he chooses a register that he will smash, and absolutely nails it. I believe every second of this performance, he absolutely sells it and actually gives it pathos and menace, instead of a kind of quaint rock opera cheese. Irony is that in most of his own solo shows, he spends a lot of time mugging it up to the audience, cracking jokes and being a goof. Here he shows his absolute class as a performer in a serious dramatic role.
My favorite will allways be, when the war is over from 2003 .the show is called the last time. His vocal range is from another planet. But its hard to say whats the best his done. He can sing anything and make it heavenly.
John’s Jesus Christ raging against the will of God and asking why is one of the most heart-wrenching performances. The man was a master of everything he wanted to tackle before he retired. He has been my fave since I was around 8. Thanks for loving him too, Nick!
The versatility in his vocal range still amazes me and no matter what genre he kicks it butt and seeing Jesus Christ Superstar was the most amazing experience with our other legend Aussie singers!! 🙏❤️🇦🇺
by far the best version of this production. i had the CD in my car for a good 18 months. the whole cast are magnificent ..ps love your reactions to aussie music we have taken for granted for so long..such talent downunder
John played JESUS in the musical and yes it is the scene when he enters the Garden of Gethsemane . If I write it phonetically you pronounce it geth..sem..mon ..e all one word I hope this helped I am an Aussie and have Loved this man's singing all my life . Very proud of every performance and that you are all discovering what we have had the privilege to know in his very long career without ever a note wrong . John is in the battle of his life at the moment ,sending LOVE and Prayers to him and his beautiful family.
Hey man, I love your reviews of John Farnham and how excited you get. I was lucky enough to see this production the whole cast was amazing. Hearing this song live by John was mind blowing on a whole new level. A CD through a super high quality stereo doesn't even get close to how it sounded live. Keep up the reviews...love your work mate. 👍
Saw him perform this in Perth with my beautiful Mum. Honestly, John as Jesus, Jon Stevens (Noiseworks, have a listen) as Judas & Kate Ceberano as Mary Magdalene I didn’t know where to look, pure class all of them
I love watching you watching John I really hope somehow that this gets passed on to John he wood be so humbled in your words of praise There has never been anyone like John ever in any country
You got it in the end 😊- I was so lucky to see two different Australian casts doing this. I loved it in 1975 but the 1992 production blew my mind. John was magnificent.
Thank you so much for reacting to this! I also requested this on Patreon ❤️ It is such a powerful vocal performance. So much emotion! You’re right, this is John playing Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, singing this song to God before the crucifixion.
Love the love for John! This isn't even his best performance of the song as it was the final night and he was tired from months of touring. The original album performance is brilliant, you have to listen. I guess it's the definitive performance. John could have easily been a heavy metal singer or opera tenor!
I've now watched your reaction video 3 times & John's performance still gives me the shivers. Growing up with his music, I thought I knew what he could do with his voice - but this is a whole other level. Crazy, crazy good 🙌🙌🙌 It's going to be a sad day when he eventually passes away.
I've started watching your John Farnham reactions about a year after you recorded them, and I was really hoping someone had recommended this to you! It makes my heart race and gives me chills every time I hear it. If anyone can make you feel empathy for Jesus Christ as a human being, it's John Farnham. It helps that the song is well written too. But this isn't even his best performance of it. His voice was no doubt a bit tired on the final night, as it's both a physically and emotionally demanding role. The version they recorded for the album (which was recorded live, just like this one) was even better, and he hit even higher notes flawlessly (of course).
Yessss! Clicked so fast on this one! A few of us told you this would blow you away! This whole cast if full of amazing Aussie (and a Kiwi I believe?) musical legends. Kate Cebarno, John Waters and Jon Stevens are others in this production well worth checking out! I've seen people ask, why do Aussies call him "The Voice"? Simply put....John is. Great reaction! :)
Yes !! Thank you so much Nick... this one is a pearler... (Geth-sem-anee) BTW I have requested it a few times..but I'm not on your patreon unfortunately... I'm just glad you've seen it now !! Farnsey in my opinion was THE best JC ... especially live...
Sitting here smiling, saying yes, yes, yes to all your questions, Nick. This is from Jesus Christ superstar. John is playing Jesus. The song, Gethemane (pronounced Geth-se-man-ee) occurs right before the crowd comes after him to crucify him. This is just after the Passover when the disciples have ‘fallen asleep’ (or as the musical depicts them- passed out from drinking too much) and Jesus goes to the garden of gethsemane to pray to his father…. This is his ‘conversation’ with God, questioning why he is the chosen one. The man sitting on the steps for the whole song I think is Jon stevens, who plays Judas and he is about to go and betray him. Anyway this is an incredible version of this and probably the best in the world- certainly the best I have heard, and I’m a musical performer and singer myself… I just wished I’d had the privilege of singing with John Farnham except in a few mass choir performances as a teenager (check out the Sydney olympics opening ceremony, I’m in the choir there 😁)
John's rocker voice - oh hell yes - get yourself on to his cover of Black Dog (the Zeppelin song) - there's 2 audio versions here on youtube (it was recorded at a sound check apparently and it's now on the Rarities album in his "Anthology" collection). It's bloody brilliant!!!
I was lucky enough to see this live as a child in Sydney and it was truly spectacular. We had the CD and listened to it often. You need to check out some of the other songs from this production - amazing performers doing amazing performances.
I'm gonna go through some of JF's stuff, because of your channel. This makes me think of how Darrel Hall, got blackballed by Motown, and had to go pop.
I saw him perform this in Melbourne and when he'd finished, the audience went so quite, you could hear a pin drop. He was quite the dramatic performer but was known for Rock & Pop. He could sing literally any style; and did!
Your reaction was amazing. John Farnham is beyond incredible. I agree with you this song and when something is wrong with my baby are 2 of his absolute finest. 💕💕💕
I wish I'd found you earlier because I've been bingeing your Farnsy reactions and wanted to recommend this one to you - so glad someone put you on to it. If you want to hear more of his "rock" type voice, I'd suggest Playing To Win. It's a song he wrote when he did a brief stint as the singer of The Little River Band and it's one of my all-time favourites. It's also quite different to most of his other popular works and shows more of his versatility.
I’m nearly 2 years late in coming to this, and at this stage it’s unlikely that John will ever sing again, at least not in public. I was lucky enough to see this live in Melbourne and I have the cast recording. To this day, this song moves me to tears every time I hear it. John’s ability to express the utter rage against, then the quiet acceptance of, his (Jesus’) future is simply outstanding. To think he didn’t want to do this role as he felt he was too old to play Jesus. Just glad he changed his mind. 💖🇦🇺
The studio version of this is absolutely incredible. Well worth tracking down and listening too in its entirety. John did an amazing job. Also his cast mate Jon stevens (another fantastic singer) gives one of the best versions of Judas around. Great power and grit.
You are spot on in that John Farnham was playing the part of Jesus and was talking to God at the end. I had tickets to go see this but never got there and I will never forgive myself for missing this show!

❤Just BRILLIANT ❤❤❤❤❤
Perfect vocals and acting. Love our John and your reaction Nick and your little waving cloth too ❤🎉😮
Some how, Johns performance here went largely unnoticed internationally where as John Legend's performance in the US stage production received wide spread critical acclaim.
So glad he’s in Australia 😁
Just imagine it. This level of performance night after night! It was magic then and it still is. He truly is "The Voice"!
Yes he definitely is. 🇦🇺😁🦘🐨👍🏼
Gotta watch the clip that includes them singing amazing grace at the end 😁😁😁
Yep I agree… watch the link Sandra has shared. I remember having this album because I was too young to travel to see the stage show. I remember watching that performance on Hey Hey It’s Saturday too.
Yes! I’ve been asking for this for awhile.
Amy Stapleton, yes I agree absolutely beautiful 💕
I was lucky enough to be a lighting guy in this production for over 6 months and got to enjoy it every night. It’s worth getting the whole album or what ever you call it these days as it’s one of the best Australian cast recordings you will ever hear. You need to look up Jon stevens and Kate Ceberano as well as they played Judas and Mary.
Do your self a favour and listen to the whole show.
The Australian album is bloody fantastic!!! And props to Jon Stevens as well.
Preach John
I saw this live, in 1992. I can remember his voice crushing through me.
Absolutely spot on. The emotion, still gives the chills listening to him sing it as do all the cast from this 90s version, Jon Stevens is worth a listen to, well, they all are 😅👏👏, wave that thang around Nick till your arm falls off 🤗
Kate Cebrano did a great job as MM too...and the band... both playing and being the chorus... it was awesome...
@@JoSedunary 👌
Please listen to the whole album , you will get vocals like this all the way through, Jon stevens as Judas is great as well.
Can you imagine when this man discovers Kate Cebrano and Jon Stevens 🤣🤣🤣🤣
And it has been mentioned but not everyone can afford patreon or paypal requests.
Here is another guy I'd never heard of until TSR and videos like this just makes me appreciate you that much more because not many people even thinking about Jesus and anything to do with reality. Thank you Bro !
Just a breathtaking performance 👏 👏 👏
@@dolfyn73 Wow, what an amazing experience that would have been 😊
It's so wonderful to see him being discovered by new audiences. He's always been amazing.
I loooooooove your reactions! I find myself nodding and answering you when you asked about if John was in the role of Jesus 😀
I saw this live, I cried it was so inspirational.
🤣😂
Spot on
Beautiful reaction. Thanks. Insane performance.
I saw this show 10 times, every time it was spellbinding. John Farnham one of the greatest singers ever and the nicest most humble man
I remember seeing John play Jesus in Jesus Christ Super Star and still have the program guide book. Johns performance had me in tears. Just amazing 🌟
Me too Cathy….it was just so good.
"John Farnham aint never have a lacklsuter vocal".... truer words have never been spoken, brother. Definitely the GOAT.
I saw this at the Sydney Entertainment Centre way back when, with a host of huge Aussie talent ... The Voice impeccable as always!
Exhilarating! Brilliant! Versatility galore from this man. Outstanding performance and brilliant reaction 👏
Honestly, John as Jesus, Jon Stevens (Noiseworks, have a listen) as Judas & Kate Ceberano as Mary Magdalene I didn’t know where to look, pure class all of them
I had the privilege of see this production live in 92 absolute magic
I had forgotten about this performance. He truely is amazing.
So good to hear you say that Johnny is one of the greatest singers in history-yes he is! Wishing JF to get well real soon, we miss & love you ❤
I love watching you watching John I really hope somehow that this gets passed on to John he wood be so humbled in your words of praise
There has never been anyone like John ever in any country
You got it in the end 😊- I was so lucky to see two different Australian casts doing this. I loved it in 1975 but the 1992 production blew my mind. John was magnificent.
You're reaction and enjoyment just fantastic to see 💯❤️🇦🇺
Learned about him only a few months ago. Knew about superstar since it came out. Didn't know he did this. Amazing. Thanks
Thank you so much for reacting to this! I also requested this on Patreon ❤️ It is such a powerful vocal performance. So much emotion! You’re right, this is John playing Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, singing this song to God before the crucifixion.
Your reactions give me goosebumps? Coz I know about JC superstar show. Thank you. 🌺 I cannot say anymore. I'm lost for words...
I'm so glad I was able to see this version live in 1992. Amazing cast. Fantastic performances ❤️
Love the love for John! This isn't even his best performance of the song as it was the final night and he was tired from months of touring. The original album performance is brilliant, you have to listen. I guess it's the definitive performance. John could have easily been a heavy metal singer or opera tenor!
This was THE best "concert" I have ever been to, Perth 1992. So amazing. Between John Farnham and Jon Stevens...whooo.
I saw this in Melbourne- Russell Morris as Simon was also incredible, and he was the vocal coach for the show
I've now watched your reaction video 3 times & John's performance still gives me the shivers.
I was lucky enough to see this, brining back memories.
Seeing it live was an amazing experience. You felt Jesus' pain; John showed it perfectly.
Love your reaction and I love this performance by John. I have not seen this before, it is stunning thankyou
Mind blown first time I heard him sing this!
I have sent the black dog request already lol
@@danschiavello oooh excellent!
Love this!
Yes I agree this version just blew me away, what can’t he sing?!! I would like to see him react to this song too 💞
I was lucky enough to see this live as a child in Sydney and it was truly spectacular. We had the CD and listened to it often. You need to check out some of the other songs from this production - amazing performers doing amazing performances.
Chills, love this soundtrack. They made magic
Wow. That’s was phenomenal! What a singer….
I just love watching your reactions!!! You are only now discovering what millions of us fans have always known!!! He is THE voice!!!!!
I saw this as a kid, my parents brought me along and it was flipping amazing. Phenomenal performance by John.
Yesss! He was a rock God in this production! One of the best experiences of my life and yes Jon Stevens! Holy cow!
And seeing this live wax amazing.
That was incredible, he completely transformed into the character and made me believe every word he was saying. Amazing
Love Jesus Christ Superstar and I love John even more. This was brilliant.
The studio version of this is absolutely incredible. Well worth tracking down and listening too in its entirety. John did an amazing job. Also his cast mate Jon stevens (another fantastic singer) gives one of the best versions of Judas around. Great power and grit.
Out of this world
You are spot on in that John Farnham was playing the part of Jesus and was talking to God at the end.
I had tickets to go see this but never got there and I will never forgive myself for missing this show!
No words!!!!!!! I'm crying
