When Simon and Garfunkel first wrote and recorded this song way back in 1964, it was less intense - a gentler admonition to my generation to pay attention to what was going on in the world around us. Disturbed's version is how much stronger the song *needs* to be now. The gentle warning about lack of empathy and communication in pursuit of the "neon gods" has gone so much further with the advent of electronics, and needs a voice to thunder this warning. Cell phones, tablets, social media "influencers", and the programming we see in everyday life have created a world where, even on crowded public transit, many of the young are so wrapped up in their phones that they have ceased to see the old person, the pregnant woman, the man on crutches - those who are really need a place to sit. Other people have become invisible and inaudible as the young sit, earbuds in and heads bowed to their "electronic gods". And sad to say, I have sincere doubts that even if they hear this song, they are even capable of actually listening to it. David's voice is a voice we need to broadcast from every subway wall...
Paul Simon wrote it and says this is his favorite cover of it. Disturbed caught a lot of grief for doing this cover because it is a hard rock band. This performance is one of the most powerful versions of the song out there. If you listen to the Simon and Garfunkel original and then this one even though they are word for word the same, they are very different interpretations.
I've heard thoughts that you need to think of Simon and Garfunkel's original as the warning. And this version as a really angry, you were warned but no one listened. I love that actually.
To me, Simon and Garfunkel's original song was like a gentle admonition for people to come together and not let ourselves be cut off or divided from one another by technology and differing views. Disturb's remake was more like an urgent wake up call that we're fast approaching the point of no return.
I kind of felt Disturbs cover was less urgent wake-up call and more 'Look, idiots! It's happened! What Simon and Garfunkle warned us about is happening, right now!' Less wake up and more told you so, but that's just me. Either way an amazing song and an even more incredible cover.
Lynn, as a very old man music aficionado I have to agree with you when you called out Mugnify, as this being the original. But, and this is a very Big But, when Disturbed released their Epic Version of Simon and Garfunkle's classic social commentary '60's song it was Paul Simon himself that came out and admitted they had produced a Really Exceptional Heavy Metal Rendition of what was an acoustically performed song. Paul was really blown away by David Drainman's powerful vocals and the depth of the instrumental arrangement.
@@StonesOfThePast isn’t that the most beautiful, powerful and soul stirring rendition of that song? I played it for my husband before he passed and I glanced over and he was crying and said “thank you for that.”
He was classically trained. Simon said this was the best cover he heard. Simon said the people in the 60's wasn't ready for what was coming. He told Disturbed it was his song now.
No, No, you are tragically misinformed. David was NOT classically trained. He was trained as a Cantor in his Jewish high school (who agreed with him that they should part ways), NOT a seminary, and singing cantor is NOT classical. Cantor is singing a prayer. Classical is a genre written in Europe around 1750 to 1830 whereas cantors officially started in the 7th century. (although singing prayers was something very ancient for jews)
I've seen other reactions where people have legit cried during and after watching this music video. According to Dave Draiman (lead singer), the original idea was for Disturbed to make it all huge and angry like they usually do, but their guitarist suggested doing the opposite, and it paid off in a BIG way. People like to say Simon and Garfunkel (original singers back in the 60s) made this song as a warning, and Disturbed's version is in anger that the warning wasn't heeded.
I don’t care how many times I hear this version of this song, the hair stands up on my arms. The lyrics were always thought provoking, but what he did with this made you feel every bit of it.
I grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel singing this. Disturbed took their song and made it a religious experience. His voice reaches inside of you and makes you listen and feel and be immersed within the song itself. There are not many other songs that can do this
This is, by far, one of the deepest version of the song I've ever heard. The singer digs from deep down, almost painfully, to make the lyrics resonate! There's no way that you are going to ignore the message! It seems to be somewhat of a challenge (throwing down the gauntlet, as it were) for people to learn to communicate. The imagery of the instruments on one side of the river and the lyrics and people on the other is intense. For the music to happen, the river must be crossed by both to come together and make the song. COMMUNICATION!
David Draiman's voice is so unique. Before he got into Heavy Metal as a singer, he was training to be a Cantor and had thoughts of being a Rabbi. That is how he is able to use his voice and vocal cords the way he does. He was also classically trained. Simon and Garfunkle love this version of The Sound of Silence. Their version was the "warning" to us all, and Disturbed's version is the anger that people didn't listen to it.
I think that because of the variation in the ways he learned to sing and was trained, that he is able to communicate so many shades and intensities with his voice. That and that he has such emotional depth. It's what allows this piece to be so powerful. The long slow crescendo from beginning to end carries it along perfectly. I'm incapable of listening to this without crying. It gets me every time.
My grandson, now 23, who saw Disturbed when he was young, told me this singer actually sang opera at some point. When I googled him and Disturbed, it was not mentioned. I’m a 76 yr old MeeMaw/rocker and the first time I heard him sing……I probably sat slack jawed for 20 min. It was transcending. Disturbed nailed it!!
This song was played at my fathers funeral 6 years ago. He was a gentle soul suffering from schizofrenia and I loved him so much. Somehowe I feel this song paints a picture of what his life was like after becoming sick and beeing alone with his thoughts…However, its a beautyful song and cover! Love to you all! /J
This song is about people not communicating as much as they used to. And this was the 60s. (Edit: When Simon and Garfunkel did it) It is especially true today.
Interesting take, seems to me like people are communicating too much, oversharing and simultaneously have lost the ability to talk with each other...everyone just seems to be talking at others.
@@sirshade222 To an extent you are correct. But, people aren't communicating now. They are Talking without Speaking (text, social media) and they are hearing without listening (reading text, social media, signage etc....) People are talking AT each other and hearing what they want to hear instead of really listening. That is not communicating.
Cmdr, my military teaching taught me that "communication" or the "lack of communication" is at the core of every problem that ever was or shall be. Kind of like the wisdom of King Soloman. Wiser than anyone ever was or will be;
Simon revealed that the original piece was actually about his friend from Columbia University, who's vision blurred while watching a baseball game. He was misdiagnosed and his optic nerve slowly lost function completely. He then left the university all depressed, and Paul Simon willed him back to school, promising to be his guide around campus, and adopted the nickname "darkness" by his blind friend. The way the blind friend greeted Simon was by saying "Hello, darkness, my old friend"
FALSE. Paul Simon shared it on his social media but HE DID NOT tell Disturbed it's their song now. This is a MYTH circulating TH-cam, regurgitated by people who don't know how to Google. These people are conflating this song with 'Hurt' in which the original singer DID tell Johnny Cash that it's his song now. Let this myth die now.
@cookeymonster83 something I read on line years ago. Now I know not everything one reads is true but damn...chill Next time I'll do a deep dive & research...check. double check...triple check & make sure it's notarized 😂 Daaayyyuuummmm
This is a cover of a song written by Paul Simon and originally recorded by Paul Simon with his singing partner Art Garfunkel. in 1966. Paul Simon was one of the most prolific poets of the 60s and 70s. Most of his work puts the human condition on display.
Growing up in the 70s, I heard the original a lot, and never really cared for it. The first time I heard Disturbed’s cover, it absolutely grabbed me. It doesn’t matter how many times I hear it, it moves me every single time. And Draiman’s voice is absolutely incredible.
Me too. When I first saw the video, I was not expecting what I heard from a guy with those rings (nothing against them). And when the video ended (minus those rotten ads Vimeo stuck in later) I just sat with my mouth hanging open, stunned. I played it at least 5 times in a row just to make sure what I was hearing. I still go back to watch/listen a couple times month.
I am a child of the 60s, so this song is very familiar to me. In fact, I still have may original album. I was really impressed when I heard this version.
Not the original. The writers and original singers Simon and Garfunkel. This is by far my favorite. I to was around when it was first released. Late 60s
When you asked if he could perform this the same way live I had to smile. Listen to a few more songs by Disturbed and you'll find this would be a nice easy song for him.
78 year old female here...I graduated high school when this song originally came out (1964). It was a "cute ditty" that really did not resonate with any of my age group...yeah, S & G got a new hit, yeah, it's cool, just sing along...snore. When I heard Disturbed's version a couple of years ago, I just sat in shock...the words actually spoke to me. I had been a bartender, cocktail waitress, musician all in New Orleans, finally joined the Air Force in 1973, spent more than 20 years in, did a lot of other "stuff" but it took this version of the song to Gibbs slap me and make me realize what S & G had actually written.
@@MugnifyRTS you MUST listen to the live version that also features Myles Kennedy (the lead singer of Alter Bridge -- IMO the best high-tenor rock singer alive) singing harmony. It is FIRE. Dave Draiman, the best bass rock voice, with the best tenor voice... I could listen to it 1000 times and never lose the awe it makes me feel. Here it is: th-cam.com/video/H3By4DZyTNM/w-d-xo.html&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
David draiman is one of the best singers I've ever heard in my entire life he can go from soft to hard in a blink of an eye check out stricken by him I mean by Disturbed and check out the sickness totally contrast each other and you get both the soft and hard in those songs
This song speaks to me on an even deeper level than I have seen mentioned in these comments. It is not so much about the communication but getting a message delivered. It is about the thousands (the masses) staying silent when they know that something needs to be said. Allowing injustices to continue, looking the other way, moving along with a status quo that they know to be wrong. Deep down this song is a call to action for those who are standing idly by and not standing up for what they believe is right.
This version makes my hairs stand on end. This was written in the 60's and it was forecasting what we are seeing now. "Worshipping the neon gods we made". It is speaking of the celebrity culture that was to be, and has been created. They have more influence than their collective intelligence deserves. A celebrity says something and it is almost gospel. The urgency sung in this, conveys the 'last chance saloon' we are all living in.
Essentially... The music companies wouldn't sign Simon unless they could change the songs to be more popular, something that would be watched on TV. Simon was disgusted by the corporate shills destroying true art
I've seen quite a few reaction videos to Disturbed's version, and it seems (to me) there's a generational difference. For those like me, who've grown up with the original and several copies, David's vocals are the pinnacle of our auditory experiences. He's amazing, this video never fails to send shivers down my spine...
This is actually a remake of a 70s song by Simon and Garfunkel. Disturbed did a cover and everyone else decided they wanted to get in on the game. David Draiman is a vocal beast. He can sing songs like this where it shows his chops but then you get into songs like Stupify and Down With the Sickness where you hear his metal voice.
You got it correct, people with words on one side and the instruments on the other side, the water is the silence. I love how it starts silent then slowly as they find the instruments it is add in until all are found and brought to the words to create the music. This an amazing version of this song. I would enjoy more Disturbed on the channel!
@@MugnifyRTS Yes I grew up on rock, I would recommend Down with the sickness, Stupify, Land of confusion, Prayer. there is so many great groups I could recommend from this genre.
I love Disturbed’s version of Sound of Silence because of the build up of energy and how it conveys the passion uniting the written word and music to a crescendo, raw but beautiful. 🇨🇦
Thanks for noticing the imagery regarding the band with the instruments and the people with the song sheets with the gulf between them immediately 👍 You’re the first person I’ve seen who picked that up immediately 😊❤
This is also a cover of Simon and Garfunkel from the 1960s but I actually prefer this cover, it's fantastic. And I am 60 so I was around when the original came out!
Quick FYI, this isn't the original, although it is endorsed by the original artist. The original song is by Simon and Garfunkel, and was made in the 60s.
@@MugnifyRTS Here is a link to the original artists in 1965. This is a very famous song from the 60s. I think you will appreciate what Disturbed did with it even more, if you know the original. th-cam.com/video/nwP3vPQi0nI/w-d-xo.html
I appreciate that you paid attention to the imagery. A lot of people miss the meaning of the boat bringing the instruments to the people so that their songs (voices) could be heard.
I loved your reaction to this cover, so much symbolism in this cover, I am a child of the 60's when Simon & Garfunkel released the original in 1964 I was in high school, back then I considered it kind of country-ish, I liked it but the message didn't pierce the soul. This cover by Disturbed along with the video is the BEST it touches your soul and really gets S&G message to the core of my being and many others too, goosebumps and tears every time. "Neon God" in the 60's TV the advancement of technology NOW there is so many more especially cell phones. "Neon light that split the night", I remember when neon light would turn on there would be a crackling sound thus touched the sound of silence. Suggestion = The official video by Disturbed “Hold On To Memories” was released Jan 23rd 2020. “Hold on to Memories" is about not only honoring those we’ve lost, but also making the most of our time with those we still have.
I take it that you've never heard the original song by Simon and Garfunkel , here it is, th-cam.com/video/4fWyzwo1xg0/w-d-xo.html Disturbed made it their own song. Simon after hearing this version, posted it on his own website, he loved it. Really worth listening too so you can see how much Disturbed changed it
I was in witchita ks one summer and I was driving down the road when this song came on the radio, and I couldn't believe how powerful this song hit me I had to pull over and listen to it.
I would love to hear Simon & Garfunkel perform this with Disturbed. But please remember when this song was written. Disturbed made this video and used the lyrics literally. This song, these lyrics still hold true today. This song touches the soul if you REALLY listen to the lyrics. It's poetry set to music. It always has been.
A quiet voice is an unheard voice. A just voice can only be heard and understood by the just. The sound of silence are the people who fear to cry out about what has happened. Who for what ever reason cannot speak out about the injustice that they see and deal with everyday. I am just a very old and white lady but the song rang true because of my father. I think it is time that we all stopped bowing our heads and raised our voice.
I generally don’t like covers but this is by far my favorite version of this song and I was already familiar with the original Simon and Garfunkel version.
the singer was trained classically as a cantor, a Jewish singer who performs ritual music. Paul Simon is a poet. He and Garfunkle are highly educated people. This is important because of the richness of cultural references people like them bring to their music. You can see this richness also in Queen. You might be aware that all of them are college-educated (Brian May has a PhD in Astrophysics).
What I especially loved was after finding this out that not was he a Cantor but comes from a generational line of them. He also chose to have 0 tattoos out of respect, not just because he didn't want them but out of respect for his heritage but for respect his grandfather but he even removes his piercings when sees them! So not only does he have this amazing instrument but is humble and respectful to his family, If you watch the live on Conan, David had been in the hospital the night before. When he went on Conan, he was still very ill I'ts why he had to sit to perform. Think it's better than studio version!
In opera, you're encouraged to hold your vowels open. When you get into metal, the consonants are held out. Which is what you see David doing here. David Draiman grew up singing in a Jewish choir as a Cantor. That is where he got his vocal training. The training is similar to classical or operatic training but as he decided to go a harder route, some of the vocal rules change. In some parts when he sings the word "sound", notice he holds the word on the "N". Or he holds the R in the word "wisper". That violates rules is opera. The vowels should always be held open in classical music. So normally the "O" in the word "sound" would be held longer rather than the "N". And the "E" would have been held open and longer in "whisper". Opera is very technical. You don't get to change the rules. But David does it😉
Well said. When you know it adds to your appreciation. I think if you don't know , you feel the effect and respond with out being able to put your finger on what made the difference.
Honestly you should have heard the original first. This is not the original. That being said, this is an AMAZING cover of the original 1964 Simon and Garfunkel song "Sound of Silence" and in my opinion it's more in line with what Paul Simon envisioned when he wrote the song. Simon and Garfunkel was a folk band and they were 'encouraged' to stick to that folk 'sound' by their producers for this song. Just over fifty years later, Paul Simon watched Disturbed's version live on The Conan O'Brien Show and took the time to e-mail David Draiman (Disturbed's vocalist) directly, calling his performance "powerful". Paul Simon went on to share Disturbed's Conan performance on his social media as a "must watch". Could there be any higher honor for a cover than this? The man who wrote the song suggested this cover to his fans, as something they needed to watch and listen to.
this is about people forgetting how to communicate because they are too busy watching tv. instead of having personal interactions they're sitting at home alone with their "Neon God" the tv listening to it's one- way conversation. It was a warning.
David was also trained as a cantor which I always credited for his range & breath control. If you listen to his vocals in his usual Disturbed songs, you’ll really catch how he utilises his vocals in insanely diverse ways.
The lyrics were written in the 1960s, by Simon and Garfunkel. It reigned as my favorite song until I heard this version. It never fails to raise goosebumps.
Dear Sir, Dear Mugnify - the original was written and sung by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel . And let this oldster add......those were the days !!!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
In the video, silence is created when there is a divide (sea) exists between those that write music and those that play music. If you don't have both, then all you have is silence. Now, originally the song was intended to show a divide in personal communication. In the 1960's when the song was originally written, the Neon Light (television & pop culture) was the divide between people having conversations. People stopped talking to one another at dinner tables and instead watched TV while they ate is an example of this phenomenon. Nowadays, cellphones/tablets/internet can be seen as the divide in personal communication.
The original is about the separation of humanity from humanity. Since music videos didn't exist then, the visual of having what appears to be an instrument graveyard separated from the people and then coming back together at the end is even more powerful to bring that message forward.
David Draiman is a trained Cantor which is where the operatic sound comes from and his rendition of this beautiful song is made so impactful by the pure power of his voice. The divide you mentioned, with instruments on one side and music scores on the other (at least to me) illustrates the ability of music & musicians to express the desires & hopes of the people, musics can say, touch (in their hearts & minds) & reach out to people that most people can't. "Without music, life would be a mistake" - a misquote from the movie "Here Come the Bang"
This song introduced me to Disturbed. I am a 76 year old grandma, and I fell deeply in love with this version. Yes....Intense and SO Powerful ! When it was written, I was in High School. When I was in High School...during my biology class, the office PA system interrupted class to tell us that president John Fitzgerald Kennedy had just been shot ...in Dallas. I Walked home that day .......................and life was never, ever the same again. Somehow, this version by Disturbed encapsulates ALL of that for me. And then I cry.
To young folk this rendition may seem like the first. And even the old man that I am, I respect and admire...hell I LOVE this version. I'm a rocker at heart. Disturbed is Rock and Roll to the core. Agree with Wes in that it's a totally different take on the lyrics than Simon and Garfunkel's original. But...we have to giveit up to the OGS. These guys are the originals. My favorite is (forgive me Mug) the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame version of three touching songs by Simon and Garfunkel. Mug, do yourself a favor...hell, do ALL OF US a favor and do a reaction to the entire contribution of S & G from this link. You will love it, you will rock out, and if you have a heart in your chest... you will cry. It's twenty minutes of your life that you will never regret spending. I mean for me? It's about a good two hours if I add up the total number of times I've watched/listed to it. If you do a reaction, just know it's about twenty total minutes and three songs. th-cam.com/video/QcgBgnTknDM/w-d-xo.html
This song is hypothetically about the death of music and how quiet the world would be without it.. hence, the sound of silence 🤐.. when you really let the message sink in it makes the song even more beautiful
I agree, the lyrics are dark like Poe. Great comparison. Your interpretation, even not knowing the back story of the original of the '60s is spot on! Excellent! David Draiman's voice is classically trained but he's a huge hard metal rock singer! Talk about a dichotomy of genres!
The water represents the chasm between people trying to communicate in a fragmented world where “the neon god they’ve made” has robbed them of the ability to understand each other. Therefore, the sound of silence.
This version of the song make my tears flow every time, makes me understand the meaning of this song. It is what happends around us today, I feel so sad and lost because of all the devastating evil in this world coming from how we live. Dead things are more important than nature and live soulful communication. The computers, the mobile, money, the Neongood if you may... is all what we really care about, or so it feels most of the time. Ann from Norway
There are only a couple of recordings that bring tears to my eyes and touch something deep inside. One is Luciano Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma from Turandot, the other is Sound of Silence cover by Disturbed.
The original was written and released by Simon and Garfunkel in 1967. Disturbed's cover is massive and tremendous and, by the bye, has been added to his personal song list by Paul Simon himself. The words are exactly the same ... the times are different in some ways, and the same in other ways...but the message rings true...
All of the way you was reacting to the video to the song from the lyrics. I love the way you analyse the song, especially the vocals. I love to know what your full opinion of this is. It’s always blown my mind whenever I hear his voice singing this song. Thank you I have signed up. God bless peace. ❤
The song is about meditation. When creation comes from within; when you can block out even you're own thoughts. Beethoven said his music was given to him when he was quiet. Writing songs that voices never shared is the writing of that song before it was ever sung. It comes from the silence within everybody. If you can silence your own mind.
I know this was done a year ago, but I heard another person talking about this video. In the song they talked about talking without speaking and the neon gods we made. This is the internet and smart phones. I'm very impressed this song was wrote in the early '60's!
Yea I love how he did this song. He has a deep, rich, beautiful voice and it grows more and more powerful as the song goes on and then that last 'of silence', it sends chills down my back every time I hear it. I do like the the original, but I like this one better.
Im glad you took the time for the words. This epic presentation delivering Simons message through David voice is powerfully relevant today as it was then. Yet still we haven't learned....yet.
i'm so glad you got the imagery of the separation of the people with the instruments from those that wrote the music and the river as the silence between them. i love how they are coming together at the end. I just hope it's soon enough.
Simon and Garfunkel wrote this over 50 years ago. This song was away before it's time and so appropriate just now. I love this version but hats off mainly to Paul Simon who wrote most of this iconic song. Simon and Garfunkel Bridge Over Trouble Water a must♥️
as im sure others have said this is a cover of a song by simon & Garfunkel from the 1960s personally i find Disturbed's version MUCH BETTER then the original. but what is truly amazing about this song is the fact that its message & meaning is just as powerful today as it was back when the original came out.
3:00 - You didn't need to pull up any lyrics, all you needed to do was to activate the video subtitles. 😉 8:06 - Finally someone else understood Disturbed's interpretation of the lyrics! You got a like from me because of that. 🙂
So few reactors get the significance of the instruments and the written music. I call this video my “gateway drug” into Disturbed. NEVER LIKED METAL now I listen to them almost every day. Thank you for a truly thoughtful reaction. Some suggestions…STRICKEN…STUPIFY…DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS…PRAYER. Those are some of their harder songs. Some more mellow songs…HOLD ON TO MEMORIES (the official live version is my favorite)…THE LIGHT.
First time I have ever watched you , although I have heard this version of The Sound of Silence. I like how interested you are in all aspects of the video- sight and sound. Your approach seems very open-minded and genuine which is fantastic , so keep It up! I can recommend 2 videos for you that blew my mind when I watch them for the first time. If you haven't already reacted to them they are: Angelina Jordan singing "I PutA Spell On You" and Dan Vasc singing "Amazing Grace". I look forward to seeing your facial responses to two of my all-time favorites. Meanwhile, take care. 🙂
This is a cover from a song from the ‘60s. Originally done by Simon and Garfunkel. It is also a great version
Simon actually stated that he prefers this version over the original. Really stellar work by Disturbed.
@Biggs that's awesome. But not the point... this is NOT the Original!
Better than original to be honest
Well said. I like this version much more because that's how I feel about the current times.
Right On !!!
I kind of felt Disturbs cover was less urgent wake-up call and more 'Look, idiots! It's happened! What Simon and Garfunkle warned us about is happening, right now!' Less wake up and more told you so, but that's just me. Either way an amazing song and an even more incredible cover.
True but small matter of it’s disturbed not disturbs 😊
I see this version as a wake up call for everyone to look up from their phones (neon lights) and experience the world as one. 🦋💖
It kinda broke my heart when you said "the original version" when us old generations know this was an ultimate classic by Simon and Garfunkle
BUT I have to add that I am à big fan of Disturbed and I am very, very proud of their cover!!
I know exactly how you feel 😆
Yep, me too 😫
Never liked the original but love Disturbed and their version but yes you are correct on the original artists

So true.

I believe he blew up the rabbis car 🤣
Absolutely facts! Disturbed is so talented and brings us into the voice, song, and video. Stunning
So glad you told a bout David's back ground🎉
Wow, thanks for sharing that bit of info. I agree this is his song now he did it justice.
And the Pentatonix cover has the hope that it will yet be heeded.
This song reaches in and grabs your soul.
Preach!
Love your explanation
He's actually a heavy metal singer... Screams for a living... But is classically trained as a cantor... Phenomenal voice ❤️
@@StephanieLangley-to6ph he does not scream
I don’t care how many times I hear this version of this song, the hair stands up on my arms. The lyrics were always thought provoking, but what he did with this made you feel every bit of it.
Agree 💯
I grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel singing this. Disturbed took their song and made it a religious experience. His voice reaches inside of you and makes you listen and feel and be immersed within the song itself. There are not many other songs that can do this
I'd totally go to Temple if David was Cantor!
Excellent interpretation.
I dig it, Jacqueline, the rendition is truly "Disturbed" th-cam.com/video/QcgBgnTknDM/w-d-xo.html
No, you are tragically misinformed. David was NOT classically trained.
Davids vocal is fantastic. The fact the viideo was done in black and white just adds to the mood.
Dude... That made me cry
David’s voice is beyond phenomenal! I absolutely love this version of the song!! Gives me chills every single time! 🔥
@@sirshade222
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
@@sirshade222 To an extent you are correct. But, people aren't communicating now. They are Talking without Speaking (text, social media) and they are hearing without listening (reading text, social media, signage etc....) People are talking AT each other and hearing what they want to hear instead of really listening. That is not communicating.
Cmdr, my military teaching taught me that "communication" or the "lack of communication" is at the core of every problem that ever was or shall be. Kind of like the wisdom of King Soloman. Wiser than anyone ever was or will be;
Simon revealed that the original piece was actually about his friend from Columbia University, who's vision blurred while watching a baseball game.
Best cover of this song EVERRRRR! Hands down. Even Simon (original artist Simon & Garfunkel) stated that this song belonged to him, David, now.
Now I know not everything one reads is true but damn...chill
Next time I'll do a deep dive & research...check. double check...triple check & make sure it's notarized 😂
Daaayyyuuummmm
This is a cover of a song written by Paul Simon and originally recorded by Paul Simon with his singing partner Art Garfunkel. in 1966. Paul Simon was one of the most prolific poets of the 60s and 70s. Most of his work puts the human condition on display.
Yes.
Growing up in the 70s, I heard the original a lot, and never really cared for it. The first time I heard Disturbed’s cover, it absolutely grabbed me. It doesn’t matter how many times I hear it, it moves me every single time. And Draiman’s voice is absolutely incredible.
Sorry you missed the message the first time. Same message. The song is a warning
Goosebumps every time I hear this. Amazing voice and very powerful message we should heed . 💜
Yes, me too! Every time. I like to see people's first reaction to this song. I want to hear it on a good sound system, where you could really feel it.
And when his tones change, do that also, lol
Goosebumps for sure! My favorite cover of this song.
Every single time.
I am a child of the 60s, so this song is very familiar to me. In fact, I still have may original album. I was really impressed when I heard this version.
I have the Albun too. I also have the 45 record. WOW, Dating myself! LOL✌
Not the original. The writers and original singers Simon and Garfunkel. This is by far my favorite. I to was around when it was first released. Late 60s

I love Simon and Garfunkel, and I never would have thought anyone else could touch this song. But this version gives me chills.
David was classically trained to be a cantor for his religion ...his voice is AMAZING !!
One of THE most beautiful renditions I’ve ever heard! His voice is perfection.
Trained as a Cantor.
Yes David, lead singer was originally trained as a Cantor in his Temple. What an amazing talent and voice.
Please do the live version of this song too ❤️
The Conan One?
@@MugnifyRTS yessss
The Conan one is way better. But this one is definitely amazing.
Here it is:

Saw Disturbed in concert and they played this song! I got teary eyed! Hearing it live was so moving!
David draiman is one of the best singers I've ever heard in my entire life he can go from soft to hard in a blink of an eye check out stricken by him I mean by Disturbed and check out the sickness totally contrast each other and you get both the soft and hard in those songs
There's several of their songs that I love especially Hold On To The Memories, The Light and A Reason To Fight.
Interesting take. My own thought when he sang "and the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made" was that he was referring to television.
Essentially... The music companies wouldn't sign Simon unless they could change the songs to be more popular, something that would be watched on TV. Simon was disgusted by the corporate shills destroying true art
❤David Draimen has one of the BEST AND EMOTIONAL VOICES ON EARTH! l absolutely LOVE Disturbed and Im 62❤
This is better than the original in my personal opinion ❤️
Simon and Garfunkel released this in 1964. It was their first really big hit.
@@suemoore6445 sorry I knew it was in that vicinity. I was negative 2 but No grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel
You got it correct, people with words on one side and the instruments on the other side, the water is the silence. I love how it starts silent then slowly as they find the instruments it is add in until all are found and brought to the words to create the music. This an amazing version of this song. I would enjoy more Disturbed on the channel!
Natasha I didnt know you were a fan!
I have seen a couple of others notice it, but that is out of dozens of reactors I have watched.
If you want a true appreciation for David Draiman's vocals, check out his performance of this epic song on Conan.
I'm a 70's gal and Disturbia did this song so much better than the original two singers. Never heard it better.
This is also a cover of Simon and Garfunkel from the 1960s but I actually prefer this cover, it's fantastic. And I am 60 so I was around when the original came out!
My God the emotions…the passion..the anger and everything else…wow. I listen to this ever day. He also speed the rhythm on other verso s. Love it!
Quick FYI, this isn't the original, although it is endorsed by the original artist. The original song is by Simon and Garfunkel, and was made in the 60s.
Damn sure felt like an original!
Great reaction, dude. You caught more things than most do in their first listen. Awesome job. Subbed.
I take it that you've never heard the original song by Simon and Garfunkel , here it is, th-cam.com/video/4fWyzwo1xg0/w-d-xo.html
Disturbed made it their own song.
You can feel
The emotion from beginning to end with each word and lyric, wooooooooo, btw got a sub from me
Little known fact, he is a classically trained opera singer. Surprise.❤
Goosebumps and tears EVERY time I hear this! What amazing voice David has!!
Well done. You got the main gist of this iconic, amazing song.
So not only does he have this amazing instrument but is humble and respectful to his family,
If you watch the live on Conan, David had been in the hospital the night before. When he went on Conan, he was still very ill I'ts why he had to sit to perform. Think it's better than studio version!
I get chills every time!!!
I love your reactions brother, subbed.
But David does it😉
I know Nothing about Opera, I should probably share this info with a TH-cam Short
Well said.
When you know it adds to your appreciation. I think if you don't know , you feel the effect and respond with out being able to put your finger on what made the difference.
Nobody ever acknowledges the “Ark” before you! Good job
Check out the live version on the Connan show it'll blow you away
David was also trained as a cantor which I always credited for his range & breath control. If you listen to his vocals in his usual Disturbed songs, you’ll really catch how he utilises his vocals in insanely diverse ways.
Definitely check out the live show on the Conan show, awesome thanks 😀
The lyrics were written in the 1960s, by Simon and Garfunkel. It reigned as my favorite song until I heard this version. It never fails to raise goosebumps.
This is not the original. The original was done by Simon and Garfunkel back in the 60s. Personally I like this one way better!!
So do I! Maybe because he makes the warning more intense - ominous
So glad you pulled up the lyrics. Such a strong message.
I really enjoyed your take.
Best Version ever David and Disturbed own this song.❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
I actually sang the first verse as a homecoming contest. Didn’t expect the overwhelming positivity from it
This song introduced me to Disturbed.
No. Do yourself a favor and look up the meaning of the song.
I listen to this when my head gets messed up. i know its strange but it gets me straight. It truly is a work of art. He uses his voice to the extreme.
It’s fun taking this trip with you! And Simon and Garfunkel did the original decades before.
I mean, Simon & Garfunkel did it good back then. David takes it to your soul.
I can’t help cry every time I hear it.
Even Paul Simon said this cover was epic. ‘Nuff said.
The Live Version on Conan oBrien was insane! Its worth the watch- the passion is insane

The original was Simon and Garfunkel, 60s. To really appreciate what Disturbed did with this song, you need to hear the original. David is a genius!
as im sure others have said this is a cover of a song by simon & Garfunkel from the 1960s personally i find Disturbed's version MUCH BETTER then the original. but what is truly amazing about this song is the fact that its message & meaning is just as powerful today as it was back when the original came out.
