    This video shows exactly why it always bothers me when Clemens shut down people's attempts at finding new stuff in the game when they're new, because "anything you can think we already thought many years ago" as he puts it. As someone who has been part of a speedrunning community for 13 years and already found a few hundred new things in the game, and also being a TASer, I always try to stay humble because I've seen people come out of nowhere with a new discovery way too many times, even though their experience with the game was very low at the time.
    Bottom line is, don't think you're above anyone else just because you got more experience and skill at anything, good new ideas can come from anywhere and no one is omniscient so there's always things to be found that no one thought about yet.

      It's rather narcissistic for someone to shutdown other people's attempts at finding new stuff to speedrun a level in GoldenEye, because you aren't the founder of glitch hunting, nor is it off limits. If people want to try new tech at glitches they can, and nobody can have a say in that.

  • @bipolarminddroppings

    I had one of these myself, though not in a speedrunning context.
    I spent about 2 years playing Mario Sunshine on the GC and found several of the big glitches and then showed them to my friends.
    10 years later I picked up a GC from a pawn shop and played Mario Sunshine again. After several months of playing it again, one of my friends came over and we played it together.
    We started a new save and he used one of the glitches I had shown him a decade earlier that I had completely forgotten about. When I said something like "nice skip. I will have to remember that" he looked at me and said "you showed me it 10 years ago" and laughed.

    9 KF7 shots is sufficient for the decoder door lure. 18 just creates more lag and alerts more guards. I made a forum post about this a while back. There is a specific table in that lab that works as the maximum distance required to alert him with the 9 so it's not even necessary to run to the far wall.

    this reminds me of when sexyzora19 found a trick in the months after LoZ: Twilight Princess' release. It was a clip that let you get into the room with the cannon that shoots you to the City in the Sky. Seemed to get glossed over and forgotten as people were discovering huge stuff basically every day (also I think they deleted their youtube channel which didn't help). Way later on, someone (Paraxade?) remembered the trick and used it to skip 2 dungeons iirc. Like an hour of time saved by a trick that was known basically since the beginning, but never implemented into the route

    • @alecday3775
      @alecday3775 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it was such an obvious time save, why wasn't added into the route? I mean depending on the category, we could see SUB-HOUR runs. I know for a fact that it wouldnt be possible in the 100% category as you would be skipping potentially A CRAP TON of required items for 100% the game.

      I had made some discoveries in contra hard corps years ago. Did runs and submitted times. The speedrun mods accused me of cheating or using hacked roms(it was literally the gensis model 2 and cart). Subsequently I was banned from that sr community. However guess what that mod did? Why he used the tech that I discovered and copied my route and got the world record. My time was still 5 seconds faster but hey I was banned from the community anyways. So thats why runners wont try to make their own routes or try new tech out. From what I understand, after mamy years, that mod was banned himself for shadey practices and hostility towards new runners. But I guess I am still banned. I dont know and moved onto other games to speedrun anyway.

    Simpsons hit and run, wasp cameras have a very specific animation cycle, and you can only kill them with a car hit at a certain few frames, so you just have to go for it and pray... until they rather recently discovered they are all globally timed, and, from the moment you load your save, this timer doesn't change by anything, pausing, loading, whatever, so they were able to create a gif you can sync up to the game load and always know when to hit each wasp. No one had ever considered the wasps could be on a global timer before this.

    might as well comment about something similar to these. In MKDS, at the end of Mario Circuit, theres a couple of purple blocks, and near those blocks is a tiny slope in the grass. You can use this slope to hop over those blocks and save ~1 sec per lap. This is one of the simplest shortcuts in the game and can be done by anyone in like 5 minutes, yet it took nearly 9 years to be found (game came out on November 14 2005, and this was discovered on April 10 2014)

  • @pork3d
    @pork3d 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    A lot of players don't exactly play the game when speedrunning, they are just trying to complete a specific set of moves they memorized as fast as possible. Most of the time when a new time save is found the people who found it are not the ones who can utilize it for a record. Most time spent speedrunning is done resetting until you get a good run with few mistakes.

    • @Omicron9999
      @Omicron9999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's usually what it takes to discover new strats. Veteran runners rarely innovate new strats themselves because they all become metaslaves and don't even consider radical new approaches to saving time. They just run the same routes over and over and over again until the run is so optimised that the most anyone can do is go a few hundredths of a second faster. Usually it takes somebody completely new to the scene to discover radical timesaves on their own and then the community never takes them seriously unless hard video evidence is provided or until somebody more notable uses it and goes "uhh, so that new strat that weird new guy said would save like 5 seconds and we all laughed at? Turns out he was right."
      Lookdown in Goldeneye being the best example of that happening off the top of my head.

    Remembering or rediscovering old strategies is definitely about as important as finding completely new ones these days. Usually in a 20 year old, optimized speed game, there will run out of tons of new strategies to find. However, just to uncover things others have thought of or tried, combined with new knowledge, leads to solid timesaves and a greater understanding of the game.

    The current Super Metroid any% WR route was primarily developed from a long-obsoleted TAS deemed unviable for RTA runs at the time of its release. By the time the RTA run was unveiled, most of the community had no knowledge of the existence of the obsoleted TAS or its potential to be adapted to RTA strats, simply because the top runners were so entrenched in the existing RTA route, so certain that the execution required for the old TAS route was too difficult to be consistently performed by humans, that most had not bothered to question whether it was truly the route with the most potential for optimization.

    Marble Zone Act 3's IL in Sonic 1. 0:27 was a maxed IL even with the faster TAS boss, as you had to wait for a very slow platform cycle before performing a "zip" left. Only last year, after about 8 years, was a zip right used, allowing you to fall under the slow platform and zip left underneath it. Lowered the IL to 0:26 with the possibility of a 0:25 with a perfect level and TAS boss.

    In Dam00 I think 1 second could be saved from the time if runners can chunk the covert modem from a distance instead of butting up against the box. Like Wouter Jansen’s Dam00 2:05 run from back in 2001. Everyone has since adopted for consistency and they butt up against the box instead, even Wouters later runs he chose to abandon the distant modem throw.
    It’s difficult to pull off consistently but I do believe you can save time, thoughts?

    In the early days of Fallout 4, runners would have to take the first mission from Garvey to help out settlers. So you had to go the settlement, then clear out the raider hideout, back to the settlement, then back to Garvey. Until someone realized you could just kill the settler NPC you're supposed to talk to. You fail the quest but it allows you to progress just the same. Saved about 2 minutes.

Similarly I also remember a few of my playthroughs of Aztec having the glass door open and unlocked on the few completes I did have on that level. What it feels like to me is that there might be benefit from looking at suboptimal/normal plays through the goldeneye levels for skips and other janky wierdness that can be exploited and refined to new techniques and reroutes much like looking through historical speedruns can bring light to old strats that can be reapplied to modern routes. I also remember a lot of the janky stuff happened when I was trying to unlock the cheats and obviously trying to beat the set times.

    On GEXBLA, using the default dpad to move produces less speed than using the left stick. It seems to be a totally different mechanic. The game usually checks how many frames Bond has been moving forward before applying the max speed bonus. We only just connected those dots and realized that using left stick forward and dpad forward simultaneously double-counts these frames and therefore halves the amount of time needed to reach max speed, saving 0.17s every time speed must be gained. We use remapping to make this automatic so there's no need to tape down the dpad.

    That joke about "you can press R during this section to save 20 seconds" is not far off from a time save discovered in the ScummVM DOS version of Maniac Mansion. Turns out you can advance through the unskippable cutscene at the end just by pressing the period key. This was only discovered two years ago.

    You have cute obsession with the field you are in, like a kid with dinosaurs, it makes your videos more special and warmer and not as academic and hard. Being juvenile will get anyone in trouble and it is something you have to keep checks on oneself as an adult and isn't an excuse for anything but it is something others treasure in those who have it. 👍

    I had to rewatch frigate in disbelief. Unloading and the implications on pathing is far from a foreign concept to anyone speedrunning the level. Of course a reverse route is roughly equal distance in any situation. Not only can't I believe this strategy wasn't thought of sooner, I can't even believe I didn't think of it myself in casual curiosity. 🤯

    The same thing happened in one of the games I run, Runaway Rainbow (GBA). For context, in the first three chapters, you need to collect a certain item to progress through the game. For the longest time, we manually pick it up by approaching the item itself.
    lmagine our surprise when I discovered through submission notes for a TAS of the game, that you can actually press A far away from the item and still pick it up. The weird thing? We already have that strats for the NPCs.
    I don't want to explain it in detail, you can watch my Any% WR run here (th-cam.com/video/bljW3KdBG_M/w-d-xo.html) and head to 1:39 of that run to see and know the strats I'm alluded to.
    Nevertheless, you can imagine the bruh moment between me and Alec, another runner of the game when we found out about it.

      Pretty sure if Karl brought it up it's slightly relevant to the conversation.
      I'm not talking about the stuff Goose did, I'm asking why he and Karl aren't on good terms if in fact that is the case.
      If I'm asking questions then I'm not taking it as fact am I?

    You can almost see the break in the human thought process with these things..guard randomly gets stuck, they find a way to consitantly get him stuck, thats a good result..overwriting the thought that, he does infact get stuck by himself sometimes. Its like the new information overwrites the old and makes you, not forget it, but disregard it before you spend energy processing it again. its like the brain decides that information has been dealt with..compartmentalize it and dont think of it again.

    I would argue that consistency shouldn't be so important in speedrunning. Speed should be the most important thing and consistency be damned. Reset/restart as often as you need and always go for all the fastest tricks.
