In the book, Jake is the girlfriend. . .and the janitor. 🤯

I think that's my frustration with the movie--after a 1st look. It does not convey the multiple personalities of Jake at all (or maybe it does if I watch this a second time), and that was the intriguing aspect of the book. I plan to read "Ice" by Anna Kavan--so thank you for mentioning that! Perhaps it will help me to have a better appreciation of the movie.

@@latoyagray3667 it's not Jake having multiple personalities, it's Jake (an old man working as a janitor) reminiscing on his past

@@clanofclams2720 I beg to differ, my interpretation of the book is that Jake, the main character had multiple personalities. It's been a few months since I've read the book, so I am re-reading it again. But, that's the beauty of a book like this because it can be interpreted in different ways!

@@latoyagray3667 Well I suppose you're free to think that way but from what I read it was just an old man thinking back on his life and regretting all of his missed opportunities with women he could never have

Jake IS the Janitor. That’s not really an interpretation but more of something that is essential to understanding the plot.

When you look at the movie from his point of view, it makes perfect sense. I didn't get that while watching it but now looking back it gives every scene so much meaning

In the book, there are several chapters where you're meant to think the fictional girlfriend is talking about breaking up, but it's really the janitor thinking of commiting suicide. The janitor is Jake, who saw a girl when he was younger and was too shy to talk to her, so he wrote a whole fictional version of his life with her, but he imagines even the fictional version would eventually leave him. He eventually commits suicide in the highschool in a dramatic fashion.
I found the movie very slow. It could have been a lot shorter and sadly was not as clear. I wouldn't have even known what was going on had I not read the book.

    Maybe think about:
If YOU were a lonely janitor in a school, where you're isolated, invisible - save for mean girls who mimmick your flabby waddle - what would you think about? ...day after day?
Maybe (just maybe) you'd spend the endless hours of inhaling floor polish (NOT varnish) imagining how things might have been, if you'd had someone to love and share your life with, instead of having to care for elderly parents, who'd denigrated and undermined you your whole life; the cause of your negative self esteem, and the reason for your isolation and loneliness.
There's the movie right there ...no philosophy major required!

I just watched the movie! Oh what an experience! Please, if you haven't seen it, please watch it. It is something else!
After I watched it, it made me feel like I just came from a dream, in a way it is. A daydream. Well, we think that daydreams are little bite of happy journey to fantasy land but in reality, it is a reflection of what is missing in our lives and what we can't have. It's sadness and depression wrapped in a flash gift paper to hide what it truly means. This movie still makes me cry.

Just read the book and watched the movie. The book was creepy and unsettling and I was caught off guard to how well the movie portrayed that even though I was already prepared for it. Actually, I think it was more intense. Another fun review!

I haven't read the book, but while I was watching the movie I got the feeling Jake is the janitor (and maybe the girlfriend as well), and the movie is somekind of a Mulholland Drive 2001: A Space Odyssey in the janitor's head (before he freezes to death?).
I liked how the movie played around horror and thriller tropes, but not being a full on genre movie.
When I started it I didn't know what it is.
I thoguth it is a regular drama :)
It was cool to figure things out on the go, however the third act was bit too tiring in my opinion.
The whole flick could be 10, 15 minutes shorter.
But I guess that was the point of the whole thing, to give you that feeling of an exhausting journey.
    Cheers guys!

Really enjoyed the film even with the confusion - best explanation I've heard is its in fact all from the bf's perspective and 'I'm thinking of ending things' applies to his fake relationship because he's 'thinking of ending things' for himself...literally

This movie is all in the title. All in janitor Jake's head, all the characters were created by his imagination and memories. The last shot of the car covered in snow outside the school explained the whole point of the story. Jake finally did it.

haven’t seen it or read the book, to me from how they describe jake’s character, he knows this town is a liminal space so he brings people into it, trying to trap them in a time-insensitive town to watch him be a musician and be his friend fOrEvEr. maybe the janitor is a reflection of his fear of mortality, bleak and sad, lonely.
