um, no? none of the shrek movies are queer allegories, theyre fictional fairytail kids movies
and shrek is an allegory for racism much more than a queer allegory
Atp the lgbtq community wans toclaim everthing 💀, next ting you know they will claim the transformer movies are queer bcs of the name
What is the difference?
@buurmeisje the difference is that a queen allegory has to do with being LGBT or you're sexual/gender, while a racial allegory has to do with how you look and your physical looks.

Afraid the movie tells us quite the opposite. Prince Charming, who is depicted as very effeminate and voiced by a homosexual actor, is the butt of several jokes while the more traditionally masculine Shrek is the hero who gets the "happy ending."
There is nothing "queer" about the relationship between Shrek and Fiona.
The only thing queer about it is how they TRANSform back and forth into humans 💀

Shrek literally just represents someone who is unforgivably himself, yet rejected in society. The movies are a gradual journey of Shrek being accepted and even loved by those that hated him without giving him a fair assessment.
You do realize a lack of acceptance is not just a gay thing right?? Even racism works better for this narrative. But, in the end, Shrek's struggle is literally a HUMAN STRUGGLE. Everyone struggles with acceptance and often changes themselves for that acceptance. Shrek teaches EVERYONE the importance of remaining who you are and others re-considering their prejudice against you.
Maybe this gave you all the clicks you wanted, but this was one of the most awful movie interpretations I have ever seen.
And never judge a book by its cover.. it’s simple stuff..

Absolutely *loved* this queer reading of Shrek 2!
One disagreement. I don't think Doris was treated in a transphobic way by the creators. Absolutely in her first appearance she is framed by transphobia, how the cishet world sees her, but she is in the end treated as simply human by all the characters we are meant to relate to. A problem I find in much of mainstream media around trans people is that they are most accepted and considered "good guys" when they are conventionally beautiful by cis normative standards and cis passing or near it. There is a cis assumption that all trans people _should_ have passing and conventional beauty as their goals and failure in these areas is often a cinematic metaphor for villainy.
The reality is that not all trans people can pass and even more importantly that not all trans people _want_ to pass. As a middle aged trans guy sometimes I pass, sometimes I don't. I always want to be seen as a guy but I have little to no desire to be seen as a _cis_ guy. (Except for in bathrooms and change rooms. I can deal with crap most of the time but when I have my pants around my ankles, yeah, then passing is to be preferred.)
I think portraying Doris as a capable, empathetic, and independent woman with a 5 o'clock shadow and a baritone voice is a fair representation of many trans women. She seems confident and comfortable in herself and in control of her environment. She is a trans icon who by the end of the movie should be seen as someone to respect and appreciate, not in spite of not passing, but for herself alone and her apparent comfort in her own skin.
I agree with this!
Hell yeah! Let trans characters be "ugly", let trans characters be evil! Tired of the perfect queer trope tbh, we're also flawed humans
@andreachibraz6453 Absolutely let gay people be evil we love that shit.
I 100% agree, she's maybe the only trans character I've ever seen that doesn't perfectly fit into their preferred gender and it's still treated with complete respect, as a younger trans person who doesn't pass by any stretch of the imagination I love her
You know Doris is a normal woman, right?
I would argue that this is more a film about racism, considering that Shrek and Fiona are both hetero and, well, have kids later on.
Since shrek the third has the stepsister as an ally to Fiona and the princesses and even has a name, to me it proves your point that the 'ugly' step sister is just a nice lady who just doesn't fit into society's standards for women.
We stan Dorris!
Exactly! I didn't want to add stuff fron Shrek 3 but it does add more
Yes totally!! This is what I thought too!
Doris is one of the better aspects of shrek the third
You do realize it’s just Larry king
The fact that you forcibly try to queer coat a movie when it is a film that is meant to just be enjoyed for a reverses the standards and Norms of the pre-established fairy tale and the actual director and producer and writer came out with and said that it's mostly to be viewed of the poor versus Rich conflict truly upsets me because you are not doing anything positive for the lgbtq you are just inserting your view and ideology to be taken as fact on your opinion on a piece of work when the creators have come out and said it has nothing to do with what you just said you can say it inspired you you can say that you can identify it and you can cast it in a view that makes you feel this way but it is not fact it is only your feelings and interpretations that's all
Very well said
Watching this, I remembered my Mum's reaction to the end of the first Shrek movie. She said she didn't like the ending because Fiona wasn't beautiful anymore. 14 year old me knew that she completely missed the point. Coming out as bi, her response to me was, "maybe you just admire women, not... anything else". I told this to a close friend who is an ally and her knowing eyeroll of support was the most comforting thing ever.

A fucking masterpiece video, I'm gonna be sharing this around with all my friends who were also raised on Shrek.
I was hoping you'd mention how the original writer of Ever Fallen in Love is bisexual, and how he often avoided gendered pronouns in his music to kind of signal his identity in The Buzzcock's music.
But I'm honestly just glad you mentioned the music as a part of the overall point.
I didn't know that! Excellent detail
I don't know if it's ever going to be finished as it turned out to be more ambitious than intended, but in my Victorian cyberpunk video game that I'm working on, the goal is no gendered pronouns whatsoever. I think there's a lot to explore in a supposedly post-gender society that is still crumbling under the weight of its own inherently divisive mode of production.

Also of note about this song and band: they were featured in an English trans romance film (AMAB + cis man) from the 90's called Different For Girls. It's the first place I'd heard the song. The movie itself is charming and worth a watch, from what I recall.
The stolen aesthetic on part of the fairy God Mother made me think about how Kim K started using the makeup techniques of Drag Queen and how it became so incredibly popular among straight women...
It's a general rule. The mainstream always devours the revolution. Even fucking John Cage's 4'33", once rebellious, is now "enjoyed" by posh motherfuckers.
So they stole it and made it straight
this literally makes zero sense
"Literally compulsory heterosexuality"
Dude, they're not talking about sexuality. They're talking about the contrast between (contractually enforced) social obligations and responsibilities with the freedom of the individual - in this case an individual that never consented to the "terms and conditions."
bro was off too much ket when he made this
Loved this. I think Fiona could easily be read as an intersex icon, with the parallel of her parents having tried to "choose" for her to be just one cisnormative idea that they were comfortable with, and treating her second aspect as something to be hidden and fixed before anyone could find out.
My god I’ve never thought of it that way. The way they pick out the more “preferable” characteristics and don’t accept her for her whole self. but doing that its not enough, they still sorta lock her away from what she is. They acknowledge it enough to shun her whilst trying to completely hide that part of her identity

Pretty sure the scene of Fiona throwing the mermaid into the sea isn’t a depiction of “throwing heterosexual norms away.” It’s Fiona mad at someone kissing the love of her life, as most people would be
I watched Shrek 2 for the first time this year (due to growing up in a household with similar values to the organization which boycotted Shrek 2 on release) and was blown away by how excellent of a movie it is. Thank you so much for your analysis!! Your use of the queer lens put into words some of the reasons why the movie resonated so much with me :-)
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
His lens is wrong btw
I always wondered why Puss never had any of the potion, but it makes sense when you point out how he represents the fetishised foreigner.
It also makes me think that, as a bi-coded cisgender character - as John nicely comments on - Puss is in a position to navigate heteronormative society with a [clearly limited] degree of passability. His public image is that of a dangerous assassin and manhunter, and thus associated with marginality but also with some expected traits in the performance of masculinity. So Puss doesn't need a physical transformation in order to accompany Shrek and Donkey on their journey towards assimilation; he needs to keep his queerness hidden and to emphasize his 'macho persona' - which ties also in the question of the otherness he is subjected as a foreigner. As a bisexual cis man myself, the character of Puss in Boots is so interesting and dear to me, even from his very introduction, when the king (a stand-in for heteronormative patriarchy) hires him to exterminate the marginalized queer characters. I think it represents vividly the patriarchal 'invitation' - actually a convocation, or we could say "hiring" - to bisexual men to exterminate their queerness and whatever snippets of queer culture that grows in and around them (at least those who don't subvert the gender performance of masculinity overtly, like in terms of clothing, gestural and spoken language, and so on - those of us who wear our boots on the street). I felt and feel that pull intensely in my life, and only queer anti-capitalist solidarity can drive us to fight that ideological trap.
(Sorry for the long answer, your comment and John's video ignited my thoughts)
im sorry but nothing can be more conventionally attractive than cats, puss is already pinnacle of beauty, there is nothing to evolve into 😌
@@joaovlfrancawhoa! This is a great interpretation. What do you consider to be Puss in Boots bi codes characteristics? I just stumbled across this queer analysis of Shrek and I'm trying to wrap my head around it.
@@vinegar_mince8746 hi! Thank you! Well, while we of course acknowledge that sexual orientation, gender identity and gender performance are autonomous (albeit communicating) entities in one's objective and subjective life, when we look into the stereotypes and tropes surrounding sexuality in general and bisexuality in particular, the picture gets messier, with these concepts all entangled. A bi-coded character, then, is not only or necessarily one that shows clear-cut romantic/sexual interest on characters of more than one gender along the story; they can also be the character that adheres to some of their assigned gender performance rules while deviating from others. This deviating from the norm may not be so evident as in the case with gay-coded characters, lying, instead, on that muddled, buffer zone between genders and sexualities and desires and wardrobes that is both the joy and the bane of many angsty bisexuals over here, hehe. This buffer experience is commonly and perniciously translated as "bisexuals are confused", as airy, hesitant, unsteady, wavering, untrustworthy people, and so on. Puss is not just the character that at first sight seems to be a straight male but later goes on to nonchallantly declare that Prince Charming is *dreamy* when Doris physically describes the man. Puss fights with both masculine-ascribed sword bravado and feminine-ascribed cute eyes seduction. He's initially portrayed as an untrustworthy character, with flickering allegiances (can it get more bi-angst than that?), and his story arc is about proving his loyalty to his marginalized, oppressed peers without abandoning his bi-approach to life.
@@joaovlfranca he is not bisexual
Can we…
Not project our beliefs onto popular pieces of media?
The Fairy Godmother's rendition of Holding Out for a Hero is an absolute and undeniable Club Banger indeed. The fact that it draws on classic camp performances and queer aesthetics adds extra dramatics and a je ne sais quoi that Bonnie Tyler's original version lacks. This is one of those covers that improves the song. I have also listened to the Japanese translated cover from Bullet Train (but not watched the film) and I rank them like this:
1) Shrek 2/Fairy Godmother
2) Bullet Train
3) Bonnie Tyler/Original
