That's just one of the rules of death battle. Rules or codes a character may have to not kill are wholly ignored for the sake of the death battle.

DEATH BATTLE rule #2: to ensure a fair fight, any specific moral restraint from killing is removed from all combatants. All other traits are considered.
The funny part about that to me is that Ed is equally against killing but everyone just seems to be ignoring that.
@@Vgamer311 not really, Ed is a little more open to that than Aang. But I guess people forgot about Ed being against killing due to how Ed seemed like he was willing to do anything (before backing off from spoilers).

Manga Ed is so wholly against killing that he wasn’t even willing to use a philosopher’s stone to save his own life when he was impaled by an I-beam, nor was he willing to use Hoenheims’s own willfully gifted life energy *or* a philosopher’s stone to save Al’s life. If those two scenarios weren’t even enough to make him *consider* using an already-made philosopher’s stone then I don’t think anything could convince him to kill.

Well, the main difference between the two is that Aang is a full-on pacifist forced to fight, while Ed LOVES to fight, but would never kill. Making a pacifist kill is more shocking, all things considered. I do agree with you though.

@@lucariomew365 It's actually closer than it initially seems what keeps Jimmy from immediately dying isn't the strength of his inventions it's their hax. Jimmy can shrink Dexter's bots to the size of an ant while making himself bigger than a planet, he can slow down and speed up time, Jimmy also has Godard who's a whole plethora of different inventions, an interdimetional cube he can trap Dexter in and quite a few more stuff up his sleeve.

I had very low expectations for this one coming in (I mean, it's the Avatar vs an angry shrimp with a prayer-activated chemistry set) but the sass and one-liners in that fight scene made it completely worth it. Good work DB.

As much as I love both these characters, and the shows they're attached to, Ed never had a chance. Aang honestly wouldn't even have to use the Avatar State to beat Ed. It'd just be overkill. Ed is one of my favorite anime characters of all time, but he doesn't really scale to end of show Aang. The scale of his bending outshines any alchemy displayed by Ed. The most impressive alchemy Ed ever displayed was when he was enraged by the assumed death of Al, and attacked Father with all he had. Even that doesn't compare to Aang destroying airships, kicking giant rock pillars, and creating tsunamis. Honestly, you could take beginning of show, Avatar State Aang, and he'd probably win handily against end story Ed. I do think beginning of show to maybe around mid-show Ed could probably beat normal Aang, however. At the end of the day Aang is still a 12 year old monk, and while young himself, Ed is a genius alchemically and intellectually. He could probably outsmart Aang with relative ease. But going off the fact that these would both be end of show characters, Aang with his elemental mastery, and mastery over the Avatar State, he would win with little to no difficulty

I get the ending had to stick with the Death Battle code, but I'd love to see the alternate ending where Aang uses energybending to take away Ed's alchemy. It'd be equally final, more in-character, and a cool beat to combine the ending feats of both series.

Lightning Bending: Yes. Yes actually you are.
Lightning bending yes powerful but can be countered as Iroh and Zuko showed us when redirecting it. But blood bending really has no counter except for maybe air bending to the point of not being able to catch the target or some form of bending that doesn't let the blood bender focus such as earth bending or air bending which can be used and not actually seen in a sense, Air bending is actually the most powerful and versatile bending (Zaheer with his technique that takes air out of the lungs), Water bending is the most useful as it can be combined with every other bending force, Earth bending is the most defensive as you can use earth to block almost anything if used correctly, Fire bending is the most forceful as it can blow away almost anything and only gets stronger when combined with the other elements. So it really depends on the user when saying what technique or bending skill is the most powerful.
Alighieri the Divine you can break blood bending. Only 3 people have shown capabilities to redirect lightning in the entire series

Both are wrong, it wouldve been Yangchen. Out of our known avatars, Yangchen was far more willing to slay that Kyoshi. In the novels Kyoshi kills very few people, and only does so if absolutely necessary or on accident

I think that was mostly the spirit of the Koi Fish possessing him that killed those people but Aang was definitely complicit since he gave them a physical form to do those murders. 🤔

Aang REGULARLY murders armies. He just does it off-screen. He throws people into the ocean in full armor, ejects them into the sky, blows them off mountains, and tosses them off of airships, walls, towers, etc. And since most of these people are mooks (hell, most aren't even benders) there's no way they survive that.

Technically, earth benders can perform minor alchemy. You can find several examples in avatar of earth benders making specific shapes out of earth almost instantly
Basically, through Aang’s use of earthbending, he could easily counter Ed’s alchemy. Also, not even mention of the immensely powerful haha-suck-air-out-of-lungs Zaheer technique. This fight would be over in seconds if Aang really wanted it to be.
Yeah the only thing Ed can manipulate that Aang can’t is metal, but that hardly helps him win since he usually relies on the stone around him to fight

If Ed was actually willing to kill, all he would have to do is touch someone. He learned from Scar that you can use alchemy to destroy bodies and materials instantly without the reconstruction stage. Granted, Aang could probably just suck the air out of any vicinity and suffocate someone to death very quickly, but Ed is probably smart enough to think of an alchemical response to that. Ed is not only a walking, magic using human weapon, but an absolute genius.

The guy is just saying that *if* Ed had the intention to kill he could do it with a simple touch. Aang is much more powerful than Ed, but it's not like Ed wouldn't be able to fight back, Aang is not a god just a very powerful bender
@@gabrieldossantos1116 "if Ed had the intention to kill" If they are both given the intent to kill, Aang would go right into the avatar state and blood bend Ed while causing the air in his lungs to explode them. Not to mention that when he fought the firelord, he wrapped himself in the elements one of which was wind strong enough to decimate stone, withstand extreme fire bending and he was flying like a maniac the whole time to boot. It is never a fair fight for Ed.
It ultimately comes down to an unanswered question, how would bending scientifically work? Hypothetically the most probable method given magic formula is expressed through movement and connecting to the element, would be electromagnetism or hypothetically an elemental magnetism. Which presuming Ed could figure that yeah he could interfere with Aang's abilities. Possibly even shut down the Avatar state.
Problem is it all hinges on Ed figuring it out which would literally be an author's call since Ed is unquestionably smart enough to figure that out in a reasonable enough timeframe to win. They focus too much on power.
Sidenote a better matchup for each since they really gotta consider type, Aang is a goofball he's a chaos type, Edward Elric is calculated, a strategist type, he's on the complete opposite end of that spectrum.
Avatar Aang vs Strawhat Luffy(though after Gear 5 that's a squash it would at least be fun)
Edward Elric vs either Kurama, Kurapika, or maybe Jing the King of Bandits. (Lesser known character, highly recommend the series, it's probably one of the most imaginatively beautiful manga series ever and clearly a visual influence on other manga series like One Piece and Soul Eater)

The fight was a courtesy, Aang would have blown his lungs out before Ed could even work out that he was bending air. The Avatar state connects all previous incarnations and grants him their skills and wisdom….but yeah…goofy is a word for this situation none the less 😂

they didnt learn to bend their nations element "eventually" they unlocked it from magic turtles. No joke. Originally humanity lived in giant cities on the backs of magical turtles. if you spoke to your native one. It would grant you the element temporarily so you can hunt, you had to return it after. Bending was a weapon not ability. But the first avatar kept the ability and hid it from the turtle. After he was caught, he asked the turtle to keep it foolishly, and it agreed, however he had to be banished from society blah blah blah. You can watch it in Korra somewhere in season 2.
That doesnt sound accurate. Bison were the OG Airbenders, Dragons were fire, Moles were earthbenders, and the moon was the teacher for Waterbenders

The moon and ocean spirits are... odd cases, but the Lion Turtles probably naturally had the ability to bend chi, unlocking (and sealing away) elemental bending. They used this to give humans bending. Technically all humans COULD bend all four elements, it just didn't work out that way.
However, the Dragons, Sky Bison and Badger Moles probably naturally had chi that allowed them to bend a particular element. Maybe that's how the Lion Turtles found out elemental bending was a thing. Regardless, while the Lion Turtles GAVE humanity bending, the animals and spirits TAUGHT humanity bending.

@@ricardos6823 by the end of the series Edward gets pretty tall as well. You can even see the progression against Winry. In episode 10 when he's in the hospital, he's shorter than her. In the final episode, he's almost a full head taller, and probably about the same height as Hoenheim.

This death battle is probably the only realistic set up for a fight starting between two people.
Edward is just that kind that kind of guy to fight someone who he thought called him small.
Eh, I disagree. Sure, he used to hate being called small, but he got over that by the end of the series. I mean, check out Envy's death for example. He's called pipsqueak and that stuff so much in that scene but keeps completely calm.
To be fair, I'd say that Aang in the Avatar State is easily comparable to Father after having absorbed God, and Ed managed to defeat him... But it was highly contextual, with him receiving the help of an entire army shooting nonstop at Father so y'know... I wouldn't say Ed didn't stand a chance, he was far smarter than Aang and could have exploited a weakness given the opportunity, but standing alone, that wasn't really probable.

You know what always pissed me off about fullmetal everyone can draw perfect circles under gun point.
I would have to assume that if you bust your ass to acquire PHD levels of science and understanding the periodic table while having to remember all the intricate details that make a circle work, learning to draw isn’t a bad minor.

All bending comes from something so no person can just firebend without heat. In one episode when firebenders were in freezers they couldn't bend since there was no heat.
I love how half of these fights could be solved by basic communication.

Number 1: drone strike the h#ll out of them (this is not possible in the series but I am doing this research in the context of real life)
Number 2: snipe them when they’re not on guard (earth benders can do this because we’ve seen multiple times in the series that they can fling stones very far or firebenders can shoot lightning at them)
Number 3: avoid them on a full moon (this does not applies to Yakone & Tarrlock)
Number 4: hire your own bloodbender (preferably Katara)
Number 5: explosives, lots and lots of explosives (boomstick would be proud)
Number 6: just set any kind of trap
Note: I made a mistake in my last comment saying that I can counter Bloodbending, what I meant was that I can counter bloodbenders, after watching a few episodes I thought “why is everyone so stupid? There’s a million ways to deal with a bloodbender you just need some forward thinking, just set a trap it’s so simple”(please know that I was pretty young back then and didn’t know that our body is 70% water)
But my point is: from a practical perspective lightning bending is a thousand times more lethal and hard to counter than Bloodbending (except if you’re Aang)

Lightening bending is fine, but I'm far more terrified of bloodbending or magma bending; lightening comes out, you can either redirect it, or die quick not too concerned.
I do NOT want my body yanked around by the liquids within or to be suffocated with boiling earth. THOSE are terrifying ways to go out...
Waterbending is by far the most powerful form of bending from a lethality standpoint.
Waterbenders could just flash boil your internal fluids into steam. Every tissue would expand 1,000x in volume. You'd literally blow up like Doc Manhattan exploding Rorschach. They only didn't do anything with it because it was a kid's show. Also I think they only thought up Bloodbending too late in the series which is why it only comes up in like one and a half episodes.
Just to clarify: Aang didn't just react to the lightning, he was fast enough to see it, catch it, aim it at the fire lord, rethink his choices and then redirect the lightning to the side. He could've ended that fight right then and there even without the Avatar state, but he held back.
Georgi Ganchev without any training on that kind of Firebending too. Just a brief explanation from Zuko.
In real time he was able to jump to another boulder and turn and catch it while it was coming toward him, while he's consistently been tagged by slower objects or barely moving fast enough to just dodge them. That's clearly showing how slow the lightning was instead of how fast he is.
Actually he doesn't react to the lightning but he sees where the lightning bender point their finger.
@@FarhanNetizen_62 He still had to have actually pointing his finger at it AFTER the lightning was fired and in time for him to catch it, so yeah he definitely reacted to it. No pretending otherwise.
@@shepardoakenshieldprime3357 reaction time does not = raw mass movement speed. Plenty of anime characters have obscene reaction times but, can only run, jump, or otherwise travel at much more realistic speeds.
Also, many of the attacks you noted Aung was not fully aware of until later thus highlighting his reaction times. Not hurting the argument. Hes got a quick draw. He is not omnipotent and cannot see all angles at all times nor can he ignore inertia. He is pretty fast but, the show did highlight that it took effort to change from 1 high speed attack or dodge to another especially if it was a complete opposite direction.

@@RequiemPoete Still faster and more fluid than clapping your hands and reaching for whatever you want to manipulate. He doesn't have to touch the ground under Ed to bend it. And bending doesn't necessarily need specific moves to be used, like there are fighting forms in martial arts but you can still throw a punch without them.

Very true. Bending only has to be fancy when it’s a huge move or something that is used to do some weird trick, so Bending Fire is as simple as thrusting you’re arm out.

2:21 - Look at this scene. Gyatso's corpse is untouched, not a scorch mark on him, yet he's dead and surrounded by Firebenders who couldn't even reach him. Why? The answer is dark - Gyatso sucked all the air out of the room, suffocating himself and all the Firebenders and preventing any fire from manifesting, taking all his foes down, but killing himself in the process.

He is flying, and he can fly to a certain extent without his staff too. He just can’t go high up in the air with out a considerable amount of effort, and he can’t become lighter than air like the guy from Korra
