    It seems kind of trivial, but one of the things I miss about my pre-Covid life is the clothes. I do dress in presentable work-from-home things, but my symphony, theatre, ballet, church, dinner and a movie pretty clothes are languishing in my closet. But Im certainly not going to declutter them; we'll get to go out together again someday!

      Me too, Anony Mouse and Virginia M! I had pulled together what I felt was my best-ever seasonal capsule...navy, light blue, blush, sage, cool beige, light gray, and white. I had found 2 perfect blazers, a printed blouse with all my accent colors on a navy background, the cutest pair of blush pointed flats to wear on Fridays...and BOOM! Everything shut down in March and I've been working from home ever since. I still wear my cute tops, the button up shirts, and some of the nice trousers (even if no one can see them on camera) but my heels, the "office" handbags, the pencil skirts I adore, the gorgeous sheath dresses, the evening clutches...those are taunting me from the closet. I can't wait to be in the office again, and for the return of theater nights, after-hours cocktails, and dress-and-heels occasions! Trivial? Yes. But all of those things were an important expression of my personality and a form of self-care, so I can't help but feeling that my well-being has been affected by this long stretch in isolation. Coming from a proud introvert...the craving to be with people again is a feeling that I find very surprising, to say the least, but it's undeniable that we all have been negatively impacted in obvious and inconspicuous ways.

  • @KristaHarrisSB
    @KristaHarrisSB 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Such an excellent topic! I feel that this issue is what is often missing from discussions of capsule wardrobes... if you pare down too much, you wear out your clothes too quickly and drive yourself crazy doing laundry all the time. My rule of thumb is to have enough tops each season so that I don’t have to repeat for a week and I definitely believe in not wearing the same pair of shoes two days in a row. I think it’s not only good for your shoes, but also your feet.

    This is something I struggle with a lot in the fall/winter! I’ve always gravitated towards similar looks rather than desiring a different aesthetic every day. So a casual (non-work) fall outfit of a long sleeve shirt & vest or blanket scarf makes my heart sing. It’s worth it to me to have multiple vests & multiple scarves of various thickness to create similar, but different looks. I don’t struggle as much limiting core pieces as I do limiting “extras” 🙃 I also need to be honest with myself about how much I don’t need in my casual wardrobe as opposed to my work wardrobe. I don’t need as many jeans as black pants simply bc of my lifestyle.

    Thank you Audrey, your tips are always welcome and quite helpful. I‘m living in the North of Europe and have to manage different weather very often.
    So my closet has to cover from -10Celsius in winter up to 35plus in summer. This means a lot more logistics with garments. Therefore I found it useful to put aside in a box all the pieces I don‘t need during the actual season. And secondly in spring and autumn I do a lot of layering, so that there is something to take off when it becomes to warm during the day.
    Have a nice day! I appreciate your videos! Keep on and thanks a lot!

    This is an important video! I had started a journey to become a minimalist, but I figured somethings out in the process. Realistically it’s very energy and water are very expensive and my laundry bill would skyrocket. It became less efficient to have less clothes, so now I definitely try to build a wardrobe that gives me options. I’m doing a lot less laundry now which is helpful, but also I’m having more fun with my clothes. 😊

    This was so great. I read somewhere something about black dresses. I have struggled with the fact that I own several black dresses, in different cuts, styles, fabrics. The article said something along the lines of: if a black dress is what makes you feel your best and the most confident, suits your personal style and it is what you always gravitate towards (as opposed to a different colour or a pattern), then don't be afraid to own several so that you've got options for different occasions/purposes. So, I allow my self to own 2-3 formal black dresses, similar for casual and similar for the "in between." In the past, I have tried to venture out of my comfort zone into bright colours and usually that dress ends up back on the hanger and on goes the black dress. My runner up colour is navy blue - not a big leap there :)

    I love the idea of a capsule wardrobe, however my particular situation does not lend itself to a minimal amount of clothing. I have chronic health issues that will keep me of commission sometimes for months at a time. I live alone so there is no one to do laundry except me. So I have a larger number of items than some. But I have been brutally honest with myself about what I actually do wear on a regular basis. I no longer buy clothes for a life I don’t even have. Everything I kept after the thinning out process are items I like, look good on me, can be worn more than one way and are in good condition.
    Having said all that, I do enjoy your videos. I often pick up tips or ideas that help. So thanks, from Tennessee.

    OMG, thank you! I've watched a lot of those 10-piece capsule (or whatever really small number) videos and it's always "It's so versatile! If you can pair every single top with every single bottom you have like 200 outfits!" But when I tried that my very first discovery was that, especially in the summer, the number of outfits you have is actually limited by the number of tops you have, because sweat is a thing and laundry is necessary. But for some reason no one else has ever mentioned this eminently logical fact. So thank you.

    I found this wonderful white, button-down shirt in a thrift store, and it quickly became my go-to shirt for professional wear. I ended up tracking it down online and ordered two more of them so I could rotate them. So I have literally three of the exact same shirt in my closet! I find this works for me, since I usually layer the shirts under something because the shirt is never really the star of my outfit. It gives my look a consistency that I really like while allowing me to wear a fresh shirt when I need to.

  • @denisadellinger

    I just bought a new white tee yesterday. I do have several but they have stains and spots. I get so frustrated because my clothing especially tops get dark spots and yellow spots. I do not dry them because that would set them and really ruin the shirt. Sometimes I don't catch the spot and there goes a ruined top. But I do have duplicates of several things. Lots of styles of black pants for me is a great idea because I can have dress pants and jeans and workout wear which doubles for homewear. I do have a lot of styles of tees in a variety of colors. I can put a blazer over them and feel like I'm a little bit more dressed than usual. I could take your tip and have more shoes or boots that I can wear so I won't wear out the shoes I do wear. Clothing can sure take up space. When I lost weight I began to buy a new set of clothing which includes thrift and consignment pieces as well as some new. They have tended to expand in my house. I had an apartment that had a nice walk in closet and a hall closet. Ir got full. I moved and brought most of that wardrobe to where I live now, they are in boxes in the garage of my house. These clothing items can surely be a weight around your neck or it can be fun, if you have room. Some folks have whole rooms dedicated to clothing. Time and effort has to be spent to purge items that are not worn. A small wardrobe can have many benefits as well as drawbacks. Duplicates can be downsized to make room for items that one really loves. Having duplicates of other things like makeup can be wasteful. Having too much can be wasteful as well. I admire your dedication to keeping your wardrobe down to having only what you can store in your house.

    Such a good point! I found myself constantly waiting for my Everlane Air cami to go through the laundry in order to wear it again. I have it in white and black and could wear them every day. I wanted a duplicate but am not satisfied with the fabric quality (I love the cut though). I got a beautiful cotton fabric, traced the shape of the Air Cami on it and sew one myself. Super happy with this process and I think I'll start making my white t-shirts myself too (then I can be sure that the fit, length and fabric are exactly what I want...kind of tired of the hunt for the perfect tee..).

    Great video Audrey. As ever you explain very concisely the way to figure out personal style and uniform and using those things to conform to some 'rules' but bending them your own way and that's what makes it interesting. I personally enjoy having duplicates of certain pieces I love and gravitate to most in different colours, for example I have 3 different colours of berets that I wear very often and in different ways. Otherwise I don't have many duplicates of things, I try to have one type of thing or another. If I have two similar items in the same or similar colours I might decide to part with one. But that's just my way around my colourful, yet capsule, wardrobe!

    Audrey, I began this journey toward finding my personal style and reducing the number of clothing items in my closet when I discovered your TH-cam channel close to two years ago. At first, I tried mirroring your idea of a capsule wardrobe.This was helpful in the early days of my wardrobe curation. Over time, though, I realized that copying any capsule wardrobe suggestion didn’t always lead me to explore what I really liked. In short, I now have a much clearer idea of my personal style. Your videos over these many months have helped me so much. Thanks for your thought provoking content!

    I tend to have the most multiples of tops depending on their necklines. For example, I might have a crew neck navy top, one with a v-neck, one with a scoop neck, etc. I also have some clothes for summer, some for the coldest part of winter (I live in Albany, NY) and some that work for most seasons. These do tend to be close to duplicates in color and style.

    I’d love to see a video on workout clothes + minimalism. I work out 5-6 days a week and I feel like so much of my closet is athletic clothes (especially now with working from home, most of my athletic clothes are just my regular outfits, which I need to stop with haha(

    Yes! I typically own about 10 white tees at any given time. You need different styles. V-neck, scoop neck, boat neck, peplum, knotted, etc. And every year I buy about 2 more because they do show stains after only a couple years so I always need a continuous supply of more white tees.

    I don't know if this answers the question about duplicates, but this is how I "manage" my wardrobe. At the start of every season, I pull 7 outfits out of my closet that are my favorite, specifically what I would wear for each day i.e. one church outfit, a more casual outfit for a Saturday, etc. Everything that is left in the closet gets scrutinized. If it's worn out or has any stains beyond repair it goes, if it needs some sort of altering or fixing it gets pulled to do that, and if it's perfectly fine, but I'm just not loving it right now I put it away to evaluate it next season. I've learned not to get rid of perfectly good clothes on a whim, because I may later regret it and it's just wasteful. Based on what is left, I take note of what is lacking and make my list of desired purchases.

    I also feel that white shirts get dirty very quickly, and the more often we wear them the more chances for them to get stains and getting yellow from over washing! • @amikrenzel5788
    @amikrenzel5788 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree that one of the keys to duplicates is frequency of laundry. I have some things I love to wear and have enough duplicates so that I only need to do laundry every two weeks. I also live in two places and do not want to lug thins back and forth so over time I have things in both places so that if I show up with the clothes on my back I can get by for all occasions needed. I just keep the older things where I spend less time so at least I can make due. I also think knowing your activities is so key. I love beautiful summer dresses but find that I really do not wear them very much so maybe it is time to thin those out and let someone else enjoy them. The backbone of what I wear is casual and active wear so that is what I am trying to add when I need new things. Over the past two years I have acquired lots of new things (from the thrift store) so I really have more than I need so I really need to try to thin out as I put away my warm weather clothes this year...........realistically I really only need a clean casual shirt for two weeks and I fear that I have many I never reach for.

    I have limited closet space so it does affect in some way my spending.I also try to be more minimalist it is easier that now I know my style and my colour palette. I do have 3 white tees for example as I can wait to hand wash them together. They are my only whites (+ 1white shirt) so I don’t use the washing machine for so few items. I want to wait to have a full load to use the machine so I have a duplicate of several items. I love ankle boots and loafers so I have several different pairs of those as well

    Hi Audrey, I‘ve been watching your videos for a while now and they‘ve helped me a lot with all kinds of things (organizing my closet, finding a color palette, olive skin, and yes, shopping less and enjoying my clothes more). One suggestion for a video that I have is on how to pair skirts and dresses with fall jackets and coats. With the upcoming falls season and cooler temperatures, what do you wear with your long satin skirts? It doesn’t make sense to buy a new jacket for every skirt \ (maxi) dress so do you have suggestions for this (perhaps beyond pullovers)? Thanks and I’m very much looking forward to more of this good stuff on your channel.

    • @oanastamat7830

      It depends on your personal taste/uniform and/or season. I'm wearing both above and below the knee skirts and personally, I find that longer trenches and coats are the best option as they match any hem length and they protect me from the cold. As long as the coat is covering (most of) the skirt/dress, I'm good to go. The only short jacket I'm wearing with skirts is my denim jacket in late spring/early autumn but that's just my personal preference. Feel free to experiment and see what uniform you prefer.

  • @alphazunitee

    if it comes to my wardrobe, i fell in love with certain silhouettes - I'm an hourglass, so i like fitted on the ankle trousers and high waisted pants. I buy all my pants that way, be it denim, more elegant fabric or even loungue wear. Same with blouses- i have standard white shirt in all variations and most importantly styles and textures. Elegant, with ruffles and embroidery and more casual and plain cotton for everyday wear. In that way I have a lot of "the same stuff", but actually it's not this simple. Also, when you have 2 of something you really like, similar, but not quite the same, and you wear it interchangeably, you technically make the things last 2 times longer!

    I think many of my duplicates are the result of settling for something that is close to, but not exactly what I'm looking for. Once I find the item I'm looking for, if I find myself frustrated when I accidentally grab the similar, but less preferred piece, I move it to my sell/donate bin. This is absolutely the situation with my black long sleeved shirts. I have one that I've worn holes in because I love it so much, another that is slowly being worked in to give my favorite a break, and then I have another that is a heavier knit that becomes easily misshapen and is shorter than I like my shirts to be---that shirt, which is in great condition because I dislike wearing it, is now in the sell bin.
