    I’m glad to see you posting again! You were my main source of information before I made the decision to buy my pair six months ago and I plan to keep watching. I love learning more about sugar gliders and their care.
    The last myth is one of the ones that frustrates me the most! I’ve heard of people trimming their suggie’s teeth before and then wondering why they’re having trouble eating. It honestly breaks my heart!

      Thank you! ❤ Actually I used this little known fact to help me decide which vet I should go to when I first got them. I asked the vets that pretended to have seen Sugar Gliders a very, very simple question "Their teeth are super long and I would like to have them trimmed, do you offer that service and have you done it before?" "Yes, yes of course"...way too many vets have answered "yes". A sad fact.

    I am researching A BUTTLOAD about suggies! This video was very helpful! I knew most of the things you talked about but I love it when people confirm what I already know. I am getting critter nation with a wheel from exotic nutrition. Along with many many many toys and “hanging nests”. I am planning on buying an older bi fed pair from a breeder. Now I just have to save up a lot of money and convince my parents😂😉
    (You just got a new subscriber!)
    Edit- I realized that when I said “I have to convince my parents” that I sounded young. I am 13 and I have a bunny (we are getting her a friend soon since they are social animals) and a turtle. I am very responsible and I know to do my research and be calm around small animals!

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy

      May I suggest a different wheel? The ones from exotic nutrition are ok, but there are much better suggie wheels out there
      www.sugarglider.info/housing/safe-wheels/ I think the fact that you are willing to pay for your own pets already shows a lot of responsibility, I am also very happy that you are doing lots of research before purchasing. I believe you are going to make a great suggie parent :-)

    Hi I m an owner for 14 years now I had a colony almost all passed away due to old age and not my remaining glider is turning 14 in a few weeks
    The wheel you suggested is not suitable for gliders sorry
    Any wheel with either square net wheels or wheels with Long sticks in the middle is dangerous for some reasons
    Net wheel( most buy so the p and pooop goes through it to stay clean as much as possible but it can cause them to break bones if their nails are not properly trimmed the sticks if you find a wheel with one can rip off their tails and if you use a sanding paper for wheels to trim their nails it will rub on their skin and cause fungus infections)
    Silent wheels with safety caps for the tails and full on covered floors with no holes is suitable best
    If anyone is finding sleeping hard with active gliders I suggest play time 3 hours before bed and if you don't have the energy then watch a show or play a game while you let your little one run around the room (I prefer to have my whole bedroom glider safe with nothing dangerous to chew on and not a single hole they can get stuck in) not many are comfortable with the idea but I can promise you that there will be no barking at night if you let them have this much space and a minimum of 3 hours before lights out and they will be happy and the only noise will be jumping around or wheel running which shouldn't be a problem.

    so glad you are posting again, just got 2 suggies and need advice.
    i use honey as treats, but can you ever give them to much honey?
    are there any diy treats i can make for them?
    tips on toys?
    Last question, the breeder i purchased from didnt seem to be very clued up on suggies and i only realized after. she never handled them and now they are so scared and frightened of me, any advice? i use the bonding pouch often, put old clothes in there cage, give them treats as much as possible but they are terrified. when i open there cage they just try and escape and then i have to chase them around the house which is more traumatic. i try bath time bonding but they just hide away. advice?

      As fellow owner, I hope you don't mind me sharing my answer.
      I also have frigthened glider in the beggining, but usually I started to introduce myself by hand feeding my glider. Then if I want to bring her outside, I use the bonding pouch and usually put the pouch under my shirt(if I have to do my work at that day) or I just speak to my glider as if she is a new friend(this does make me like a crazy person but I do want to be bonded to my glider)
      My glider always hate bath time(after 6 years, still hate it), so I don't think it is a good idea to bond during this time
      .
      .
      What I always tell myself "gliders are small animal, imagine if someone bigger than you suddenly pick you up and poke at you. It is very scary for you, isn't it?" So do try to speak slowly(and with low voice) and gently play with them when you want to introduce yourself. It does take time depends on the personality of the gliders(one of my glider take 4 months until she gave me her approval to play with her)

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy

      First of all thank you Rania for your quick reply!
      You can give too much honey and it would not be good for their teeth or their weight (in the long run) but a little bit of honey every now and again will not hurt them. The easiest diy treat is simple dried fruit. I have a video on a mixture of dried fruits, flowers and some more stuff and they really love that so you could try it out for your suggies too - check out my other videos, one of them is on me making the mix.
      Advice on bonding...I have a whole video on that as well so please watch that. My first two were just like yours and they have adjusted really well to being handled but they are not as friendly as my other two that were handled by their breeder - but still, you can and you will "tame" them if you spend a lot of time with them. Make sure that the light is not too strong during bath time, it might be that they are simply hiding from the light. What you can do is always shake the container with treats before giving them something, do that for a couple months until they learn that when they hear that sound they will get treats and then, when you are bonding with them, take your container, shake it and they will probably come out to get some treats :-)

    Suggies are quiet: oh dear, my little chika always bark at 3am or whenever she pleased or if the colony feeling like a glutton and eat all the food before morning come.
    Suggies great for kids: oh God, please stop this. There was one time when I go to a suggies community and they told the curious people "you can give this as a present for your kids"
    Just a fact that a breeder only care about money and become the leader of the community, it was enough and I just quit.
    I remembered talking to other suggies mommy that quit the community at the same time as me and she told me that there was one time someone come to that breeder while saying "my kid drop her bag and accidentally kill the glider. Can you give me a replacement?"
    Suggies need their teeth to be trimmed: all I feel like saying to whoever say that
    "Oh honey, do you mind if I trimmed your teeth? It is too large for your face. Don't worry, it would be a quick cut with a trimmer"
    I just love talking about sugar gliders ^^
    You do forget to add: "please watch your suggies weight. While they are cute when they are overweight, it is not good for the long run"
    Somehow people just love to see them being fat and fluff that they forget their suggies couldn't even jump from one place to another

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, Rania! Overweight suggies can get very unhealthy that is why keeping them on a heathy staple diet is very, very important!❤

    Honestly it doesnt matter wether the cage is small or not, as long as the sugar glider is HEALTHY and HAPPY.

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      While a happy gliders is generally a healthy glider, a small cage means they can't use their bodies properly to exercise (jump and glide) so they can get stiff muscles or have issues with their bones which in turn means they will not remain healthy for too long.

      Hi! I am afraid I cannot give you any legal advice. I recommend you reach out to a veterinarian local to where you want to move to and ask them for advice on how to do everything the right way and how much money you will spend on that. Furthermore, try to find suggie owners local to that area and talk to them about finding the best vets, stores for suggie supplies and so on.
      Keep in mind that their safety should be your top priority in this process. Wishing you all the best! :-)

    So it’s ok to use a double critter nation right? Thinking about getting a sugar glider I’m thinking if I get a sugar glider I’ll get a pair of 3 but I might have to go 2 I have awhile to think about it though as I can’t get one currently

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, a double Critter Nation is a good cage for a small pair or trio and you can always expand it if you have some money available. Only important thing is to make sure you buy the Critter Nation, not the Ferret Nation - they look almost identical, but the bar spacing from the Ferret Nation is too wide for sugar gliders :-)

    I rescued my sugar gliders a year ago and I haven't been able to hold them, the female was sick for 2 days and she let me hold her, in fact I put her in my bra and she stayed they without wanting to get out,after 2 days she started to eat and drink, but after i put her back in the cage her mate would not will not let me hold her at all. Can I separate them so I can get her to trust me again??? HELP!!! I really want to hold them and get them to trust me. I'm afraid to let them out because I'm not fast enough to catch them, I'm in a wheelchair and it's hard for me to get on the floor if they run away. The only time they let me pet them is when I fed them hornworms. Can they live in a wood cage?

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Separating them so you can bond better is not a good idea. Can you ask a friend for assistance? Have them be around you for support if one of them needs to be put back in the cage at some point?
      I have a different video on different ways to approach them when bonding, please check that out. The fact that they are o.k. with being touched when they eat their worms is a good start!
      I would avoid keeping them in a wooden cage and those can get very dirty and smelly very fast and will also cause their coat to look dirty.

    We have been asked to take in a few neglected gliders and your info has really helped!. All 3 have amputations of either legs or tails and other deformities etc. They were a bad neglect case that are coming in. So, I have a tarantula room that we keep super warm and all my tarantula are in lockable terrariums. We are considering using the same Rom as we live in an often cold climate in Canada and we keep the tarantula room warm all the time. Can you suggest humidity levels for the gliders? Our tarantula room is a bit humid and I would hate them to become Ill or be prone to respiratory issues if they have too much humidity. They will have supervised time in all the house too though. Can they handle small temp.changes when going or hanging out in another room? Hubby and I both work from home and are night owls. Do you think having a lot of bonding and regular time will help them become used to us or do you think so much time with us and around us in the same room etc will stress them.out? We will of course start in small ways and slowly increase their handling and contact depending on their reactions, medical needs and so on. One with an new amputation of her arm and part of her tail(was attacked by a previous owners dog) will need daily meds and bandage changes and 2 males have been neutered that will.need wound cleaning. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. I will likely be back if the vet isn't able to answer day to daycare questions. The lady leaving rescue is bringing them next week so we have time to build a special cage 8'×6' with modifications for the disabled gliders. Anyway, thank you kindly for so much help. Im cramming as many videos as I can before we pick them up. Cheers and best wishes!

    • @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy
      @AwesomeSugarGliderMommy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Thank you for offering the neglected babies a new home and for being so motivated in offering proper care! 😊 I don’t measure humidity in my apartment, but I can sense it on my own skin when the air is too dry, so I always try to keep the levels high enough that my skin doesn’t hurt. Normally I let the humidifier run for an hour every day or every other day. From your description it sounds like the room you are considering might be a bit too humid. They can handle temperature changes, it’s just not wise to take them into a room that is too warm or too cold (ideally the temperature should be somewhere around/between 21°C-25°C) so you can move them from room to room as long as the room temperature is ok. Maybe for the first few weeks it is wiser to leave them alone and interact less with them until they get used to your voices and your smell and then you can gradually increase contact/bonding. It will be difficult to change the bandages of the hurt suggie, I suggest you do this early in the morning, about 1h after they went to sleep and offer lots of mealies. Maybe your vet can show you exactly how to hold them in place without hurting them so that changing the bandages can be done fast. In preparation you and your husband should keep fleece squares close to your bodies and put them in their sleeping pouches so that they get used to the new smell fast. Also try to keep a few of their old items in the new cage so they also have their familiar scent around them.
      What I would recommend is to have a lot of hammocks close to the floor area so that she gets caught if she falls from the top of the cage and reassess the situation after a month or two (see if she really has trouble moving around once the wounds are healed). Warm regards 😊

    Currently the pair of them are in a 2ft by 1.5ft by 3ft cage. (3ft high) I’ll be upgrading them soon.
    Searching for my different options I’ve found that cat cages are cheaper and bigger then rodent cages. The one I’m looking at is 3 by 2 by 5.5 ft.
    I was wondering if I were to modify it so that they couldn’t fit through the bars If it would make an good cage.

    I'm researching for quite a while about cat saliva being toxic to gliders. I have a really hard time finding proper sources for this topic. I only find people in forums say "I read somewhere" or I found one owner talking about their experience, when a glider got bit by the cat (both weren't introduced to each other, the glider escaped) & then died.
    Do you know vet-websites explaining this topic? Also why the cat saliva is toxic & in what circumstances? For example if it's only dangerous, when the glider gets actually bitten or if it's toxic even just by digesting it.
    I mean, even if owners doesn't let their cat near their gliders, the owners would've cat saliva all over them. For example just by petting the cat (cat saliva is all over cat fur), or by having cat fur on the clothes, furniture, floor etc. So, technically an owner would need every time they want to touch their glider to disinfect their hands, change their clothes (plus clothes need to be washed in very high temperature) & the glider should never put one foot in a room, where a cat had access too, plus the owner should pay a lot of attention not getting any cat fur into the glider room (by air flow f.e.). I mean, if cat saliva is that toxic, one cat hair would be a death sentence for a glider. But that is practically impossible to do...so no cat owner would be able to own a glider. Or if they do, they would risk the gliders life on daily basis.
    But I never read anywhere that a cat owner needs to be so careful...only that a cat shouldn't be near a glider. So, I suspecting it's maybe not dangerous when digesting, but only if the cat actually bites the glider & the bacteria goes directly into the blood stream. (Though I guess a glider would die from that bite wound with cat saliva or not...)
    And since you mentioned that you know some people saying that their glider & cat got along, it seems really like the saliva isn't bad for the glider just by digesting it. If it were, those gliders would be dead very quickly. But that is just my guess...I really would like to find some sources.
    Hope you can help?

      If I had to go into detail I'd probably explain it similarly to how you just have. I always try to make it a habit to say "can" and not "will" when talking about their reaction to cat saliva. I don't know of any studies but I can tell you where this whole story originated. You can actually search for it yourself, just search for "Magic Maci" on TH-cam. Already injured from a Wodent Wheel Maci got injured by a cat and the saliva got into her blodstream and it was horrible for her. She self mutilated, she was pooping blood...you can read the exact story if you watch that video. I'll be honest, I don't know of any other stories or sources regarding sugar gliders, this is just something that is being strongly advised against, especially since Maci.
      But you can do a quick Google search if you want if confirmed that even people can react badly to cat bites. And most of the forums/articles will advise against sugar gliders interacting with cats because of this but no one actually goes into detail and gives out any sources for research.

    • @TravelersGarden_dgdr
      @TravelersGarden_dgdr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the answer. I will look into Maci's Story. Ah, yes I heard that cat bites can lead to severe infection for people...I can imagine it being even worse for a tiny glider.
      When it's only dangerous when the glider gets bitten, then I guess a cat owner still can own gliders without disinfecting their whole body every time they want to handle the gliders.

      It depends on how much time and effort you are willing to invest. You have to understand that bonding with them is a lengthy process, preparing their food and keeping them clean takes time and then, of course, you need to either afford a good vet (especially for emergencies) or your guardians should be willing to financially support you. Furthermore, at your age you have many things to do and should consider getting sugar gliders only if your guardians are willing to also help with taking care of them :-)

      Awesome Sugar Glider Mommy Thanks. I am trying to bond with both of them at the same time for about 5 months now. One thing is for sure that they have very different personalities so I’m still trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t. The licking and grabbing is new and I just wasn’t sure, Yoshi, my boy is a bit harder to read sometimes, he seems pretty calm and maybe more nervous than Lucy. She is very outgoing but she is the one who if she feels threatened or uncomfortable is more likely to bite me. He had never bit but I thought it was strange that he was licking and grabbing onto me and trying to climb on me and lick and bite and she gets mad at him and goes after him when he does it and wants him to stop. I’m not encouraging it but it happens sometimes when I’m just trying to pet him or if they are out playing and I’m not doing anything he really likes my feet and hands.

    You’ve made some good points but you lacked the explanation.
    - Rodents teeth never stop growing. Suggies may look like rodents but they’re not, they’re possums. They’re teeth stop growing like ours.
    - Cats carry a chemical in their claws that can act like a toxin. If the claw breaks the skin of a small animal like a bird or suggie, the chemical can have a toxic effect and kill the animal.
    - In nature Suggies kill and eat small birds so birdie play dates aren’t advised.
    - Most animals have a “prey drive”. This is a sort of focus the animal goes into at the sight of something moving quickly. They are driven to chase and catch the fast moving thing. This drive is intentionally manipulated in advanced dog training techniques. Chase/attack is about the motion of the prey, not about smells. If it runs, it must be caught and shook! This is why dogs love catch any why they chase moving things. The dog will chase and kill a Suggie and then be sorry about it afterwards.
    - My personal experience: They can choose to emit a pungent spicy-sweet smell. Mine have no smell. I’ve even smelled myself after being pee’d on and I can’t detect an odour BUT I’ve been on another floor and detected a very strong odour that disparates.
    - Suggies are exotic pets and thus when they need help they need an exotic vet.
    - KEEP CHILDREN AWAY!!! I am a 285 lb man with forearms that are 8 inches in diameter of muscle. My 2 year old small suggie was on my forearm an inch from the floor of his cage and I needed him off. I thought I’d be clever and just rotate my arm fast. Well, he held on and I had deep, bleeding gashes from EACH of his claws on EACH foot. That was 2 months ago, I still have scars on my arm.

      The sugar gliders we have in our care are (hopefully) not wild animals as they have been bred in captivity. Furthermore, wild sugar gliders have an average lifespan of 5-7 years, while the ones in captivity live up to 15 years thanks to their "obsessed" owners that keep them safe and healthy.
