    I also tried 1/4 brass inserts for plumbing compression fittings…works perfectly as a shot shell hull for .177

    excellent idea.... if you're interested in making some darts for a .177 caliber air rifle, i suggest trying some of the inserts from those old push up pencils, the one's with the little sabo looking things inside that you pull out and push in through the rear to push the next fresh tip forward... anway, those things fit perfectly in my crosman f4... the cone ingages the rifling in the barrel and flies straight and accurately... if you want to bump up the lethality, remove the graphite tip and feed a small finishing nail in through the rear of the cone and put some glue or epoxy in the cone behind the head of the nail.... for some pyrotechnic fun, get yourself some of that vinyl tubing used as a gasket around most common window screens, put a toothpick in the hole and lightly kiss it with a lighter or some kind of heat source, just enough so you can roll it in your fingers, while still on the toothpick, and widen it just large enough to insert a lighter flint... if done correctly it should fit perfectly in the berral. they fly fast and even a glancing blow at any hard surface will send sparks flying....

    to increase your accuracy cut the sides of the shell so it explodes full of air right after it leaves the barrel allowing the bbs to fully spread as they should :).

    #6 or #8 lead shot works good, and they are smaller so more balls fit in the load.
    My 50 year old Co2 powered .380 caliber Crosman Trapmaster 1100 shoots plastic shells filled with 55 #6 or #8 chilled lead shot up to 450 fps.
    I made some .22 cal. shells like in this video, with notebook paper and I made little plastic wads. I didn't chronograph any yet, as I only made 5 shells, each loaded with a different ammo.
    I used my Crosman P1322 multi-pump pneumatic air pistol and it seemed to work quite well, well enough that I plan to make at least two dozen shells when I have a chance.
    I used #6 shot taken from one of my limited stash of original Crosman Trapmaster ammo, and just reloaded the empty .380 caliber Trapmaster shell with a single .375" lead roundball, which the Trapmaster Co2 shotgun shoots very well.
    I thoroughly enjoy this tiny ballistics lab channel, and I hope you make many more interesting and inspiring videos .

      @Appachoppa112 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is 450 fps fast enuff in .177 to take birds?

    • @gk.spinoza
      @gk.spinoza ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Appachoppa112 it would depend on what type and size of birds, as well as which type of pellet is used as projectile...using the right type of pellet will make a huge difference in how much muzzle energy is created. It's the energy that will take down game. Cylindrical shaped or bullet shaped pellets such as JSB Jumbo monster pellets or H&N Rabbit magnum 2 pellets, and even Gamo Lead Roundball will retain more energy downrange than a typical "skirted" lead pellets.
      The type of airgun also makes a difference as to whether you can shoot heavier pellets or not.
      CO2 and multi pump pneumatic pellet guns can be used to shoot heavier pellets to get higher muzzle energy, but spring piston airguns might get damaged by shooting heavier pellets with them.
      As for airguns with velocity under 500 fps, I think that .22 caliber is a better choice for any sort of pest and small game hunting. The pellets are larger and much heavier. The Crosman model 2240 CO2 pistol and the model 1322 multi pump pneumatic pistol are .22 cal air pistols that are very popular for shooting rats and other small game.

    my goodness, I've got to try this out!
    I think that iam going to make .22cal shells.
    I already shoot a crosman trapmaster 1100 co2 shotgun and can use the tiny lead shot in those shells.
    I would love to shoot shot shells from my Crosman P1322!

    VERY NICE, everybody and their cat is messing with experimental powder burners. Good to see a balistic experimentation chanel for the airgun enthusiast. I would love to see a larger caliber say .22 or .30 that keeps the groups down to 5 inches at 20 yards.
    Did this myself years ago but I wasn't smart enough to put a decent wad behind it. I used salt in a pistol for killing flies which worked well and was much more fun than a fly swatter.

    When you redo these in a larger caliber...I would like to suggest that you make a airgun shot-shell with a clear shell that is loaded with Kosher Salt (or Himalayan Pink rock salt so it will look better visually), and throw some Dry Rub Marinade in the shell also for good measure, as a joke of course.

  • @leew7863
    @leew7863 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not original. Way back in the 1970s used to load our air rifle and then slide 3 extra BBs in the barrel and it did 4x the damage to a tin can as what a single shot did. Only thing is you have to always keep the barrel raised 1-degree or more. Anything level or lower, they roll out. I will give you kudos for a cleaver way to keep ammo from rolling out.

  • @swansongman1
    @swansongman1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In my 177 cal air BB/pellet gun, the bolt is magnetic. This keeps the bb from rolling out of the barrel before you shoot. The magnetic bolt will also hold 3 to 4 bb's at a time. I've been shooting my bb shotgun since the 70's. You can load more bb's than 4, but you need to be careful not to point the barrel down toward the ground because some of your bb's may roll out. The most I've ever shot at once is 10 bb's. 3 to 5 at one time does best.

      You could also just load a cotton wad, push it in a little, add shot, then another wad. That way there's nothing extra, you don't have to worry about paper getting stuck in the barrel. Along the lines of loading a black powder rifle. Except you have the modern convenience of a break barrel. Wad/shot/wad.

    Nice experiment. I've been thinking about something, though: what happens to the moderator and its sections if the cartridge breaks inside the barrel or inside the moderator itself? Won't the pellets damage the moderator of the air gun? At what distance were these shots taken? I think it'd be great if you tried the same with more pellets per cartridge and in .25 cal :) And also in an outdoors shooting range at, say 25-30 yards, so that we could see if those have hunting potential.

  • @tonyjackson4099
    @tonyjackson4099 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool, but imo that shot pattern isn't really practical for anything. I live in an apartment and during the summer I occasionally get spiders, roaches, and those disgusting house-centipedes. Bug sprays smell awful, you can miss, and chasing fast bugs while indiscriminately spraying all over the place isn't cool lol.
    I wouldn't even try that worthless "bug-asalt" thing. However, I used a homemade "salt-shell" in my Crosman pistol and 10 pumps literally vaporized one of those house centipedes. But salt is hard to work with and will eventually ruin the gun. So, I took some .45mm (.018 inch) small diameter steel wire and used wire cutters to cut roughly one millimeter pieces to use as shot. It's a lot of work, especially if you want a lot of "shells," but it works really well. You can do the same with staples if you dont have the small diameter wire. Then I used clear plastic straw for the casing. I cut them to around 3/4 inch long and then cut them lengthwise so they fold and roll into themselves and fit in the barrel. Once you have them to a .177 barrel friendly diameter you can tape them with scotch tape but the tape increases the diameter, so you'll have to actually fold the straw into itself so it's slightly less than .177 in diameter. It can be a pain in the ass trying to get them so they're not too tight and not loose in the barrel. I used cotton balls for wadding at both ends. In all honestly, the easiest way that also yields the same results, is to load like a muzzleloader with NO casing... Start with a wadding of your choice; cotton and tissue paper work well. Roll them into little balls and stuff one down barrel, not too tight, just enough to contain the shot material. You can use wire coat hangers to push the wadding down the barrel. Then pour whatever shot you're gonna use down the barrel; about one inch worth in the barrel. Finally, a second wad to hold in the shot. So it's wad, shot, wad. This way you dont have to hassle with a "casing" at all. You'll have to experiment with how much shot to use. Testing on aluminum foil is great to learn the shot-pattern at various distances. I got a shot patter of about a foot across at six feet from target.
