I'm a Devils fan and I can't be mad at Hathaway for that hit. That was 100% the fault of the linesmen. If they had blown the whistle when they were supposed to, that hit would not have happened.
That first hit on Jared McCann is such a scummy move by Cale Makar. The guy did nothing wrong. He took an opportunity to have a breakaway shorthanded, took the shot, and skated off to the corner. He didn't slide to a stop and "snow" the goalie, he didn't do anything extra, and Makar just comes in and lays him out.
for sure, as a brand new spectator to hockey at the time things like that made it easy to pick out the biggest bonehead/immature losers to root against
Based on Makar body language, I think he does not see the puck so in that speed he assumes McCann has it so he checks him. You can see he knows he did the wrong move the second he hit him.

You should get your ears checked the whistle was way late and Cale had no idea where the puck was. He made a check on a guy who had gone limp and then the whistle happened. Don't stop until the whistle (or even better don't be seconds late with the whistle)

Makar had no reason to hit him at all, but he PURSUED McCann into the corner to give him that cheap shot. Textbook looked the same type of play that happened in the Dale Talon incident. Absolutely disgraceful. Then later in the series, the refs give Jordan Ebrle a 2:00 penalty for boarding. It was excessive contact, bad position, and within a congested area with the puck involved. I wanted Seattle to win the series but with how the McCann thing happened earlier the controversy was unnecessary from strictly the games point of view.

A late hit isn't always worse than a charge or elbow. He skated full force into him from the blue line and got the elbow in there too. That was tough to watch.
That first hit reminds me of the old Dale Hunter cheap hit after a goal on Pierre Turgeon - just because he goes so far out of his way to make that hit. Hunter for 20 games for that one - although the outcome for Tuegeon was definitely worse.
I don’t understand the hockey officials just standing in a scrum and blowing the whistle. Like help out your linesmen to break this shit up. That what I love about lacrosse, we have 3 officials and they all have the ability to make penalty call or any other call. They also all get into scrums if needed. Makes way more sense than standing in the middle going tweet tweet, waiting for the linesmen to come in and break it up.

That's not what you do to defend a play like that, it was completely reckless. Clear charging, and it just wasn't necessary.
Literally half of these were not late. They may have been dirty in other ways but 2,6,8, and 9 were well timed hits.

Same thing with mark schieffle hit. WTF is he supposed to do? It wasn't late there was no elbow no nothing. He's trying to stop him from scoring in a playoff game. Dude that got hit needs to have his head up. Period its freaking hockey it's fast and physical if mark stops he's not hustling. Now could he have tried to stick check him yes but if you've ever played competitive hockey, i have from middle school through college and stick checking someone esp big guys doesn't work. Theyre too strong. You do what you're taught from 5 years old. Play the body and play hard til you hear the whistle. I lived for it and playing the body was my absolute favorite part. I would have trucked him too. Scoring like that in a playoff game you're going to have to pay a price. There was nothing dirty about that hit. Unfortunate there was an injury but it wasn't late or even a charge. Today's game is soft. Scott Stevens basically ended Eric lindros and Paul kariya careers with dirty and late hits. Try watching those and then these hits today and try saying they're same. Then you'll see what a real dirty hit looks like..
