  • For the latest Lexus ES pricing and information:
    www.kbb.com/lexus/es/
It’s been a few years since we’ve reviewed a Lexus ES.
But it remains one of the best-selling luxury cars you can buy. And we did commission this graphic. So let’s talk about it.
The 7th generation Lexus ES was introduced for the 2019 model year. When it launched, we at the Blue Book lauded its muted cabin and graceful road manners.
I can confirm that all of that praise still applies.
Oh, and the seats are still the gold standard for supportive, pressure-point free sitting. In the rear, legroom is ample, and, despite a sleek roofline, headroom is plentiful. The trunk provides 16.7 cu-ft of space; a workable figure though it’d be more workable if the rear seatbacks folded. With luck you’ll never haul anything larger than this passthrough allows. As for material quality, the interior feels soft in all the right places.
I really like the tasteful stitching, this cushy shin pad, and these squishy arm rests for my impossibly delicate elbows.
Yes, you’ll find hard plastic if you look for it but overall, premium vibes dominate. Other niceties include a two-way opening center console cover, a dual-height cup holder, and this little guy for those who associate analogue clocks with luxury.
For its mid-cycle update, the ES benefited from a range of minor styling tweaks inside and out. For comparison here’s the OG 7th gen ES (2019) alongside the refreshed standard ES (2022). Heads up, we’re driving the F Sport. More on that shortly.
Following its mid-cycle refresh, Lexus also opted to revise the infotainment system.
I’d previously complained that the ES’s screen was not a touch screen. Well, Lexus heard my lamentations and made it a touchscreen. They also moved it 4.3-inches closer to the driver. Yeah, you can still control it with Lexus’s haptic feedback Remote Touch Interface…but now you don’t have to.
As for screen sizes there’s a standard 8-inch unit and an optional 12.3-inch unit, each offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.
Hitting on powertrains there’s a standard 3.5L V6 (ES 350: 302 hp, 267 lb-ft) teamed with an 8-speed automatic transmission and there’s an optional hybrid (ES 300h: 215 Total System Horsepower). And here are the fuel economy figures. (ES 350: 22city/32hwy) (ES 300h: 43city/44hwy) Holy cow that hybrid has great fuel economy.
    Hybrid brakes comment
    VO: And now something weird. For the same price you’d pay for a front-wheel drive V6 ES 350 you can also get a less-powerful ES 250 with a 2.5L 4-cylinder (203hp, 184 lb-ft) and all-wheel drive.
If you’re willing to trade power for traction, you now have that choice.
Filling out the price picture, for a little less than $41,000, not including destination charges, you can snag a base Lexus ES 350 or ES 250 all-wheel drive featuring LED head and taillights, a moonroof, smart entry with push button start, and 10-way power front seats. Tack on an extra $1,100 if you’d rather drive the ES 300h hybrid. And, of course, you can ascend the Lexus ES trim ladder to unlock features like leather heated and ventilated seats, a power rear sunshade, a panoramic moonroof, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, a 360-degree camera system, and wireless phone charging. Choose the priciest ES 300h Ultra Luxury trim, and you’ll spend more than $51-grand to start.
For folks who’d like a veneer of sportiness, the F Sport trim, like we’re driving, adds sporty details inside and out and is offered with all three powertrains. For perspective here’s a side-by-side (Standard ES 350 vs ES 350 F Sport). F Sport-ified ES’s used to automatically include an adaptive suspension along with Sport+ and Custom drive modes. But now those features are bundled in a separate “Dynamic Handling Package”.
So, if you want to look sporty without actually driving sportily, you can save a few bucks.
One last bit of praise. The ES includes a standard suite of safety and driver assist tech including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, 10 airbags, blind spot monitoring, Intersection Turning Assist that can help keep you from turning in the path of oncoming traffic, and lane departure warning with steering assist.
Let’s see if I can stupidly vacate my lane. (LKA demo) The Lexus says no.
VO: If you’re curious about ES alternatives, consider the less expensive Acura TLX and Cadillac CT5. You might also ponder the notably pricier Genesis G80 with its evocative style and a performance-focused rear-wheel drive platform. But among comparable luxury sedans, the Lexus ES has an advantage.
It’s a Lexus, offering the reliability and strong residual values that come with a Lexus badge. It’s also comfortable, stylish, and reasonably priced. If you want to know why Lexus sells so many ES’s, there’s your answer.

Why do people want a sporty luxury car? That’s like having a watch dog who doubles as a lap dog. Maybe they just enjoy back pain. If you want a sports car, get one. If you want a luxury car, get one. I hate having chronic pain and not being able to find a comfortable car anymore because Zoomers and people in midlife crisis want to pretend they’re on the Indy 500. I had a Chrysler 300C in 2008. They now have racing seats. That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen. Either get a luxury sedan or a sports car. Lexus makes an RC.

My 71 year old mother will grab a 2022 in 2024 to replace her 2010 ES. I'm a car guy but I can see why people LOVE this car. It's not a sports car and doesn't pretend to be but my GOD does the thing do everything well. She never had a single issue with the thing.

There isn't a better car for worry free, point A-to-B, comfortable transport. Not my style of car but the appeal is clear. An ES350 AWD would be a wonderful addition to the line. Forcing the weak 4-cylinder on people who want AWD is just wrong.

They used to make the GS350 which was almost the same car in appearance but was AWD with the V6, but dimensionally was more Camry-based where the ES was longer on the Avalon base. Unfortunately these days Toyota is consolidating platforms more and more. I own a 2013 ES350 and honestly there's not many groundbreaking differences between it and the one shown here.

Lexus ES outsold the Avalon 2:1 in the last 3 years. As good as the Avalon is/was, it wasn't preventing customers from choosing the ES over it. When the ES was based on the Camry, the Camry was outselling it more than 6:1. The current ES is based on the Avalon and its outselling the lesser priced Avalon. The Avalon is killed because consumers are buying SUVs more than sedans. Ford stop selling sedans in the *US* for the same reason.

I had a 2021 ES350 this past week as a loaner vehicle for a few days while my 2016 GS350 F-Sport was being serviced at the dealer. I've been wanting to drive one for a while to compare it to the GS as it's a very nice car overall, but I still prefer my GS mainly since it's RWD. The ES rides better with softer seats, doesn't handle as well as my GS as I expected, but is much better than my grandma's 2012 ES350 while still having a similar cushy ride.

They've been doing it for 30 years. They evidently believe that luxury buyers value solidity and handling more than cargo versatility, so they've always given the Camry and Avalon folding rear seats while giving the ES a stiffening structural brace behind the rear seatback instead. One might agree or disagree with them, but at least they've been consistent. I suspect it's part of the price of coaxing a luxury level of body tightness out of family sedan bones, which has always been the secret of ES's price advantage over the Germans.

The ES350 and ES300h come with either an 8 inch screen without navigation, or the full size 12 inch screen with navigation. DO NOT buy the small 8 inch screen: it just does not have the richness of color or resolution of the 12 inch. I was very fortunate to purchase a hybrid, the ES300h, in North Carolina. They are hard to find and sell within days. Mine came with stunning 18 inch wheels, 12 inch screen, and the premium Mark Levinson sound system. The sound was superb listening to HD radio, but using bluetooth and Spotify on my cell phone, the sound on the highway was somehow just not that great I don't think. I need to experiment more with the sound settings, which has to be set for each sound source. I had not done so at first. All said and done, the 2022 ES300h is just an incredible car. The dealer gives zero discount, but he gave me a fair price for my trade-in. I've heard of some dealers charging thousands of dollars more than list price in fact. The car has excellent acceleration for a hybrid, and at steady speed, very quiet indeed. On the highway I could hardly hear the engine. Wind noise was negligible. Apple Car Play and Android Auto use USB cables and are NOT wireless. But the dynamic navigation system is so excellent I doubt I'll use the Android Auto feature. When you do connect your phone with a USB cable, the screen is limited to 8 inches.

Right about the Levinson. Like all truly accurate sound systems, it's as good or bad as the source material. Note that you have to set the audio settings individually for each input source. Many including me recommend shutting Surround off and the fader two steps toward the back. Enjoy!

I understand why they had to discontinue the GS as it was too similar in size to the ES and it fit right in between the IS and the flagship LS. They’re just trying to do too much with the ES and not doing any of it right. They’re trying to make it a sports sedan which it’s never been considering it’s based on the Camry. It’s not sporty enough, not luxurious enough, not powerful enough and it doesn’t have what buyers are interested in right now to make it a competitive choice. Give us a plug-in hybrid with AWD and the F-Sport package and you’ll see an increase in sales. They already have all the technology in the Toyota/Lexus arsenal.

      @tonysterbenc ปีที่แล้ว

@@idcnetwerk9265 Your simplistic "engineered better" shows a basic ignorance of the nature of engineering. Engineering is inherently a compromise of competing priorities. When a Porsche is built in such a convoluted way that you have to disassemble the fender to replace a clutch, it's not because it was designed by bad engineers; it's because performance was a higher priority than serviceability. Lexus is well known for making the opposite choice. I took your invitation to look it up and consulted the neutral 200,000-person Consumer Reports 2021 reliability survey, far more representative statistically than your p!ssed-off individuals making posts to complaint boards. Result, from April 2021, page 94 (I'd post it here except TH-cam won't let me): Lexus GS Electrical system reliability is Better Than Average for 2013, '14, and '15; and Much Better Than Average (the top grade) for '16, '17 and '18 (not enough responses to list for the highly similar '19 and '20).
