Yup, and if you need to go behind the horse, either just walk around the back of the horse from a horse length away so they won’t kick you, or just keep your hand gently on the horse’s back the entire time you walk behind them so they have an idea of where you are.

Turning your back is showing fear as far as the animal is concerned, there's a *_reason_* one term for surrender is "Turning Tail".
Not only is turning your back a fear demonstration to some animals, but ambush predators (e.g., most big cats) prefer to attack potential prey from behind, in which case turning away from them actively encourages, and can actually trigger, an attack. (Wearing a mask on the back of your head is a common thing in tiger country because of this.)
