My take was far more morose. Leda’s daughter drowned that day. She took the doll in a PTSD longing because of her mistake as an absentee mother. Her ineptitude as a mother is shown in her misplacing and mistreating the doll in her rental (losing it in cabinets, tossing it in the trash). Ed Harris saying “there’s water in it” (the doll), and the worm coming out of its mouth later?! I’m sorry, that’s her dead daughter. At the end, the phone call from the sunny morning beach is fantasy/afterlife/misdirection/catharsis for righteous yearning/whatever. Her daughter died years ago. She died from an organ puncture and crashed car.
Also, I’m sorry for my manners. I really enjoyed your review. Insightful (especially comparisons to the book) and quite entertaining, thank you!
Exactly how it’s supposed to be interpreted my guess, cause how else would she just pull an orange out of thin air, this is her afterlife, which is exactly why the line “I’m not dead I’m alive” (or whatever it was I can’t remember) was so impactful and added so much to much more impactful
That's an interesting interpretation. Definitely worth a reexamination and would make way more sense in terms of what was happening to the doll, which I was wondering whether was real or not 🤔 Also gives the focus on the doll much more justification
Wow! I thought I was the only one that felt that way about Dakota Johnson.
She had two daughters.
Thank you!.. that's the only way it makes sense. When she's staggering and struggling during her holiday it's clear that sth even more devastating had happened after she came back to her family.. also, in the start of the film she gets a call only from her daughter Martha and it's Bianca who is lost at the beach!.. and in the finale, she's startled that they are both calling her.!. That means Bianca was dead.
She also seems to enjoy the call -while she's said she didn't like to speak to her daughters on the phone and she's opening the orange instead of neurotically peeling it off, which means she magically got over everything she was struggling with when she was alive, like she's instantaneously gotten rid of her traumas.
I didn’t mind the doll-tension baiting but some of those flashback scenes with Peter Sarsgaad were so tedious. I was like let’s get back to Greece and pick up the pace. Far too many extraneous arty-f@rty shots of peeling oranges and little girls with artfully wispy hair. I did like how Olivia provoked potentially dangerous confrontations to punish herself, including the cinema scene and admitting she stole the doll. I would’ve lied my a$$ off. I had at least five fibs ready to go.
Yes, I picked up on that too, that she wanted to punish herself through this risky behavior and pursuing dangerous people/situations. I also believe that she went on the island with a death wish, because her daughter was lost and she felt guilty..

Guys, you made me cackle with the age issue. I thought Leda was a 50 something woman, then they say 48. I just had to stop the movie and check Olivia Colman's age. Happens that I'm two years older than her She is 47! We all are different and age differently, but I don't diet, exercise or do Botox and don't look like her. I found her intriguing and mesmerizing, loved her wardrobe and vibe, but she didn't look in her forties and no one would say so.

Thank you so much for your very insightful and fun review. When I watched this film I was confused about the meaning of the title and thought it was the child missing in the beach. Olivia was the only calm person because she didn’t really care about that child; her sympathetic look of the scenes in the beach was towards the ordeal of nina, although an onlooker might have thought she was endearingly looking at the child. Also the scene where Olivia does not kiss her daughter’s wound was very pungent and showed that she didn’t want to bend to the forceful demands of her older daughter (who might have felt unloved and neglected) and this led her to disciplining that annoying child in the beach by taking her doll that although she cried over, she was at some point in the film bitting her. This was a parallel with what her older daughter seemingly did to her time and time again. After watching your review I can understand the meaning of that doll and how she perhaps wished to have back the feeling of innocence when looking after an inanimate object and thinking that that’s what being a mum is all about. The fact that the doll was giving out ooze showed that no matter how much she tried to care for something/ someone that’s what she got back in return. Lol - I like stories like this that make you think of more than what you’re just seeing. I now want to read this book and follow your film recommendations Nick!!! I agree with Joseph about the tension/suspense build up without an expected/anticipated outcome. I kept thinking, while viewing the flashbacks, that she was going to kill her children.

Young Leda was running around looking for her and we see a half second of the girl laying on the sand, at the edge of the water. And it made sense to me kinda when she kept the doll. And why she staggered to the ocean at the end.

@10:24 yes, the tension throughout, the glances, the walking alone, the awkward conversations, the stares, the DOLL. I defo feel like a few days of my life have been shaved off from the unrelenting tension in this film. haha
To me this film was all about the parallel between Olivia Coleman’s character and Dakota Johnson’s in that she sees Dakota is a hot to trot young mother, obviously looking to get busy with the concierge and of course Olivia was flirting with him too. Its a “woman’s” film very much as it explores the fact that the character broke up her marriage and left her kids after an affair and all the guilt, as you said, involved with that as she looks back and we get the flashback scenes. The GUILT aspect is probably the main theme and womens freedom . Its interesting that none of the characters are sympathetic really except maybe the Ed Harris expat who tries to get together with Olivia , she resists it as it’s clear she does not find the OLDER GUY really attractive enough, he is the safe pick but she does not go for that. Its about womens sexuality a great deal in my opinion. I give it a B+. Thanks!

Um, I don’t buy that the professor would so casually hand over the keys to that pair for their trysting. She was a control freak, it seemed. I would never do that, give keys to strangers to get it on in a space I paid for. That’s a recipe for disaster. I don’t see her doing that.
Thank you for explaining the film, especially the part about the hitchhikers at dinner. The doll posters were so funny 😂 but I never really understood the point of the the rowdy family (Nothing ever happens!). The Cinematography was Bellissimo, beautiful, engaging, and charming. Dakota was at her best & Olivia was so real. These characters with a more developed script would have been perfect 👍🏻.

Informative, I was looking for a review that explained Leida being stabbed. At this point, I mines well just watch it lol.
I liked when Nina asked why she came back to the girls and she said "I missed them" and called herself selfish. It's interesting to think of her character just doing what makes her happy. And how having other people in your life can complicate that. Or conflicting desires and how to bridge those.

I felt the age thing was a symbol for her opting out of parenthood, and one of the central tenets adulthood. She got an extra adolescence that most people dont get. Less about her physical appearance, but more that she didn't do the full hog of parenting and doesn't have the accompanying "battle scars".
I thought she was going to return the doll and take the girl. She related to but also judgemental of Nina for the scary husband. Or kill Nina. Or the husband so Nina would resent her life less. Or some confrontation with the boisterous family. I definitely misread the trailer. I enjoyed the performances though.

i just saw it...... and yes. I think the marketing did this movie a LITTLE dirty... because i went into it thinking it was a bit like "uuuuuh what happened to the little girl at the beach, what did olivia DO.. and what is she hiding from her past that she is so ashamed of" .... But it was very slow burn drama. and i guess it was just not my cup of tea... i love the cast and director but it is just not for me.
Finally saw this tonight in chi town. Loved this movie and am now terrified of having kids.
I didn't pick up on the point of self punishment. That's really interesting i kind of felt the doll was another symbol of Leda's compulsiveness and selfishness, and attempt to nurture the doll without the responsibility of real parenthood. Very telling when she got tired of it she put it in the bin, and then retrieved it again. Similar to her own daughters. The central theme is there is a price for freedom. Leda knows she isn't the maternal type, so went for freedom. She struggles to reconcile what it cost her. She is also at an age where this freedom is morphing into lonliness and isolation, she seems unsure how to navigate this as an older woman, with few romantic pursuits to serve as welcome distractions.
Very interesting take on the whole "having it all" conversation.
great cast, great concept, great directorial debut.. pointless tension with the family from queens, way too long, Leda is a POS to her kids, her husband, Elena and Nina. Selfishness was portrayed very well.

Uh…..Olivia Coleman happens to only be 47 years old and for her to tell Lyle that she was 48 makes sense as her birthday is coming up on the 30th. But i understand what you meant when you said she looks more like a 58 year old. I mean she already played Queen Elizabeth in her 50s on The Crown so I don’t think she would have cared if they added 10 more years in the plot.
I think the movie was somewhat misleading in the first couple of scenes. I was actually thinking that Leda's young daughter had gone missing, years ago, and she was fixated on Nina because she thought it was her daughter. Then about half way through, I started to understand the dynamic a little more, but it took a minute to switch gears to then put the other scenario together. I do think the performances were excellent, but the flashbacks took way too long to explain what was really going on. I started skipping through some of them to find out what was happening. I rarely do that, in a movie, so I think the lack of understanding of the actual plot, is a flaw in an otherwise interesting film. People that had already read the book did not go through that same frustration of wondering what was really going on.
Perfectly summed up my experience as well. I'm here because a few of the pieces needed to be re-explained to me due to my FF button. lol

First time here & I really enjoyed listening to your synopsis…however I give this movie a 1/5 stars. I felt bamboozled as well, it was sooo slow & I felt nothing at the end. It absolutely was not a psycho-thriller just a drama…& the doll was creepy 😩

I know it's not a film, but have you seen her in Fleabag? I have no place recommending stuff, but I'd say it's worth a watch. :)
You’re right about Dakota, she gets to be a movie star bc her parents were both huge stars and both had star quality which she lacks, imo. On the other hand, the lady who plays young Leda does have a star quality and interesting presence onscreen. I’m glad I’m watching it. I went and looked at the book on audible and I might get it.

They (Hollywood Engine) just keep trying to make Dakota Johnson a star the girl cannot. Full on shade. Dakota Johnson's only talent in Hollywood is her connections or bloodline. Glad you said it! So mediocre. Her mom had it, she doesn't. Melanie Griffin, before the plastic surgery, just a quality about her. It wasn't just looks, I guess it was charm or charisma. While being beautiful, was just damn cute.

Good acting; very slow film; all characters are unlikeable except possibly Ed Harrls' character & Lead's young husband.
I actually felt bad for the young husband: impotent, cheated on, then left. He needed to sort out himself… another film in the making?!?
Great video. Appreciate your insight. I didn’t like this movie. I get it that parenting is really hard but damn. This was up there with mommy dearest. When Olivia Colman would NOT kiss her daughters boo boo. Like damn. How did you ever think you should procreate. There was really nothing to gain from this film. The theme is like “Some people out there are truly terrible and they cause pain and suffering to anyone in their wake and nothing can be done about it”. Truly sad ideas in this film. 0/5 stars.

Lida probably dies in the car crash and her waking up on the beach the next morning and talking to her daughters is probably her afterlife. As she is talking to her daughters in her afterlife maybe her daughters died long before she took her beach vacation and the life she created for her daughters is probably characters she made up in her mind to suppress the memories of their deaths.
Yes, and older Leda looks her age easily, and younger Leda almost looks forty … or she has a lot of maturity, it seems.
I agree with yall! It sucked! Lol yall are just to nice. I guess this movie had more of a strong meaning however I kept trying to figure out all this random crap going on. It was weird, until I realized this is a type of movie that was more about meaning. But to be honest, it was a waste of time with to much randomness. I feel like this meaningful movie could have been done in a more straight forward way where us as mothers can relate realistically.

This movie annoyed me. The camera constantly on the chin of Leda's character like she was some beautiful lady, close up on her face for no reason at all. Made her look so unappealing. 48 ? No way more like 60. The actress forgot to work out hard to get in shape & look 48 for the part.
Leda is unlikable but everyone is attracted by her ? The movie is disappointing. Dakota acted so weird in some scenes, like she was possessed. She looks beautiful cse she is but not a great acting job. Maybe the editing 🤔 was off.
