Considering how often the space station gets attacked, J'on being on guard duty there makes sense as he can handle any assault on the station pretty much alone.
I love how y'all show just how much of an abstract battle this would be. It wouldn't just be two strong as hell dudes going at it. It would be two beings we really don't fully understand doing a kind of battle that no one would ever really comprehend.
This was perhaps the most existential Death Battle ever. Not only did they both acknowledge that they were being forced to fight and ponder why, they're both near infinitely powerful beings with great cosmic and philosophical knowledge who had lost their entire civilization. It was going to be a bitter victory no matter who won. And it was a total love letter to these characters. Amazing job.
I love how they both become self aware of their situation by the end but were still forced to end one another, and were both sorta at peace with their end result.
It is genuinely fascinating to watch the Surfer and the Manhunter realize at the same time they were fighting solely for the fight. When their minds connected, they shattered the 4th wall and saw that this was exactly what it says on the tin: a Death Battle, a fight they *must* fight even if they don't want to. Of all the incredibly powerful beings that have battled on this show, these are the only two(who are not inherently aware of the 4th wall by concept ala Deadpool)that would end up in a scenario like this and acknowledge it, that was a really nice touch.
I don't think they broke the 4th wall they realized that the setup had them both thinking the other was their enemy who must die, that in reality they should have no reason to fight and yet they must.
@@umcThunder72yeah they didn’t know about the show or death battle because they did not know the reason they where fighting only that they had to fight and one of them had to die but they didn’t find out it was for a show for our entertainment so they didn’t shatter the 4th wall. (But you can say they grazed the surface of it?)In comparison, Deadpool knows as much as we know and interacts with the audience 😂
@@cryochick9044 They only have knowledge of the things that exist within their world that means they have not broken the 4th wall as that would require some knowledge or understanding of the world they live in in a meta perspective.
That Justice League episode where Jonn goes home to Smallville for Christmas with Clark's family...the one where he's petting the cat in the window? The most impossibly heartwarming thing you've ever seen. Literally my favorite Christmas episode of any television show ever.
I love that end. In an actual encounter, they would never fight to the death, if at all. Them becoming aware of the forces surrounding the fight fits so well
Wouldnt after one of them figured out they werr being controlled wouldn't either one of them began immediately investing what the hell just happened? They could create a character inconsistency or plot hole.
@MrvlOS I think they just didn't want to do that because they already did a self-aware takeover in deadpool vs. Pinkie pie and thought people would be upset, but yeah, that is how it should have went down
This is the first _serious_ Death Battle where the characters are actually *aware* of the cosmic rules being unwillingly placed on them by the outside force that is the show. It's been acknowledged in the series before, but... that was in Deadpool episodes, not exactly meant to be philosophical or existential.
This right here... This is one of the most beautiful death battles ever made. It wasn't a brawl of two mights, it was a love letter to two beautiful characters. Well done DB Crew.
Something that strikes me in this fight is how, in the final exchange between Martian Manhunter and Silver Surfer, they both acknowledge that they have no real reason to fight but need to anyways for reasons they don’t know, with Silver Surfer even commenting that he “may never know why they were made to fight” and that he didn’t want it to end like it did in the first place. I take it as one of the few instances that shows that Wiz and Boomstick did simulate this fight, and that these two were the only combatants in the show thus far that were cosmically aware and enlightened enough to just barely be able to yet not quite recognize that fact, where only fourth wall breakers have been able to before in the shows history.
Wonder if the next battle is going to involve that in some way even if realistically the only fourth wall breaker between bill and discord is the one with both his eyes
The voice acting in this was incredible. When SS hit MM with the beam that would ultimately kill him, you could really feel the pain in MM's voice. And the somber acceptance that MM would not win, and then choosing to leave SS with kind words despite knowing that with him, the martians die out for good, was such a chilling conclusion. This has to be one of my favorite battles of all time, if only for that final dialogue they had within the heart of the star.
Martin Manhuter showed up in Zack Snyder's Justice League. The most accurate version of the character I've seen. Yeah, you could ask where he was, but then he was General Swanwick helping out the best he could to fight the Kryptonians and send them back into the Phantom Zone. He was hesitant to launch a nuke to Superman and Doomsday. But then, he didn't do anything as the story wasn't even finished yet.
Well it’s its hard nigh impossible to put broken pieces of crap on the big screen like this and have it make actual sense; especially if it’s live action.🙃

The ending dialogue was so good. Honestly I wasn’t expecting too much of a fight because Surfer has this free. But that ending was perfect summarizing them both.
Never thought and episode of DeathBattle would have the character who wins actually acknowledge that him killing his opponent is out of character for him
His mental resistance evidentially let him at least question the death battle induced altered morality even of he couldn't shake it enough NOT to kill the martian
I won't lie I actually cried a little watching this episode. I knew about both characters but had no true idea or knowledge about their backstories or just how deeply tragic they both really were. As much as I was hoping and routing for MM to win, I'm actually happy he at least gets to be with his family again. So I confess this was a very emotional and deep Death Battle Episode.
It would have been something if SS blasted MM to the barest possible collection of atoms before death while his speech was going on, and then changed his mind and allow MM to regenerate having secured the win. While going on about defying the forces compelling them to fight.
I think this is the most existential Death Battle combatants have gotten regarding their situation outside of 4th wall breakers. I'm almost curious if this will come up again
I like that it wasn't just a bombastic super-brawl, they were quite...reserved? It really fit their personalities-and what a poignant display of their power that they REALIZED THEY WERE IN A DEATH BATTLE VIDEO AND THEY HAD NO REAL REASON TO KILL EACH OTHER, BUT STILL HAD TO.
It was like a sadder version of most of deadpool's battles (especifically the one vs the mask). it kinda feels like they set up J'onn to die but actually played for drama.
You know some people may see galactus as a bad guy but honestly it was pretty cool how he has empathy for the Silver Surfer and the guilt he felt for all the deaths
Yeah his character is more so a tragic environmental force. He’s neither a hero nor villain, he’s basically a hungry lion and entire planets are simply meals that keep him alive. It’s not unlike humans eating animals.
@@crabPEOPLE2000 Yeah like Galactus does it because it's his job and when it was brought up in Galactus VS Unicron, if Galactus can avoid any unnecessary deaths, he would but he's bounded by his hunger.

That was amazing! The animation and the voice acting was god tier. I don't even care who won it was just great to see such talent manifest itself better than any movie Hollywood puts out. The true winner was Deathbattle 🏆
I'm glad that they realized that the only way to justify these two fighting is to have them not know why they're fighting. In a lot of cases, the hero vs hero battles are a bit forced, especially since most heroes don't straight-up kill people. This battle straight-up says, "Yeah, there's no real reason why they're fighting all-out to the death. We aren't even going to try to justify it with some convoluted scenario." Which is how it should be in this case, since these two deserve that respect.
I love how this entire fight didn't feel like two brick houses crashing into each other, but a display of the two's train of thought and mentality. It highlighted their tragedies in their life, rather than the powers they hold back due to their respect for the living. It gave light to the mental pain that they've suffered for who knows how long, and the ending was the icing on the cake. While some of us probably wanted more action, this battle is unique in a lot of ways. Probably one of the best endings to a battle, too.
It's honestly sadder when you realize that Norrin Radd knew exactly what the pain of losing your loved ones was. He saw it as a mercy killing, crying as he sent a good-hearted alien to his family.
Definitely my thoughts as well. Both were deeply philosophical and the end fit them perfectly, it might not have been the most action packed but definitely suit the characters brilliantly
I love how they focused primarily on both sides' philosophical natures. They're both crazy powerful but it's not like we've never seen this level of power on the show before, so focusing on what makes these two unique lets the episode, and especially that ending, stand out from all the other comic book herald throwdowns.
This was one of the most impressive, yet one the most depressing Death Battle ever. They're both near infinitely powerful beings with great cosmic and philosophical knowledge who had lost their entire civilization. It was going to be a bitter victory no matter who won.

This was genuinely one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen, because if you think about it, there's no genuine reason why they would fight, but they HAVE to for the sake of the Vs discussion. I hope someday Marvel and DC does a crossover, where these two simply have a conversation about life, the universe, and just existence.
That final bit of meditation the two of them shared before the end was legitimately beautiful. Hats off to the writers, voice actors, animators, and everyone really.

So this wasn’t mentioned but the Martian’s fear of fire was chosen to be programmed into them not only to act as a weakness but also to keep them from accessing there true form and full powers. There’s a story where John was able to remove this fear of fire and went mad with the power it gave him.
I appreciate how they depicted both characters here with respect to their character's values. I don't think either would enjoy having to fight each other and there would be level of mutual respect between the both of them. I love how both this fight and the Discord one they had the loser win in a way, though here it's more them finding kinship in their shared fate of being pitted against eachother, which really is a horrifying concept. Trapped together in a pocket dimension and made to fight someone you don't even know to the death, and lacking the 4th wall abilities that has so far proven the only way to escape it really is a grim fate. It's essentially making the premise of the show the antagonist.

Yeah, it was beautiful.

I feel like this is a better representation of both these characters than Hollywood will ever give us.

I'm glad that they realized that the only way to justify these two fighting is to have them not know why they're fighting. In a lot of cases, the hero vs hero battles are a bit forced, especially since most heroes don't straight-up kill people. Which is how it should be in this case, since these two deserve that respect.

@@novawilliams873There's an ad comic where Aunt May (accidentally made a herald named Golden Oldie) is able to solve Galctus' hunger problem by feeding him Twinkies (first a bunch of regular ones from Earth, then planet-sized ones made by an alien chef she discovers).
Galactus is a kind soul forced to feed on planets by a higher power , the sole survivor of his universe destined for imperfect immortality by Eternity and for eternity because the universe needs destruction to balance everything
@@felixlara2945So his role is basically like Beerus from Dragonball Super. Except instead of blasting planets as his 9-5 job, it's because he was inflicted with a space curse from a higher being.
Total props to the Surfer's actor. He had that "Lawrence Fishburne Vibe" that originally made me a fan of the character in the Fantastic Four movie back in the day.
I loved that dialogue at the end, much more introspective than any death battle I've seen
I concur. They were very elucidate, compeer in fact. Recognized and confirmed that they were consanguineal in every way because they synced without measure. Yet still valued ones life knowing that which ever prevailed will still be a beautiful offering & detrimental sacrifice. (The author would've said something like this too 🤣😂)
@@Apaqalypse747me adding more complicated words to my paper to get better grades 😂
@@PopTap haha. Word word 😁. I wouldn't say complicated but definitely an eclectic dialogue for those who understand unique vernacular. 🤣😂
This, along with some of the preamble of GalactusVSUnicron and the scenario/ending of DiscordVSCipher is some of my absolute favourite death battle content.
I like the way the questioning of the ethics/purpose of death battle being justified or not is brought up and implicated as another source of Unicron's power.
One of the best-written Battles to date; both characters are shown to be so soulful, the climax drives a Spike right through the feels. Excellent work 💯
Yeah this is the sort of introspection and philosophy that people myself included wanted out of beast vs Goliath but this is there redemption
This was a more questionable death battle than any other. No matter who wins, it's going to be a depressing victory. 😢
This Matchup legitimately made me Cry 😭
And these are comic book characters I honestly didn't care about.
Not so depressing for Marvel fans who were still pissed at Raven’s victory, but hey, at least we got a win, and it’s from a herald of the Planet Eater himself, Galactus.
Not sure, I’d say Jojo vs Demon Slayer was up there.
@@Flarisnah not even close
@@multiverse_media2023idk why, I think Marvel has more wins over DC in Death Battle.
MM is so criminally underrated. Dude is ultimately the same level if not higher than super man and so op that he had to be psychologically nerfed
Indeed if he did this well against Perpetua no way he lose against Surfer
@stevecavalle5670 I was rooting for MM but unfortunately the power cosmic has never actually been given a limit
@@loving_lecturer0155 You mean the non existant given limit which Surfer seems to have with the power cosmic while he lost so many times against so many characters ?
@stevecavalle5670 yup that same vastly inconsistent power where galactic gave him a sliver of his power but its enough to overpower galactic himself
@@stevecavalle but you could say the exact same thing about MM, not saying your wrong thats just how comics are
this is really beautiful , this is not just about super power but the battle of knowledge and philosophy
Wow the end of the fight got pretty heavy. The dialogue between the two does sound like something they would say to each other. Also going into this I didn’t know a lot about the Silver Surfer but after diving into him and J’onn it’s a really philosophical and tragic life these two have and man I just feel sorry for these two and the emotional journeys they have been on. Their powers are not only really fascinating but it made me think about them a lot as characters I do have a new appreciation and respect for these tragic heroes.

My hero
I think this may be one of the best Death Battles I’ve seen. These are two of my favorite mainstream comic characters, and I really loved the way this fight was handled. Top credits to everyone involved.
Honestly, the last ones got a pretty interesting execution, mostly talking about Vader VS Obito, Guts VS (I allways forget his name) and this last one.
Giving respect to the one who loses in a way It actually fits the character
this is a top 3 death battle in my opinion and i've been watching for way over a decade. this gave me so many goosebumps
