28:27 it's not a scam. The english translation is bad, it's not cabbage. A lot of dishes have some kind of metaphor name to it rather than what it actually is (like "ants climbing the tree" or "buddha jumps the wall"). It's also not the sweetpotato dish some commentors are suggesting. It's very similar but this dish is made of fried egg with a caramel coating. It's sort of like the sweetpotato dish but it's not. And usually with these kind of dish (caramel coated dish). It's supposed to come out of the kitchen super hot with melted caramel. And you get a bowl of cold water with it. You are then supposed to pick up a piece and the melted caramel will create the spuer fine strands that looks like the one in the picture and you dip it into the cold water to cool the caramel and solidify it and not burn the inside of your mouth. But it only works for like 5 min after the dish is served to you since the caramel will otherwise cool off on it's on in the dish and you won't get the strand effect. It's kind of hard to make right to get that caramel strand effect and a lot of restaurants don't have skilled enough chefs to do it right. It might have been the case here.
1. the guy didn't scamed you, the dish you pointed out on the menu was exactly they served, just that guy did not get the meaning of cabbage. 2. the hotel did not scam you, the disposable towl generally is offered in the express inn in China, and this is for people who didn't prepare their own towl or who don't wanna use the reusable towl for personal hygiene, but you have to pay for it. of course, the price will be higher than you buy it online. the disposable facial towl or shower towl are really popular in China, cuz it is easier to take for travellers since the material is lighter. if you don't wanna use it, you can just ask the reception offer you the normal towl. welcome to Harbin China.
that sweet popato you ordered is what you ordered, it is not scam, it is called Candied sweet potatoes, 拔丝地瓜, it has strings , or thread like , becuase it is sugar, the picture on menu book is over presentation of those threads and only some places make that many threads, not most places, you can go to different resturuants and try order the same by showing picture to them, they come out the same dish
Correct, the picture was over exaggerated but the real 拔丝土豆 is you ordered, and the price was reasonable, the make process is complex and deserves the price
you didn't get scammed, it is what you've ordered from the picture. It's Just that there's mistranslation from the English. It was a direct translation of the Chinese name, which the meaning can be wrong if it's not translated correctly. 酥黄菜 is a sweet potatoes dish.
This is fried crispy sweet potato with honey if i am not mistaken. I had it in Chengde and i love it so much that my tour guide treated me to another plate. Yum, still can't forget this unforgettable dish.
Finally saw the video of Harbin, welcome you to my hometown again I'm glad you went to the right restaurant. Maomao's is a very good local restaurant. About the dish name "老式酥黄菜" -> "old style SU HUANG CAI" there is a mistranslation, which is a problem of machine translation. This is a dish fried with eggs and flour, The original meaning of this name is 酥=crisp, 黄=yellow, 菜=a dish, but the word "菜" is translated as cabbage here, so I'm sorry my friend, this is not a scam, but there is a translation error here that no one has discovered. Don't blame the waiter. He is just a working college student. He probably didn't realize that this menu would mislead customers before.
The street where you live is the Central Street, built by the Russians back in 1898, there are lots of buildings from early 1900. It's ground cumin and peanuts on the sausage.. And it wasn't a scam, it was just a bad picture they chose at the restaurant... Disposable towels these days are very popular, better than those ones that are bleached and used by lots of people actually, it is a one use towel.
It is the same food with a big downgrading in cooking skills. But tbh, for that price, there is no way you can get what's in the picture. All the strings in that picture are sugar strings, which require quite a lot of work, a dish like that costs 138-158 yuan in higher-end restaurants. The dish you get is the basic version of Su Huang Tsai 酥黄菜, which is fried fluffed egg white(not sweet potato) with sugar coating, people dip it in a bowl of cold water to cool down the coating so it turens crispy, interesting texture. BTW, it's always called a "lady's dish" or "kid's dish" in northeast China, same as the Guo Bao Rou锅包肉. (In fact, lots of dudes order them "for the ladies and kids", but nah, they are ordering for themselves, never trust dudes🤭)

The dish is mistranslated on the menu. "酥黄菜" was translated to "yellow cabbage" because "黄菜" own their own is a kind of brown mustard. But this food is actually literally a soft (酥) yellow (黄) dish (菜). It's also named Silk-pulling Eggs (拔丝鸡蛋). The stringy thing is syrup. Usually, you have to pull them yourself.
Yes, it is spun sugar however the chef didn't spin the caramelized sugar as in the picture. Hence the confusion. They should have taken a picture of their actual food presentation instead of a stock picture of the dish, else it confuses customers.

The main difference of the Harbin ice cubes from normal ice is that the Song Hua ice cubes are crystal clear. No ‘fog’ inside. That way lights embedded inside ice cubes can be reflected perfectly.

Harbin the coldest megacity in the world i suppose. Harbin has 5.5 million population in the city (10 million in Harbin metro). the latitude of Harbin is actually not very high. its about the same latitude of Toronto. but Harbin is a lot colder than Toronto bc its part of Southern Siberia wheather system. winter average temperature in Harbin is -20c to -30c. occasionally it goes down to -40c during windy days. going 1,300km further north from Harbin is China-Russia border city Mohe, average temperature there is -30c to -40c and can goes down to -55c.

Hi JetLag, just to clarify, the dish that u ordered is correct. In chinese most dishes name are always not directly reflecting the ingredients but comes with exciting & wonderful naming. It's also named Silk-pulling Eggs (拔丝鸡蛋). The stringy thing is syrup where you need to pull when the dish is hot, maybe the kitchen did not do it for you or the weather not suitable then.

Yes -19 C is fairly normal in Edmonton, Alberta or Calgary Alberta. Northern Alberta are colder than this. However, Torontonians are more used to 0 to -12 C range in winter.
The two dishes that you ordered, Di San Xian and GuoBaoRou, are indeed authentic Northern Manchurian favorite dishes, but they have no fans outside of Manchuria.
28:38 It was the same thing. “Su Huang Cai 酥黄菜”. Just the chef didn’t pull his weight to do the wire-drawing, to make the appearance of the picture (for aesthetics). Besides, Huawei cars means powered by Huawei. Huawei has the best autonomous driving technology in the world, better than FSD from Tesla.
Actually, the last dish you ordered has an inaccurate English translation on the menu. In Chinese, it's more accurately called "拔絲雞蛋," which translates to "Pulling Silk Chicken Eggs." The tall white strands in the photo are melted sugar cooled into thread-like shapes, purely decorative for visual appeal. They aren't the essence of the dish. In reality, it's fried egg pancakes coated with sugar. Your order is correct; it just lacks the decorative elements.
Yea glasses and extreme cold don't mix well at all. You want to cover your face at that temperature but it doesn't just fog up your glasses. If you stay outside long enough, they form a thin layer of ice instead.
oh, just so sad to see the mc cap broke that dish is correct, the translation on menu is wrong I have been to Harbin twice and I still love to visit again. its the city having difference every year, the ice art on street and ice festival changes every year btw for people in China, Harbin is more attractive for its russian food than northeast cousine, you can find some best real russian restraunt in Harbin and you normally wont get russian food from other Chinese cities Harbin was built up into city in late 19th century by Russians, and they used to be lots of Russians lives there decades ago, this is how all these Russian churches and russian style old buildings come from, also makes this city so unique in China The sausage you tried is famous Harbin red sausage, which is a type of eastern european smocked sausage, brings to Harbin by Lithuanian
28:28 it is the same thing in the menu, but it's just not displayed right, all those filaments on top of the dish is actually when you pull those sugar and make the presentation, maybe this is a more down-to-earth version

I had my colledge in Harbin ten years ago. What I hated the most about the city is ..taxi. Taxi drivers were always trying to scam I have to say. They were hated by most of Harbin citizens actually. It looks like this may improve to some extent nowadays. But please still pay attention. What I always miss is Huamei Restaurant which is also on Central Street. I suppose there must be long queue waiting to have dinners there. Something funny is that I have ever lived in the same hotel for a few days and I recognize immediately, lol.

@@tengsteel8560 It's for paperwork at first. However, the OEM factories realized this was a selling point in China this way. It makes the product look more premium or lets the consumers believe they got a good deal.😅
Hi Steve, since you like history, here is some fun facts. Harbin was Founded in 1898 with the coming of the Russian-built and owned, Chinese Eastern Railway, the city first prospered as a settlement inhabited by an overwhelming majority of immigrants from the Russian Empire. Hence, the buildings were from the Russian empire era, not from the Soviet era. It is wise and good that China continue to maintain and up keep these historical buildings. Cheers.
The dish is misrepresented by the advertisement picture in the menu. What the picture shows is the same dish without a final touch to it, which will produce the bird nest looking crown on top of the dish by cooking sugar syrup. The disposable towels are used by a lot of motels around China to reduce washing cost I suppose. $100 per night is definitely a high cost in my opinion, but given the location of that hotel and hot winter traveling season, the price is somewhat reasonable. However, these are definitely things to be improved for Harbin. Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your trip in China.
Just remember to register with the local police where ever you travel (most hotels will help you to register at the front desk when you check in). Even if the police don't make big troubles for you, theoretically they have the authority to do so and fine you for hundreds if not thousands of rmb. We ran into that problem and the local police were within their right to fine us and we had to find a friend to help us to lower the fines (was like they wanted to fine us 1000rmb for each day we didn't report to them)
The main difference between the picture and the real dish is the stringing looking things in the picture which is caused by stretching semi solid sugar during cooking process. They don't stay in that form too long and collapsed quickly. To avoid this kind of misunderstanding is to use a translator device when talking to people who doesn't know any English.
老式苏黄菜, the most dazzling photo was found, but the appearance of the dish made is the most ordinary. However, most Chinese diners know that the silk threads on top are meant to tell you that my dish can be pulled very long, so this misunderstanding occurs.
Welcome to the weird (in a good way), wild, and wacky world of China! 😊 We have all sorts of interesting stuff, great food, lots of interactions with locals, unique sights and experiences, etc. And, yep, in Harbin you will find lots of Russians. 👍People influence each other very naturally, I think. I'm sorry, I have been to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. There is now an uninhabited street in the city that used to be a Chinese neighborhood, and traces of burning can still be seen. Many Chinese people were victims back then. Indonesian Chinese have been deprived of the right to learn their own language and culture, and many Indonesians do not even know their ancestral roots.
yes. it is Huawei EV car, with very intelligent auto drive function.
So glad to see you guys even enjoy the shopping part!
I can see that your hotel is close to the city center, and the price of such a hotel is usually higher, which means that even a modest hotel is not cheap because it is in a good location. But if you choose a hotel farther from the city center, you can choose a better configuration for the same price. And now that it's the holiday season, prices will be even more expensive than usual.

The disposable towel is the same as I bought from Amazon here in the US. I used it for travel, it's nice.
I love your China series! Just curious why don’t you 2 get a visa that allows you to stay in China much longer, that way you can enjoy taking the bullet train to many cities! 😊
Some people have concerns about the cleanliness of towels. Disposable bath towels are popula in recent years, but fragile.
Welcome back!
Guys it's nice to follow you there. It give me eeven more idea for my next trip to China as well. I can see that chinese seems to actually support the cold better than canadian 😀. To be honest, it's not that cold here in east Canada (Quebec). But we totally understand and fell what you guys feel. Thank you for sharing such wonderful experience with us!! Again thank you and waiting for the next video. Enjoy!!
very nice video. Its realy cold there. I guess its simular like home in Canada for your guys .🙂🙂 Enjoy the time
Hi JetLag, just to clarify, the dish that u ordered is correct. In chinese most dishes name are always not directly reflecting the ingredients but comes with exciting & wonderful naming. Example when "酥黄菜" is translated , it mean "yellow cabbage" because "黄菜" own their own is a kind of brown mustard. But this food is actually literally a soft (酥) yellow (黄) dish (菜). It's also named Silk-pulling Eggs (拔丝鸡蛋). The stringy thing is syrup where you need to pull when the dish is hot, maybe the kitchen did not do it for you or the weather not suitable then.
You guys are hilarious! Keep it up. Keep it up.
What a loving couple you’re! ❤ Ivana is so adorable 🥰
You are so lucky to have a sunny day and blue sky in Harbin👍
why ?
are you insinuating that Harbin is always gloomy and polluted and has no blue sky/?
@@andyl3655 Maybe not polluted, but it often appears to be lightly overcast or with some clouds. It's not very often to have clear blue sky.
Yes, Huawei makes cars, they launched its first EV last year. As everyone has pointed out, you guys were not scammed, it's just miscommunication. Really enjoying your trip report of China, can't wait to see the ice city.

Rice noodles typically in southern China. China have lots of different noodles, even there's potato noodles, they made noodles out of different types of starch.
Wheat products are normally found in cold region, they grow wheat there. It is correct to call it spaghetti liked.

Foodie north is a very nice restaurant on central parkway in Mississauga, you can find Guobaorou and Disanxian there, and their roast duck is good.
If you stay outside long enough, they form a thin layer of ice instead.
oh, just so sad to see the mc cap broke
that dish is correct, the translation on menu is wrong
I have been to Harbin twice and I still love to visit again. its the city having difference every year, the ice art on street and ice festival changes every year
btw for people in China, Harbin is more attractive for its russian food than northeast cousine, you can find some best real russian restraunt in Harbin and you normally wont get russian food from other Chinese cities
Harbin was built up into city in late 19th century by Russians, and they used to be lots of Russians lives there decades ago, this is how all these Russian churches and russian style old buildings come from, also makes this city so unique in China
The sausage you tried is famous Harbin red sausage, which is a type of eastern european smocked sausage, brings to Harbin by Lithuanian
28:28 it is the same thing in the menu, but it's just not displayed right, all those filaments on top of the dish is actually when you pull those sugar and make the presentation, maybe this is a more down-to-earth version
cannot wait to watch this vid, it's where I come from.

The price on the tag is for abroad markets, such as Canada. The importers request it. The quality is the same. But there are better ones in China that are not available in Canada.

Cheers.
Welcome to Harbin China.❤
The dish is misrepresented by the advertisement picture in the menu. What the picture shows is the same dish without a final touch to it, which will produce the bird nest looking crown on top of the dish by cooking sugar syrup. The disposable towels are used by a lot of motels around China to reduce washing cost I suppose. $100 per night is definitely a high cost in my opinion, but given the location of that hotel and hot winter traveling season, the price is somewhat reasonable. However, these are definitely things to be improved for Harbin. Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your trip in China.
very interesting video!love u guys!
nice buzzling dazzling city in cold artic weather
Toughen up, be a Canadian and don’t be afraid of the cold.
Just remember to register with the local police where ever you travel (most hotels will help you to register at the front desk when you check in). Even if the police don't make big troubles for you, theoretically they have the authority to do so and fine you for hundreds if not thousands of rmb. We ran into that problem and the local police were within their right to fine us and we had to find a friend to help us to lower the fines (was like they wanted to fine us 1000rmb for each day we didn't report to them)
That hat is really cute!
The main difference between the picture and the real dish is the stringing looking things in the picture which is caused by stretching semi solid sugar during cooking process. They don't stay in that form too long and collapsed quickly. To avoid this kind of misunderstanding is to use a translator device when talking to people who doesn't know any English.
love you guys, miss home so much.
It wouldn't surprise me that the Russians get influenced by the Chinese as well. People are very social by nature.
