  • More info below:
    I hope this video will help you make an informed decision before purchasing sugar gliders :-)
    I DO NOT want to make it seem like they are horrible pets, because they really are not - but they are more difficult to care for than many other pets. People should know exactly what they are purchasing before rushing into buying a pet that requires quite some time and dedication.
    Some people say Sugar Gliders are not that difficult to take care of and pellets plus some instant mix are sufficient as a diet. Same people might also say that a 7 y.o. glider dies of old age...so be careful.
    Don't take my word, but don't just trust anyone either: DO YOUR RESEARCH.

    Thank you very much, Sahana K! And yes, yes, oh, FOR SURE! They use those wheels all night long despite the size of their cage. They use BOTH wheels all night long. No matter the size of the cage or how often and long they are outside of the cage, I recommend putting in at least 1 wheel, preferably a safe one. I don't know how necessary it actually is considering their cage size, but they love their wheels so much, I'd never take them out :-) Here you can read all about the good ones: sugarglider.info/housing/safe-wheels/ I have two stealth wheels and they are amazing.

    I know a lot of sugar glider owners like to talk about the downsides of sugar glider ownership but honestly a lot of these apply to owning a dog too. I have to get a pet sitter when I go out of town, I have to walk my dog several times a day, they are needy and want attention, they should be fed 2xs a day, they can be destructive to your property, they need to be trained.. I could go on. All pets require more care than you think and it's hard to know how much until you are the primary caregiver for them.

      Very true. I think the only easy pet would be a rock... Other than that...even keeping a mealworm farm requires some work :-)
      I have (had) dogs, cats, rodents, fish, birds...none of them were easy pets :-) But many people buy sugar gliders or other cages animals because they believe they are easy to keep and that's why it has to be said that properly keeping them is still a chore and requires more than a tiny cage and an apple a day as some pet stores might suggest.

      I think bettas are easy pets, but I have to keep cleaning their containers-since they love to eat and poop a lot-I was surprised when I owned my first-fish-a betta-that fish beg for food. I saw him wiggling restlessly "asking" for food-and my other bettas after him-and even goldfish wiggle around asking me to feed them.

      I think you are very wrong. The last time I checked dogs don’t need additional supplements, vitamins, specialty cage, the need to be kept in pairs, or a specialty exotic pet vet! Dogs also naturally bond with humans where the bond with your sugar glider takes a lot of work. they are also nocturnal. To compare the care of this quirky, odd, exotic animal to a domesticated dog is ridiculous. Yes, of course ALL pets require work and time but that demand certainly varies from species to species. For instance, I have two shih tzus and a parrot. My bird takes far more work and time then my low maintenance dogs! And shih tzus could be considered a high maintenance breed!

    Fantastic video. Everybody not already familiar with Sugar Gliders should watch this before they decide to get some. I had parrots quite awhile back, but had to rehome them due to some pretty severe sinus issues I developed from their down. Since the care of Gliders and parrots is similar in a lot of ways, I considered getting some Gliders. Did my homework, even visited a local breeder and did a sort of meet-and-greet with her Gliders. So glad I did because with my limitations from health issues, there is no way I would be able to care for Gliders like they should be cared for.

    I love this video and how well you take care of your gliders and there are so many useful links in your description and links you've sent to people! I'm planning on getting my first sugar glider and still in the extensive research stage. I wanted to know, is there some sort of "reccomend" cage for one sugar glider to be housed? I appreciate all informational and thanks in advance!

      Blake Orr Thank you! I think that the smallest cage for a sugar glider is the DCN. You *could* probably house them in a smaller one but I wouldn't be sure about their happiness. They love bouncing around, gliding from one side to the next. They need room for that. Bigger is always better and smaller... well they would live but I don't think they would thrive in a small environment. And this is very, very important: Please do not keep a single sugar glider. I know there are some people that say they'll be fine if you spend enough time with them but in 99.9% of the cases they will not be fine. We cannot replace suggie interaction no matter how hard we try.
      1-3 hours of playing with them does not replace a cagemate that spends the whole night playing and the whole day cuddling with them! 😀
      I'm very happy you are doing your research before purchasing! That is always a very good sign that someone is going to be a great suggie parent! 😀

    Hallo Andra~~~~
    Thank you for this helpful video! EVERYONE that wants sugar gliders MUST see this. This is REALITY CHECK. We all want them. They only have to look at us and tilt an ear and we want them. But we must care about what is best for them, not just want a cute pet. And they are not an inexpensive pet.
    I recently watched a video that left me crying. The sugar glider was making a sound I have never heard. It was wheezing and its lungs were very congested is why. The owner explained that he never took his sugar glider pet to a vet, that it had bronchitis or pneumonia and the reason he did not take it to the vet was that he figured it would die anyway.
    That glider took ONE YEAR to die. It surprised the owner how long his glider lived with bronchitis and pneumonia without a vet or medicine. It died at age 8. That means it got sick at age 7. Sugar Gliders live 12-15 years if healthy! The fact that it took his glider one year to die shows how strong the glider was. It lost 1/3 to 1/2 of its lifespan. That is like you or I dying at age 45 because we needed antibiotics and never got any.
    I don't want that to happen to any other sugar glider. I was not mean to the person in that video I saw, because I don't know him and I don't want to make anything worse. He seemed to really like his animal, but it was messed up to not take it to a vet. I hope that your video (Andra! not the sad one) is seen by anyone that wants sugar gliders for pets, because it is realistic about the cost and care.

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow, how terrible :-( Poor suggie.......yes, I'm hoping that the more people see my videos the more informed they are when they actually purchase them. Some pet stores make it seem so easy to have them as pets when it's not really that easy. It's not difficult if you enjoy it, but it's most certainly not easy...as with most pets, actually....except maybe a pet rock :-)
      So sad that the owner didn't take him to a vet, this story will haunt me for a while. I knew Dobby was going to die anyway too as he was almost 14 and I still did everything possible to keep him well for as long as possible. Speechless :-(

    Great video! I really liked all the information and your glider are very lucky to be so spoiled:)
    I was wondering about wheels. I hear different things from different people. Do you think wheels are necessary if your gliders get lots of out of cage time and they have a large cage? Do your gliders use your wheel even with your giant cage?
    Thanks and great job:$

    The reason why they like live insects are because in the wild they eat eucalyptus tree sap, they like the juice from inside the worm😅
    My glider never like supplement(the HPW or any other type of supplement, even when I mixed the supplement into their food)
    Also my one of my glider is an escape artist(we call him that). He could open any cage if there isn't any lock installed(as in the one with an actual lock not just sliding one. My glider somehow can open that kind of lock)
    He opened the door to let the entire colony to roam around the house and leaving trails of roaches/insects everywhere around the house

      It is just a matter of getting them used to their staple. Of course they will always prefer their fruits and veggies that are high in sugar and phosphorus, but of course they need a healthy diet to live a long and healthy life.
      You should try serving them only a staple diet and not serving any other snacks for a couple days until they get used to the taste. They will not starve themselves, you will see. Before they starve they will eat their healthy staple :-)
      And yes, they are so intelligent! I love that about them!! But of course it also worries me very often :-D

    *If anyone thinks this girl is just trying to scare people out of getting sugar gliders then you need to take your head out of your ass. That’s not AT ALL what she’s doing. I for one am very grateful for all her info and I have the humility it takes to say I cannot care for them (at this point in my life) I don’t have an ego about it because IT’S NOT ABOUT ME!! My life would drastically change if I got 2 gliders because that’s what THEY NEED, very special love and very special care. Her videos DID NOT SCARE ME....But they did help me realize that I love these little guys so much that I will do the selfless thing and not own any suggies unless and until my life changes to suit THEIR NEEDS!!! I hope to one day have a bigger place to hold a very big cage for them, but I’m not gonna buy them a tiny cage and watch them suffer because I’m selfish. No way!! These sweet little guys need A TON of care, Care that I simply cannot provide them with....so, I will love them enough to let this idea go unless and until my situation changes. Thanks for your videos, I’ve watched them all. And it helped make the responsible decision I needed to make to not get them right now*

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Talin! Honestly, as long as your mother does not agree with you keeping them I encourage you to wait for a while until you have your own place. As children we often try to push the boundaries and see how far we can actually go, but imagine your mother doing something you really dislike without taking your opinion into consideration. I believe that would hurt your feelings, right? If your mother decides to allow you to take them she will probably also have to help you out, no matter how sure you are at the moment that her help will not be needed. Maybe you will be very busy with schoolwork or you might be sick for a while and will need her help, maybe you need to drive to the vet and she has to take you... She won't want to help you out with a pet she didn't agree with in the first place. Since sugar gliders really need a lot of dedication, I honestly believe the best choice for you is to wait until you stand on your own two feet. That way you will be happy and your mother will appreciate you more for respecting her choice too! :-)

      It's true. If you feed them a good suggie staple (www.sugarglider.info/staple-diets/), keep their cage clean and neuter the males, then the smell is not that bad. You can barely smell them. But you will never completely get rid of it. As all animals, they have a smell. It's not a bad one if they are properly taken care of, but it's there.

    Hello. I first just wanted to say that I think you are awesome !! I love your videos an I learn a lot from you. We'll need some help. Iam very new to suggest an I'm learning. A very young girl had sugergliders an a lot a lot of other pets. She had asked me if I would take a baby due to so many pets an her sugerglider had gotten pregnant. An of course I said yes. I bought him everything he needed. An a very large parrot cage with all toys but he is very scared. Wen he is playing. He's okay he will let me come up to cage an talk with him an he don't crab but wen he is sleepin an I go to take him to bond with he crabs like crazy an if Iput my hand in his cage he really crabs an one time he lunged at me I got scared an pulled my hand back. An now he doing that more to me. I haven't been able to hold him in my hands yet I have him 2 months now he was born dec 23 I picked him up. On. Feb 1 I put him in the bonding pouch everyday I wear him around m neck for like 4 to 6 hours per day. He isn't neutered yet. I will be getting another o e in 2 weeks. I do really want him to have his own family before I neuter him Can you give me any suggestions is this normal what is happening ??

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it is indeed very normal. First of all you were a stranger to him and of course you would be very scared too if someone 100 times bigger than you would try to hold you. That creature might try to eat you! :-)
      You pulling away is a mistake. Every time you do it you condition him to do it more because he learns "Oh, that's how I get rid of her" Don't forget that many suggies don't like being held no matter how bonded they are! I have had Daisy and Nala for 1 and a half years now but them letting me actually hold them make for very rare, but beautiful memories.
      Depending on the glider's personality they can still get super cuddly in time, but sometimes you just have to learn to love them just the way they are. In your case though it is still much too soon to tell! Sometimes it takes a couple years to bond! Even Daisy and Nala can still change their behaviour so much.
      Good luck and congratulations on your second baby! I'm really happy your glider will get a friend soon - that very often already changes their behaviour in a very positive way.
      I would not breed him though, honestly, especially if the girl is still very young. If the mom is still very young she can die from caring for the joeys or reject them and let them die. Breeding unlineaged gliders is very dangerous as the babies are often sick and will be eaten by their parents. Cleaning up the remnants of a joey off the cage floor is never a pretty thing - ask any breeder that actually cares...it's very hard. So do think about it really well - in my opinion it is not worth the stress!
      All the best!

I keep him on me for 3 to 4 hours. He is comming around. But wen he's sleepin he crabs like. He gets so mad I don't wake him up but I gently touch him gent ally while he in his pouch an then I put him on me to bond but how is the best way to take him out of pouch an okay an do you think he's ready ??

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lenore, have you read this yet? I can't remember if I have already sent you the link: sugarglider.info/care/bonding/ Have a look at it, you will find many helpful tips on bonding.
      Obviously they don't like being disturbed while sleeping, so crabbing is normal when you wake them up. Whenever you open the pouch give him a treat and speak in a soft voice. Try, if possible, to make a routine for bonding so do it every day at the same time so that he kind of knows what is coming next.
      I strongly recommend you purchase a tent for playtime OR take him to the bathroom IF there are no holes where he could hide and no items that can hurt him (like razors).
      Also keep in mind Tip #9 from the suggie website "It is best to bond with gliders in pairs or more because they are colony animals. Being together makes them feel more secure, comforted, and relaxed during bonding. Lone gliders will be more insecure, lonely, and anxious."
      No matter the problem, suggies almost always do better in pairs and having a buddy also influences their behaviour a whole lot. So consider purchasing a buddy for your little boy soon (and don't forget about proper introductions).
      That being said bonding takes a lot of time and patience. Don't give up, remain CALM and always ask when you have questions.
      If I somehow oversee your comment on youtube, send me a message on facebook. I remember you have commented on our page once already. I'll be here somewhere, you just need to ask. And until then...good luck and have fun! :-)

    They live up to 15 -20 years. Not up to 5.😂

      I'm sorry, have I said they live only up to 5? I must have missed it - actually I just checked: 18:55 "they live up to fifteen years". Their lifespan is 10-15 years with good care, a fortunate few live longer than that even, but rarely.
      Can you please explain what the wrong facts are, please? I'm interested to know :-)

    Your over exaggerating about how big the cage needs to be and how much money the inside set up is. No one needs to spend 50 bucks for hammocks and pouches, you can buy fleece blankets and make your own for a couple of dollars and as for the cage if you have a glider proof room and places they can glide and get to they don't need a huge ugly cage taking up space. I'm glad people are going all out for their pets but just because you do these things doesn't mean you HAVE TOO, but yes I understand you love your pets

      So let me ask you this, then. When are they outside of the cage? Because we all cuddle with them for hours maybe each evening/night. But what happens with the rest of the time when they are awake?

      It's her money, she can spend it however she likes. I think it's nice to see how much effort she is giving to these tiny creatures; they *could* have small cage, but she has decided to be generous and give them all they ever wanted or needed. It doesn't look ugly because it's well-kempt and tidy. If you don't have a cage for them they will get lost, and there's a chance you can step on them because you've lost track of them.

    There is a reason why Mother Earth didn't create *cages* for animals.

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      spiritnphysical Yes, I know. I say the same about humans and houses :-)
      Sugar Gliders live in the wild for a maximum of 6-8 years. One of mine is almost 14 years old. Why do you think that is?

    • @spiritnphysical
      @spiritnphysical 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree.
      As to your second question- the Eco system. There is a reason they only live so long. Mother Earth knows what She is doing. Keeping them makes you happy. But does it make Mother happy? Is keeping them in alignment with Mother? The Universe has a balance. It must be kept or we start to devolve. Humans, are not balanced and no longer is the animal kingdom, and neither is Mother- ergo the 'state' of the planet.
      We have done a great disservice to the animal kingdom.
      So many are just so oblivious. Why do you think that is?
      Horrific.

      While I agree with most of your points, I do have to say us keeping these animals as pets would be the least concern mother nature has.
      Palm oil is in everything nowadays and many animals are being killed so that oil can be collected. The oil industry in general is just a terrible insult to out planet....the list goes on and on and on.
      Keeping these pets at home and taking proper care for them is truly, if you like to view it that way, actually quite respectful for mother nature. You take something that has been created by nature and cherish is so much, love it so much that it lives way beyond what is expected in nature. That is not disrespectful, that is honourable.
      Don't compare keeping animals as pets with the other horrible things humans are doing to our planet - it is most certainly not the same - except when we are talking about rare animals that are soon to go extinct.
      All the best to you :-)

      When you are connected to Mother, the answers to many things are different than the answers we come up with ourselves. Mother, does not agree with/condone, keeping animals, in cages. That is Her expression and does not come from me. I can see how you would view it as 'honourable' though. I once did as well, until She told me differently. It is a level of understanding that is acquired through experience and you may not have been through that experience yet. It is all in the learning Here.
      Now taking care of an animal long enough to return it to the wild or taking care of animal that can no longer be returned to the wild for the rest of it's life She might find honourable- (I have not asked about that one). But taking wild animals as pets She views as something that is quite selfish, imbalanced and a disservice to the animal. It creates imbalance in ALL interconnected ecosystems. Which means we disrespect Her as well. It is for us to learn to co-exist with other beings Here without forcing OUR Will upon them.
      It is a matter of being responsible and living in harmony with Her and the Universe, not forcing OUR Will on Her. She does provide the air/food/water/shelter after all. She is quite unhappy about humans keeping Her animals in cages for our own reasons when She has provided them their own habitat for a reason. Humans often think they know better than Her. She is a sentient conscious Being in Her own right. She has quite a lot to say about the way humans treat Her if we would just listen. She is in fact, quite angry with us.
      As for the oil industry- that is just 1 of millions of things we are doing wrong. But you are right about that.
      Wish you the best in your learning Here.

      spiritnphysical I definitely understand where you are coming from and I'm sure in a lot of cases Mom is pretty pissed, especially with Zoo's. Many pets however, grow very fond of their owners and get attached on an emotional level just as we do to them. This is seen greatly with dogs who see their owners after being separated for a long time. My point being, is it really wrong when they want to be with you too?
