You forgot to show the most important part: how to "undo" the knot after it's been under huge tension for a longer period of time. This is, in my opinion, one of the most valuable features of this knot and also the reason why I use this for almost everything.

Good video. One of the "big three" most important knots to know (imho)-this, the square knot, and the half hitch (or multiple hitches). The bowline is the knot to make a rescue loop as well, as it will not slip; for example, if someone has fallen in the water, or off an embankment. Thank you!

I enjoyed teaching many young Scouts that knot. When creating the hole and tree, I found Scouts like the additional analogy that the Tree must grow out of the ground, not on top of the ground. This gets the loop in the correct direction. Great Videos!!!

Got my first boat last may, a Yamaha FSH 190 sport. Learning boat knots with my sons has been fun. Even the wife has learned a thing or 2.
Its not glamorous but sure comes in handy when you're needing a good knot fast!
absolutely agree, this is the most important knot for boaters. I practised and practised until I could perform the knot in any position without having to look. Practice whilst watching tv. Once you have found your way of tying the knot, you will never forget it.

One of my favorites, having sailed for years. If you need a midline loop under high tension from both sides that holds fast but super easily undone saving your line, check out the alpine butterfly, amazing knot.
The Butterfly is one of those knots that make life so much easier.

One of the most useful knots there ever was.... It is all but impossible not to easily undo the knot. Can't think of anytime I've not been unable to untie it. Bigger the rope, easier it works.
My next two most used knot is the rolling clove hitch and the truckers hitch.

When I started my construction apprenticeship, I was given a book on rigging. I was told to go and buy myself a length of rope and learn how to tie knots. I was also informed that if asked I better be able to tie whichever knot it was. That was 50 years ago, and I still know the inside bowline, outside bowline, square, Carrick bend clove hitch... a good knot is one that you can tie, holds and you can untie.
The irony here is that the clove hitch doesn't hold 😅
Never understood why that's even taught anymore. It should only serve as a "step 1" to better knots like the spar hitch.
Thank you for showing the fast way to tie a bowline knot. I discovered how to do this when I was in Boy Scouts and we had knot tying races. It makes the knot so much easier. I find the bowline to be extremely useful.

The only knot taught to me as a royal navy ships diver. Was used to secure the diver to his safety line and the surface tender diver
Great knot! That second, fast method is how I learned to tie it. That "wrap" in the second method is a simple overhand knot, then give a slight pull on the working end and voila, there's your loop, then around the standing part, back down through the loop, and it's done in 2 seconds.

That's how I learn
When I have someone one the boat while docking I generally tell them the procedure long before we get to the dock. If I'm having them get off the boat carrying the bow line I always give them the loop end of the line because it's likely they won't know what to do with the straight end.

Also the only knot I learned at the 1 BS class I went to. However,we learned to do it with one hand, around our body.

A long time ago when I was still a teen I was in a diving club and training for my scuba certificates. We also learned to tie that knot while in the water very fast when you get a rope end thrown toward you for a rescue or something. Even can do that with one hand (two is more easy)while the other hand holds a person that is unconcious or something. The trick is to get the rope behind your back so you are in the u_shape of the rope (or behind the victims back so the rope passes between the two of you). The one hand holds the end and you try to have the long part that is leading to the shore /boat/ helicopter or what ever leading away from you to the side you face. now with that hand with rope end go over the other long line, come back with your hand under the line while you twist your hand. this makes the loop (rabbit hole) in the long end) now get the short line end behind the part of the long part of the rope that is "the tree" and with your fingers you push it behind the "tree"and at the same moment you get the short end with those same fingers via the front of "the tree". So the line makes a u-turn around "the tree" while you hand it over to yourself in the same hand (needs some practice but is not very hard) and now you pull the hand back so the loop (rabbithole) will slide over your hand and closes the knot. ones you had some practice you can do it within 2 seconds single handed

Only thing I’ve ever used it for is people - unless I’ve had the luxury of a basket. Cleat hitches are for docking. They don’t undo themselves and don’t require and additional hitch to allow them to be slacked or tight. Another benefit is you don’t have lines messed all over the place you just have an orderly cleat.

Agree, too bad comments do not allow for videos that I am sure you could provide. I teach it your way: real life situation, standing end on the boat, working end around person in the water as much a one handed operation as possible.

I worked in dredging for many, many years. The bowline is simply the best knot and everyone is expected to know how to make one. You can apply a lot of tension on one and it easily unties.
That's why the video thumbnail says "BEST KNOT". I hear comments like yours so often that I feel like the term is true.

As a young boy my parents had a houseboat (shack on styrofoam) and a run about. Dad was in the Navy and was constantly showing a young, hyperactive, uninterested boy how to tie knots. Many (boring at the time) knots and splices where learned in the off time. Now later in life, I am so thankful he took the time and MADE me watch and tie his various methods. When I read your title, before even watching, I instantly thought of those days. First one that came to mind was the Bowline. So I of course had to watch just to see. lol Thanks for taking me back!

It's so critical. We're getting ready to teach it again, this time showing how to tie it quick.
Once you practice the faster method, It all becomes muscle memory, then it's like riding a bike. You never forget how. Put about 8-10 inches of rope hanging out of your right hand and "whip" it over the part you're holding in the left hand so it comes back up through the hole. Then with your left hand just roll "the rabbit hole" right over the bitter end. It's a lot easier to do then explain, but once you get the rhythm you'll always remember ir.
I don't think I'm alone when I say that i can never remember knots when I need them. That's why ratchet straps are so popular and I have a bunch of them. Lol.
True, you really have to use them often to be proficient. I do a ton of boating so knots like this one are super important and being able to tie it quick is also super important.

@@samhain9394 Maybe I don't but I keep tangles to a minimum the same as I do with extension cords and garden hoses by making large loops laying on the ground, maybe 3' diameter. I hardly ever get tangles that way and the few times I do, the number of turns involved is minimal. Nice smooth pay outs. The hand to elbow method is probably the worst.

The keeper knot or a long tail on a bowline on the jib sheet or it can untie itself.
In Boy Scouts in England (1060s) we learned the Bowline and then had to do it hanging from a wooden beam in the scout hut with one hand and tying the knot around your waist with the other hand.
That sounds really challenging!
A Bowline knot if allowed to flog can loosen and become untied. This has happened to me a couple times when using a bowline to tie on my jib sheets. I now throw a half hitch on to the loop with the extra bitter end to resolve this problem.

It's not a loop It's a eye,all lines have a breaking strength ,all knots reduce the breaking strength, bu the bowline keeps 90% of the strength of the line do to less friction
Does it matter which direction the rabbit goes around the tree i find it worked in both directions.
Clockwise and anti clockwise.

The bo'lin' is essentially the same as a sheet bend. So, if you want to join two lines, you use the quick bo'lin' method.
Similar but not 'essentially' the same.
Know the BOWLINE and learn the BOWLINE ON A BIGHT for a boson's chair.......completely different knot, looks similar. Other good boater, Boy Scout knots we had to learn square knot, for reefing, clove hitch, sheepbend for joining lines of different diameters, sheepshank to shorten a line, and then one and two half hitches, which you already know....probably.

In Texas we pronounce it Bo-Lynn knot

If your toe rope does not have a loop already tied this knot is a great loop knot
It does not matter how you start what you called a P, be it under or over, as the logic that the end of the rope is required to follow after that, will speak to you so coherently to obtain the lock! .
The half hitch "granny knot" as sown will untie itself in water!

That's the beauty of the bowline, its easy to untie even after its been under an extreme load.
I had a bowline knot that loosened by itself when exposed to waves and not loaded. didnt know it could.
Tie a Hitch on the end and it should not loosen.
I learned how to die the bowline in scouts, the problem is that I learned how to do it one handed, with the line wrapped around me. It's the only way I can tie it. I need to practice this some more.

Make a slip knot. Run the end of the line through the hole. Then pull the slip knot back through itself as if you're undoing the slip knot. There's your bowline knot done SO MUCH easier.

I learned it this way too.
I've been messing around with boats for over 40 years now but I have never ever seen a bowline come loose by itself unless the end was kept ridiculously short.
It is rare but in TH-cam land you have to mention the possibility. Otherwise you get notified really quick by the experts that you missed that detail.
It can loosen if not under constant tension.

Too bad that the thumbnail for this video does not show a bowline knot. The bitter end leaves a proper bowline knot pointing towards the inside of the loop. Compare the knot at 5:56 to the thumbnail to see the difference.

I honestly think that the 'shortcut' version is just confusing and the first way you showed is the very simplest method to teach the knot. I still tie a bowline in this way every time. (Although I now do them upside down etc)
There's a much faster way to tie this knot as well believe it or not, and you also don't have to let go of the tag end AT ALL, so you don't risk dropping or losing it. I can't explain it here but do some more searching and you'll find it

There is an easier technique. Put the rope around your waist; go over the left side with the end of the rope on the right hand; bring it back under and go around the other end; done. Once you do it a couple of times, you can do it with eyes closed.
