Just imagine your first 3 movies becoming mega-hits and all in the same year. You’d figure that would be your peak, but Jim Carrey never stopped. Even in his last movie before retiring, he still gave it his all
The Man is like a living cartoon character, only limited by the laws of physics. Anyone agrees? Because if I'm completely honest, that makes him, one of a kind!
Eternal Sunshine is in my Top 5 favorite movies. Jim and Kate's performance as one of the most engrossing and believable movie couples left such a huge impact on me.
I was a little bummed that this movie didn't get brought up, because it's amazing. But the fact of the matter is that role could have been played by a ton of other actors. It didn't require any uniquely Jim Carrey traits. That being said, it was great to watch a guy known primarily for comedy hit a role like that out of the park. But it doesn't serve as a testament to him being irreplaceable, so in the end I understand why they left it out.

I like how Jim Carrey is this erratic and wild comedic actor in his movies, but during his interviews, he seems like the most chill guy you would ever meet
It’s like the chicken and the egg question. Is Jim Carrey naturally a chill person but him being wild and erratic an act? Or is he naturally wild and erratic and he puts on an act of him being chill so it’s easier to relate and talk to him?
Jim Carrey was one force that saved Sonic from near failure, but also let's not forget the folks behind the curtain: the animation and effects artists redoing the entire style after poor initial reception. Jim Carrey was always a hero to me as a kid. He plays crazy really well.
@@ghost_5519 You underestimate how stubborn directors/investors/etc can be on picking a design that just doesn't work... until they get scared that it's actually going to cost them money, thennnn they'll start listening to the people who actually are passionate about the property, haha
Jim Carrey in Sonic is peak 90s Carrey and elevates an already-good family movie. His importance is so obvious that here, in Latin America, he is still voiced by Mario Castañeda, the legendary voice actor who's dubbed every Jim Carrey film (to my knowledge) since the 90s.
Same goes for the German dub. Same guy since the 90s and very iconic voice. I stopped watching movies dubbed many years ago, but I just checked it, it's still him.
So true, Mario was MADE to play Jim Carrey, its like he gets the actor he adapts his mannerisms perfectly. Also YES his Dr Robotnik is PERFECT, it really feels like you're watching The Mask or the Grinch again, his Energy, his presence, its like he never aged
Actually i disagree cause when the whole sonic design debacle was going on I was saying by the content we had seen the script needed a rewrite more then sonic needing a redesign cause making sonic an alien still doesn’t work for me
An aspect you didnt mention, is the fact that when he first hit the scene, everyone mocked him for being a terrible actor. Saying he only did faces, and talk with his butt, but now we're sitting here watching a youtube video on how he's irreplaceable. I hope the critics in the 90's understand how wrong they were.
To be fair, those movies were mostly him doing faces and talking with his butt. It's just that it didn't matter, he was hilarious. And turns out he is a great actor too as later films showed he could do more than make us laugh with outrageous over the top antics. His roll in Cable Guy was funny, creepy, and at times genuinely scary, Eternal Sunshine showed he could do drama, and on and on the list goes. Great actor, once in a lifetime comedic performer.
I am french and i really don't understand why all of a sudden, "underrated" is everywhere. No he's not underrated, that's the whole point made by that video.
"Films needed HIM, more than he needed films." Perfect way to describe the charm and success of the new Sonic movie! Story and script are neither great nor bad, just the typical kids friendly flick but it's Jim Carrey who holds everything together like a glue and brings everything to few levels above just by his great performance and energy.
nah im sorry but i disagree. i think any sonic fan can attest that even though carrey is great, there's so much that's great about Sonic 2 if you're a fan of the series, and how it treats Knuckles and Sonic's character progression. Sonic 1 needed Carrey, Sonic 2 showed that they can go forward without him and make a solid videogame adaptation.
Ace Ventura, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, The Truman Show, Me, Myself & Irine and Man on the Moon are probably some of the movies I've seen most times in my life - they are so damn good and rewatchable!
I was 10 years old when the first Ace came out. It's hard to relate to anyone who wasn't a kid just how BIG of a star Jim Carrey was for the next few years. For all the millennial kids around that time, all those hits....Ace, Mask, Dumb & Dumber, In Living Color were all a cornerstones of our pop culture. Every kid could quote at least 10 lines and had worn out the VHS tapes watching them on repeat. Thanks for the memories Jim.
True. I also grew up watching Jim Carrey movies along with Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and Rob Schiender (not sure of the spelling of his last name) movies. As far as I can remember, Eddie Murphy and Jim Carrey were the big names when it comes to big blockbuster comedy movies but Eddie during that time was on his way out after already achieving so much success in prior decades, making it Jim's era.
I grew up during the era where Jim Carrey was the king of comedy movies. I can't explain in words how beautiful it was gathering with my family on a Friday or Saturday night to watch a Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Jack Black and other family-friendly comedy movies. Every time I see a clip from those movies, it always puts a smile on my face.
Jim Carrey and Robin Williams are probably the 2 most iconic and irreplaceable actors in recent memory. I don't think anyone can match what they bring/brought to the table as performers
@@KaylahDemiI would say jack black's style of acting was largely inspired from jim and rob since he also embodies what they do, just with a little less frenetic energy. But honestly who could even match jim Carrey and robbin Williams, I'd say jack got real close
I agree. Jim Carrey is irreplaceable. Growing up, my 3 major comedy icons were Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, and Adam Sandler. Unfortunately, Williams is no longer with us, and I just don't think Sandler really brings as much to the table as he did in the 90's, but I think Carrey is still pretty much on his A game. From what I understand, after Sonic 2, he has gone on hiatus and may or may not return to acting. We can all appreciate everything he has brought us up to that point, though!
Sandler never brought anything to the table he was only decent in his first acting job that he would probably not like brought up cause of it being attached to bill Cosby cause of playing one of Theo’s friends Sandler never evolved his comedy he still makes the same type of toilet humor movies he was making when he made Billy Madison not even Netflix stepping in giving him a place to continue making movies could save his career cause like most of his movies most the Netflix movies also tanked people are free to still like him through
@@kevin10001 To be fair, there are a very large amount of people who really appreciate his 90's work. He's even done some funny stuff since then, but it just doesn't hit the same. I will say the movie Jack and Jill that he did, I can't even finish. That one was a disgrace... But beyond that, have you seen Uncut Gems from 2019? Adam Sandler tackled a serious role in that one and COMPLETELY nailed it!

He's a legend and deserves a legacy award for his contribution to Comedy. No other actor has been able to come close to him. The Mask will forever be my favourite movie from the 90's.
Jim Carrey’s role as Truman Burbank is definitely my favorite. The Truman Show is one of my favorite movies to date! And the runner-up would have to be him playing Stanley Ipkiss in The Mask.
I'll be honest. If the 80s was Bill Murray's and Eddie Murphy's decade, then the 90s was Jim's. The man made 3 iconic comedies in one year, starred in a sketch show that impacted the culture, and challenged his own image with films that pushed him into darker or more serious strides. Truly a talent that is once in a lifetime.
Jim Carrey is the best comedy actor i have ever seen, he is just so naturally funny, he doesn't even need a script or anything, he is just a really funny person
Do you know him in real life? otherwise what you see on interviews and the media, it's just a show, a masquerade. only the people his real life know what he is really like. - the same goes for every "celebrity"
Was looking for this! My favorite Christmas movie of all time. And it proves his point bc the cartoon in 2018 that came afterwards didn’t come close to Jim’s and it was for sure more family friendly even the way they made him look.
He's brings such a unique personality to the table that even if someone tried to "replace" him, they'd only get called out for trying to copy him. There truly never will be another Jim Carrey
Aside from "Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind" - which is my favorite performance & film of Jim Carrey - I also think "The Truman Show" is a career highlight. He exhibited comedy and vulnerability so beautifully in that film in a way that it made him stand out from his comedy peers. Still one of those films that makes me glad to have grown up in the 90s.
I actually think those are his two best films (Eternal Sunshine and The Truman Show), which I know sounds crazy since he's one of the best comedic actors of all time, but I think this just shows how incredible his range is and what an underrated dramatic actor he is.
It's always really bummed me out that he had a bad experience making Ace Ventura 2, because it's one of my absolute all time favorite movies. So iconic and Quotable
The mindset in the movie/TV industry is that everyone is replaceable/expendable, when you have that mindset your setting yourself up for failure, behind the camera or in front of the camera, everyone brings their own unique talent, and that's something you just can't replicate especially with Jim Carrey's humor and wit, he's one of a kind and that's why his characters and movies were so successful.
@@jrich5795 Yes definitely, I wish that wasn't the case in life and in the movie/T.V industry, because it takes away what make that individual person special or unique.
Sometimes it's true, that the people are replaceable. Take MCU for example. No one can disagree that the movies were a huge hit, and still if you replaced most of the main cast, the movies would be exactly the same.
@@solumlupus9018 But that kind of takes away what makes someone special or unique, yes they could of re-cast that movie but would of another actor/actress give that character that unique characteristic that maybe that particular actor/actress came up with, maybe not.
He's not only a special kinda crazy he owns it and controls it. He's actually nutszo but decent about it. He reflects and builds off the chasing chaos. His art alone isn't that much perfect but worthy of interest. He's an artist. One I love and emulate. He's one that won't be put down.
Jim Carrey cannot be replicated. He has been through much in his life. Truly creative people cannot be manipulated, nor do they like the BS they see in around them. He is one of my favorite people, and that’s saying a lot. I could care less about actors, their lives and Hollowood. I have my own life.
This video perfectly shows why Jim Carrey needs to return for Sonic 3. His role as Eggman is a big reason why people love the movies, and if they're going to adapt Shadow's story then Jim Carrey's Eggman is going to need to come back.
Jim is a man unto himself. One of a kind. Brilliant. Amazing and oh so talented. No one can replace jim. The mold was broken the day he was born. I adore him and always will. I will miss seeing him on the big screen, now that he's retired, but boy has he well deserved his serbaticle. I still adore him and he will always have a place in my heart. Thank you jim for giving us your amazing talent.
This man is an absolute legend. Theres has never been and there will never be another jim carrey. His stardom his glow and his unique personality will forever be missed in Hollywood
Well, during this era where characters are undervalued, a star is a able to inject a certain amount of their own self into their parts. It's the opposite of an actor who vanishes into their role. You know who's doing it, and that lends the role some charm. I think of Meryl Streep in "The Iron Lady," for instance, who was able to humanize a definitely polarizing historical figure, and all of that was attributable to Streep's performance.
Jim Carrey is an absolute master at his craft and quite literally did things no one else could. The physicality injected into his characters is unbelievable. I was watching an awards show a few years ago (Oscar’s maybe) with a friend and Jim came on to present an award. My friend and I started laughing before he even said a word. The way he caries himself, his timing, and unique ability to tell a joke without saying a word is amazing to me. It’s like his mere presence was enough to get a laugh out of us.
When I was a kid, I remember seeing his stand up on tv, as well as his performances on 'in living color', and remember ace Ventura coming to theatres. I've seen everything he's been in, honestly. He's a one of a kind and we will never see his like again.
I'm certainly glad they got him to do Ace 2. Even though it almost killed me from lack of oxygene the first time i saw it, the scene with the rhino is one of the funniest I've ever seen.
Jim Carrey is literally one of my childhood heroes and is the reason why I even thought of being a filmmaker and trying to entertain people. He and Robin Williams are two guys that are examples of once in a lifetime talents that are simple irreplaceable, which is why films such as the Aladdin remake and The Mask sequel failed: they were missing the magic that talents such as those legends provided to the equation.
I love seeing how many people are bringing up Robin Williams. He and Jim Carrey are once in a lifetime talents that helped define comedy in 90s films. Neither of them can be replicated and any attempts to do so are often pitiful at best.
My brother wants to be an actor and he said that it was Jim Carrey and Johnny Depp that were his main inspiration for taking an interest in acting. I guess he chose well.
If your brother becomes an actor/comedian if he adopts the personality of Carrey and Depp on the big screen and TV shows he'll literally be an live action Lupin the 3rd/III
I honestly think it’s a cardinal sin that Jim Carrey hasn’t at the very least been nominated for an Oscar. Not only does he absolutely shine in his best comedic roles, but he’s proven with films like The Truman Show that he can put on a stunning dramatic performance as well. Even The Weeknd had him narrate his most recent album and it worked out so well. I don’t think I’ll ever understand the criteria that runs through the Academy voters’ minds…
@@GownoPrawdaTV1 yes, those were his 3 most successful dramatic movies. He did other serious movies like the Majestic and Number 23, but those were flops unfortunately
Basically, Jim can act in very unnatural way, and appear quite natural while doing so. Because of it, he is perfect in playing characters that don't exactly "belong" in a movie's world. He can play cartoonish characters in live action, or silly character in otherwise serious setting. Replace him with someone else and you have some jerk doing faces for no reason.
Him and probably Robin Williams were a large part of my comedy childhood. I don’t think you can replace Robin Williams as the genie in Aladdin either, not even with someone like Will Smith. Williams was another living cartoon character in his own way.
To me Jim Carrey & Robin Williams both had that raw chaotic energy that paired both physical and verbal comedy perfectly. They were able to express so much from their face/body, which paired perfectly with their penchant for accents/impressions, and impeccable timing & delivery. All these talents and skills allowed both Williams & Carrey to tap into a sort of genuine universal type of comedy where both kids and grandparents could laugh and enjoy themselves.
Dumb & Dumber and The Mask are films I have watched since I was a little kid and I still deeply love both of those movies. I haven't seen a new film of his in many years. He was also great in more dramatic films like "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" and "The Truman Show".
He was such a dominant presence in so many of the movies I watched as a kid. He just has this energy you didn't find in other actors. I don't know if there's a word for it, but whatever he had, he had it in spades 😊
This is a reminder why Jim Carrey is my favorite movie actor of all time! Because it's like every role he has played is irreplaceable that no other actor could play those characters like Ace Ventura or The Mask better than Jim Carrey can. Including for an actor who was skeptical on sequels, At least he has his reasonable conditions to return on some certain ones like Sonic 2 for him to feel genuine on reprising a role on screen. But all of those Carrey less sequels just proves that those films cannot replicate or have that same magic without Jim Carrey himself. So I'm very happy that this video has existed to let both old and new Jim Carrey fans to notice. And in the words of Ace Ventura: " Spank you very much!"😎🤙
@@moodlethenoodle I guess it's my unrealistic expectation that commentors have something to add, rather than have me read lots of sentences only to discover there isn't any substance. My bad I suck
I remember trying to log into an old account I had from when I was 9. One of the security questions was "Who is your favorite actor?" I had no idea what 9 year old me put so I just put who my favorite current actor is: Jim Carrey. I managed to recover the account. His humor has never grown stale and honestly I'm not sure his over the top humor will ever be replicated. He is 100% one of the most unique actors of all time.
Robin Williams is an actor who cannot be replaced. I love Jim Carrey's comedy, he's unique and awesome in his own right, definitely one of the greats. Yet when it comes to comedy and one who will forever impact comedy, television and the viewing audience, Robin Williams is the one that cannot be replaced for me.
You can replace him though. Aladin’s remake made 1 billion dollars without him. Whereas with him the movie made half that at 502 mil in 1992. The movie made more when Robin Williams was replaced. However if you adjust for inflation they made the almost the same amount of money give or take a couple thousand. Jim Carrey’s first movie role before he was at the level of fame he is today (I’m giving Robin Williams the leg up) made 107.2 million dollars in 1994. Which is now worth 2,136,925.79 dollars today however Ace Ventura Jr. the sequel without Jim Carrey made 108,360,063 which is 284,986,965.69 dollars today. That is about an 1/8 of profit without Jim Carrey at the start of his career vs an equal profit without Robin Williams after being well established. Robin Williams can literally be replaced with Will Smith whereas not even Jim Carrey can replace Jim Carrey. You’re entitled to favor Robin Williams however you are incorrect in saying that he is irreplaceable. Also I wasn’t gonna reply to this but I wanted to see if you were anywhere close to correct, and after I figured out the 2009 inflation rates I figured I might as well share this information.

Dumb and dumber could have been another actor and still be a great film, ace ventura I think is a lock down for Carrey. Yet I do not believe anyone could replace Williams in any of his acting roles (voice acting a cartoon character is a different thing entirely, anyone could play a cartoon character, take Haley Cocao for example who voiced Harley Quinn, she would not have been a good actress for Harley Quinn in suicide squad).
I was recently on vacation and my hotel had an HBO movies channel and they showed Liar Liar. Carey’s mannerisms were so well done, they add to his acting chops, which are also fantastic. Hopefully he got well compensated for his talents and can live comfortably while also doing roles that he believes are worth his time.

Oscars and other awards aren’t really important at all. They’re not actually awarded to the “best” it’s literally just people voting for their friends. Actors vote for actors, directors for directors, writes for writers and so on. It’s cool to be ”awarded” one but if you don’t want to nominate yourself you’re not any lesser for it.

I watched “In Living Color” just like a lot of adolescents in the 90s and it was incredibly influential on me and my friends. I could do Jim Carrey characters like “Fire Marshall Bill” and “Grandpa Jack” on command. And when he went to movies I saw everyone in theaters. The dudes owned the 90s. He truly is one of kind. A dynamo of comedy.
Jim is an absolute treasure of a performer/comedian/actor and a one of a kind human being. I'm very lucky that I grew up watching his movies as a kid in the 90's, he pretty much introduced comedy into my life. He is the GOAT.
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind is one of my favorite movies, I really wish I got to see Carrey in more romance/drama movies. The emotions of heartbreak and acceptance he was able to portray was unbelievable. I think the fact that he’s known for comedy added to it as well, here’s this funny and optimistic guy who’s in a failing relationship and just cant seem to make it work, and is so riddled with grief that he cant take it anymore. It’s a great dichotomy that I wish was explored more. But I’ve heard that dramatic roles were hard on him so I’m not too upset he didn’t do more.
Maybe Heather Shaw can coax him out! I would love to see a father daughter comedy with them!! I just think of that mediocre Kristen bell cruise movie....would have been a million times better with those two!
And now Jim Carrey has returned once again as Dr. Robotnik for the upcoming third installment of Sonic Movie 3. It's unbelievable this is first ever, and likely last, film trilogy in his career.

There is a scene in the 1st ace ventura where jim goes to a psychiatric ward where he does a crazed act in slow motion and reverse. I have never seen an actor do that b4. That was simply amazing!!!
I'm really surprised to hear about the problems JC went through while filming Ace Ventura 2, I think it's one of the few sequels that surpassed the original and one of my all time favourite films.

Jim Carrey only made the Grinch because of his daughter, he has said in interviews he played the roll for her and would have done it for free, so any critique of it didn't matter to him, as long as his daughter enjoyed it.
One of the all time best actors. Hands down. He’s known for his fun characters, but he does so well in serious roles as well- and it makes those short down to earth moments even in the comedy films feel so real.
Yes, like that terrible Steve Carell movie called “the Incredible Burt Wonderstone.” Carrey played the villain in that movie and he was the only good thing about it
I absolutely loved his performance in Sonic 2. It was sooooooo good. I think the reason it was so good was because he played it as though Dr Robotic's experiences in exile changed his personality so much he played him as almost a different character. In the first film he was methodical and daunting, but in the second film he was just a mad unhinged lunatic. Honestly, it was a pretty good joker portrayal.
Sonic was probably the best sequel of the few he made and even in that movie he's not playing the same character. Robotnik is no longer associated with the military and has flattened into a flat revenge-driven caricature of himself. His energy is lacking in that movie but he is still irreplaceable in them. I think he is one of the few people in the world that could replace or succeed Robin Williams either in one of his iconic roles or in a biopic.
I personally feel like in Sonic 2, Robotnik may not feel as much like Jim Carrey, but I think he feels more like Eggman. In Sonic 1, he just kinda felt like if Jim Carrey worked for the military and had drones. Only going after Sonic cause it’s his job, and he’s somewhat curious scientifically how Sonic works. In Sonic 2, him having an actual personal loathing for Sonic makes him more like Sonic’s foe, rather than just some guy who’s job is to hunt Sonic. As for the performance, it depends who you are. I feel like he’s playing more of a character in the 2nd one, rather than just playing himself. Some people will like that, some people may not.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought that he was a lot more entertaining in the first one. His fears that doing sequels turned him into a parody of himself makes a lot of sense considering the subtle change in performance. In the second movie I felt like I was just watching Jim Carrey, not Eggman. Still, I'm super happy that he decided to return for the second movie and I hope he returns for the next one as well. I don't know what they would do with the franchise otherwise.
@@GuyWithNoNickName it's almost like... In "Sonic" Dr. Robotnik has a life and a character, and surroundings, and actual place in the world. As any human character would. While in second he's more of an obsessive hedgehog-fan-mushroom-hater and that's the end of his character and his relationship with the world. I don't see how cardboard is more appealing than a character. Would be understandable if in games he had different, but well-rounded character. But instead, in games he's a man of 1½ gimmick.
Fun fact: Before Evan Almighty came to fruition, screenwriters Steve Koren and Mark O’Keefe envisioned a direct sequel to Bruce Almighty entitled Brucifer. The planned sequel involved Grace (Jennifer Anniston) dying and Bruce, under the weight of his grief, takes on Satan’s powers, which he uses to resurrect Grace.
What makes the Sonic movies so great is that not only are they love letters to the Sonic franchise, they’re also love letters to Jim Carrey’s chaotic nature as well.
The fact that Carrey is aware of the fact that they would not be able to recapture the success of Dumb & Dumber speaks to his intellect and self awareness. He is a truly a comedic genius

Jim Carrey was one force that saved Sonic from near failure, but also let's not forget the folks behind the curtain: the animation and effects artists redoing the entire style after poor initial reception. Jim Carrey was always a hero to me as a kid. He plays crazy really well.

What an interesting fact, thanks for sharing!
Same goes for the German dub. Same guy since the 90s and very iconic voice. I stopped watching movies dubbed many years ago, but I just checked it, it's still him.
@@Claoodeeoo2 he's also the voice of Goku in the latin american dub of Dragon Ball Z.

That is the just the mindset of life in general. Everybody is replaceable so you might as well have some fun before it happens

Jim is one of those rare actors that you can see hundreds of times and still see the character even though he has a very recognisable face and voice
Yes! 💯💯💯
@BenjaminGessel Johnny is perfect in everything.. I loved him in The Ninth Gate, From Hell, etc. You don't even know his body of work.
Yes, no other comedians can compare with the amazement of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey. The only other one that does is Eddie Murphy.
He's absolutely awesome. More people need to be like him. There should be more movies like his.

Every time Jim Carry is playing a character in any movie, the movie becomes his movie
Nah. Jim Carry portraying Robin Williams would just be weird!
@@GuyWithNoNickName that's so interesting, I felt the opposite.
He truly is one of the actors of all time.
Everyone of Jim's movies had greatness. He was the over the top star that made it work for him and the movies
His character in Kick Ass was dope! Lol! I needed more of that! Hardly could tell it was him! Lol….
It's funny how he always plays green characters.
I wish we could all forget the Sonic crap. He never would’ve done corny crap like in his prime

@@Terminal_Apotos why does it make you have a boner?
Blessed man, who has also blessed his fans with his service.
I’d just like to say,
Evan Almighty was the best sequel after a Jim Carrey role out of the bunch.
It was actually pretty good.
He is also very intelligent and balanced human being.
He is an Icon!
The fact that Carrey is aware of the fact that they would not be able to recapture the success of Dumb & Dumber speaks to his intellect and self awareness. He is a truly a comedic genius
Jim Carrey was at his peak the highest payed actor in Hollywood by far
The title should read "You can't replace a top A list actor with an unknown or first-time actor"
I haven’t said it before, but I’m going to say it now: this man is the funniest man alive!
