It was my understanding that when you drill a hole in the deck, you oversize the hole, fill it with epoxy, and then drill through the epoxy. This wouldn't be necessary if the deck is solid fiberglass, but if the core is balsa, say, the extra step might prevent a rotting core.

On my dual system the dogs are built into the windless for two reasons; like you said to stop a runaway situation but also to take the pressure off of the motors by allowing the dogs to hold the chains securely both in retracted and deployed modes. I was worried when you said you'd be drilling a hole through the deck (totally unfounded) felt a bit better that you were also drilling though the windless' steel plate and very relieved that you measured twice, drilling once...lol... At least if worse comes to worse you can always put in a bigger stronger bolt but you'll most likely never need to do so. For around the house and onboard I love using synthetic greases. There are so many places that a thin noninvasive, invisible coating can be placed that respells water and makes timely maintenance super simple. And synthetic grease does not feel greasy on the fingers, wipes off super easy. Excellent video U2, have a great week. I'm hoping your going to do some west coast winter survival MY videos and a few trips just to show it can be done.

Having the built in dogs would be nice. We will try to get some winter cruising in but it has been a very windy fall and the locks are closed for maintenance right now so going out into Puget Sound may not happen for awhile. Just curious, what type of boat do you have? Thanks for your comment as always!

    👍🏻
I would rather prefer to use a special gadget for the drill to remove a bit of surrounding wood core in a hole then fill the hole completely with epoxy and drill a the hole again when the epoxy cures

Why does is take two whole minutes before the title starts to get answered?
