Here in Trinidad (Caribbean) we use the leaves quite often and in a variety of ways. The much younger leaves are preferred as they are way more tender, cook much faster, don't really give off the itching chemical and to us tastier. You tend to get less because they melt down so nicely. We also add some coconut milk for extra flavour. We make soups and fried delicacies from them also. Really, really delightful.

Finally found someone who explains why to cook taro for a long time. In the Philippines we have a taro dish called Laing. My favorite. They say not to stir a lot while cooking too. It’s hard to find fresh taro leaves in the US. Pleasantly surprised they grow well in Georgia. Love your recipe. Thank you.❤️

i will try this. we use taro leaves here in trinidad where it is called "dasheen bush" and the taro is called dasheen. we do the stew dasheen leaves and add in coconut milk (it makes it even creamier) and we also make " baghi rice" which is a pilaf made with taro root leaves, a bit of pumpkin and lots of coconut milk. thanks for sharing...we look forward to trying it your way

I haven't heard of a pilaf rice with taro leaves before and it does sound delicious. I am tempted to try this next time I get another harvest of taro leaves. Thanks for sharing the way you cook the leaves. It's nice to see how others prepare it. :)

I'm trying this recipe for the first time today. I grow the taro plant in my backyard and never knew what to do with the gorgeous leave that I thought were to good to throw away. Thanks to you for addressing the poisoning fact so well. I read about it some other place but they didn't quite address how to address it with cooking for a long time - just like cyanide in rice, duh!!!😀
I especially like that little know fact at the end - "like water on taro leaf", so beautiful 😍

Hi there, thank you for watching. We're glad you find our videos educational. We grew up around these plants and other ingredients and it makes us really happy to share what we know. I've seen a few taro leaves in coconut milk recipe and it looks fantastic. How do you call this dish in the Philippines? I've heard so many good things about the Philippines and would really love to be able to visit your country one day. ლ(╹◡╹ლ)

    • @chaberwil13
      @chaberwil13 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

awww! ^____^ thank you for your reply... This plant is very common in our country too... In fact, we have many varieties... we also have the non-itchy variety... some of the common dishes for this that I know are
      1. LAING (the taro leaves are also sliced like tiny ribbons. we also add sliced stems and tiny slices of taro roots which are really chewy... then we cook them in coconut milk and some spices until the milk turned to oil.. there are spicy version and sweet version of laing.. I love the sweet and spicy.. ^_^ To non vegans like me, we add fried dried anchovies... In some versions I've seen, they dry the sliced leaves and stems the whole day before cooking... I don't know why but I guess to remove the itchy substance and for the taro leaves to be creamier when cooked in coco milk. there are sun dried taro leaves sold in the market, too.)
      2. PINANGAT ( we usually wrap fish, either fresh or dried, with taro leaves and securely tied with coconut leaves. we add some tamarind or vinegar, some spices and coconut milk)
I'm not a cook so I'm not good at explaining about these dishes.. I have a good Mauritian friend from Curepipe, I'm not familiar with Mauritian food so when she posted a certain food on facebook, I googled the recipe... That's where I accidentally found your page.. ^_^

    Hello Tenuja
    Thank you for this recipe.
I also cook katchu as they grow in my garden.
We have the red katchu, which is so delicious once cooked.
Is the red taro root 'Violet Mauve'?
My dad seems to think that they are inedible.
However I bought some for him from the local vegetable stall and they were quite expensive.
Could I use them straight from the garden?
I will be watching the rest of your videos too.
