- Finally made it up to Tony Hawk 4, which came out way back in 2002. I remember this game being amazing, but is it still good after all these years? Let's take a look.

Thps 4 is my fav! Love the bad voice acting, it's what makes it funny and fun. This game introduced me to skating in someways and i've been skating, watching skate videos and playing skate games ever since.
same here man
Same!
same here
Rare opinion here but I prefer 4 over 3 actually
Demon Rantz same
Mee too
Me too, i like the open world skating. And the maps are insane! So big.
Agreed
Me too thps 4 is my fav!
THPS 4 was definitely my favourite regarding gameplay, maps and music...hell i discovered so many good hip hop artists through the thps games...nostalgia :]
we play Oldschool I enjoy THPS 4
@sugnuM hguH I still listen to kareem campbells song for this game, bad dreams, all the time. its so amazing
hip hop artists? You mean Less Than Jake, right? 😁
I am actually so surprised that only one person said their favorite game was THPS4. This is my favorite Tony Hawk game by a mile. (I love THUG2 as well) I'm a bit of a completionist and I love how all the money adds up perfectly to 100,000.00. It's great when a game heavily rewards you for getting everything in it. It was the first Tony Hawk I played and since then I've played the rest as well. But this game taught me to play. The goals are progressively more and more challenging and it was as if they knew exactly where my level of skill was at any given time. On top of that I loved the level design. I never felt like I was travelling anywhere because I could combo on my way there or just get lost comboing. Some challenges were insanely hard for me as a kid and when I beat them I felt amazing. I was so sad when it was coming to an end and then when the pro challenges came out I was so happy. I loved even finding all of the gaps. Gaps are pretty sick in my opinion because you can't see them so they make you see the world full of wonder. I didn't mind taking a day or more to get everything in a level before moving on to the next either, that was how I played and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had as a kid. it's a shame other people don't see this game the way I do I think it's one of the most well put together games ever made. I place it in my top 5 next to Ocarina, Banjo, Fez, and THUG2. (All collectathons lol)
I feel the exact same way. You gotta understand, most people view things through nostalgia goggles. THPS4 was not the first one i played, nor was it the last, but its easily the best. I just bought a Gamecube to replay all these games, and i understand why so many love 3. Its practically perfect for that arcade formula. But 4 is just bigger and better in every way.
For how long you tried to beat that stupid pool party pro challenge ? LOL
"Collectathons" lol. The past yr I've been playing games of that sub-genre, I remember playing DK64 back then and hating it because how much of a grind it was, but I decided to replay it now cause of how much I love collectathon games and I've read so much about how it's the ultimate collectathon game. And it did not disappoint, I love it now. Idk something zen about just going around collecting shit for completionist reasons lol.
Anyways you should play it or replay it if you haven't recently. :)
THPS4 was the much needed bridge between THPS3 & THUG. Great video.
defs seems like the bridge game...I never played 4
@@Matanumi Its the best of the series. The later games were good, but they were too over the top, and they lost the essence of "pro skater".
Not as good as american wasteland though
@@ZyFanatic bro you are capping
@@darkcut2056 lmfao no sir THPS4 was so underdeveloped
Personally, I love that they added stories behind the goals. The humor behind them feels absurdist. Like "Oh no! X-Disaster happened! Use your Super Skater powers to save the day!" For example, I found letting a zookeeper escape a lion's cage by blowing away the lions with an awesome combo to just be hilarious.
Yeah. The humor was intentionally aiming at that vulgar, absurdist kind.
Does no one remember the gamecube edition? Dont be sleepin on my favorite console
Simple YES. I still love this game, and in my opinion it is the best part of THPS.
Good gameplay, maps are quite big and interesting, music is awesome.
This will always be MY Tony Hawk game. I have the most memories with it, like playing split screen with my dad. One of my childhood games ❤️
nah, it’s MY tony hawk game actually, not yours
It's OUR Tony Hawk game
THPS4, the game that got me into skateboarding, I still play it sometimes on my old ps2 :)
Also that Muskabeatz part was as unexpected as it was awesome!
In this video you say, regarding buying stuff in the store, don't over do it because you have to buy the last two levels. I did an experiment to see if I could lock out one or both of the last two levels. I absorbed all the money I could from every level (including Practice) and the Pro Challeges and spent all the money on Decks, Skaters, Clothes, Movies and Cheats before getting the Levels. Turns out theres enough cash in the game that you can't lock out the Carnival and Chicago for the save file.
haha! I'm glad you brought up Muskabeatz. My friend was into Muska like I was into Mullen. Both of us liked underground hip hop due in large part to skate videos. The day he found a Muskabeatz album at the local skateshop was like Christmas 2.
And I did not know about THPS4 for ps1. It's kind of funny, sad, and impressive that they kept using that old THPS2 engine but that also makes me want to play it. I wonder if the TH3 (and up) engine is an updated version of the old one or brand new?
Thps 4 honestly would be my favorite if they never made THUG.
Same. It was my favorite until THUG came out.
Its fun if you play it with friwnds or somethung
THUG’s the best
Currently replaying it, still great and one of the best soundtracks of gaming history.
Bad voice acting?! I bet they fixed it in Underground...
ummm what about mayor jed in tampa?
Lawless individuals!
Wallride the stickers lol I remember when I first heard that!
AmishSaiyan STICKERS EVERYWHERE!!!
*Ooooooh* Mayor Jed's pisssssseeed!
This game is a masterpiece, just finished replaying it, made all 190 goals, and it is the hardest thps game of all.
How long did it take you?
4:07 this clip triggers so many memories for me. Thps4 has to be my favorite game of all time, hands down. I probably logged like 1200 hours in this game growing up.
It's the second best game in the series for me. The best is Underground IMO :)
Same bro
Same with me. :)
You're normally right, but I think you were a wee bit too hard on THPS4. It's still a classic, very lovable game. I probably spent more time playing it than any other.
Marathoning the series right now, and I'm definitely prefer 4 over 3. You never get bored because you do something new everytime, challenges getting harder and harder, while in 3 if you beat the game once, there's not much to do, and there's no real challenge. I have no intention of playing the same levels 20+ times just to unlock Neversoft character. 3 is good, but only for a couple of days. 4 I 100%-ed tho
3, 4, underground, underground 2, and american wasteland are still amazing games IMO
I’d agree with almost all of that but I’d replace American wasteland with 1 and 2 or at least 2. I don’t know I never liked American wasteland it was the start of me not liking the games anymore but I’m glad you enjoyed it
4 was definitely my favorite - I don't mind the acting and I liked the trick variety even though it's unrealistic.
Some of the best experiences I have ever had gaming were playing THPS4 Online. I learned so much and had a great time with the different games available. There was also a chat that was displayed right on the screen. Ahead of its time really
Just picked up this game for $2.99 at Goodwill for the PS2. I played the original on Xbox, but this is still going to be nostalgic.
So stoked you mentioned Aggressive Inline. Fun game.
Yeah, I loved it!
Too bad it only had like 6 different songs, it could have used a bigger soundtrack
Fanchus love the profile pic. amazing album
Underground was definitely my favorite. I even liked underground 2 although it was super over the top. Great review man, can't wait to see more.
If you were a kid when this came out you remember how life changing it was lol. On the PS2??? Changed the game forever.
I had it for my gamecube cuz my brother gave it to me my ps2 almost always had xmen legends in it lmao
Thps4 was the first game I bought when I got my ps2
This was also my first PS2 game (along with 4 other games) when I first got a PS2 back in Christmas 2002.
I absolutely LOVE the voice acting and cutscenes in this game. I think it's humor and enthusiasm still holds up. In THUG the voice acting seems to be lacking enthusiasm and in THUG2 the humor feels so cheesy and bad.
I love your channel. This is really weird you didn't get many subs.
They will come, don't worry!
almarcToGether 3k is getting somewhere
Thank you!
This is my favorite and the one I go back to most
I prefer to play all Tony Hawk games on the PS2 because of the dpad
I am loving that Patrick Rothfuss in the background. A Wise Man's Fear is one of my favs
Aggressive inline was SO good! Sucks it never got a sequel. Very underrated game. My favourite TH still has to be Underground. Do you think TH would ever have a remake and try to bring back the hardcores?
Ice bears left and I was worried I wouldn't be able to find another pro skater TH-camr but alas. Looking forward to more great content.
One thing I wish you would've gone over, but totally understand why you didn't, is all the glitches this game had and what you could do with them. All the float glitches where you can float and literally get billion point combos. All the glitch parks you could build and share, some made for some surprisingly fun skating, or just funny weird outcomes. The weird career challenge glitches where you can make the game think it's in a challenge, but it really isn't, so you could luge or shopping cart anywhere in those respective levels. Tons of weird results from start/stopping all the different challenges. Tons of out of bounds glitches. The small online community built around finding and doing all these quirky things. This was definitely my favorite Tony Hawk because of all the fun I had doing these.
Ahhh my first ever Tony Hawk game. The nostalgia
Another great review. I grew up with THPS1 and 2 but I always find myself going back to 4. I loved the addition of the double tap moves and spine transfers in 4.
This was always my favorite...now I'm curious if it'll hold up for me
4 was my favorite. And until like last week I had no clue how to unlock the aquarium in the zoo and that kept me from 100% the game back in the day
Great review! not bad for a revisit. I'm on board with your other subscribers for Tony Hawk's Underground. From its release in 2003 I had this for Christmas at the time at 8 years old. It was my very first Tony Hawk and Skateboarding game, the gameplay blew me away for what type of game it was and especially for a Xtreme Sports game. However standing apart from its predecessors it is what you define as a Skate-Adventure game the start of true Story-based Skateboarding game of the franchise and the genre itself. The game hit all marks out-of-the-park 1) Soundtrack (probably the best Video Game Soundtrack no games can compare on the musical score) The best of Rock/Punk & Rap/Hip-Hop. 2) An underrated video-game villain (Eric Sparrow). 3) The massive levels in cool locations (I don't know why but New Jersey was my favorite especially with the Juggernaut track in the background) all were great. 4) The pacing of the playthrough story was great to me. 5) getting off your board (I had not realize the big deal of this at the time until I had officially got my first ProSkater Tony Hawk Game (THPS4) for the PS2 which felt like a mixup having THUG 1 for the XBOX and THPS4 for the PS2. Upon playing Pro Skater 4 after each time I played THUG I noticed the obvious differences, it overall didn't feel that much of a better game than THUG I had concluded and give noteworthy thumbs for the development of THUG after ProSkater 4 to start the new direction of the games. Pro Skater is cool and all because it focused on the combo-button mashing actions per-minute scoring gameplay but didn't give a player a purpose or agenda when playing the game. Overall it's still the great introduction to the famous game Franchise. Ever since then I place THUG as my very best memorable video game experience in my youth especially before the Online Gaming Era, back then it was just me and my brother in-front of our TV with the wired plug-in controllers on split-screen mode for offline multiplayer sessions challenging our Skating Skills for combo-execution and scoring the most by the timer.
I hated thps 3 on psx, but thps4 on psx for me was amazing. It was like like playing thps2 but with reverts, spine transfers, pivots and one wheel manuals. You also forgot to mention the extra stages it has that aren't in the ps2 version. To me THPS4 on psx was almost everything i dreamed of doing on thps2 when i still couldn't afford a ps2 for the newer tony hawk games.
I liked it too and enjoyed more than ps2 version! Underground is still my favorite Tony Hawk game!
The only thing I didn’t like about THPS4 on PSX was you can’t unlock new normal tricks. You could only unlock special tricks.
zukodude487987 THPS 3 was the best game in the series you God damn cotton headed ninnymuggin.
I thought thps 3 on psx was pretty good not thps 4 psx is ok imo
I'm playing 4 right now and I don't know if I should like it because it's challenging or hate it because the movement is so clunky and frustrating. I tried turning autokick off but that's also not optimal, so I guess I gotta get used to the speed and difficulty of the game.
So far I made it to Alcatraz with lots of swearing and holding me back so that I don't destroy my controller.
That Muskabeatz album is firee
I personally found it the most challenging out of the lot....and had some excellent levels
I adamantly disagree with anyone saying Pro Skater dropped off at 4. I put more hours into Free Skate in the first two games than i did playing career.
Telling me that I could do a challenge whenever I was ready for something specific, and could have as much fun as i wanted in the meantime was perfect for me.
'The levels take forever'? M8 i could PLAY this game forever!
I have nothing but respect for this game. I used to play this game on a daily basis when I had my PS2. I currently own THUG, THUG 2 (XBOX), American Wasteland, Project 8, & Proving Grounds (360). It's really cool watching these videos because it reminds me that I can play these games at any given moment.
I grew up playing all these Tony Hawk games on PC.
Props for giving Aggressive Inline a shoutout! Loved that game!
Just got this version and it's playable on the 360, can't wait to play it again.
i played this game in the day and still do its one of the best tony hawk games and very very worth playing
The escape from Alcatraz mission was so hard!! It took me days to do that challenge!
Fair take, but as a 12 year old boy who had played THPS1-3 to death, THPS4's tedious goal system and extremely long gameplay was like a dream come true for me. It kept me entertained for like an entire year, especially with the net play.
FUCK YEA MUSKABEATZ that was good shit
I used to watch my older twin play pro skater 4 all the time, boy those were the days
@RadRatVideo been wathcing your channel for about three months now. keep up the great content!
Thps 4 is my favorite!!! Probably because it's the only game in the series i played
Actually I played underground and it was good but I would still prefer thps 4
I love these reviews. Do the whole tony hawk series.. I also played these games since thps3 and that was my favorite. THPS4 was just really different from 3.
3, 4, and THUG are all atop my list of Tony Hawk games, but it's tough to compare them due to their extreme variance in formats. That's why I consider all of them the best of that category (classic 2-min runs // open world // story). Yeah, 4 may the only game in that middle category, but I enjoyed it so much that it deserves mentioning.
I'm excited for tony hawk's underground review. Anyway, Great review.
I feel I was the only person who didn’t like this game very much I remember getting it at the same time as thug and that was a mistake because once I played thug this game never got touched again I wanna try it again now that thug isn’t clouding my judgement on it
The catch is you cannot save replays on the non-PSX versions. The PSX version allows you to save replays, even on Career mode.
If they removed the end of goal spam where they would tell you that you unlocked a new stat point or trick or ask if you want to save your game, then this would be my favorite Tony Hawk game. With this it makes the game feel a lot slower.
THPS4 is my fav, spend days on reservoir doing just the one combo, trying to perfect it lol
so many reviews talk down on the stuff i really enjoyed about these games. its what made them stick out
I think the bad acting is great cause its supposed to be campy and being goofy
This was my first skating game. Loved it as a kid, but I don't think it aged that well...
For that challenge at 8:50 you can go to the top of the building and use the half pipes instead of doing just flatground
still good after 15 years I love thps4!
This is a really fun game but since I didn't play it until much later it always feels like more of a stepping stone to underground rather than its own thing.
My favorite thing about thps 4 was getting to play as Eddie, the mascot for Iron Maiden
THPS4's my favourite. Or maybe thps3. I dunno.
You should do a video on wall rides. :3
Are you the Blues Clues guy?
I loved that baseball mini game.
As a kid my only gripe with 4 was lack of replay mode
Why does everyone totally ignore the NGC version
ikr that's the version I played
This was my favorite THPS game until underground. Both were amazing. I would ranked 3rd place with THPS2
fun fact: polish release of THPS4 includes 9 extra songs by polish rappers.
New Title: Guy complains throughout Skateboarding game and argues graphics make a game instead of gameplay. I'm outta here man
I miss pro skater 4 that was the first one that made me fall in love with the series all the way up to thaw I loved I did like project 8 tho but not as much as thps 4 all the way up to thaw those were the golden era of tony hawk games in my opinion
This one hits me right in the childhood
I respect your opinion, bro....I've played the PS1 version of 3 and 4, and they were pretty good...not as good as the PS2 version, but it's pretty good and decent, and to be honest, I've played the PS1 version only, because I didn't want to leave the PS1 behind, but when Underground came out, it was time to step outta my comfort zone and step up to the plate. when I got Underground, I felt in love with it, not because of the characters, levels, and the new mechanics...but it's because of the story, starring your created skater, and the soundtrack is astounding good! I love it!
Thps4 on ps1 was the first skaterboard game i played.
tnt and shimmy are some of my all time fav songs because of thps4
in my opinion my favorite game in the series is thps2 but I feel that pro skater 4 is underrated since not too many people mention it when referring to their top 3-5 games in the series. Most of the fan favorites in the series when brought up are THUG, Thps2, and Thps3
@4:15 is my local skatepark, or at least when i first started going back in 2000. unfortunately theyre closing shop end of the month. #skatelab
I think for most people who grew up with these games, their favourites are going to be the games they actually played a lot of growing up. For me that was 4 and underground 1. Being accustomed to these more open stage games made the earlier ones harder to transition to and I've never really been able to get used to them and really enjoy them, playing them for the first time as I've gotten older. Not to say they are any better or worse, especially since I haven't really sunk all that much time into those games. Perhaps it's just for nostalgia's sake, but I'll always prefer the two aforementioned games. As for the bad acting, I'm a total sucker for it. In my opinion it gives the games a certain character and charm. The game would feel a whole lot emptier without it, I'll say that much. Also, drunken lullabies is probably the best song in the whole series. They nailed the soundtracks for these games.
My favourite is honestly Thug 2. I used think it was one of the worst Tony Hawk games when I was little, but now that I've grown up I guess I've finally learned to appreciate it. The goals are very varied and are a nice blend between the goal list from the old games and the "talk to people for a mission" from the newer ones, and the difficulty scaled up well when playing on Sick, something that THAW and THUG doesn't do that well.
The gameplay is probably the best in the series as well. It improves on features from THUG, like making off-board controls smoother, and it also adds a lot of cool features (focus mode, flips and rolls, natas spin, grafitti is a bit meh though) while not going as overboard as THAW. One thing that's bad though are the special characters in the story mode. They just don't control all that well (biggest culprit is definitely Steve-o).
I don't have much to say regarding level design because of how hard it is to compare it between the games, but I'd say they're quite good. It's a nice mix between the unique and colourful levels from THPS4 and the city-level designs from THUG.
The soundtrack had a nice mix between old school rap, punk, metal and alternative rock so you're guaranteed to find at least one song you'll like. Kind of hard to say if it's the best one though, since music taste is very subjective.
I'm not too much of a fan of the Bam humour in the game, and the story isn't really much to write home about, but overall I'd say the game is quite under appreciated.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4 are my favorite Tony Hawk's games along with Underground 1 and 2... I was 7 in 2001 and 8 in 2002 and I always played them... I had them on PS2.... but I don't have a PS2 anymore
but right now I want to get them on Xbox so I can play them on my Xbox 360 that I still have and relive my childhood nostalgia 🤩😍.... hopefully until they get Remastered
THPS3 was my favorite followed by American wasteland
thps4 is my favorite hated the previous ones of having a timer now you could just chill and freestyle every level, and it was so easy to restart a challenge
i loved playing thps4 online. it was how i spent my entire summer '03 because my ankle was busted
Every game from THPS 2x all the way up to American Wasteland can be played on XBOX 360 with backwards compatibility. 🛹
Thanks now I have to go game hunting for them for my 360 lol... I had them on PS2 but I got rid of it a decade ago lol
Rat Rat! Has there been anyone who has landed a 360 toe flip? Because we debated at school about it LOL. Love your vids.
So...no create a skate park mode? I thought that started from underground
my Tony Hawk history goes as follows: THPS2 on pc, THPS 3&4 on xbox, Thug on Ps2, Thug 2 on ps2, Thaw on ps2, Project 8 on ps3 or xbox 360 i can't remember, proving ground on ps3. Thug is my favorite game overall, but thaw had my favorite gameplay mechanics and added tricks.
Is this game 60fps in 720p mode as well or does it cut it in half?
The best "Pro Skater" series.. I played like hundred of hours in this game.. Wish that I can wipe up my memory just so I can play this game freshly..
i use to play this a lot... and i mean a lot... my friend refused to play with me cuz one of their runs would take 2minutes and mine would take 30-45minutes only ending because i got tired in my fingers... this game was straight up broken and you could go on forever if you could cancel animations at the right times...
no offense you should have done this on it's 15th birthday but that would take along time to wait for, and great review
