I think anytime we take a parcel from a crop monoculture to any program mix we are making improvements and being a steward. They say a good NWSG mix has as much biodiversity in it as an amazon rain forest. The wildlife habitat is as it was meant to be. I say it all the time, there is plenty of corn, beans, and hayfields round here in western IL, but we have lost our prairie ground here in the “prairie state” to production ag ground. I only have 15 acres of CRP, but it’s amazing to see in the summer. It’s definitely helped our hunting, but more than that, has been a great tool in stewardship.
    We burnt it off yesterday.
    Take care Wes

Thanks for sharing your real life experiences on the farm. It is Amazing how adding cover to a property that is surrounded by ag can be a wildlife magnet! Thanks for watching and commenting!

I am in Murray too. I've only got 15 acres of land currently. However I have been working with the USDFW and Friends of Clarks River to get some of the acers enlisted into a partnership to turn some old, unused pasture land, into a pollinator and native grass habitat. Also working on reverting a portion of the wooded area back into a oak savannah prairie area, that is an undertaking that I am doing myself. Plenty of crop land surrounding my area, so if I can do my part in the acres that I have, to create habitat for all types of wildlife, I feel like I'm doing my part - even if its a small plot of land. Hopefully I can get others interested in this type of activity, to restore some of the land to what it used to be and help a variety of wildlife. Thanks for your content.

Steve good to hear from a neighbor! Sounds like you’ve got a great plan in place to restore land back to native landscape and do your part in providing for the wildlife, good luck to you on your project! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Good info. Will be interesting to see what they will end up allowing you to plant.

I was pretty encouraged talking to them, granted thats not the person that ultimately gets to decide what’s planted. But my understanding is if I don’t like what they want to plant, I can back out.

About half of my improvements were done through NRCS and the other through the KDFWR in their WHIP Program. Both worked out well for me. I was just over at Murray last weekend and was wondering how a person could look you up?

Good avenues for landowners to utilize. Should have sent me a message when you were over this way! Thanks for watching and commenting
