In the 70’s my parents grocery budget was $50 per week for a family of 6, for everything including meat most nights.
In the mid 60’s they paid $17,000 for their home, current value is 1.2 million.
Just an idea of Toronto, Canada prices.

Loving this! Had to pause so I could add my 2 cents to the gas price - even if the majority use electric vehicles, and demand for gas goes down, I don't think the price will go down (yes, I had 2 college econ classes and understand supply and demand). My prediction: they'll cut back on oil production and charge high prices, in effect changing the supply -demand equation until they can figure out how to move their $ out of oil production. The super rich can always find ways.

I think smart watches and probiotics/gut health as the way of the (medical) future. I think one day (possibly more than 40 years), we’ll all be able to wear devices that monitor our health (heart, breathing, blood sugar, hormones etc). I also think doctors will be able to prescribe/recommend specific strains of probiotics to treat various conditions (again though, potentially more than 40 years). This is all assuming no major disruptions to scientific advancement like major wars and/or environmental problems. But I do also wonder if/how we can fix all the problems we’re causing the environment (you don’t have to know climate science to know we’re not treating the planet in a sustainable way).
In terms of pop culture, the main adult, popular, show/movies I can think of that had a positive spin on the future is Star Trek. I would like to think it would be right. But I suspect things like Altered Carbon are more realistic.
    Great episode as always 👏🏻

AN 1800 sq ft 3 bd home from the 70s isnt a basic home -its a home someone in their 40-50s would own. Only today is it considered modest. Both side of the coin have points. Boomers dont really grasp how little money buys today esp if they have their home paid off because they have little in the way of major expenses unless they have a health issue Medicare isnt paying much toward they travel a lot. Their kids want to have everything their folks had when they were in their teens but forgot or were unaware how the parents struggles or pinched pennies before and thru their early years. They also have a sub for this and buy tech for the entire family. You have a family of 4 all packing iPhones thats a lot of cheddar a year. Now add in gaming costs for the kids and dad. All in all the modern family spends a lot of money on stuff that didnt exist 20 years ago.

Sometimes I wonder if more and more people will rebel against the excesses and go back to a simpler life, whether minimalist or not. The average home cost in the 70s was much lower, but also the sizes were smaller. I just wonder if people will collectively realize that more stuff doesn't make you happy - especially if it makes you broke. The debt crisis may cause more people to go back to cash, and this in turn will lower prices, because when more people say, "How much" instead of "how much per month," people will spend less on big ticket items. I just feel like something's got to give, and this may be the direction people take the future.

I’m kind of tired of the argument that the younger folks that legit are saying it’s harder now is because they aren’t living contently. It’s just not true. Yes average homes are bigger but who are buying those homes? Not the average millenial or gen z, unless they can afford it. We live in a modest 1800 so ft ranch with 3 bedrooms from the 70’s. We’re about to have our 5th and will have 4 boys in 1 room. The value is 400k. My husband makes over 6 figures so I think we do quite well for ourselves financially yet if we didn’t get lucky buying our home for half that price in 2016, we wouldn’t be able to afford this modest home. And most people my age are living like this while making quite a lot of money in comparison to what our parents made and were able to afford

Yeah, because it is two institutional pillars conspiring to make profit. Colleges can set any price, banks will pay any price, student is now chattle to the bank until debt bondage is cleared. An exageration, but is the same principle. There is no limit to the cost or price other than the amount of return the bank can see. It does not even matter if the bank fails to see profit for decades, or ever, as the debt remains an asset on the balance sheet for the life of the person.

Sci Fi story. Man from the past travels to the future (set in our present) and is amazed that all the information discovered by humanity is available on a hand held device you can learn anything you want.
Actual present: Device is used for gratification, escapeism, data harvesting, narcassistic behaviours and overly changeable in behaviour. Very rarely education.

Sadly in certain areas of Canada gas *is* $5-6/gallon, and the average home price is One Million. We're also taxed like crazy and don't have 'free' healthcare.
Also sadly, I anticipate Taylor Swift not touring again after this, living the rest of her life out of the craziness she has to deal with. She'd have to copyright a holographic version of herself lol, but yes, then the fake TS would be performing while real TS stays sane.

I think cash will be no more. I just went on a trip last week and took cash, I had $100.00 bills, and no one would take them! They kept asking if I had smaller bills. I ended up having to use my debt card instead of my budgeted cash!

As a Christian, I am hoping that the Rapture happens before the end of this next 40 years. I honestly don’t want to live in a time where everything is digital, and milk is $8 a gallon. Why would anyone want to live in a society like that? I’m gen X , not a Boomer, and I do like Apple Pay… but I also still use checks.
I never want an electric car unless Elon can fix the hazard of lithium batteries.
I’m all for some things, but seriously the way the politics of the world is, we are better off without it.

5% inflation means doubling rate every 20 years. So 40 years will mean prices will have doubled twice from now. Not accounting for hyper inflation or societal collapse.

Rule of 72: if inflation averages 3.5%, prices will double every 72/3.5= 20.5 years.
So in forty years, things will probably double twice, or four times current prices!
Your $4/gal milk today will be $16 in 40 years!

Lol at the turn of the 20th century they said that about gas powered cars only the rich could afford everyone else used horses then Henry Ford made them affordable for average people with the model T. Elon musk is to electric vehicles as Henry Ford was to combustion engines. Mark my words in the next couple decades electric vehicles will replace combustion.
