Kylo Ren Vs Luke Analyzed and Explained | Lightsaber Duels

  • Welcome to a new series on the channel where I will go through almost every lightsaber duel out of the Star Wars Saga. For the first analysis, I went with Kylo Ren verse Luke Skywalker on Crait. I thought it was a very intense, but short fight. It leaned more on the emotional side of things than the spectacle. The cinematography of the duel is outstanding as well. The Last Jedi may have angered a lot of Fans, but I think there is a lot fo love about this film. Enjoy my deep dive and analysis!
Also, sorry for the weird overlay on the footage. It's a necessary evil sometimes.

Doesn't really matter, Luke had no intention of allowing Kylo to kill him. If he had, It likely wouldve ended any hope of turning him. Plus who knows, timewise he cut it close even with the projection, Xwing might've been slow. Or maybe he didn't have a way to track them and projecting to Leia was his only option. Any number of explanations.

The Last Jedi gave Luke the most jedi ending ever. It was peaceful and nobody died expect for himself. He sacrificed himself to become a symbol of hope for the galaxy. Not only did he perform the most powerful force ability we've ever seen, but it also fits perfectly into the themes of the movie. As a force projection, he was literally the embodiment of hope. Carrying the legacy of the Luke Skywalker that the galaxy and the audience always believed in. The legend he himself at first didn't believe in, but at the end realizing the importance and power that myths has for inspiring future generations. Honestly it had so much meaning from so many perspectives. For Kylo, this duel symbolized his inner conflict with killing the past. While desperately trying to fight it, he realized that it's impossible to kill the past. No matter how much he tries to forget, he will always live with what he has done.
What Yoda teaches is to learn from the past, which Kylo doesn't understand.. and he suffers from it.

The only movie that really comes across to me with a lot of meaning without even me trying to analyze it is Fast and Furious. Especially the last fast and furious that Paul Walker was in, the ending when they on the beach and he leaves. That was a masterpiece and nearly made me cry as much as I hate to say it. Paul Walker was my favorite movie actor and it hit me hard seeing that he was gone. Those fast and furious movies are easy to realize the meaning behind it all. It’s all about family if it’s blood or not just make sure it’s true family and always stay loyal to them.

The difference between a Jedi and a Sith is that Jedi practice tranquility, fighting while maintaining inner peace and not allowing themselves to slip into the dark side, while a Sith practices rage, hatred, and any other negative emotion to fuel their power. In the first place, during the days of the Republic, Jedi actively participated in wars against the Sith empire, much like they did in the Clone Wars era. There was only one Jedi that never fought, and probably never even had a lightsaber. However, she was literally an embodiment of the light side.

A director puts in a lot of work so we can understand the feelings they are trying to convey with the film. Every angle, close up, set design choice, and audio choice are designed with what the viewer will understand from the scene in mind. You can go to a film to have fun and enjoy a story but that film is still crafted in a way that will make you understand the feeling in the scene wether you realize it or not.
In a work of literature, words and description and dialogue are all you have. But a film can’t show you in words how a shot is supposed to make you feel. So techniques are used to make us feel something other then just watching flashing colours on a screen.

    • @skyguy675

@@devilboyraden I mean, force projection was already well established in the lore in many other pieces of Star Wars media (a lot of which were comissioned by Lucas), Mother Talsin, Darth Bane, Force ghosts in general, so calling it bullshit just because it shows up in a film is a bit much.
With the same logic you could say Palpatine's force lightning was bullshit, it showed up last minute and was never alluded to prior. Force Projection is such a good way for Luke to got out, giving him a sense of power and composure to compliment his status if wise old sage. He dies peacefully and more than a little bit smugly as his cunning approach outwits Kylo's brash, impatient desire to fight.
Yeah, people can overanalyse, but useually because there is something of substance there to begin with and sometimes its fun to just run rampant with it, elevating the source material to something of meticulous and multi-faceted detail.

      1. That's not how the force works. It's an instinctual thing. Some people are far more in tune with it than others. Luke used the force in ep4 by closing his eyes, clearing his mind and breathing deeply. That was it. Many fans misunderstand. They think it's a skill. Training is needed for a lightsaber, or to refine some specifics. Not to feel and use the force. Practice and so on are necessary of course. Refinement and exploration of it all need training yes. But the force is something that is inately taped into, a belief in yourself, a calmness and a sense of surrender to its will, that is what using it requires. In a moment of life or death, in a moment where these instinctual feelings of self preservation are acting, Leia basically subconsciously taps into the force to save herself.
      2. That unnecessary exposition about Snoke sounds clunky and out of place. It's not relevant to the story. Who needs it. Though it would still be cool. I just don't think it's a deal breaker. As for Rey. We got her backstory. She was the one who said that her parents were nobodies, not Kylo. She said it first, she saw it in the cave. It's not a lie of Kylo's. It's not something that will be retconned as JJ has said he isn't retconning anything and he is very happy with episode 8.

Luke Skywalker destroyed the first Death Star which, incidentally, had a crew in excess of 1 million. Pretty sure not all of them were complete evil, just guys doing a job. He also straight up murdered a bunch of dudes that time he went to visit Jabba.
What the REAL Luke wouldn't have done is try to murder his nephew in his sleep because he saw a vision of him turning to the Dark Side. Luke risked his life to save a father he had never known and who was legitimately the 2nd most evil man in the entire universe. There's no way in a million years that Luke would have sensed some evil in Ben's future and then struck at him in anger. That is the thing REAL fans are pissed about.

Lord Megatron dude honestly, Yoda even says Jedi never Attack but no one actually pays attention to the movie, when he blew up the death star he wasn’t a Jedi, and I’m pretty sure Luke wasn’t a Jedi Master in Return Of The Jedi, even Yoda thought it was foolish to try and bring back Anakin. The only reason why Luke was about to attack Ben was because he saw a terrible future where his ENTIRE FAMILY is massacred but he even said he was foolish. Maybe if people were able to pay attention to the film they would understand. And just because I have a certain opinion doesn’t mean I’m not a REAL fan, I hate when people use that phrase, there is no such thing as a real fan but there are toxic fans who don’t think before they act and start to ruin actors careers and harass an actor so bad that the actor wanted to commit suicide, just because the toxic fandom wasn’t satisfied

This is an amazing take on the duel. I would like to add one thing: When they reveal that Luke is a projection, they use the imagery of him floating in the air on a mountaintop, meditating in the Lotus Position. This is the traditional divine imagery associated with Hindu deities like Vishnu and Shiva, or with Buddha. It's imagery that represents Enlightenment and divine power over all the elements and mastery of one's own life and destiny. He is physically and metaphorically in a higher place than Kylo Ren. That one shot is essentially communicating that Luke has achieved a sort of divine status, or God Mode, if you will. The whole concept of Force Projection represents the power of how even the mere image or symbol of a hero can defeat an entire army and the mightiest of enemies. It's a Godlike being sending the image of his most ideal form to save the lives of the few who will go on to save the lives of the many (Yes, I'm paraphrasing Star Trek on a Star Wars video). If you're going to tell me that this is Rian Johnson "disrespecting" Luke I really don't know what else to say. There's such attention to detail with this fight. I wish detractors would acknowledge that and maybe reconsider their stance.

Luke ascended to the level of Jedi wizard in this film, conjuring magic, mystifying the consciousnesses of all involved. And the fact that he's floating above the meditation rock, the force flowing through him so strongly, is this marvellous little detail that evokes floating Buddhist monks, or Pai-Mei levels of mastery. Oh come off your high horse. It's really insulting to insinuate that people who don't like it just don't get it. People understand the deeper themes of this movie(because honestly, it's really not that deep.). By this point in the movie, fans are suppose to believe that Luke has given up on the Jedi despite the fact that he changed what it meant to even be a Jedi in ROTJ. Therefore, Luke had no reason to be disillusioned by the Jedi or the Force. He was the answer to all the problems with Prequel Era Jedi. Luke was compassionate rather than stoic to those around him. Even his enemies. Doing this helped him succeed where no previous Jedi could. Now we're supposed to believe Luke almost kills his nephew in his sleep and then hides away on an island waiting to die because "the Force doesn't belong to the Jedi...?" This was never a thing Jedi believed. This movie *tries* it's best to deliver a thought provoking commentary on the Star Wars mythos but fails to understand it.

I'm sorry, but as a Hema practitioner, comparing somebody who runs at his enemy with his blade behind his body leaving his entire body exposed to opposing strikes to Kendo is a disgrace. He swings the lightsaber around like its a stick, one handed with no control over his blade fueled by rage and aggression. In the original trilogy we learned that a lightsaber is a powerful weapon which most of the time is to be used two handed, and kylo just swings this unstable saber around like its nothing. The rest of your analysis really opened up my eyes on this movie tho, great vid.

Actually if anything your supposed to use lightsabers one handed (for duels) since there is no need to put force into swinging. Just look at makashi form for example. But I agree how he swings very aggressive and not smart. You should be keeping distance as if you were wielding a rapier

Imagine, using two hands for that attack. Potentially more force and better precision and with the momentum behind a two handed strike, you could technically maintain that power while swapping to a one handed grip for an unexpected follow up attack.

Listen, I'm going to be honest here -- I am in a state of actual mourning. Not only is The Last Jedi my favorite Star Wars film, it is possibly my favorite film, ever. I left the theatre dazzled and wonderstruck and moved to my core, and that feeling remained for two years. The more I went on to pick it apart, the more I found; every detail so deeply considered, every symbol weight bearing, an exquisite clockwork of a film. I feel foolish now for ever having thought it could be equaled, for having been so excited to view another instalment of something so good, and now looking forward at little more than eternity crying out my worship for a thing castaway on a sea of complaints that entirely miss the point. All of this is just a preamble to say, thank you for considering an artwork with open mind, thank you for lovingly admiring it's little details, for giving it even a little time and dignity.

It doesn't sound like a "no" of anger that he's been duped. There is a bit of pain in that delivery. Kylo is killing his family and it's painful for him. It's why he hesitates firing those missiles at his mother. Perhaps if Kylo is really afraid of something, then it more than likely would be the loss of his family.

I think he did it so Leia could escape but also so he could try and reach her son without causing the child more psychological damage than he already had. I’m still stuck on that quote from Resistance Reborn “no one can save Ben but himself.” DONT get me wrong I don’t think Luke was trying to “save” Ben in that moment, but allowing him to let out his rage with no consequences and he died doing it. That had to mean something to Ben Solo not Kylo Ren but Ben Solo Leia and Han’s son.

This duel is a confirmation of how deep Rian Johnson managed to go with the characters and their relationships, as much as he wanted to play with the imagery of the saga. He said: "Let's take the classic duel moment and transform it in something deeper and unique". No surprise a lot of fans got angry with this. But definitively this is what the movie needed.

Rogue one showed thr cruelty of war and had the whole cast die. Revenge of the sith showed a man literally burning alive. This film shows you an emo kid fighting a ghost and you call it adult? Lol get out

@@pseudonymousbeing987 it is. The sfx, vfx, and although most of the imagery is copied it still is improved upon. However theres a lot more to a movie than cinematography like that little thing called STORY

@@elijahlee3610 Yes. This movie showed just an emo kid, not a story about regret and forgiving, about how the world never tells you the truth you wanna hear, about accepting failure, about trusting the others and not only your ego. Oh, i quite forgot: a movie that clearly says that behind good and evil there's only money.
By the way, with "adult content" I was not referring to the graphic violence. If you base your judgement about how much "adult" a movie is only on the violence it shows, then you're truly immature.

    • @elijahlee3610
      @elijahlee3610 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@andreaconti9927 the connotation of the term "adult content" usually alludes to graphic content, however I was referring to both graphic content and hidden gems. Rogue one is the more adult film in terms of themes as well as graphic content. Revenge of the sith is a more adult film mosty because it's a tragedy.
"A story about regret and forgiving" sounds a little like ep6. Difference is ep6 didnt ruin the lore surrounding its predecessors. "About how the world never tells you the truth you want to hear" sounds like anakin's arc, except his had actual weight. "About accepting failure" literally all of star wars. In Luke's case the failures he suffered through shouldn't have happened in the first place. The way you describe these basic narrative attributes seems pretty pretentious as it can be done to nearly any movie good or bad. Finding Nemo, a story about regret and forgiving. Shark tale, a story about how the world never tells the truth you want to hear. Speed racer a story about accepting failure. Incredibles 2 a story of trusting others and not only yourself.
In any case its amusing to see apologists try to find deeper meaning in these films, dogmatically preach of it, and call those who dont agree immature or ignorant. This isnt an edger Allen poe poem, this is star wars, a franchise where wizards fight each other with telekinesis and laser swords. Star wars in itself is a basic concept, finding deeper meaning may add a level of depth and enjoyment but still doesnt change what star wars essentially is nor does it compensate for the fundamentally broken plot the movie in question possesses.

This duel is the most underrated in all of Star Wars. It is beautiful and perfectly understands the characters, there is so much emotional conflict.
I love Duel of the Fates, but how am I meant to care about any of the people fighting in it when we don't even know their motivations apart from "they're enemies"

Way better than Shadiversity's series. He is way too critical of the Sequels and it honestly gets incredibly annoying when he critiques a massive battle between 10 people and praises a battle between two. Choreography obviously isn't going to look as good with 10 people and it's also not ment to be paused and slowed down every few seconds. Same case with between two.

I'm guessing maybe AOTC? It can get a little frantic in the edit room trying to convey the scale of battle. That's my biggest hang-up in AOTC but some of the beats, like mace decapitating jengo is 💰.

@@isharkyshark3974 here's an apologist that cant accept reality. When Shadversity reviewed the fights he was taking into account the flashy aspect of the fight. He knew that star wars doesnt follow real world styles closely and thus only criticized mistakes in the choreography or editing. For instance real world or not there is no reason why your second weapon should disappear when its convenient for the plot. Unless it's one of Rey's new force abilities to make things go away. Real world or not there should be no reason why when your opponents back is exposed you spin again to give them time to see you. Real world or not there should be no reason why kicking 1 person causes all enemies in the surrounding area to feel the kick as well. Real world or not there should be no reason why people should choke themselves to make sure a grapple looks realistic. Real world or not there should be no reason why random swinging actually manages to fit trained guards. The prequels may be flashy but shadversity critically reviewed battle of heroes in the same fashion and called quite a number of things stupid but he still overall deemed it a better fight because there are less mistakes and the choreography makes sense within universe.
