  • In this reaction video, I'm watching my first time hearing DISTURBED perform "The Sound of Silence" live from Conan. I have to say, I'm really impressed!
The song is really emotive and I love the way the band plays it. I have to say, I'm really looking forward to hearing more from them in the future!

So many say Simon's version was the warning but David's was the rage when no one listened. I connect that in today's world of social media and so many lonely sitting behind keyboards.
The other is I heard that he doesn't have tattoos out of respect to his grandfather and generations of Jewish Cantors. He removes his piercings when seeing his family.
He is a master vocalist and a humble human being as well as his bandmates.

I'm not sure if you've listened to any other disturbed music, but David's voice has always been legendary. From the first time we heard "oh wa ah ah ah...ah ah" to "and the people bowed and prayed" his voice is unmistakable

The lead vocalist truly sells the message of the song in this performance. He was vocally trained as a hazzan (a Jewish musician who leads the congregation in songful prayer. In Christianity, this prayer leader is often called a cantor.) Add in his own rebelliousness and musical preference, and the result is one of the best (metal) vocalists of all time. An amazing artist.
For your own fun, you might want to hear the Pentatonix version. As an acapella group, the instrumentation is simply vocals/beat boxing. Interesting result.
So glad you did all 3 for us. FYI the 1964 audio is on Simon and Garfunkel's YT channel, which is a bit different than what you've heard.

David Draiman is a very well trained singer. As a Cantor in the synagogue growing up and now he works with world renowned vocal coaches. He has mastered vocal control and breathing, just phenomenal. The whole band are such a cool bunch of guys and dedicated musicians. Your reaction was all of us the first time seeing this performance. I still get chills.

It wasn't about the internet, per se, but about the general disconnect that people have now. The Simon and Garfunkel version was the warning about this happening, trying to give people a chance to fix this. But with television, media, and now, the internet, people move more and more away from each other, losing those personal connections. Disturbed's version is anger that the warning was not heeded.

This song was written as a warning to the new world where flash and lack of substance was scarring Paul Simon. He and Art kept their singing melodious throughout the original. If you weren't really paying attention to the words, you would have thought that it was just a nice duet. David actually brought the feeling that this song deserved. Paul saw it live on Conan and not only posted links through his social media accounts, he also sent David Draiman an email telling him that it was the first time that he had seen it live and that it was very powerful and a wonderful rendition of his song.

Before you completely write off Simon and Garfunkle, you really need to hear them (mostly Garfunkle) do Bridge Over Troubled Water. Paul Simon has a softer voice but Garfunkle can belt out songs with the best of them. "The Boxer" is a masterpiece.

The song was written in 1964, so there was no internet. There were lots of actual neon signs though. All glaring in the darkness vying for attention and blinding people to the world around them. I've heard people comment that the original song was a warning, but while serious, it was still a bit light. This rendition is more angry that the original warning wasn't heeded. Paul Simon liked this version so much he actually complimented / commended them publicly for it. That's saying something.

Simon and Garfunkels version was a warning of what was to come if we didn’t change. Disturbed’s version is rage that we didn’t heed that warning. Great reaction to what I think is the best version!

His voice is one of my favorites ever! I am not a fan of folk music, so I never liked the S&G version. I've heard it since I was a little kid, didn't like the style of music and wasn't old enough to understand the words, so it just went over my head as "Mom & Dad's music." So now that I'm older ... much, much older, lol ... I still don't like folk music, but I appreciate the genius of these lyrics. I never LISTENED to them before Disturbed brought them in a way that captured my attention and was meaningful to me. I think there's enough room for two versions and Disturbed brought this song to a whole new generation. As far as the interpretation goes, I think it's wide open. It can most certainly apply to the internet, social media, people who never speak, but only text or type, but none of that was around when it was written. It means what your own interpretation means. It could apply to social media now, social issues on which people stand divided and silent, the relationships in your own home. That's the beauty of this song ... however it strikes you is what it means. To me, it's all those things. The inability to communicate with one another, the desire to interact, the longing for connection, seeing it, but not able to get there. Which is why I love the visuals of the video. They fit my interpretation. Or maybe I have that interpretation because of the video. Idk. The impact is profound, so thanks to S&G for the lyrics and Disturbed for bringing me to them.

Yes, this is the better version by Disturb doing the song, an the best one I've ever heard. Yeah the original was in the 60s. It truly captured the REAL intent of the a PROTEST SONG. A warning against the tyranny of mind control by governments, commerce, and churches. If I need to remember why "we the people" is the most important part of America, I listen to this. Never let them silence you. Never.

There was no internet when this song was written. The original was released in 1964. The song is about people's inability to communicate with each other. Simon & Garfunkel's version says to me "be careful. This could happen if we don't listen to each other." Disturb's version says to me, through the video, "You didn't listen so this IS what happened." Best cover ever.

There is no way the lyrics are about the Internet. Perhaps today they can have meaning in regards to the Internet, but they were not about the Internet. This song was written by Paul Simon over several months in 1963 and 1964. The Internet didn't come into existence until 1983, two decades later, and most people didn't come in contact with the Internet until the 1990s, three decades after it was originally written. As for who does it better, no contest, DISTURBED has the far more profound rendition. I grew up in the 1970s, so I'd heard Simon and Garfunkel do it many times, but when I heard the DISTURBED, I was blown away. I get goosebumps every time I hear that version. The vocals and instrumentation are phenomenal.

There was no internet when the song was written, but 'neon' could work metaphorically. Imo, neon means superficial stuff--false gods, false prophets, etc. (It was the 1960s/1970s.)

Written by Paul Simon (Simon & Garfunkel) back in '64 so Internet had nothing to do with it! I'd bet that "neon lights" is literal. I would guess it's more about commercialism and the grasping of consumerism causing us to spend less time with each other, as well as businesses not paying attention to the affect their advertisements and push to spend had on communities and individuals.
The wonder of Simon is that it's relevant today....50-60 years later...and it's a matter of just seeing the song through a different reality. It's not difficult to see social media as the new TV/Commercialism of the 60s.
As someone who was around in the 60s, albeit a child, there was a lot of the same protesting then as we're seeing now, but it is so totally different. The 60s was pushing to get new protections and the optimism of that. Here we are 5+decades later and we are fighting the same fights, except to try and keep those things hard won in the 60s & 70s. This song is so much deeper, harsher and louder because we've spent all of that time in between benefiting from those changes made long ago, thinking we could only go forward, only to find that there so many evil people who are trying to erase that progress, to erase people!
Simply put, when you long for something you haven't had and are willing to fight to get it, you feel like you can get it done. When you've had something and someone is taking it from you, the pain is deep and rage is how to fight back.

Written in the sixties during the Vietnam War and also President Kennedy was assassinated a year before or so. I was 5yrs but I remember it. I think every single person since then can relate to the words and have different interpretations and everyone would be right with everything that's going on in the world at the moment. Paul Simon was spot on. I love Disturbed's version because you feel the words and actually its made us all discuss and think about it even if it is just the song and words. It's broken some of the silence. I love David Draimans voice and the band are very talented. I'm a new fan and that comes from growing up an avid Osmond fan. 😂Hi from Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I'll just add another question about the neon light! Is it in this generation, is it about their faces in their phones? In the darkness, depending on what you put on your smartphone screen it's blinding, especially if you had been in a well lit place but didn't turn the color tone down as you walked out into the darkness!
