    This video looks at this great subscription-free photography workflow that lets you import RAW+JPG files from your camera into the Apple iCloud Photo Library.
    The beauty of this approach is that you can optionally use your camera film simulation or picture profiles most of the time using the JPGs, but optionally jump in and switch to the RAW version when you want to. iCloud Photo Library syncs both versions of your image seamlessly to your devices.
    I look at the interesting way Fujifilm X-Trans sensors work compared to normal sensors too and reveal the amazing power that RAW Power offers when working with your RAW files on your iPad.
    It turns out iCould Photo Library has really great support for RAW+JPG files, naturally using the JPG as the default image and then allowing access to the RAW version on demand on any of your devices.
    The software in the workflow is the amazing app called RAW Power by Gentlemen Coders:
    gentlemencoders.com
    This app leverages the Apple RAW processing engine and makes it available to images in your iCloud Photo Library on your iPad and your Mac. It doesn’t use a subscription model which makes it a great alternative to Lightroom if, like me, you want a RAW workflow for family videos rather than professional use.

    Great clear explanation- as an iPad and Fuji user I love this. Quick question: do you have a backup strategy (eg keeping a copy of your photos elsewhere?) and also I’ve a lot of Fuji RAW files I’ve stored compressed, and had issues reading/previewing on iPad - do you use uncompressed?

    This is a great informative video. I’ve been struggling with a proper workflow for my XT4 so may give this a go. I’m a little concerned about storage space. Say you have a RAW+JPG and then create a new JPG to sit over the top. You effectively have 3 files. Once you’re happy that the final JPG is complete, is there a way to remove the original two files? I guess you would create a copy of the JPG that sits over the top and delete the first ‘bundle’?

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comments! Yeah you could certainly export the jpg then remove the original. Given how affordable iCloud storage is though I’d just leave them in there in case you want to tweak in the future.

    Thank you for this ! I have been struggling to understand what is going on when I load Canon raw+jpeg into my camera roll. The Canon camera connect software wirelessly connects the camera and the ipad, but it only allows you to either grab the jpegs OR the raw .cr3 files, so you have to do two operations to get all the files. Unfortunately, this results in the camera roll showing two images for each photo, the jpeg and the raw file ! On the other hand, I tried your method of importing them into the camera roll from the sdcard, and it stacked the raw+jpeg as you show. I guess Canon does not understand how IOS wants to handle photos, which is a little sad ! I shall be importing photos directly from the Sdcard from now now on... Thanks again !

    I've recently encountered a strange bug in the default photos app; when you're viewing your photos there is a very noticable color shift towards green if you pinch to zoom in. Could you try this out with your JPEGS? Just pick a photo then slowly pinch to zoom to notice the effect, it's most obvious on Acros (black and white) photos. This even happens with the photos taken with ipad/iphone.
    Also I find the colors having too much red (before zooming) and too much green (after zoom) saturation compared to my calibrated display.
    Would love to hear your feedback on this. (I use the 10.5 iPad Pro btw)

    Hi Ben, apologies for the off topic, newbie question, but could you recommend a camera app that I can use on my iPhone in place of the stock camera app, one that shoots RAW, that you’ve used and liked. Currently swimming in a sea of confusion. Thanks. P.S. Didn’t know Raw Power had all these extra chops.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My personal thoughts on this after some experimenting are that the native abilty of the built in app is so good that you will probably not get anything more out of the RAW images off the iPhone sensor than those excellent jpgs. For me the fun of raw comes from taking the insane quality images off a mirrorless camera and then you really get to play! But one of the strongest features of the built in camera app is its software processing power so I would embrace that and save RAW for something with a bigger sensor.

  • @noell6496

    Well done explanation ... I'm not a Fuji X user yet principally because Apple doesn't support the compressed raw format only the uncompressed. I been a Raw Power user for a while as well as Darkroom. I agree with your preference for how iCloud photos works and I'd rather pay for a small storage subscription than the SW subscription. I wish Fuji would release a version of their Fuji X Raw Studio for the iPad adding even more to the value proposition. How do you find the size / storage issues to manage both on the camera's SD card and of course with your iCloud subscription?

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a big iCloud plan and 512GB iPad so I'm ok with storage - the beauty of iCloud photo library is the option to not keep originals on the device though - as long as you have a backup somewhere else this works really well! iCloud photo library with this really good raw support is really an excellent solution.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't worry too much about the compressed raw files. iCloud storage is so cheap I don't think it's a massive issue. Do note that if you get the recent Fujis that the Apple Raw support doesn't include them yet (and thus Raw Power can't open them either). I just upgraded to the XT4 and now I'm stuck waiting for support!!

    My question stems from an photo editor's point of view: May one *benefit* from Apple's Mini-LED display for the M1 iPad Pro 12.9' during post-processing (in Photoshop Lightroom)? Or will one only get to witness the "glory" brightness of 1000 nits and beyond *only* when *viewing* HDR content? I've been told that Apple's new XDR projects at around 500/ 600 nits during normal usage. Do you notice any micro-contrast detail improvements when editing on the 12.9' mini-LED vs the normal 11'? Please advise, and thank you in advance.

    I have been thinking about - what if I want to move away from iCloud raw + jpeg editing in the future ? The only way that I can see of getting raw files off iCloud is to download them to the device (ipad in my case) with optimized storage disabled, and then hooking it up to a PC and grabbing them from DCIM. This assumes that sometime in the future, I have enough storage space on my iPad to handle this download ! Do you know of any other way to get the raw files off iCloud ? (downloads result in just the jpegs) ...

      Bump. This is the major flaw with this workflow. It’s kinda infuriating that I can’t just access iCloud from any browser and download all my original raw files. I am currently running a ridiculous workaround. I import photos to iPad via SD card, cull and delete unwanted ones on the iPad, then I save the keepers to an album. On my PC, I download the album from iCloud, which of course gives me only JPEG‘s. Then I also import all of the original files from the SD card to a separate folder on my PC. Finally, I run a script that compares the file names in the iCloud folder to file names in the separate folder which contains all of the photos, and the script deletes any photos which are not also present in the iCloud folder.

      @@jeremytheoneofdestiny8691 I mostly gave up on this by purchasing a Macbook Air. It has a real file system, which works as you would expect, and does not hide files. I don't use iCloud because of the issues discussed already with raw + jpeg. Instead, I use Google Drive, which saves the files as you would expect. I have on occasion, edited raw files on the iPad, but I do this by opening them from Google Drive. Much easier ! I have been a windows user for many, many years - I messed with Macs in the 80s before they started using Unix as the OS base, but still stayed with Windows. The Macbook has been a wonderful experience - so much easier to understand, OS updates take minutes instead of hours, the battery lasts for 12 hours .... I could go on and on and bore everybody to death - suffice it to say that editing on the Macbook is a hassle-free experience, and is thoroughly recommended by me !!

    Please excuse if this is a daft question but I am confused with how my photos are uploading. I’m uploading currently via usb from Fuji to iPad Pro and it’s showing images under the Fuji heading with a label on them as jpeg and raw, it’s also opened them all under the heading raw (they look the same) and also opened under the heading “unable to upload” but they are able to be opened on the iPad?! 1. Does this mean that the raw is hidden and I can’t open it on the iPad without additional software or the app you mentioned (I don’t use a Mac) 2. Does it mean the images it’s uploaded under the title raw are or are not raw, 3. Are they taking up space on the iPad 3x over. And 4. Do I have to be using the cloud as I have turned off iCloud photos back up because I don’t pay for storage! Also of note, if I delete the photos under the unable to upload title all others go too in all headings. Apologies for the multiple questions but I have searched and searched and can’t find an answer. This video is the closest to giving me an answer. Any help is massively appreciated. Thanks.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the ‘unable to upload’ section is probably there just because you don’t have iCloud Photo Library enabled. So the photos are on the iPad but not in iCloud. When you edit the photos it will base the edits on the raw version. You will always be able to click the revert option to switch back to the JPEG that the camera created as well. You are storing the RAW and JPG with each image, yes. If you enabled iCloud it would offload the RAW version to the cloud and ave space on your iPad, only downloaded when needed.

    Really great video. I really wanted to use the iPad photos app to import and store all my canon m50 photos which I shot in jpeg+ raw, without involving my (old) Mac or using iCloud. It’s not obvious when importing from the sd card directly into photos that both the raw and jpeg are imported bound together, and you can only see the raw files are there when you attempt to edit and the raw logo briefly flashes at the top of the screen. There is also no way to manually switch between raw and the jpeg display in the photos library like there is on the Mac version, and no way to view the file system for all your stored photos on the files app to see the different versions of the image that are stored. There’s is also no way for example to delete the raw file but keep the jpeg should u wish to save space etc. It’s a shame these basic features aren’t there as you don’t feel you have full control over what the app is doing with your images. The photos app is so nicely designed for viewing the images and enjoyable to use, if only they would allow slightly more manual control of your files. Perhaps in iOS 14...

Apple iCloud 2TB storage is $10 a month.

    The things that are holding me back are:
    - Editing apps look fine but I don’t know which ones support applying Film Simulations to the RAW, similar to how Lightroom does.
    - Culling RAW+JPEG using the Files app seems really fiddly. I wish there was an app that lets you do culling off the SD card

      Mobile LR does allow sims on the iPad.

    I can’t upload my Fuji x100f raw files onto my iPad Pro period.

      Seems odd - are you using the compressed fuji raw mode by any chance?

      Compressed or uncompressed in Raw it just does not recognise the file !

      Automatically uploads to camera role, jpegs are no problem it’s just says no image when raw.
