    I saw this movie last night. It builds a really strong atmosphere where you're constantly thinking something bad is going to happen. There's a lot of casual cruelty by many of the characters yet also moments where those characters show genuine love and compassion for one another. That's unusual in a movie yet it's also true to life. Character's actions can be threatening at times helping to build that atmosphere of unease. The acting is superb. Olivia Coleman in particular is excellent. The camera stalks her constantly never more than a couple of feet away from her. She gives off lots of subtle clues as to what she is feeling. She wants to be on her own and hates it when at several points in the movie her peaceful idyll is interrupted by groups of noisy interlopers. This is a woman very much haunted by her past, by her actions towards her children when they were young, but we see through the flashbacks what brought her to that place by her difficulty in dealing with the whole kit and caboodle of motherhood and her own personal ambitions in her work. But the movie never judges her. Ultimately we have sympathy and even empathy for her. It's a haunting film showing life in all it's complexities. Olivia Coleman gives the best performance by a leading actress in any movie I have seen this year and would undoubtedly deserve an Oscar.

    Some of us know that mothers are not necessarily good people. Movies brave enough to show the uncomfortable truth are progress.

    Has anyone ever notice how when it comes to movies about mothers and or they're relationship with there children it seems like it is all about exploring the struggles of motherhood and so forth but when it comes to father center dramas it pretty much boils down to they are distant.

    And since you re-mention NIGHTMARE ALLEY I saw it the other day on Movies TV Network and I liked the original so much better.

    The way they both frame their Xmas Trees is really striking.
    I’m sure it says something about their personalities but I’m not sure what.
    Good job guys!

    I loved this film but I agree 100% with Alonso's comment. I feel that the flashbacks were probably happening at exactly the same moment in the book, and maybe some liberties with their placement would've been helpful. I think Campion's choice of making The Power of the Dog linear as opposed to the fragmented narration in the book was a smarter choice.

    i don't know what alonso means by too literary. i didn't know the movie was based on a book until watching this review. i wish he expanded on that more

    I liked this movie. Its really deep and very well acted. The casting is great and the narrative is very "in the moment" type which makes it very spontaneous. But its really slow and it requires great patience to watch and appreciate. Nevertheless its very well done. I give it a 7.5. And great performances all round especially from Olivia Newman and the actress playing the younger Olivia Newman, or Leda. As for Oscar buzz, I think Jessica Chastain is still the front runner followed by Newman followed by Kirsten Stewart.

    I wish Alonso would actually mention some details of the times he thought it was too literal/literary instead of just saying there were several. I have read the book, seeing it just before finishing reading it. They are both very similar even despite a location shift. I liked both but I am also a Ferrante fan.

    Our society generally does not have much sympathy or praise for deadbeat dads, who are often portrayed as lazy, selfish and irresponsible. Why should we treat moms who do the same thing any different?

    7.5 & Nightmare gets a 2!?! This movie was soo slow, good God! Everything dragged on! I got the point in the first 25 mins. How many movies was Maggie in, she should know how to move along a movie? I had to FF a few times, just to get thru it. It was making me mad. Any crazy person would have moments of clarity to take the doll into the sea with her to get rid of it. The whole thing dragged on. Glad I saw it streaming. And Alonso! My point on Nightmare, if you didn't see the 75 yr old original, it's a great film. Way, way better than this. These two reviews are making me question your integrity.

      He was just stating that it felt like he was watching a book-to-screen adaptation at certain points but still praised it for how ambitious it was. I'd rather have an honest film criticism that analyzes all of the subtle nuances. He made perfect sense and it's just an opinion.

    • @Omar-zo6ro
      @Omar-zo6ro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I respect his opinion but I don't understand it either. The flashbacks just kept turning up the heat on this boiling pot of a film and complimented the scenes very well.

    • @MrChaseBlue
      @MrChaseBlue 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Omar-zo6ro it gives away too much. It felt like straight from the book, more literary, and less cinematic. The mystery and enigma of this film is the most compelling part, and that dissipates half an hour in.

    • @Omar-zo6ro
      @Omar-zo6ro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrChaseBlue well I wouldn't say it dissipates half an hour in, I would say maybe an hour in, but nonetheless the mystery was not the point for me. The dark psychological aura surrounding this movie for me was not a "mystery" and more about repression. She's repressed something that is leaking out in all of her interactions which is the most interesting part of the film.

      In a book, the author tells you what the characters are thinking at every step. In a movie, you normally see the action but not what the characters are thinking. In this movie, you see a freaking flashback every few seconds just to show you what the character is thinking about. Not only is it not cinematic, it is annoying.
