One detail I love about this entire fight is that at the beginning of it, ghost rider is the one saying “Lobo of Czarnia, your sins are innumerable, I am here to wreak vengeance upon your soul.” But at the end of it, it’s completely Zarathos taken over and he. Is. PISSED and makes sure to tell him that there is no escaping when he says the same phrase, but more menacing

So far I have made exceptions for: Zuko, Shadow the Hedgehog, Blade, Doom Guy, Hellboy and Guts (despite my saying that I would not make an exception for him because I had no clue who Guts was at the time). I want to say that I *do* believe that edge-lord is an old term that I don't use anymore, at least in a negative connotation. I love all characters because of their flaws, not in spite of them, *if* being an edge-lord is even considered a flaw in this day and age. I, personally, believe that characters deemed with the titles "edge-lord" and "Mary-Sues" make for the most interesting stories. I will say though, out of all these wonderful characters brought to me, Ghost Rider and Spawn are still my favorites. (And maybe Kratos too.)
Imagine talking about the penance stare, showing the footage, but failing to mention that it once ONE-SHOT GALACTUS. It's one of those attacks that's so dangerous specifically because it scales up based on how dangerous the person it's being used on is. The more damage they've done, the more harm they've caused, the more penance they have to do.
The penance stare has become a joke. Captain Marvel : "I'm tired of being punished" Punisher :"I don't regret" Thanos: "I like pain" So it's the marvel writers who don't take it seriously, so can't expect the audience to take it seriously either.
It's a joke among writers who don't understand how it works. It doesn't matter if you're tired of it. It doesn't matter if you regret it. It doesn't matter if you like it. The only way to avoid having to do penance is not to have done harm. Basically, it all comes down to whether or not the writers in question respect the works of other writers, or just want to roll over established elements of the setting the way DC steamrolls Marvel characters whenever they're given permission to write them in crossovers. They wave off the Penance Stare because they'd rather ignore it than write a story around it.

Cage was a terrible ghost rider actually. Not necessarily his fault, but yeah. Ghost ride is supposed to be more collected. Cafe's ghost rider was off the rails
I think the best way to sum that up is in Marvel the devil has to go almost full force if not completely all out in order to come out on top of a full-strength Ghost Rider. The DC version of the devil would quite literally just looking Lobo's general direction from 69,420 universes away and he would just stop existing. There would be no trace of him left.
I don't think Ghost Rider gets enough credit for being one of the most powerful characters in all of comic book lore. He's OP to the max! His next logical opponent would be The Doomslayer, but that's not my call to make.
Now I wanna see a fight between those two, GR can go toe-to-toe with gods while DG has *killed* gods. One is a one man act of divine retribution, the other is a living comet of hellish vindictiveness... I'll let you discern which is which.
THAT was wonderful! Ghostrider is extremely underrated. Lobo and Doomsday are techincally unkillable, but how do you escape a being that brings the might of heavenly hell onto your very soul and not just your skin. A stare as powerful as the sin count of the one being punished and Lobo has millions, if not billions of souls to answer. Brilliant!
You at first I was thinking "It's obviously going to be lobo he can survive any physical damage, take on the forces of hell and heaven, and wage war on cosmic entities" and was a little apprehensive on whether he was downplayed during the actual fight, but after the explanation I have to agree. Literally that line is what keeps me coming back to re-watch this. Very well delivered, through the Ghost Rider reverb filter, makes it a pretty terrifying threat. Especially since he fulfills the promise like 2 seconds after saying it.

@@weltallelite Yeah. It’s weird how the stare works, but what it does is that it’s not exactly a “guilt” thing, but quite literally making you feel the emotions of the ones you hurt. The guilt (if the victim is capable of guilt) would come after the suffering.
One of my favorite moments in that World War Hulk battle is that Ghost Rider eventually just drives off and leaves Hulk be because he realizes: the people behind what happened to Hulk are the actual sinners.

Man, I always love to rewatch the fight just for the penance stare. That’s one of the coolest and most just ways to take down an evil villain. Johnny Blaze is the most known but in the comics Robbie Reyes (the GR in Agents of shield) took over for Johnny and had a spot on the Avengers but even Frank Castle aka Punisher became Cosmic Ghost Rider and served under Thanos infact there's over 10 named ghost riders in the comics and eluded that there's been more. It's kind of like the Pheonix Force or the mantel of Thor or Black Panther in that whoever zarathos chooses to bond with BECOMES ghost rider and has access to all his powers as Mephisto's enforcer
It would have destroyed Thanos really fast. While Comic-Thanos doesn't really care about the penance stare, the movie version of him felt a bit guilty about his kills and would die through that.

Well, the soul stone would protect Thanos from the penance stare, but he didn't have stones in the big battle in Endgame. So if Ghost Rider came through one of these portals, he could have killed Thanos with ease.

It's one of those attacks that's so dangerous specifically because it scales up based on how dangerous the person it's being used on is. The more damage they've done, the more harm they've caused, the more penance they have to do.
The penance stare has become a joke.
Captain Marvel : "I'm tired of being punished"
Punisher :"I don't regret"
Thanos: "I like pain"
So it's the marvel writers who don't take it seriously, so can't expect the audience to take it seriously either.
It's a joke among writers who don't understand how it works.
It doesn't matter if you're tired of it.
It doesn't matter if you regret it.
It doesn't matter if you like it.
The only way to avoid having to do penance is not to have done harm.
Basically, it all comes down to whether or not the writers in question respect the works of other writers, or just want to roll over established elements of the setting the way DC steamrolls Marvel characters whenever they're given permission to write them in crossovers. They wave off the Penance Stare because they'd rather ignore it than write a story around it.

I think the best way to sum that up is in Marvel the devil has to go almost full force if not completely all out in order to come out on top of a full-strength Ghost Rider. The DC version of the devil would quite literally just looking Lobo's general direction from 69,420 universes away and he would just stop existing. There would be no trace of him left.

THAT was wonderful! Ghostrider is extremely underrated. Lobo and Doomsday are techincally unkillable, but how do you escape a being that brings the might of heavenly hell onto your very soul and not just your skin. A stare as powerful as the sin count of the one being punished and Lobo has millions, if not billions of souls to answer. Brilliant!

turns out, Lobo's va for this is episode was Jason Marnocha. He does a lot of DC and Transformers voice overs.
You at first I was thinking "It's obviously going to be lobo he can survive any physical damage, take on the forces of hell and heaven, and wage war on cosmic entities" and was a little apprehensive on whether he was downplayed during the actual fight, but after the explanation I have to agree. I never would have considered that angle when imagining these two fighting, this was very well thought out. Ghost Rider has been the one getting downplayed

Lobo is very OP. but the Penance stare is literally the worst thing that can happen to him after all he’s done .

this apparently makes him a Psycho and thus he lacks proper conscious to even understand what the Penance stare does.
(his entire shtick of killing half of the universe was just to impress death and he is completely like a serial killer who thinks he is not doing wrong by killing others etc)

I don't know if some had pointed it out yet and it won't change the results I'm satisfied with G.R Being the winner but I'm surprised there was no mention of Lobo going by far to survive Battling The Mask himself as it says in 13:56 in his list of Feats.
