Sugar gliders are very adorable marsupials and I love mine very much, but don't buy them as an impulse as they have very special needs and you have to be well informed before purchasing them.
A good staple diet with all the nutrients and supplements they need is a must. Pellets are only to be used as occasional snacks or during the day in case they get hungry. Other than that a pelleted diet is not a complete diet.
If you need a good diet, here are some recommended:
TPG - The Pet Glider (also known as the Priscilla Price diet)
BML - Bourbon's Modified Leadbeaters
HPW - High Protein Wombaroo
AWD - Australian Wombaroo Diet
LGRS - Lucky Glider Rescue & Sanctuary Suggie Soup
VGV - Val's Green Variety
and a couple more
I personally feed the SGS 2 as I've had the best experience with it. It's a diet mostly used in Europe.
Preparing their food takes up to 2 hours, I make 4-5 different batches and freeze it in cubes and it lasts me for around 6-8 weeks for 4 sugar gliders.
Sugar gliders live up to 15 years so you need to make sure they are the right pet for you before you purchase.
If you decide to purchase, please purchase from a reputable breeder and stay away from pet stores that sell them. More often than not they will sell you sick gliders or give false information about keeping them as pets.

I sit in the floor with my glider and she climbs up on me and finds a place to curl up into a ball on my legs and goes to sleep.But at night in her cage she makes that hissing with a small "bark" at the end sound(she makes that sound when she's scared).And sometimes I pick her up when she's sleeping and she wakes up a little,looks at me,then goes back to sleep in my hands. She's still very scared of me though because ive only had her for 4 days.
Some gliders need more time to adjust, while others love you after 2 minutes. Give her more time, 4 days is just so little.
I was super lucky with my 2, they have been with me since wednesday, and the first tent time with them, they were gliding straight to my face, toffee loves belly rubs and sherbet loves gliding XD

Aww firstly they’re amazing pets! But make sure if you have males they get neutered or they stink, and can get rather grumpy! Not to mention unwanted pregnancy’s, also feed them on the SGS2 they can’t pick at their food that way and you can make it up in advance and freeze it to last, also if you’re a light sleeper don’t keep them in their room, they tend to bark at night and glide around like crazy 😂 also do tent time! I use a pop up fabric puppy playpen for it but as well as helping your gliders to bond it’s great fun! Www.sugarglidershop.co.uk is a brilliant site if you’re in the UK and there is a Facebook forum called sugar gliders UK that is extremely helpful and supportive of any questions or advice that you need, but tbh the longer you own them, the more you learn, every glider is different and likes things differently 😂 toffees my shy one who just likes to snuggle on my shoulder most of the evening and sherbet is the pain who likes to try and kill himself by gliding at glass doors, he’s also very independent and doesn’t like to be on my shoulder going up the stairs he prefers to make his own way up 😂 oh yeah also make sure it’s a reputable breeder who actually cares about the welfare of the gliders he/she is selling 😊😊good luck with your new gliders, you’re gonna love them!!xx
I’m rewatching this as yesterday I finally bought a pair of sugar gliders! They won’t be ready to leave their momma for a few weeks yet so I’m not expecting to get them until the first week of May. I wanted to thank you for making these videos because they helped me so much during the researching process. I hope to be an awesome sugar glider mommy too! Thanks again.
so true bonding does not have a specific time period. A glider will trust when its ready to. My male is going to be 4 years old and I got him as a joey he still has his moods of not wanting to touch

gardenGnome Jay I feel like that's the case for a lot of animals you keep. It's like that when I have hamsters. I don't force them. Though, most of the hamsters I've had were pretty content. lol

Annoying them isn’t going to help. It’s going to put them off and you’ll have no chance of getting them like that. You should show them that you’re responsible by taking care of current pets, (if you have any) washing dishes, cleaning your room, and washing your clothes on your own without being told. If you already do that, save up money and ask them how you can help to pay. You could sublty mention it once in a while but don’t be constantly annoying them about it.

I just shared your video with a new glider owner! And I'm watching for myself as well because I've only had gliders since October. Two of mine are pretty bonded with me.
My other one (he was the second one I got) has a wild personality; he is very playful and he will jump on me/run around on me and down my shirt but he does not like for me to hold him. He still crabs when I go near the pouch. He bites and draws blood sometimes. Still. I got him at the beginning of November. I'm struggling with him. I've stopped trying to pick him up and I just let him come to me if he wants to.

veronica corningstone most gliders don't like to be "held". If they run on your, jump to your when they get scared or go down your shirt, that's a very good sign. That means that trust you and you're their safe place. Most gliders you see being held in someone's hand, is a baby baby. I breed sugar gliders and even the joeys by 4 weeks out of pouch, would rather be out exploring than be held. As long as they know you're safe, that bond will only get stronger. What you're describing is the beginning stages of bonding. Biting is going to happen less and less but probably won't ever stop. They don't always bite out of anger or fear. Sometimes it's mistaking your fingers for food or sometimes it's grooming you. Grooming you is a very good indicator of a strong bond. They just can get carried away and it feels like biting. I call those suggie kisses. My first glider bit my neck and then started wiggling his butt on me. At first my feelings were hurt because we'd become so close but when I told a friend about it, I found out it was a love bite and him marking me as one of his colony. So you just have to learn to read their behavior!
Your videos have been the most informative I have watched. My husband and I wanted a sugar glider but your honesty (which is good) has changed our mind. As lovely as they are they are not the pet for us. I have had a ferret, 3 different types of birds, dog, cats, fish, turtles, rabbit, hamsters and other pets but I don't think I can handle them peeing on me. If they could be potty trained we might consider it. Good that we knew everything before going through the expense.
my sugar glider doesnt bite, dosnt bark, but when i try to pick him up he hold on the cage like its the last day of his life lol,

Thanks for the advice to put my hand in their bonding pouch and cuddle them while they're sleeping! It's in my been 2 days and it's already made a noticeable difference. 😄
Just make sure you don't do it for too many hours a day as I did in the beginning (6-12 hours, every single day)...my wrist actually became inflamed lol

All of ours are as friendly as can be but at all times abyss is always crabbing like you can tell she’s not scared but she just wants to keep crabbing even during the day (snow and abyss always sleep in the same pouch) snow might touch her or kick her or something you’ll hear her crabbing. Don’t know if it’s just her personality or what
Yes, sometimes they are more grumpy. Sometimes Daisy crabbs for no reason at all. As long as they are not fighting I would not worry.
With me I put a treat on my hand and sit for 10 minutes if they don't take it its ok I just leave it with there honey and fruit bowl

I just got my gliders yesterday and they've been hiding in my sock all day. They aren't even going out to eat at least when I don't see it
It takes patience to bond and it will take a lot of weeks until you notice progress. Don't give up - you have to slowly win their trust :-)

I have such a crabby little girl we love her so much and are having trouble with nails they are long she will let us hold her.
You can purchase a nail trimming insert with most safe wheels, that will at least prolong the time in between trimmings. In case your crabby girl is a lone glider, please keep in mind that sugar gliders should be kept in pairs at least AND having a partner usually helps a whole lot with bonding. When they have a friend they feel more secure around humans and they will tend to bond faster to their human family.

Yes, they will feel more secure if they have each other. The fact that they will not feel so stressed out from being isolated also makes bonding so much easier.
I also feel like some gliders just don’t care for humans lol:) one of mine is obsessed with me while the other one couldn’t be bothered.

Yes, they all have different personalities, just like humans. I think it's great that no two sugar gliders are alike, it makes every bonding experience extra special as you have to put more effort into getting to know them first :-)
I just got new sugar gliders (two males) and their breeder had them for 3 months before I bought them and the breeder never handled them and I try to pick up my sugar gliders and they grip on to things and they don’t want to be touched ever and I’ve legit cried 4 times because it makes me sad they don’t want me and it breaks my heart

I can see you love your SG the cage is huge and you treat them like king/queens. Your very mature a pleasure watching your vids. Do the Sugar Gliders have any smells? How do you encourage them to glide?
Thank you, Kevin! Yes, they smell, but not a lot. I keep their cage relatively clean so the smell is barely there. Many say that they only smell them when they are in front of the cage and only a little even then. Intact males would have a much stronger smell and also sugar gliders kept on a bad diet or kept in a dirty cage. Personally I feel like mine smell like baby kittens, I love to stick my nose in their fur and give it a whiff lol They are already pretty good at gliding since their cage is quite big, so I don't really have to encourage that behaviour. I think a cage should be big enough to allow them to glide during the night. Sometimes I lure them with treats to glide to me, so maybe try that :-)

As with all animals, meet them on their terms and get to know each animal individually, be gentle, speak quietly, and do not punish them. Animals are not humans, and should not be treated as such....they don't like your loud music, loud friends, your loud silly laughter, or your belief in punishment. Try luring them inside a bonding pouch with treats. Mine always come to me when they hear the yogie jar, they know they're getting something yummy :-)
hi nice video! there was a company selling sugar gliders at a mall near me recently. they were trying to tell me that the only way for a sugar glider to bond with you was to get them when they are less than 3-5 months old. i do not believe this is true because i had already adopted two from people who could no longer keep them. they were several years old but bonded with me quickly and now they follow me all over the place. it occured to me that telling people this makes sure they will always buy new gliders instead of adopting. maybe that is why they were saying this. anyway please consider adopting sugar gliders instead of buying them. they will bond with you at any age if you are nice to them :)
YES! That is so sad and so true. They give out a lot of wrong info and people have no idea what they are getting themselves into when buying from them. Thankfully more and more people search the internet for information and many then see that the info they have been given is not always correct.
My Dobster was 13 years old when he came to me and he was by far the most bonded to me despite his age. It is a sad myth that they have to be young when you purchase them otherwise they will not bond.
I would love to take in more older gliders if I have the space and the money. Age is only a number :-)
Why would anyone who loves animals keep them in cages for their entire life?
hello andra my name is janie i took in 2 3 yr old females they had been thrown around to two other homes and they never had a name. well i have named them cali and lily. and i can touch them and pick them up after 1 week. they do come to me to get a treat but it is taking sometime to get them to bond. i love them and they will not be going anywhere so i will just be patient hopefully they will realize they are now loved. just wanted to see if maybe u could give a little advise to help
It is possibly going to take a while to properly bond with them since they are probably not used to being handled too much, I think. But as long as you remain persistent and bond with them often I think they will make lovely pets. A tent is great for bonding with them, many people in the U.S. do it that way. I don't have a tent, I use the bath tub/bathroom for bonding time :-)

I am about to purchase another sugar glider and was wondering if I'm about to have problems in the future. I currently have a one year old male, and about to purchase another male but this one is 4 months old. I know its going to take some time introducing them together to be able to share the same cage, but is this going to be ok or will I end up having them fighting all the time?
No, I had two boys and at first they hated each other, but after intros they were inseparable. Just make sure you have them both neutered 🙂
i am interested in having pet(never had one be4) do you think gliders will work for me?? i am 3-4 days wont be in home so i will let my brothers take care of them but we have no experience at all of having pets at all.

Do you have any tips on traveling with them? Or how to prepare for them if you are going to be gone for more than 3 days
I have a good friend that I trust and she stays at my place when I'm not home. Alternatively you can have someone you trust come daily and give them fresh water and food and leave enough dry food as a substitute in case your friend comes later and they wake up hungry.
If you take them with you, please make sure their travel cage is big enough, however leaving them in their home in the care of someone trustworthy is always the better option, because they don't have to go through the stress of travel 🙂

Not so few, but it's certainly not the norm! :-) But I'm glad your guys love you, that's pretty much what every owner wants!
If you work day shift so you can’t stay up all night and they are nocturnal, how do you find time to spend enough time with them?
You don't have to spend all the time with them, they are fine on their own as long as they have each other. On busy days I can only spend a couple hours per week with them in the evening, I try to cuddle with them while I get ready for work in the AM and spend as much time with them during weekends. The amount of time you spend with them influences how bonded they are to you, but not their overall wellbeing.
where did you buy your gliders at?
Hello Andre, is it ok to give vitamin e oil in glider food I adopted two and their fur looks funny to me
Depending on the staple diet you use their fur should stark looking normal again within weeks. Especially with the SGS 2 diet their fur will look really good really fast because of the linseed :-)
Vitamin E oil is ok as a supplement, but you do not want to overdose it when you are already serving a staple diet, so I would leave it out for a while and see if just a change in diet won't do the trick! :-)
I had a glider breeding pair. The female was well bonded and male never bonded with me, but bonded to my ex. The breeder did mention they tend to bond better with the opposite sex, not sure if this was true, but it was accurate in my experience.
Not true at all! :-D It depends on their character and the way you bond with them, not on their gender. My female and male are equally bonded to me. Then 2 other girls, Daisy and Nala, are also bonded, but not even close to how bonded my others are. It's a character thing and it also has a lot to do with how their breeder treated them (did they learn from a young age that humans are ok or where they never handled by humans).

It takes a while, don't give up :-) Try to bond with them daily for at least a couple hours :-)
So I have a problem...
I take my sugar gliders out to bond with them, but all they do is jump out of the pouch and run around the house! We catch them and the next morning they hate us for it.. What do we do?
Hey, Bethany. How can they jump out of the pouch - is it not closed? Apparently they feel very unsafe in there, is that possible? Put a piece of fleece in their sleeping pouch/or in the place they mostly like to sleep during the day. Leave it there for a week or two. Then take that piece of fleece and put it in their bonding pouch, before you put the suggies in there and see if that helps with their anxiety. When you get them into their bonding pouch, do so quietly and calmly, don't catch them aggresively - try to slowly lure them in...and make sure you close the pouch so that they can't jump out. Try not to move or speak a lot, just try to slowly help them feel comfortable in their bonding pouch and go from there. Good luck!

I got two sugar gliders and they had bad old owners that didn’t know enything about sugar glider care... I started feeding them with good diet and spending time with them.
One of them bites me but let’s me touch him.Will he stop bites me after he trust me?Im trying bonding with them everyday and yesterday the one who bites bited me and it actually hurted.
If you continue spending a lot of time with them they will eventually mellow down and even enjoy your company! Don't give up! 😊
Bonding isn't a one-time thing...bonds have to be nurtured and kept strong.

Bonding takes a whole lot of time, don't give up :-) Also make sure he has a suggie friend, I have read many times that it also helps with bonding.

What would you say is a proper treat/reward for sugar gliders?
I think they best like insects (crickets, mealworms) - but they should only eat them in moderation :-)

Question: if you have a different animal like a cat or dog should you still buy a second glider or is it okay to just get the one?
Sugar Gliders should not interact with other animals at any time and they should always, without exception, be kept in pairs or groups and never solitary :-)

In the beginning it's normal that they nip a little bit. Don't forget to buy baby Kiwi a friend soon as they should not be kept solitary for long. ❤
The bonding process is hard for me because my glider won't get inside the bonding pouch... any tips?
First win your glider over with treats, give him/her time. Then you can try to put some snacks inside of the pouch and see if he/she goes inside to eat them. Eventually, when they are comfy enough to crawl on your arm, wear your bonding pouch on you and see if they want to hide in there. Also, as also stated in the video, it is much easier to bond with them if they have a buddy, so keep that in mind as well :-)

When she says pair them - does she mean:
2 boys?
2 girls?
1 boy 1 girl?
Plus are they good with other animals?
3 very small dogs.

Hey, Terry. A pair means two, regardless of gender. If two boys, then they should be neutered. If a boy and a girl, the boy should be neutered. If two girls, then perfect. They are not good with any animals and should be kept separate from all animals, especially cats.
I might be getting 4 sugar gliders. How big should the cage be?
For 4 sugar gliders I would suggest at the very least a double Critter Nation, preferably a triple Critter Nation 😊
what is the best way to trim nails of gliders that have not fully bonded yet?. I've had mine for a week . they go on my shoulder climb up my arms and jump on and off me we're doing well but I can't seem to figure out how to get them to slow down to trim their nails
Lisa Luu has a good video on trimming their nails. I have a video on my vlogging channel where you can see the real struggle. While my boy is fully bonded, he HATES having his nails trimmed lol But, for reference, I recommend Lisa Luu's video! :-)
I read that you can put a very fine sand paper on the inside of their wheel for one night as well... in case like me you need to trim them but are still bonding and don't want to put them through that stress just yet...
I just got a new sugar glider and im trying to bond and at the same time trying to get the two get along together. How long can I let them together in one cage? They're both female, my old one is 1 year old and the new one is around 4 months. Thank you 😊😊

Ive had mine for 4 or 5 months. Hes better but still doesnt trust me as much as a bonded glider. He'll only come to me for food. Not protection

Are ur sugar gliders fixed bc Ive been looking to get one for a long time and my mom had one when she was a teen and I was wondering if I should save up to get them fixed or to not worry I would rather have a boy than a girl
Sugar Gliders should not be kept alone. So either purchase 2 girls or neuter all the boys. My boys were fixed as soon as I got them. It tones down the smell, the marking and it prevents babies. I do not want to breed or to put my suggie ladies through that process so neutering was the only way to go :-)

No, most certainly not. The great thing about animals is that they will be less judgemental than many humans and they will still love you no matter what :-)
Is it okay to take only one out at a time if you have multiple?
And can they be in separate pouches when bonding?
If they are bonded you can take them out together and keep them in a bonding pouch together. Of course you can also bond with them invididually, that's ok too :-)

Warming up to you is always a good sign :-) I think the very first good sign is when you enter the room and they don't crab at you :-D And it gets only better from then on.

can U pls give me advice? my glider is learned to be awake when its dark and when light is on she stays in 1 place and in 1 position,im trying to learn her to be awake when lights r on

Natalie Hi! Your glider has not learned to do that, sugar gliders are nocturnal which means they wake up when it is already dark and go back to sleep as soon as or shortly after they see light. This is their nature and it is healthy for them. Just let them sleep during the day and take them out 1 hour or so in the evening before you go to bed and spend time with them then! :-) Also, just in case you did not know this by now, suggies should always be kept in pairs or more so if you only have one, please purchase a partner for them soon! :-) All the best!

Natalie I have a coupe videos on this channel where I talk more about their needs, have a look at them. Their beautiful big eyes are that big so that they can see in the dark which also means they are not the biggest fans of bright lights.
That already is a big reason why it should remain this way - they sleep during the day and get up at night. Occasional playtime during the day is ok, especially if they wake up on their own, but they should still sleep mainly during the day and only occasionally during the night (they like to take naps during the night too).
I have two a girl and a boy there names are chip and Joe Joe. Joe Joe is the girl she is bonded with me and my family pretty well but chip on the other hand he will bite and make that little sound they make when they are scared so i need this tips for him.
There are no tips that work for every sugar glider. You just have to be patient and learn to read their behaviour. If they want to be left alone, leave them alone. Don't stress them while trying to bond with them. Start the bonding process slowly :-)
If I began with one sugar glider which is what I prefer, would that be okay? Or should I get a pair? I've done alot of research. I would like to know what any of you think.

They get depressed with just one... better to bond with 2 and them both be happy then to later find out you gotta introduce a new glider and bond with it too separately because the first one got sick and sad...
Ive had mine for a month and its still crabby and bites
Sometimes it takes a while until they get used to you. Be patient and bond with them daily for a couple hours. Also, please keep in mind that sugar gliders are colony animals and should have a suggie friend so, in case you are keeping only one at the moment, consider purchasing a second one very soon. Also that helps with bonding. Lonely gliders tend to be more insecure and more difficult to bond with.
i have 2 sugar gliders, one male and one female and the female adores me but the male is still biting. i have had him for about 3 months and i get scared to touch him afraid of him biting me because he has before. please help

@@hayleighhh7292 Keep them on you, inside the bonding pouch, for at least a couple hours daily. Offer a lot of treats from your hand so he learns that your hand=yummy treats and consider rubbing your hands on the bottom of the cage before handling so that you smell more like them. Frequent bonding inside a tent/bathroom helps a whole lot. Have you tried that out?

Just use operant conditioning and positive reinforcement like u would on any animal!

Thank you for your video advice.. I very much like to try all... I have a male and female. But i cant stand the male bite.. Till now i still cautious with the male. Every time i let them out of cage they will jump off and treat me like a bridge.. Hehe
