Why Jack Black Is One Of The Only Actors You Can't Replace

- School of Rock is one of those timeless movies that has appealed to both kids and adults ever since it's initial debut. A big reason for that is the star power behind the movie's lead Jack Black. Jack Black brings a unique energy and point of view to the character Dewey Finn, and to a point that it couldn't be replicated by any other actor. School of Rock didn't make Jack Black's career, but it will always be one of his most popular films.

What's your favorite Jack Black movie of all time?
he kind of killed it in kungfu panda
It's the Pick of Destiny for me
Pick of Destiny for sure.
I love almost every movie hes in. Jack brings out something in every scene that most other actors just cant. Also hes a super cool dude
Nacho Libre, and then Kung fu panda
His high kick to weight ratio. That's what makes Jack Black irreplaceable.
Nobody moves like Jack haha
That's why he's in the cool group
I honestly believe Tekken's Bob is partially based off him. The way he moves is very Jack Black, even if his story isn't.
I always figured it was because he's streets ahead.
It’s mesmerizing!
I honestly think people don’t realize how great of an actor Jack Black is when given the right material. Honestly, if you pay close enough attention to “Kung Fu Panda,” you can see his range of skills in how one minute he can say something that makes you bust a gut laughing and the next he can convey a truly depressing and heartfelt scene. He truly is an underrated gift to comedy-drama.
Have you seen Bernie? Arguably his best performance.
@@erakfishfishfish no I haven’t actually, but I’ve intended to. Although I might have to now that you’re recommending it. I have liked what I’ve seen from Richard Linklater so far, so I trust it’s probably pretty good. Been meaning to see more of his stuff.
Kung Fu Panda was heavily inspired by Nacho Libre, and he's showing the same qualities there. You're in stitches with laughter while wanting to hug and comfort Nacho at the same moment.
@@strangefruit42 I know I absolutely love that movie too. A really underrated one of you ask me.
@@strangefruit42Do you not realize that I have had diarrhea since Easters?
"It's definitely the movie I'm most proud of. That's the only time I felt like I was meant to do something. And honestly, I can die happy, I've got my School of Rock." - Jack Black for GQ, 2019
I was going to like this comment, but then I saw it was on '666' already, and I felt like that's something Jack Black would really appreciate.
It really is the role he was meant to play. I'm struggling to think of something else where the lines between actor and character blur so wonderfully. Maybe Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.
@@totakekeslider3835 hey friend, it’s passed that count now, you can like it now :)
@@jadeharley7190 done
@@jakek1735 I do think there are a handful of other cases like this.
Hell, just off the top of my head - Chris Evans as Captain America, RDJ as Tony Stark, Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow (Honestly many of the cast of the MCU and Pirates of the Caribbean feel pretty perfect in general. Could even mention some of the cast of the Harry Potter movies.
There are definitely some more cases where the actor and character became one so seamlessly. It's awesome to see.
And as you mentioned, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is honestly one of the most amazing casting choices in film. :D
To this day, one of my absolute FAVORITE movies! No telling just how many future teachers this film impacted and inspired. School of Rock is what made Jack Black a national treasure
Thanks for your comment. Agree with you!
I'm one of those teachers.
The word 'inspiring' is not enough to describe how ridiculously powerful this movie is.
Also, kinda weird that a comedy makes me cry that much :|
That's Jack Black's effect, I guess.
teacher here, Dewey's infectious praise then advice like with the "you rocked but tighten it up" drums, it's hard to strike that balance without sounding false, but it's worth trying and gets so many kids on your side and trying and enjoying trying. When he talks to the girl about her weight I always get a bit choked up, I see my students in her so much
I currently teach music lessons for part of my living. I can definitely vouch for that. Jack Black is one of the big reasons that I’m a music teacher
I can't speak for others but this movie came out when I was 3 and next year I'll be starting my Bachelor of Music so I can get my doctorate and become a professor of music and this movie was the reason I wanted a guitar so bad for my sixth birthday. I would not be who I am today if it weren't for this movie.
Agreed, Jack Black put his heart and soul into this film, making Dewey likable, in spite of his many flaws. Also, happy 20th Anniversary to School of Rock!
Happy 20th!
W pfp
20th??? That means that I was about 5 years old when that came out. Also, I like this movie so much because it ties back to my dad. I remember he showed this to me and my brother for the first time. Also, I always had this strange thought in mind that he learned to play the guitar BECAUSE of this movie. Not saying that he did that for the sake of the movie, but just that ever since I was a kid I always imagined his reasoning to play😅😁
W pfp, I was Gomez in a hs production
"Jack Black and Mike White" sounds like the main characters of an 90s sitcom about two total-opposite friends living together in New York City. I like that these people are actually real-life friends!
A buddy cop comedy would also work
Or the playable characters of an arcade beat 'em up like Final Fight.
The buddy cop movie has Jack Black as Mike White and Mike White as Jack Black
Like mr black and me white from johnny test
I was literally thinking this. About to comment it to.
@spooder1568 I can hear the announcer now, "Black and White... opposites that attract"!
I met Jack Black on a road trip to riot fest last year. He was wandering around the Rock and Roll history museum in Ohio by himself with a backpack. He played some music with some fans in the basement. We ended up leaving at the same time and he took a picture with my friend. Great dude
Did he end up stealing a guitar pick while he was there?
Maybe, I lost track of him for bit
Whenever I have thoughts like "Oh this celebrity seems like they'd be fun to hang out with" it always feels kinda weird and parasocial, but Jack Black really does seem like IRL he's almost exactly like the character of Dewey and would be super great to hang out with if you're also a huge fan of classic rock or just a music-lover in general.
@@jakek1735 It's the other way around for me, same conclusion, tho. Most celebs I get the feel that meeting them for real would be awful. Vain, nothing to talk about, feeling above it all etc.
But meeting Jack Black I can imagine as him just being a normal dude. Very few actors I would ascribe that to. Maybe Dafoe, too.
@@dowfreak7 Speaking of Dafoe, can we just keep appreciating his performance as Green Goblin? Man was genuinely terrifying, and it was amazing.
School of Rock worked because half the scenes were real. When it comes to teaching and jamming with the kids, you simply cannot fake the level of enthusiasm Jack had for the music and the abilities of those that were playing it. In those moments where Jack is giving each kid some instruction or the moments where he's absolutely floored by their talent there is almost no line between actor and character at all... he simply is acting upon his genuine emotions and feelings in the scene, and even the best actors in our collective human history aren't able to perfectly replicate that feeling.
Nothing is more authentic than the real deal.
The reason you can't replace Jack Black is because he is one of the very few famous actors that are genuinely a good person.
Im a month late on replying, but in the reunion everybody seemed to be so happy to finally be back in the band one last time. I fucking love Jack Black.
Fr, with so how often you hear of a famous person being an awful or evil human I’ve just started to not get surprised any more. But Jack Black is one of the only famous people who I can always look at and feels he actually is a good person
@@laughingkidd815 yeah. Another one that generally comes to mind as a genuinely good person is Keanu Reeves.
Everything I hear about Jack Black is nothing but positivity. It's so so refreshing to see that happen due to how rare famous actors being genuinely good people is
@@fnors2 Jack Black, Keanu Reeves, Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Robin Williams, and Tom Hanks are probably the most notable examples of actors who are genuinely good people
School of Rock still has a special place in the hearts of Chicagoans especially. Some of the actors were from Chicago and I’ve had the privilege of meeting Kevin Clark (Freddy) and Rivkah Reyes (Katie) through everyday life encounters years back. This film will forever be a fond part of my childhood. RIP Kevin Clark
Because of the this movie they opened up a school of rock in nj, literally the name of the school
@@Silverlobo1992 Same in Chicago haha, it’s pretty small but cool
musho betis!!! a ganar al united!!
Freddy’s jam sessions in Highwood were so legendary. I only got a chance to swing by and play there after his passing. He really grew a scene there.
yeah there’s one over in Barrington and another in the commercial section of Schaumburg
Jack isn’t just one of the greatest celebs of all time, but also one of the greatest human beings to ever exist.🙏
Wholeheartedly agree!
No he's not.
@@bigb0ss282 Would you like to share your opinion to the whole class?
He’s not the greatest celebrity in the world. He’s just a tribute.
@@mr.a1827 he's not perfect and people idolize too much. He's hypocritical just like every other human. He lies, makes mistakes, says dumb sheet as much as most of us here. It's just a human acting. Good at misleading weak-minded people.
Whenever School of Rock plays their song at the end it still sends shivers down my spine to this day. Soooo good.
SAME!
So if ya wanna be the teacher's pettttttt
I saw Tenacious D live for the first time a few months back. It’s a wild performance where, just for a while, negativity does not and can not exist. It’s like being in the presence of a lightbulb that radiates nothing but positive energy for everyone in the audience.
This is perfectly put. I've been so lucky to meet Jack and Kyle a few years back. Showing Jack my Nacho Libre tattoo, and to both my pretty big Tenacious D tattoo. Kyle asked why I'd love them so much that I'd get such a big tattoo of them. I usually reply to this question that you can't explain The D, you have to experience them. Towards Kage who can't experience it from the outside, I struggled to put it in words. I wish, I would have found the words you found.
This movie was one of my kids comfort movies. At one point in his toddler years, he tried to watch three times in a row (I stopped him at the third attempt). He ended up wearing out two DVDs from how much it was used that we now own our third copy.
Charisma.. one word. Only greats posses it.
Robin Williams is also another. Never a bad film.
Robin Williams, Jack Black, Pedro Pascal. They're all larger than life on camera and fill the cracks created by characters who were designed to feel realistic with genuine cracks in their facade. You can't script, write, or set that level of charisma. You just hire them to lead the film and know it will work.
I was 10 years old when I first watched this movie (about the same age as the kids in the movie). Jack Black and this movie legit changed my life. All these years later, now I'm a musician and still love this movie so much!
Same here. This movie had such a massive impact on not only my taste in music, but inspired me to want to pick up an instrument.
Same lml
One of the best casting decisions in modern film history. Its the role he was born to play.
It was written for him, wouldn't have been made without him. No casting involved
School of Rock was a movie that released at the perfect time in my adolescence. It is Jack Black's best performance, in my opinion. It's a beautifully written, directed, and acted film from everyone involved. "Lawrence is good at piano! He shall be rocking in my show!"
I recently watched School of Rock with my young kids, we all loved it. Its now a 20 year old movie with music thats twice as old as that and it still hits all the right notes.
This movie is so good you never get bored it deserves an oscar
Give it all the Oscars
It is not just School of Rock where he shines. He was brilliant in the Jumanji remake, he played a great role in Jacksons King Kong and the voice acting for Kung Fu Panda was incredible.
There’s a whole lot of celebs you just can’t replace, and Jack is one of em.🙏
Pssst. I lost my.... jelly beans
Jack Black looks at the movie he's in with his lines as though it's his life for the time being. Not just another movie, but another life. Every single movie he's been in has just been another story of his life to tell and it's beautiful.
You CANNOT deny the beauty that is Jack's Po. He owns that role and puts a genuine passion into the performance.
I still think he did some of his best hilarious underrated work in really fun underrated flicks like "Saving Silverman", "Orange County" & "High fidelity"
So funny in Orange County
He’s amazing in Bernie too
“Look at me I didn’t go to college and I’m kick ass.” Loved Jack Black in Orange County.
Saving Silverman is so funny
Saving Silverman is great.
I’ve had the unique pleasure of working with Black once and he is is a genuinely kind soul that can jump into that wild rocker persona on command. In person he’s pretty chill and relaxed but the second you say action *snap* off he goes! It’s amazing to watch live!
May I ask, on which project you worked with Jack?
I’m loving this you can’t replace series, I would love to see you cover nick cage, who I think is infinitely mimic-able but totally irreplaceable
Another actor who I think matches this formula is Harrison Ford who some people come really close to matching but again and again just fall a little flat. He’s much more subtle than the more comedic actors you’ve shown so I’d love to see what makes him so unique
I feel every word you said about Jables. I've met him in 2019, after a Tenacious D concert, and the stage hog had become the kindest and most lovable human imaginable. When he talked to me, it felt like he was the lucky person to have the chance to meet me, and not the other way round. This man has an absolutely special gift, and rarely have I ever felt this comfortable with someone. I'm positive that he did the same with the kids and probably most people he's in touch with.
School of rock literally changed my life and molded my taste in music at 10 years old
Nice, that sounds like an interesting story.
Jack Black has said (in his GQ iconic roles interview) that School of Rock is his favorite film that he's done. Definitely recommend watching that interview too if you haven't.
Jack Black is always fantastic, and School of Rock is a classic.
I don't think there's anyone who doesn't like School of Rock
He’s just so purely himself, he’s genuinely this massive goofball of a person and it’s so amazing
Jack Black is one of those rare actors who has remained (seemingly) genuine throughout his career. While that sense of honest self-expression makes his range as an actor more limited, it also ensures the audience connects with whatever character he plays.
One of my favourite movies growing up ..and still is
Jack Black is best utilized by playing the role "Jack Black".
That is what makes him so likable to begin with.
Jack Black is definitely underrated as a physical comedian and actor. There is a charm that elevates his performance with the right material, such as School of Rock. But for me, nothing will ever top the music video for Tenacious D's 'Tribute'. I must've watched that video hundreds of times when it came out. That whole album is such gold.
jack black in th school of rock is just the most ridiculous thing ever and i love it
Agree!
I wonder if Jack Black’s experience as a child actor gave him a perspective not always present when dealing with child actors as an adult. Like he’s able to relate to them in an authentic way that other actors can’t easily replicate.
Ahh, School of Rock. Forever one of my most cherished movies. I proposed to my wife while we watched this on a park bench some 19-ish years ago. Jack Black is amazing in it (and the broadway musical is also phenomenal)
This movie is legit perfect casting of Jack black made me proud to be a drummer as a kid
I don't know did, there's this one Asian dude on a google pixel ad and he gives me some SERIOUS jack black vibes. Also Adam Devine gives strong Jack Black vibes. He might never be replaced but those people could totally help fill the gap.
School of Rock is an incredible film. And I agree, Jack is truly one of a kind. Just thinking about him I find endearing. He's not just amazingly funny, he's a cracking actor all round.
This movie is right at the very top of my list of favorites. A buddy of mine and I spent an entire winter watching this flick while we were snowed in. At one point, we'd had it on repeat for a solid 24 hour period. To this day, some 15 years or so later, he and I can both perform this movie line for line.
I think the world just needs more movies about rock and roll
Dude, I heard your awe for Jack through my headphones. Great video - nailed it
Jack Black inspires me to keep surviving with his infectious positivity.
Fantastic! I love the empathy and support he shows, not only a model for teaching, but being a proper role model in general
He plays himself in every movie he's made. Of course you couldn't replace that
I love that you gave a shout out to his appearance on Mr. Show
Mr. Show was the best!
This is still one of the best films. When it came out, I was like the same age as the kids in the movie (5th grade, maybe?) and it planeted the seed in my head that I wanted to be a rocker. Loved the charm and the collaboration and unbeatably good spirit of the film. Could've easily come across as mean-spirited or crass, but it was instead a super feelgood movie.
I don't think that there's anybody on TH-cam that does such a spot on analysis of a film like you do sir. 👏👏👏
Jack Black has in recent years become one of my faves. It clicked for me when I saw the super Mario movie trailer and his voice acting as Bowser...it officially sold me on his skill and talent. Like it was a scary good performance 👏 👌🏿
Jack is and will always be my favorite actor. His story is as awesome as he is. A genuine and humble dude who just wants to spread love and rock. A true role model for all people!
Jim Carrey and Jack Black are two irreplaceable actors.
I believe this movie’s poster says it best, “Accept No Substitutes”.
This is unreal! this video came out just right after I watched this movie for the first time today. Loved it. Its the most fun I've had watching a movie in a long time.
This man was also really hilarious in Tropic thunder and really great in Bernie
This channel is amazing. It's my favorite and it's not even close
YES! My favorite actor growing up, give the man his flowers. His brand of manic insanity may not have aged well, but School of Rock did.
I watched Jack Black when I was 5. It is now my favourite film of all time ?
What an awesome movie!! Loved your analysis, never realized that for the better half of the movie he's the villain, taking advantage of those kids, jack black is a genious!! I remembered thinking those kids aren't fake playing, you just confirmed my suspicion. The en credits with the kids and Jack just improvising was pure gold! I also watched a video somewhere of the cast and Jack getting together and playing again somewhere, a true nostalgia bomb!! Love your videos man!! 👍👏👏👏👏👏
This in my opinion is a top contender for the "perfect movie".
Ah what a great video!! School of Rock is an incredibly nostalgic movie for me because my family watched it a lot when I was growing up & you really put to words things that I totally agree with, but never thought about quite that way before. Dewey Finn has the potential to be pretty creepy & awful considering that the plot is him manipulating a bunch of elementary school kids to hopefully help win him money, but Jack Black brings such heart & sincerity in the way that he grows to care & inspire the kids that it’s such a feel good movie instead. Even though Dewey’s lie is what puts him in position for the rest of the movie, his genuine love of music & art is what the audience is left remembering.
Don't know if anyone has said this is the comments, but I loved him in 'The Holiday'. It's amazing how versatile he is from school of rock to a rom com 😂
Great video! I'd like to point out, this movie is a spiritual successor to the play and movie "the music man." But the fun part about School of rock is, this con man is an actually talented music teacher, and doesn't know it.
Yes, well thats the point, its like the underground talent

the old.. wow this guys a mess, if he just did this earlier he would be a badass teacher/road racer/gangster driver out of towner/tournament winner.. we wouldn't have a movie but
Here's to Jack Black... the man who was clearly inspired by MeatLoaf! Bridging the gap between film and music so effortlessly just seemed right for his career.
Sure, Black got his big screen debut in DEMOLITION MAN ( yup, he's actually one of the rebels standing next to Dennis Leary. ) Yet, in time, his prowess for making you laugh AND cry would definitely shine through once he got to star in SCHOOL OF ROCK.
Oh, for all you Jack Black fans, don't forget about TENACIOUS D AND THE PICK OF DESTINY. Love that movie!
He gave us School of Rock and Nacho Libre, he'd have my undying love just from that, the fact that he's an awesome sweetheart is the cherry on top.
This movie was the reason why I got into Rock music and I remember preforming Zach’s song for my elementary school talent show 🤘🏽😅
That's awesome!
What an astonishingly heartfelt love letter
My fav movie as a kid, surprised anyone still talk about ir
This was so incredibly fun to watch! Love that y’all are doing it again!
I'm not big on cheesy romance movies, but The Holiday is by far my favorite one because Jack Black is so freaking charming in it! More charming than freaking Jude Law!
I don't think I've ever seen a thing of/with Jack Black that I didn't like and I think it's because he always puts his all in everything he does :)
It feels like Jack puts his all self into everything he does
school of rock is my favorite movie of all time!
🤘
Damn you really nailed that description. He’s a rare ‘natural talent’
Rain Wilson tried to create a similar character in The Rocker, but the writing, the plot, and the resulting performance was no where near Jack Black's School of Rock!
He’s genuinely a great entertainer all around. His range is solid and his physical acting is on point.
Actually Alex brightman in the Broadway adaptation did a really good job
of all the actors working today, I can't think of a single one that just drips "grown-up kid energy" like Jack does, and I mean that as a compliment
Well damn, this didn't age well
The first time I heard Jack Black was in Kung Fu Panda, and the first time I saw him was in School of Rock.
Is he irreplaceable because you need a click bait title?
Watch the video and find out why he's irreplaceable.
@@Nerdstalgic click bait reply to match :)
Just figured it would answer your initial question if you watched the video :)
You’re telling me Jack Black’s neighbor was Mike White and I’m just now learning this?!?!?!
This aged poorly.
I still ike Jack Black regardless of whatever conflict he's been roped into. He's still a great actor who's played multple great roles over the years. There aren't many actors who can do so well on charisma and grandiose performance. Who else could play Po, Dewey Finn, or the Mario movie's Bowser with the same level of energy? I'll be extremely uspet if people just begin hating on him for the rest of time rather than praising his career.
I'll be honest, it's not movies or TV that introduced me to Jack Black, but a certain video game by the name of Brutal Legend.
I can't believe it's been nearly 20 years since I saw this in the cinema. An absolute comedy classic.
The Pick of Destiny is one of his funniest performances me for ... and it's also underrated like some of this earlier work.
School of Rock is such an underrated gem, like damn…
“Annie got an essay portion”
Jack Black's turn in Weird Al's video for "Tacky" is another one of those "well literally no one else could've pulled that off" moments.
Your videos speak to my whole life thus far ❤
I love this movie both as a kid and now as an adult and I think that it’s because it doesn’t pander or condescend to kids the way so many films geared toward children do. It doesn’t feel like a group of executives used a focus group to put together some half assed and dumbed down production of what they think kids like. I love how the movie introduced so many kids, like myself, to iconic rock bands and how the movie is about accepting who you are and not letting other people keep you down but doing so in a way that never feels heavy handed or preachy.
I remember School Of Rock was one of my favorite movies as a kid, this video makes me want to give it a watch again!
‘School of Rock’ is one of my favorite films, I even have the song on my phone.
Also “Riding a dragon over a river of blood with a guitar-Axe hybrid”

You should play ‘Brutal Legend’.
Man he’s easily my favourite actor of all time. Childhood hero. Adulthood hero. Legend
He ain't the only legendary actor that studios cannot replace, remember Jim Carrey and Robin Williams(R.I.P).
Not to mention the Voice actors like Mel Blanc(R.I.P) and Mako(R.I.P).
Some people are best suited for some roles and they play those roles so phenomenally that they are remembered for many years to come, even after they have long since passed.
He can never be replaced. He can only reprise his roles
this is SUCH a formative film for me as a musician and actor, jack black is a legend for real. he can make me cry and laugh in one scene lol!
My family and I always quote School of Rock. Also, I can’t believe the movie will turn 20 this year.
To this day I feel like Jack Black would have made an amazing Genie for the live-action Aladin remake.
