I live in a city on the west coast of Canada. When I'm by the water, I often see seals just watching humans, popping up and looking at us, then diving under, then popping up again still facing us. They seem very playful, like they're playing peekaboo.
Ben has invested probably thousands of hours with these grey seals. Trust isn't given; it's earned. Patience, repetition, familiarity. He's got a wonderful relationship with his underwater companions. In some ways, the magic of one mammal touching another mammal holds a deeper meaning than just touching. Watching the seal closing its eyes while being caressed transcends the bond between one mammal and another............just like people.
Being raised on the edge of the Pacific, it is hard to explain what it feels like to my wife when I am under the water. She was raised in the City and never learned to swim. When I was seeing this I got a strong longing for one of things I love most in life, just being under the ocean.
I'm deathly afraid of the ocean! Took me years of research and planning to get on a cruise ship. We only live once and I didnt want to extend that fear to my children so we did a snorkeling excursion and it was absolutely amazing! Im still afraid of the ocean but I have a totally different respect for it after that! I can see how pple could long to be in/under it!

As a diver, even if they did destroy his regulator, a yellow one (called an Octopus, you can spot it via the yellow hose) is always carried as a backup, or a backup for a fellow diver. Not to mention he's not even breaking 40 feet, I think, so he can ascend safely if need be.
This man has spent 20 years scuba diving so the seals have most probably been habituated to him and his crew's presence. You gotta earn wild animals' trust for sure.
There are a lot of seals and sea lions in the coastal waters of CA as well. In my experience, many of them are naturally very playful/curious. Very different than nearly every other sea creature which will either just ignore me or try and get away. Definitely the coolest things to interact with on a dive, IMO.

You in the tropical seas were lucky to have a very special fish, called a balloon fish, like Diodon Hystrix, this type of fish is very curious about divers naturally, tamable and then he follows you everywhere when he sees you underwater, because on top of that he's smart enough to remember you.
Seals and sea lions are naturally playful, so if they see you as no danger to them (and they usually do with most people), they will come up to you, check you out, and play as well. They are like the Dogs of the sea.

@@Malimber of course money is required for almost anything. But out of all the people who can afford diving equipments and training, few has such an intimate relationship with wild seals. You can buy diving experience with money, but not seals' affection.
The most amazing thing for me is that so many animals not only do show affection to man when they sense his presence in their enviroinment to be non-threatening, but that they intuitively understand how affection is expressed in human terms. In tis video, the diver extends his hand and the seals take his hand in their flippers, which appear to then squeeze that hand very much as humans do when returning love. Similarly, they seem to want to touch his face with theirs and find his diving equipment to be an impediment. My point is that in many cases, the same animals do not neccessarily repeat these same sorts of gestures when they interact with each other.
It's like the guy who saw a octopus and went back to see her everyday and she had babies and died but not until she showed a lot about her life or her species it was amazing I think it's called my octopus teacher.

He doesn't have to bottle it up and sell it, he's already incredibly rich. (In quality of life)

Without money no dive equipment ,no free time to dive. Sorry money bought this experience for him.

But out of all the people who can afford diving equipments and training, few has such an intimate relationship with wild seals. You can buy diving experience with money, but not seals' affection.

He is amazing, I’m so glad he shared his story with us.
The most amazing thing for me is that so many animals not only do show affection to man when they sense his presence in their enviroinment to be non-threatening, but that they intuitively understand how affection is expressed in human terms. In tis video, the diver extends his hand and the seals take his hand in their flippers, which appear to then squeeze that hand very much as humans do when returning love. Similarly, they seem to want to touch his face with theirs and find his diving equipment to be an impediment. My point is that in many cases, the same animals do not neccessarily repeat these same sorts of gestures when they interact with each other.
It's like the guy who saw a octopus and went back to see her everyday and she had babies and died but not until she showed a lot about her life or her species it was amazing I think it's called my octopus teacher.
