    Yeah, I worked on this game. The review is totally fair. I remember the E3 before we released there was a huge line of people around our booth on their way to play Tony Hawk. Our line wasn't very big. Everyone loved crashing so that's all they did. Skaters loved the game but that didn't help it sell very well. Eventually this turned into the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX series which reviewed pretty well, Aggressive Inline (which reviewed even better), and BMX XXX which kinda took a direction of its own and sold poorly (because stores refused to sell it). If you haven't played any of them, you should check them out.

    • @SquareEyedJak
      @SquareEyedJak  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Interesting to hear. I can only imagine that must be crushing after working hard on a project to see the line for a competitor do so well. But I think this game still has a great legacy. Had A LOT of people tell me they love this and yeah, it's the legacy of the game. We may not have had SKATE without this and now sim skaters rule the current market for the genre.
      Thanks for the comment!

      Congratulations on helping create a solid engine that spanned multiple action sports and even multiple console generations. BMX XXX may have sold poorly but goddamn does that game still feel fantastic to play.

      Caddy didn't realize that he has to score a set amount before he leaves the level, but you can risk it and do more tricks during the time you are being chased, since it adds a trick multiplier, meaning you can get a higher score before you escape.

  • @kev6378
    @kev6378 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Absolutely love this game. The difficulty curve is much appreciated when compared to THPS, personally. But I also understand why someone wouldn’t care for it. Thrasher needed a sequel to refine the kinks/clunkiness. There’s a perfect skate game somewhere in those mechanics. It’s a shame they shifted focus onto BMX after this game.

    • @ChaseMC215
      @ChaseMC215 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave Mirra is probably to blame for this. He had already dropped out of the third BMX game Acclaim Sports had, which would become BMX XXX, promotional material still had his name on it despite him telling Acclaim to remove it due to him not wanting to be involved with it, but they proceeded to push his luck by keeping his likeness in advertisements, leading him to actually SUE Acclaim because of that. They did settle the lawsuit, but it was kinda too late for Acclaim, considering they were losing money, and one of their best games they had published was Burnout 2, that game didn't save them from declaring Chapter 7 Bankruptcy.

    I remember I heard of this game by watching RadRat and his skateboard game reviews and eventually found it at a retro game store. My friend and I popped it in and the two of us were HOWLING in laughter at the rag-doll physics in the game! We were not expecting the character to just go FLYING across the map after getting hit by a train in the subway level and we were like doubled over laughing at it.
    Also was a fan of the soundtrack, making up for the lack of hip-hop in the first THPS; I can never get enough "Rapper's Delight" and some other catchy tracks from A Tribe Called Quest, EPMD, Grandmaster Flash, Gang Starr, Public Enemy, and Run-DMC!

    This game was too hard for my childhood smooth brain, but I came back to it as an adult and was blown away. I actually think it's unironically better than every entry in the skate series. The world needs another Rockstar skate game. Or better yet, they could just work skateboarding into the next GTA.

    I have a demo disc with Thrasher: Skate and Destroy (PlayStation Underground Jampack Winter 1999 to be exact), and every now and then, I would play the demo, only to have not even the slightest idea what to do, but it was still somewhat intriguing. I'm a huge fan of this game. I used to play the hell out of it, and the trick system worked well for me. I loved the sponsors in the game and the experience was much closer to what I wanted in a skate game as opposed to THPS. I still bump tracks from this game. I loved EVERY song in this game. In the mid 90s skateboarding entered a hip hop phase so to speak... as the ska punk era in skating was over. THPS is and was always behind in that regard. I think it's marketing from the game companies too. I mean this game had a beautiful hill bombing section and it gets the spots of the time right. Lmao!!!!

    I was obsessed with this game as a teen. The controls and learning curve made it feel like a more hardcore game made for skaters (especially in hard mode where you have to press a button to plant your feet and land any trick). I remember getting so good at the game that I was able to get to normally unreachable points of the map and finding all sorts of satanic imagery and being really freaked out and gave the game away at school. I also remember something about an unlockable game mode where the goal is to commit suicide in the most brutal way possible. Weird stuff, doesn't bother me much today but back then as a sheltered 13-15 year old is scared me. Still I have a lot of nostalgia for this game, I'd love to find a copy and play it again someday

    This game is the best skateboarding game of the '90s, no question about it-better than Tony Hawk, even back then. The ability to take photos of your tricks, choose multiple sponsors, and having to finish the game three times to unlock various features is fantastic. The tricks are incredibly realistic, truly a feat for the time.
    In the beginning, I understand that the controls and maneuvers needed to perform tricks might seem complicated, but I can assure you that after even just an hour, it becomes very instinctive. Even landing and pressing square to confirm your landing on the ground becomes second nature.
    "At 07:31, man, you can't even imagine, I feel the same frustration now as you did back then with the game Session on PS4. Today, if I want to bust my ass doing a front flip, I'll go outside with my board. If I play Session, it's precisely to enjoy landing a front flip on a 20-step handrail without breaking my spine lol."
    ...which isn't the case in Session. It's uncontrollable, especially with their ridiculous idea of putting the steering on the triggers. What an absolutely stupid idea in Session."

    I like this game when I want a more chill vibe compared to the intensity of Pro Skater. You can't really do realistic style lines with Pro Skater, but Skate and Destroy does that a bit better. I also love the system for setting up for tricks as it's just like real life skateboarding. You actually need your feet in the correct position before you ollie to do the trick. Unlike Pro Skater where you do the tricks after you ollie. That set up trick system hasn't really been featured in any skating game since Skate and Destroy.

    At the time this game was much more satisfying than THPS. Practicing lines and working out your course on the map then starting a run and smashing that score was always fun. Especially against a friend. Once you familiarized yourself with the controls and all the variations of tricks it was like you actually learned something.
    As far as some of your gripes.
    You can manually change what song plays for freeskate and your actual run separately.
    You definitely get a bonus in points for pulling tricks over "risky" gaps or similarly risky situations. Example: catching a big air trick over the train in the subway gave a nice fat bonus.
    Its fair to not love this game but back when all we had was THPS, Thrasher and ugh... Street Sk8er... putting in time on this game was like hanging out at a spot in real life and just figuring out how to maximize each spot with all the cool stuff you figured out along the way. THPS just becomes a spamfest once you learn the special tricks.
    Anyway. Cool review.

    I loved this game. I remember THPS1 had already been out at the time, but my skater friends and I all loved this game the most. I liked the music more (although THPS music is legendary) and the way it felt to play just seemed more realistic. That said, we were over it after a month or so, and THPS sequels would reign supreme.

    This game introduced me to Gang Starr and a Tribe Called Quest as a kid.

    I loved this game. I was in 7th or 8th grade when it came out and skated every day. I think THPS is more fun but landing something sick in Thrasher was more rewarding

    Holy moly... The crashes in this game are _brutal._ Screen-shake, ragdoll, and blood spray.
    Also, the chase when you run out of time is an amazing idea.

      Makes me wonder if Skate 2 addition of guards that chase you was inspired by this.

    I like how you mentioned how gamers were spoiled for choice at the time. The year 1999 felt like the peak of the PS1, with so many great games coming out at the time and giving us so much to play.

    I love Hawktober, it's what got me into the channel years ago so I've a bit of an attachment to it. Hopefully you'll tackle the skate series, Session or Skater XL sometime. :) There was one skate game on PS2 that I was kinda into, it was more realistic, can't think of the name now, Evolution Skating? It was a more realistic take on skating. As for being a poser, you adore skating so you get a pass even if you've never kickflipped, who cares. :D

    I got this game when i was a kid on a 3 on 1 CD, it was this game, THPS and Trick'n Snowboarder. The funny thing is that i stopped playing Skate n Destroy cause of the cop chasing you at the end lmao, i was so scared of him that i ended up playing THPS instead and falling in love immediately.

    Not into or know anything about skateboarding but always enjoyable to watch. Interesting for a simulation title and getting the culture.
    To me this is like a reverse Gran Turismo situation (simulation over arcade but arcade mode was there, licenses sells the title, changed the industry), where the simulation title while good arcade feel works better, more fun and more accessible, licenses and big names/iconic things matter to sell something, and the quirks needed to be there which for chains/combos I can see being the case instead of only making what you can do between ramps and grinding spots with a few ollies or something whether cheating because go to another area or because the gaps and no set pieces give extra points. Which the THPS set pieces make sense I know the Spyro 3 ones of 3 towers, exploring, missions to do and a good mix of ramps/halfpipes and such worked enough besides the controls. I assume a few explosions and cool set pieces adds to the game the same as a kart racer short cut or interesting touches to the theme of the level or how I think about platformers and momentum to keep going, a combo in a beat em up, or keeping a good time trial run in a racing game.

    Rockstar’s obsession with overly weighty physics arguably started here! Great video, looking forward to the rest of Hawktober
