It's funny what you said about THPS feeling like a 'beta' - when the game came out, it did not feel like anything was really missing; it was incredible. That's part of the reason why THPS2 was so legendary; it just went above and beyond the original in so many ways, every feature that THPS did well was expanded upon to an insane degree. It makes sense that you feel that way if you played THPS2 first, but I can tell you that before then there was almost no sequel that could compare to how well done THPS2 was when compared to the original. Oh and I think the primary reason why video game sequels are generally better than the originals is because the development team doesn't have to spend time and resources creating an engine, they can just focus on the content of the game.
I agree, i've played in n-gage version and i was having good fun too. Maybe except first level showed in this video, on small screen was additional challenge for me. :D
Tony Hawk saying that Downhill Jam is his favorite level has the same energy as Tetsuya Nomura saying his favorite playable character in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is Xigbar. Both love the worst one.
THPS1 is the only game in the series where using Specials makes a noticeable difference to competition levels and high scores, since you are sharply docked every time you repeat a move and there are no manuals. In all the others it's pretty much how long you can keep a combo going (taken to a ludicrous extreme in the comp levels of THPS3 where all 3 have an endless loop around the levels). You make a good point about the wasted space in San Francisco and Downtown Minneapolis - whilst I like their sprawling city layout more than say, Philadelphia in 2, having to navigate a large level to complete goals unnecessarily adds to the time needed to complete them (The placement of San Fran's skate letters for example are spread out as far apart from each other as they could possibly manage). I actually quite like Downhill Jam, though I did first play it in THUG2 and it's a little easier in that since you can climb everything.
I just pulled my PS1 out of my shed. It has been stored for well over a decade and surprisingly it still works. I can't believe it! I played this THPS for about half an hour and it feels extremely nostalgic. I will see how far I can get...
I first played Tony Hawk 1 when it was a demo in GameStop at only 5 years old..so I have a lot of nostalgia for this game but I’ve always found the levels to be much more fun than 2. These days I still prefer 1 to 2 but I like 3 the best gameplay wise out of the classic games.
This was the first skateboarding video game I ever played. There was a game demo at a store and I remember playing the mall level first. One night I snuck over to my friend's house and he showed me more of THPS. When the video clip of Jeremy Wray ollieing the water tower gap played I knew I wanted to be a skateboarder. Until then I was doing both skateboarding and BMX. At the time I was slightly more into BMX, but something about that water tower ollie blew my mind (still does) and I was pretty much on my skateboard every day from then on. I actually skated Burnside in August and one of the first things I said when we got there was, "We're about to skate a video game level!" I say keep doing these types of videos, but keep the other content coming in regularly (because that stuff is incredible and the skate nerd in me really appreciates those vids). The games being strictly skateboarding is a good idea and will really set your channel apart from all the other game channels. Perhaps, when playing, you could throw in more facts about the game, about the level, about real life skate spots featured in the level, about the pro skater you're playing as (unless it's a game that doesn't have pro skaters as characters), about the tricks, about the gaps, etc. - like you did here. Learning is good. Skate on, my son.
It was my first too. I played it briefly at a friend's house, but I didn't know the controls or anything. It wasn't until THPS2 that I really got into the series. I watched the ending videos and thought they were all doing tricks from the game (instead of the other way around), but when I saw Rodney Mullen's, it blew my mind. He didn't just do some lame manual like everyone else, he did his manual with the board UPSIDE DOWN! Right then, I realized skateboarding can be whatever you want, and you can be as artistic and creative as you want with it. Thanks for the tips - will do! I do these on Mondays before a game review right now. But I've got tons more of the research stuff coming very soon.
Rad Rat Video - That's awesome. One of my old friends got into skating because of the Rodney Mullen videos in the THPS games. I actually got THPS2 for the computer and played that every day after school before heading out to skate. I would go crazy with the keyboard - doing insane finger movements so the game characters could do insane skate combos. I didn't even own THPS until a few years ago when I bought it for a few dollars along with a cheap PS1. The Minnesota level has always been a favorite of mine. That and the school from THPS2.
Downhill Jam was one of my favorites playing THPS1 on the N64 :) I liked it because you had to memorize the route and tweak it so that you could do all the tapes in one run. It was a puzzle. But I did that for all the levels. What made Downhill Jam special was how the planned run flowed.
Rad Rat Video Yeah, within the context of THPS2, almost everything about THPS1 felt backwards. But you did a good job talking about that in the video :)
Wait this game has actual live skate videos? I had no idea. I've only played the N64 version and honestly had no idea there were whole songs that were cut either. I just barely found out a few months ago that Police Truck wasn't an instrumental and actually has lyrics 🤣
i really enjoy watching these. it would be cool if you could somehow do a review of Top Skater. i know it wasn't much of a good skate game but the gimmick of getting to stand on a board was really fun.
Man I've thought about that, and if I ever actually see a copy of it, I'll definitely have to record some gameplay. Haha, thanks. I'm not surprised she did one, but all I remember off the top of my head is a 2 inch high nollie heelflip.
I tend to agree with you on THPS1. I received it as a birthday present about 4 months after it came out, and I loved it. But when I got THPS2 for dream cast I never went back to 1.
In defense of THPS 1, just by beating the game repeatedly through every character will make you figure out how to literally one-shot every single level. With 11 characters, you will basically have at least understood how to get through each level as easily as possible. Afterwards, freeskate to figure out the best combos or gaps to help take the pressure off of competitions and pro scores. It made everything simple to understand and easy to combo all of the objectives together.
Great video! Love your game reviews and I agree with a lot of points oyu bring up. Tony Hawk Pro Skater was a series I grew up playing but haven't played in years. So, it's great to know that their is a huge online community of people who love the games.
Yeah, I've seen all your reviews. What I meant was I didn't know their was a huge online community until a month or so ago lol. i feel like I'm behind on the times.
I was in high school when this game came out. Prior to the release of Tony Hawk 1 it was featured on one of the PlayStation underground disks. I had the demo disk and me and my friends would play the crap out of it everyday. The week it came out, out of nowhere my uncle surprised me by sending it to me in the mail out. I literately freaked out when i opened the package. Since I was the only one that had it, everyday after school there would be at least 5 - 10 people at my house just to play this game. We would all chip in on a few bags of pot, get stoned, then play 2 player paint mode which was my favorite mode. Each time a player did a trick on a ramp, grind, or combo on a ledge it would paint it your color. If the other player got a higher score on your colored ramp, or ledge it would change it to your color. The team with the painted objects won.
Soo many good memories playing this as a kid haha. My college buddy had an N64 in his dorm and I got good enough to go through this game in 45 min-1hr.
THPS4 was my favourite growing up. Think 3 was the peak, but I just preferred 4 overall. Great content, like these bts laid back style videos as well man. Look forward to future content mate.
Hey man do you have any knowledge on the Illusion flip? I mean its basically a Hardflip but with a body rotation.. any clue as to which came first? Illusions are usually seen on ramps but Muska is known for doing them flat (sometime called Muska flips) was he the first to do them flat? Really interesting in knowing thanks
Danny Way and Matt Hensley have a shared part in Hokus Pokus from 1989. Danny does some in a mini ramp. A year later, Ali Mills does one on flat in Useless Wooden Toys. I can't say for sure who did it first though.
Thanks for the information man you are always dropping names of great parts to watch. Being from Australia the popularity of parts from names like New Deal and Osiris is unheard of. In fact video parts themselves dont really sell as i imagine they would in the US.
I don't know, I only heard about this stuff years later with the internet. I was just learning how to walk in 89, so I don't know how big that stuff was at the time. I'm glad I could help though.
My brother got a ps1 for Christmas in 1999 with a bunch of games. This game being one of them. I was 4 when it came out so I can't remember much of it. I like this style of video. I would love to see you do the same with the ea skate franchise. I would love to hear your thoughts on the hardcore setting on skate 3, that's the only setting worth playing on once you get the hang of it. Good stuff RR
I'm going to get to Skate, but I want to play through the games I already have. I originally played Skate 1 and 2 on 360, but it died and now all I have is a PS3, so I'll have to rebuy the games eventually. I love the hardcore mode. I still fire up Skate 3 every now and then and do some lines with it.
+Rad Rat Video okay that's excellent to hear. Since skate 3 is now available on the Xbox one my friends and I have been playing it together at any chance we have. It's too much fun having games of skate or even just seshing a small park. Brings back awesome memories.
I absolutely will. I want to review all the stuff I own first, then I'll get a copy and review it later. Yeah, that would be cool. maybe combine 1 and 2.
I will! I want to review the Tony Hawk series in order, so that it's easier to notice all the new stuff in every game. So I'll get there, but it might be a while.
This was huge when it released. For me anyways.. The series got waaaay better but at the time there weren't many skate games. It was just Street Sk8er and Top Skater at the arcade. It's crazy how influential the early TH games were. THPS2. I wonder which is the best version? I had the Dreamcast version when it was released and it looked great but the Xbox version is expanded on.... Which I am now tempted to play.
The Xbox version is great - I'd go with that if you can. I have a full review of THPS2 coming out next Tuesday and I talk about all the different versions there.
Rad Rat Video Fantastic. I use to play all the Tony Hawk games, religiously, but haven't touched or seen them in over a decade. Wait.. I did pick up Tony Hawk 9 in 2008 for like $5. Did *not* have a good time. In retrospect, I probably didn't enjoy it because of my obsession with Skate 1. But I look forward to your video and some good ol' nostalgia.
Worst level in Tony hawk?? I loved downhill jam. 😪 the rails are so satisfying to hit. It's my absolute favorite. When you do a perfect run with all the combos you wanted it's the best feeling ever.
No way, I can't stand it. Especially trying to get the secret tape! I just don't like having to do everything in order instead of being able to move around freely. Downhill Jam and the Mall are my least favorite levels of all time.
Thps 4 was the last thps where you actually skated. Not long ago I went into a nostalgia spree and tried playing thug after playing thps3 (which is my favorite) and man it was hideous with all that running in the middle of combos. Speaking about bad nollie flips remember Nyjah in Elementality :)?
Yeah, for sure, and the story mode too! The older games are much more replayable because you don't have to watch Chad Muska roll up in his Escalade every time you start up the career. Haha yeah I do, but he was the same height as his board, so I have to give him a pass.
Elissa steamer can actually tre flip what do you mean 😂 have you seen any of her street parts so actually fucking shreds like come on don't dog on her like that she good enough to go pro and she deserves it come on
Sexybathsalts Hahaha. I was getting uncomfortable watching this with my girlfriend in the room. Getting butt hurt and then leaning on a little sexism for support? Come on, man. You're better than that. XD
the point of the game is semi realistic skating . not missions. they had to put some kind of missions because its a mainstream game, they couldnt just make it free skate with no 'beating the game' or anything. i agree with Tony its a video game, the ultimate fantasy is flying down insane hills going off ski jump -mega ramps. it would be boring if every level was totally reasonable.
It's funny what you said about THPS feeling like a 'beta' - when the game came out, it did not feel like anything was really missing; it was incredible. That's part of the reason why THPS2 was so legendary; it just went above and beyond the original in so many ways, every feature that THPS did well was expanded upon to an insane degree. this game change millions of lifes lol, whether by the soundtrack or the fun game play

Yeah, I've seen all your reviews. What I meant was I didn't know their was a huge online community until a month or so ago lol. i feel like I'm behind on the times.
congrats on 2000!!!
Thank you!
Lol
That happens a lot with music, too. A band's sophomore effort (2nd album) will be their best.
You have one of the best skateboarding channels on TH-cam. Definitely enjoy these preview videos before the reviews keep it up man
Thank you!

3:14 "Switch nollie" :D
THPS4 was my favourite growing up. Think 3 was the peak, but I just preferred 4 overall. Great content, like these bts laid back style videos as well man. Look forward to future content mate.
Downhill jam is a fun level, because it's fast pace, has huge gaps and huge airs.
this was the very first video game i have ever played. i really want to play this game again
I remembered this game has one of my favorite song of all time. Jerry was a racecar driver by Primus

Stats in Pro Skater are upgraded when you unlock new boards
Talking about that Garret Ginner vid, huh.
Are you gonna make a series on EA's Skate franchise?
Wish they'd make a new one, at least a 60 fps version of Skate 1 would be cool
I absolutely will. I want to review all the stuff I own first, then I'll get a copy and review it later.
Yeah, that would be cool. maybe combine 1 and 2.
you should review tony hawk's proving ground and project 8!
I will! I want to review the Tony Hawk series in order, so that it's easier to notice all the new stuff in every game. So I'll get there, but it might be a while.

I wish activision could release the classic tony hawk’s on mobile

Sexybathsalts Hahaha. I was getting uncomfortable watching this with my girlfriend in the room. Getting butt hurt and then leaning on a little sexism for support? Come on, man. You're better than that. XD
Sexybathsalts yeah, but of all the skaters in that contest, like Tony Hawk, Jamie Thomas, for Elissa Steamer to win? Like, really?
I actually prefer this than THPS2.
do american wasteland
The informal gameplay videos are so comprehensive I don't find much motivation to watch your formal reviews.
are u kidding Downhill jam is the BEST level in tony hawk. but i dont do the challenges.. i just skate it.
the point of the game is semi realistic skating . not missions. they had to put some kind of missions because its a mainstream game, they couldnt just make it free skate with no 'beating the game' or anything. i agree with Tony its a video game, the ultimate fantasy is flying down insane hills going off ski jump -mega ramps. it would be boring if every level was totally reasonable.
Tony Hawk doesnt like downhill jam he said it was put in because he was kinda forced.
Haha worst level ever must be shipyard.. come on.. both the missions and layout sucks so much😂
Talking trash on steamer when she’s better than you? Ok bud
