    Thank you for your videos. I wanted to get two sugar gliders, but after hearing how many times your gliders have bitten you really hard, and how difficult it was to socialize your gliders with each other, I decided against getting them. Obviously not everyone is a good candidate to own gliders, and they wouldn't have good home with an owner who doesn't want to deal with all their care needs. Your information helped me avoid buying gliders and then having to give them to someone else.
    I will still watch your videos because even though I won't be getting gliders, I still enjoy watching them!

      I am really glad my videos have helped you make an informed decision. To be fair, a well socialized Joey would probably not be that difficult to bond with and sometimes intros work fast and flawless, but you can never know in advance. Knowing what the risks are and deciding if that is something you could do is really the best way to go. I wish more people would think like you :-)

    It was really helpful to hear the part about them not necessarily needing us to be happy. I got two 1-year-old girls three weeks ago, and I try to spend 1-2 hours with them every night, but on nights I'm not able to I feel SO guilty. Hearing you say they won't get depressed if I miss a night or can't spend as much time as I want was really reassuring. Obviously I will still try to get in as much play time as possible to speed up the bonding process but i do feel much better about it now! I've never heard anyone talk about that before so thank you for all the info!!

      I know, I was so surprised to see how many people actually ask this question. While mine, especially the boys, love bonding with me (yay for treats lol), they won't mind if I skip a couple nights when I feel tired or have to go out.

      I did a ton of research before I got the girls and continue to watch videos like yours to make sure I'm caring for them the best way possible, but you're the first person to ever make that point in anything I've seen! So thank you! Hopefully I'm doing a good enough job ^^ we aren't fully bonded (it's been 3 weeks) but they are way more comfortable with me and have started climbing on my hands and arms so we've made progress!

    I would like to point out that the video of the SGS 2 diet has been removed and will be refilmed soon. After talking to the creator about it we have realized that a couple things from the video might have been misunderstood (some people thought chicken broth meant with added condiments) and that the choice of ingredients was not ideal, not because of their calcium:phosphorus ratio, but because some of the the ingredients I have used were very high in oxalates and iron. That would be bad because oxalates bind with calcium and prevent it from being absorbed.
    That being said a new video will be filmed soon-ish and my interpretation of the recipe adjusted to the whishes of the creator.
    Thank you for your understanding!

      Thank you very much! It's amazing what mistakes people make just because they don't know better. That is the whole purpose of this channel...to help everyone learn a little bit about their gliders. I don't think long time owners are interested in my videos so they are usually made for newer owners who still have a lot to learn. I myself still learn new things every single day and I am happy to share the info with you guys. We are all learning together :-)

    Hi Andra~~~~~
    This is a very educational and wise Q/A tutorial. I agree with everything you have shared. I thought of two things you did not include that might be helpful, so I am mentioning them here with the understanding that you can delete my comment if you don't think it is helpful or correct. I don't mind. I respect your glider wisdom much. :) One advice I read from a glider vet that I don't oft hear but it seems wise, is: If you need or wish to change a diet (example: if you have new gliders, but you want to feed them a different glider diet than the one they are on: The advice is to do this gradually over a month. Week 1, give them 75% the diet they are used to, with 25% of the one you will be using. Week 2, give them half, half. Week 3, give them 75% your diet, as long as they seem fine and healthy. Of course, any diet should be one of the healthy approved sugar glider diets such as what Andra suggests here. The reason for gradual change is sometimes their bodies need to adapt to a completely different diet. I can relate. (I moved to the Midwest once, and my own system went through a shock wirh completely different good staples. :D) At any rate, it seemed sound. One other note on diet and scent: I understand that we all have a scent. But one reason a glider can smell more stinky is if it is eating too many insects. Insects are high in protein and fat. If your glider smells very stinky and eats a lot of insects, you can try adjusting the diet to an established glider diet with less insect content. Some scents are natural. It is funny that there is, on some level, a corelation between what we eat and how we smell. I am just spellbound by the cutefulness :) of gliders. (The wee hands and the delicate swively ears and many sounds and snuggly searches for that cozy pouch. And don't forget the stripe.
    The flights! OK, I must hide now. TY for really great advice for anyone thinking of owning sugar gliders.

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for your input! While the diet thing might seem logical at first, after many years of owning gliders veteran owners have come to the conclusion that you do not need to gradually change a diet, especially if it is a bad one.
      As for the smell...thank you, yes! If they eat too much protein or too many insects they will indeed smell (especially their pee and poop) so I should have mentioned that :-) Thank you for your input!

    I have a pretty decent size room and what I do is simply have a small bird cage and put it on a dresser and have their pouches in there but I leave the cage open all the time so they can go where ever in my room (all doors and windows shut) and it works great. They know where to go and not to go. They have a great life

      Because some people might look up on youtube how to put leashes on their gliders and then this video should clarify it :-) I also put other words that I don't necessarily agree with like "sugar bear" but that's for the people that need this info the most...the ones being lured into owning gliders by pet stores or at fairs and very often being told that they are super easy to take care of.

    I let my kids get two sugar gliders from a friend. It was a quick decision that had to be made and we went for it. Even with some reading on them, I wasn't quite as prepared as I thought. The cage they came in is waaay too small. The wheel in it is a rodent wheel and I am still trying to figure out a proper balanced diet. I look fwd to watching more of your videos. Thank you! Are there places to find good used cages cheaper? I've seen some beautiful large bird cages on yard sale sites but so far all of them have the gaps for the bars too wide.

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy

      As I don't live in the U.S. I can't help much, but I've seen some pictures of very big cages purchased off eBay for as little as 90$. EVery now and again the Critter Nation is on sale, even on Amazon so you could also check that. If you join one of the bigger groups on Facebook, I'm sure they can give you a couple tips about where you can look :-)

      That is a very young age and at that age they should have other responsibilities. At that age children can handle them and help take care of them, but they should not be 100% responsible for them.

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samlaknahur974 Sam, at such a young age this is a very big responsibility that has to be carefully discussed with your caregivers. Taking care of them, preparing their food, cleaning their cage is one thing... but you also need money for vitamins and especially for vet visits. In case of illness a vet visit can cost a couple hundred $ and you need your caregivers to be willing to pay for that too. I believe that the youngest you should get them is when you can start making a bit of money so that you can afford taking care of them even when it can get quite expensive 😊

    Thank you so much for your videos, I'm educating myself on suggies right now, I'm supposed to be picking up my pair this weekend. My question is, while bonding time starts do I handle them both at once or one at a time. I haven't heard anyone say specifically, and I just want to be as prepared as I possibly can be. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what is easier for you. I bonded with both of the girls at the same time when I first got them and I didn't really have a problem with it. Evidently...when there's 4 of them, that's a whole different story... One of them wants to jump left, the other right, the other crawls down your legs... But with only 2 it's not too difficult to keep them on you at the same time :-) Just do what is easier for you, there's no written rule. When bonding with your gliders it depends so much more on their personality and what keeps them happy. For example if you try putting them in a bonding bag but they will crab for 1 hour straight, then it is obviously a bad choice. Nala I just stuffed in my bra after a week and she instantly turned into a bra baby. Dobby, on the other hand, does not like to sleep on me at all unless he is in a bonding bag. Oreo never minded being handled, at all. He loves to stay on me, but he haaaaates bonding bags so much, he will fight them until I take him out. They're all different. You'll have to slowly find out what they like and what they don't like.

    we feed our gliders a mixture of fruit and sometimes spinach, as well as some pellets. and we sometimes give them some yogurt drops and meal worms. do I have to do a specific diet? because mine get board of the same food so the types of fruit change every night. is that ok?

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can change the fruits & veggies in your staple diet. I like to do 3-4 different ones at a time and each night serve a different mix. But yes, a staple is important. It also contains much needed vitamins, nutrients. You can also serve the food fresh each night if you want to, but still have to make sure that you add the right vitamins and the right fruits and veggies (you need to keep in mind calcium, phosphorus, oxalates...).

  • @suzyburke
    @suzyburke 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That was awesome! Great information. As for the diet you chose, how do you know the ratio of cal/pros at any one feeding of fresh fruits and veggies? Or do you stick to a selected mix each feeding along with the staple diet?

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I have around 10 different recipes I have put together after calculating the overall ratio of the mix. I've written them down and use only those depending on season and what fruits/veggies I have on hand. You can search on google the ca:p ratio of fruits/veggies or you can use the traffic light system that comes with the SGS2 diet, that is the easier version:
      ***Green Fruits & Veggies - At least 80%***
      The GREEN items with a ratio of 1:1 and above. Use mostly these items:
      Papaya, Rosemary, Bok Choi, Squash (Spaghetti), Raspberries, Blackberries, Celery, Squash (Butternut), Custard Apple, Java (Jambolian) Plum, Apple (with Skin), Pear, Iams(UK Only) or James Wellbeloved, or Orijen cat biscuits, Persimmon (Sharon Fruit).
      GREEN with a ratio of between 0.97 - 0.7:1
      Guava, Green Beans, Carrots, Squash (Acorn), Blackcurrant, Mango, Sugar Snap / Snow Peas, Rutabaga, Dates, Cherries (Sweet), Apricots, Broccoli (florets), Sweet Potato, Kiwi, Strawberry, Cucumber, Broccoli, Mange Tout.
      ***Amber Fruits & Veggies - At most 20%***
      AMBER - use only 20% in weight of these
      Dandelion Greens, Spinach, Watercress, Kale, Collard Greens, Grapefruit (Pink, Red, & White), Pineapple, Tangerine/Mandarin, Lime, Orange (Navel), Raspberries, Lemon, Fig (fresh), Kumquat, Cantaloupe Melon, Honeydew Melon, Blueberry, Star Fruit (Carambola), Cauliflower, Pumpkin.
      ***Red Fruits & Veggies - Very little***
      RED - Use very sparingly or not at all if toxic
      Chinese (Asian Pear), Peach, Plum, Pomegranate, Nectarine, Banana, Tomato, Physalis (Cape Gooseberry), Passion Fruit, Sweetcorn.
      Also my mix is combined with their vitamins and frozen into ice cubs. I do not serve the fruits and veggies along their staple diet, they are included in it, similar to the TPG diet. I have a different video on how I prepare the SGS 2 diet, you can watch that if you would like to, it gives you an overall idea of how easy/difficult it is to prepare it and also I have the measurements/recipe for one of the versions I serve :-)

    • @suzyburke
      @suzyburke 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome Sugar Glider Mommy thank you for sharing the list! That really helps. I will re-watch your SGS2 video again. Mine love the veggies but give little notice to the approved staple diet. I've tried two so far. Wambaroo and TPG. When offered Ensure they will lick the bowl clean!!! It must be my "Not a cook" means! lol I have to have a recipe to exactly follow. I don't think mine like honey. Weird huh? The love chicken, dandelion greens, quail eggs, and assorted green peas and beans.
      I will keep trying to find what they will enjoy to eat in a staple diet. You have truly been a blessing to me and my sugar glider family... yes I bought the snacky mouse for treats!

      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awww, thank you! I'm glad you find my videos helpful!
      The SGS2 doesn't contain any honey so they might like this diet a lot. Mine were very picky eaters, but with the SGS2 they don't get to pick and choose anymore and they eat everything they get. You can continue using the HPW powder for the SGS2 diet so it's perfect.
      And the snacky mice are awesome! :-D

      The video of the SGS 2 will be refilmed soon and the list of fruits and vegetables will be adjusted. If you find the time, please read the pinned post under this video to understand why these changes have to be made!
      The diet can be prepared as until this point, but in the future you should really use the traffic light system for picking out the fruits and vegetables and not only pick them based on their overall ratio.

      If they have an open wound/scratch on their body and it comes into contact with cat saliva, they can get very, very sick from it. Many owners have sugar gliders and cats, just make sure you wash your hands properly before handling the suggies and keep the cats away at all times 😊

    We always give our gliders different fruit and it's usually fresh. I just hope that what we're feeding them gives them the proper nutrition. They're perfectly healthy, I was just wondering if what we feed them is ok. And another question if you don't mind. How often do you clean the cage?

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without the proper vitamins and nutrients things can go downhill very, very fast. Especially with not feeding enough calcium. Spinach, for example, has a great ca:p ratio - one would think - but the high content of oxalates keeps the body from absorbing the calcium so its really close to useless if you just take it because of the calcium content.Trying to get a glider healthy once it shows signs of a calcium deficiency is almost impossible. You are responsible for their well-being, so you do whatever you think is best. I do recommend, however, you look into a proper diet for them: sugarglider.info/staple-diets/
      I clean my cage 2 per week and do almost daily spot cleaning. I also have a video on cage hygiene :-)

    Getting a glider in a month

  • @jumanjee7509
    @jumanjee7509 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does 8 weeks old sugar glider hard to bond with like if I buy a sugar glider that age is it okay after 3 days of leaving them get to know the cage and everything I start to hold him/ her or I should start bonding with them with a pouch because I heard that gliders at that age get used to ppl easily and don't worry I've done my search and I've been looking at gliders information for 5 years

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I would not purchase a suggie that young. Bonding has nothing to do with age, it is honestly a very big myth. I've had Oreo at 10 or 11 weeks, if I remember well. The other young guys came to me at 3 and 4 months old respectively. But I took in a very old glider, Dobby, at 13 years old (!!!) and he was without a doubt, by far the most bonded to me after only a few days. I spent just as much time with every one of them, but only Dobby was going crazy if he heard that I was at home and he was not allowed to spend time with me as much as possible. Not simply outside the cage but close to me. If I left the room, he followed. If I was washing dishes, he was playing on the kitchen counter. If I left for the bedroom, he quickly followed.
      So you see, it has nothing to do with their age, it's mostly about their character.

      Awesome Sugar Glider Mommy thank you I just wanted to know because a lot of breeders and sugar glider information site's talk about how if you get a sugar glider at a young age he/she will be attached to you more and about the sugar glider age a lot of sugar glider breeders and shops online sell them at 8 weeks and above

    how much do they cost

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on how much you are willing to spend...it starts at around 500$ for two and a cage. Then the vitamins, toys, safe wheels, cage sets.......but they're worth it if you enjoy them as animal companions :-)

    Are sugar gliders nocturnal or diurnal animals?

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are nocturnal, though some of them don't mind taking breaks from their naps during the day. But mainly they are awake and active at night and it should also remain that way (I know some people try to change that behaviour) :-)

    Is it OK to have 1 sugar glider, because I can only get 1.

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, unfortunately it is really not ok at all. It does not matter how much time you spend with that one sugar glider, eventually it will most probably become very sad and die. Very few sugar gliders live happy on their own, too few! I suggest you wait until you have the money for two, at least! :-)

      I have 4 of them (Mother,Father,2 children male and female) but I put them in different cages because the husband is really cannibalistic and bites the wife's back until it bleeded, and the children keeps scratching the mother and the father wants to eat the children too, so they stay in 3 separate cages (the children are together,thats all) but i stick the cages next to each other. Im still really pissed they wont get along, even though its been 2 months.

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should really try neutering the male. Mating wounds are fairly common in Sugar Gliders, especially when the male is intact. You should neuter both males and try re-introducing them afterwards. I'd love to know how that works out!

    I live in England and it can get cold I am thinking of using a heat lamp but I do anymore not know what to do please help, are heat lamps safe for them?

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would recommend heating the room with a space heater instead. Heat lamps are unsafe. Also add extra layers of fleece (little fleece blankets) inside of their pouches. But keeping the room at a warm temperature is really important (ideally somewhere between 22-26°C).

    Wow... Someone should really look into this site that came up when I was looking up that whole "cat saliva" thing because it had so much misinformation that it was basically the exact opposite of your video going as far as to say they just get along with other pets because of that whole "not a rodent" thing and how you don't need to bring them to a vet

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe Lisa Luu (another suggie youtuber) once said something along the lines "A laser pointer doesn't smell like rodents either, but the cats still chase it". I'm happy you did more research and found out that it is not true and yes, they need vets, especially if they get ill... Only a pet rock will not require vet care :-)

    • @Gruntled346
      @Gruntled346 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing is those were just examples! that page had so much misinformation on it it seemed like they were doing it on purpose! Might as well have been a "what not to do" page

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Certain pages indeed do it on purpose to make you rely on them only. For example giving them different names so when you hear about said animal you will google it and instead of finding reliable information you will only find 5-7 webpages with the same information that actually only belong to the same seller.
      They also make you feed only their food as recommended by them and if they still die...they will replace them with new ones. What a great way to seal the deal "No worry, there's plenty more where that came from, just waste your money on our food and you'll get your animals for free if they die from it."... I could go on and on and on.

    I have this swimming pool which has no water in it, and around the pool there are trees and i hang beds on the trees for them to sleep in (there's a roof above it so they dont get wet if it rains) but for some reason they prefer to sleep in really tiny holes where I cant reach them, and also because its so dirty 😢😲😷

    Wow this is the most informative video by far! I made the huge mistake of buying only one baby girl a year ago. I bought her at a fair, yes shoot me for that, terrible mistake I made on not knowing what I was getting into. They lied to people making us think they're the easiest pets to take care of and they have the cheapest and easiest diet, they only need one apple a week!! they said, and blah blah... they're freaking adorable looking so I fell for it :(
    PEOPLE DO NOT BELIEVE OR BUY ANYTHING FROM POCKET PETS!!! they're so full of shit
    But I haven't give up on her yet, she's sort of bonded to me 'cause she's not scare of me anymore but she bites every time I put my bare hand close to her, and it's hard no to flinch 'cause it hurts a like hell :'( but I'll use your tips and see if it works.
    Thanks to your videos I've learned a lot of things I been doing wrong so THANKS for the info ;)

      We weren't born experts, Lizette. We learn from our mistakes. I am glad you have done your research and know how to be a better glider mommy now :-) Don't forget to buy her a friend too, it will make such a difference. Unfortunately many people first get to know them at fairs...and have no idea what they are getting themselves into.

    great video, very helpful. Question: do they take sand baths?

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! And no, they don't. They take their "baths" on their own - they have 2 grooming nails on each (back) leg and they will wet those and groom themselves with them. That is more than sufficient to keep them squeaky clean! If you go through my videos I have a very short one of my mosaic taking a "bath" inside his helicopter toy :-)
