      I feel like a lot of this applies to neurodivergent people (especiallly ADHD, OCD, and Autism) as when our traits are socially acceptable (like keeping shelves tidy, into popular TV shows, good at math, etc) we seem to be fine, but people start treating you differently when you let down that guard or mask, and let some of the less acceptable things come out. The anxiety, the impulses, the difficulty with socializing are things that never fully go away for us, but can be used in combination with our strengths to do good things when we accept who we are. For safety, some people have to hide their struggles, just like with Chadwick Boseman hiding his cancer from people, or me hiding my invisible disability from potential employers. But when you're in a place you can be yourself, it's a wonderful feeling.

    Oh this kicked ASS. It’s also interesting to think about the fact that in the musical adaptation, there’s a whole song with explicit references to anti-assimilationist queer culture called “freak flag,” ending with Pinocchio actually saying “I’m wood, I’m good, get used to it!”

      Yeah, I was a little bit surprised that the musical wasn't mentioned in the video, given that korviday seems to have seen it.

I can't relate to trans-ness, as I am a cis woman but I have struggled with my sexuality & neurodiversity growing up in a media-driven society and have recently started unlearning harmful stereotypes and learning about my true self. Harold assimalted into society, so he's challenged by how Shrek and Finona don't bother with society at all. Really, he should be sympathetic to them, and it's only societal norms that drive him to be antagonistic.

  • @Ben-nu4uj

    I mean, if you think about it, the fairy godmother is also a fairytale creature. She has magic, she's a fairy, the difference is that she looks human enough for that to be acceptable. Also, fun fact! In Shrek the musical, the fairytale creatures sing a song called "Freak Flag" (I believe that's the title) and one of the lyrics is "Let your freak flag wave, let your freak flag fly. Never take it down, never take it down, raise it way up high!"

    • @xJackDarkStonex
      @xJackDarkStonex 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Just reading the lyrics is enough to make me cry. Lol
      I watched this musical just after coming out to my mother (I thought she knew) and was shocked at her response. She was always very supportive of me in everything, and had even told me days before I came out "you know you can tell me anything right? No matter what?" Hence why I thought she knew.
      But her response was not very welcoming and there were hurtful things said. All the while I was going through diagnosed severe depression. We've since talked and she revealed that her fears we're not about me being gay but about how my father and brother would treat me (since I've already been treated like shit by them before for seeming gay, she feared that actually being gay would make them hurt me more).
      Anyway that conversation didn't come till way later. And out of pure coincidence a friend lent me their Netflix because I wanted to watch Shrek the Musical. And when I watched it, the lgbt messages and similarities we're not lost on me. And I was isolating myself in my room to avoid confrontation and I just couldn't stop crying. It was the best cry I've ever had in my life. And I still cry when I watch this Musical because it quite literally felt like it came to save me from a really dark place. It came at the most perfect moment for me.
      Sorry that I just unloaded this here I just really felt something when I read the lyrics.

Now, knowing I am a queer trans non-binary autistic person... Yep, checks out. The idea of assimilation was just HELL to me. And when Fiona was with Charming, thinking he was Shrek, that was my literal nightmare. I can relate to a lot of the themes in this video. And I know that it’s a completely different situation, as I am a fairly traditionally masculine presenting cishet man. But I’m also 5’5 and nearly 300 pounds at this point, and I was raised by lesbian parents to go against a lot of toxic masculinity. I can relate to the feeling of having to decide whether I want to assimilate or not. I went to high school in a verrrry conservative area, and I was on nearly every sports team. I had a lot of pressure on me to loose weight and try to turn myself into a “manly man”, especially because I was never going to be able to change what I was made fun of and emasculated the most for, my height and my lesbian parents. And I assimilated well. While I never did get completely skinny, I focused on being strong, and I set records at my school and even won a wrestling state championship. I fell pretty hard into jock culture, always talking shit and honestly being a bit of an asshole. But it was draining, and after I graduated I stopped lifting, stopped doing any sports, and ended up dropping all of my male friends from high school because I just didn’t want to have to act tough anymore or pretend to like the same kinds of people they liked. I gained a fuckton of weight and I still struggle with accepting my body. I finally let myself date another chubby person and I realized that I didn’t have to get the perfect girl or look perfect myself to be accepted and loved. And most importantly I’m working on letting myself be soft and fully feel my emotions again without shame. Self-acceptance in the face of societal norms is hard, and I still struggle with it a lot, but it’s a battle that’s necessary in life

      @@R_L_A_G This is just the same argument that people use to tell lesbians they're not lesbian, by saying they just havn't found the right man yet.
      We use our identity as how we identify in the moment, and one's identity might change, or it might not. I'm asexual, and have considered myself asexual for the last two years. That might change in the future, that I don't know, doesn't change what I am currently. Same as with my gender, you respect my gender and pronouns because that's who I am right now, and it might change in the future, or (more likely) it might not.

    • @R_L_A_G
      @R_L_A_G 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Pazliacci I wasn't arguing, I was just saying I'm questioning because of the fact that sometimes people who don't indulge in sexual pleasure, indulge on rich food. I'm not saying that there are no illegitimate ones. I actually thought I was asexual for a while, because I wasn't really personally attracted to anybody and I really wasn't into sex. Then I suddenly had a flood of urges when I was 29.

    This kept resonating with me. Thought back of my own life and having to move to different country at very young age. My name is not typical for region where we moved to and still some people refuse to use my name and instead give me more local sounding variation of name to call me. It feels similar to have to give up some part of your identity to assimilate. And what a waste of effort for I end up finding myself also on sexual and gender minority status.
