The price is awesome!! They probably never had to buy a vanity thats why. I was surprised first time.i was shopping for one. The midcentury one is over 4k US$. She went with the expensive countertop where i used the cheap IKEA one, but still the price is awesome.

Even though it was more expensive, the quality is also better. Most vanities purchased pre-made are not solid wood. Yours is down to the new feet! Also glad you were going to replace some of the support you removed. Congrats on a beautiful solid piece!

I did this years ago with a glass vessel on top and a solid wood dresser from Craigslist and it was way easier than I planned. I used waterproof varnish meant for like boats or something the wood top. It was easy. One hole for the sink, one hole for the tap, and a hole in the back for the pipe. The hardest part was fixing the drawer that I cut through for the pipe so that it could still be used. Cost less than $200.

WiseWillow I was speaking in terms of what she spent on the DIY vs how much something brand new would cost. Even she admits herself that she wasn’t anticipating the price she paid for the countertop. It’s also worth it to note she saved i think $300-$400 doing it herself but she also spent a lot of time on it. For some people viewing this video that could be a determining factor. Do I want to spend a month on this project and save $300-$400 or bite the bullet and buy new? :)

The dresser was so expensive for beeing in that condition (scratches, dents, chipping varnish etc!!) 😱 is that a Canadian thing to pay so much because it's "vintage"? I don't know but here in Germany I feel like you wouldn't get that thing sold if it was more than a 100 max, more like 50€...

That big beam that goes from the front to the back slanted . Holds the weight of the countertop and sink . The small piece she cut out of the back didn't provide alot of structure . Its made more for the top drawers not so much the actual structure. Source: my dad , contractor of 30+ years .

mary banspach my grandmother traded my mother a dresser for a useless vanity. She cut the middle out and it was the perfect height to be on both sides of the sink. I always thought that was pretty cool. Have plans to use an antique wash stand for my vanity...but will need to heighten because people have grown taller in the past 150 years.

I was in the middle of doing my own converted vanity when I found your video. So glad I found. It gave me confidence I was not the only one thinking this way! I used an old sideboard, removed the old timber top and replaced it with a piece of stone. My plumber was so awesome he incorporated the plumbing into the wall so none of the cupboard shelves etc was compromised. Just had to remove one of the drawers for the s bend and remove the face and glue back on the front of the cabinet. The cabinet cost me second hand AU$250 (it’s in perfect condition -bargain) and the stone AU$450. So about the same price as a mid range no modern style wall hung vanity. Thank you. Keep the videos coming.

It's beautiful and it's one of a kind. I love stuff like that. Honestly for a bathroom vanity I wouldn't mind shopping for that. I've been told I have very modern, masculine taste. 🤷‍♀️ I love dark colors and metal like steel. I would maybe get something with espresso colored wood. I found granite called silver galaxy and I think I would pick that. It has very different looks but I like the type that has a marbled look to it with creams, whites, silvers and other colors like red or blue through it. I absolutely would go with an undermounted sink. They're much easier to clean. Even though you're cost as much as buying one you really can't compare it though because yours is custom. It's something you helped create and you'll always be happy knowing that. 💖💖💖

With home renovations and DIY, you can’t put a price on the journey nor the satisfaction of a job done by you for something you love. HAVING SAID THAT, I think a fantastic end result could have been achieved with perhaps a vanity from IKEA, with custom fronts made and/or hardware. Big box stores have shockingly expensive vanities for what you get. I understand that pain of retrofitting something for a bathroom. We have kitchen base cabinets turned into laundry room/powder room vanity. Seemed straightforward enough but it totally wasn’t! A+ for effort and finished product!

Even adding the extra couple hundred for the taps the price for what you have is very good!! When we redid our bathroom we were stuck on choosing what was in style and available at the moment. I never liked my vanity and we paid $900 for a 36" counter. You did great!! The fact you love it is an added bonus!! I'm impressed and well done!!

I love it! It is so cool and you won’t find it anywhere else. One thing I think you could do to make the right side specifically easier is make the drawers into a cabinet and leave that side completely open. Maybe you take the drawer fromts and attach it to a thin piece of plywood and add hinges? Idk. But I love the diy and love the look of it!

  • @nikierna9691

FYI for future dresser vanity diys: ikea ODENSVIK counter/ sink combo comes in a ton of sizes & sink combinations & not only is it cheap (i got the like 50 inch long single basin option for under $150), the basin its self is shallow so you dont need to cut out much drawer space like with a standard sink!
    You can just-
Take the backer board off the dresser (no one sees it & it makes life easier at instal),
Take off the top (so you can use the wood for another project but you could just cut a hole in the top where the sink goes),
Reinforce if needed (a regular sink cabinet is made to carry that much weight but a dresser usually isnt (but a hutch base often is)),
Drop the counter / sink combo in,
& slide the drawers in to see what needs to be trimmed!
I only needed to trim a 2 inch gap on the inside edge of the top drawers. No lost space!
Hope this helps someones future DIY 💙
