This scene reflects real life , at the time of Roman gladiators, quite well , because , actually, the winning fighter wasn't compelled to kill his losing opponent . Moreover , none of them died at the very first defeat , and this is related to economical reasons : in fact , gladiators belonged to their owners in some sort of stables and , therefore, if one of them died , it was a pecuniary loss . I feel like many people don't quite understand the level of respect that Maximus had from the legions. He was slated to be the next emperor, by choice of the people. He had fought long and hard and brought honor and glory to Rome, aspects the people valued greatly. He was betrayed, and thought lost to the barbarians. When he shows back up, the people see how he is forced to fight for his life, and he still chooses honor over an easier victory. The praetorian guard, dressed in purple, were at one point directly under his control. More than likely, he served with and commanded most of those men surrounding him. He had their respect long before they took their oaths to protect the emperor and praetors. In the eyes of the legions, he is not only their emperor also one of their praetors.
No….Maximus had no desire to be Emperor. And Marcus Aurelius wanted Rome to be a Republic again. With no emperor…..but to hold regular elections again for Consuls. Remember in the movie, Marcus Aurelius had told Maximus…”Rome, is to be a Republic again.” But Commodus put an end to that dream.
I realize Tigris of Gaul had been in retirement for 5 years and this certainly has to be taken into account regarding 'coliseum rust' during the fight. Despite this, he had the unfair advantages of two weapons versus 1 for Maximus and significantly more facial protection his Helmut apparatus provided. Only seconds into the fight though it's clear that Maximus likely would have sufficiently injured him with the head strikes at 1:24 and 1:33 to render him defenseless...had he not had the reinforced facial and head protection. It would have made the additional and cruel measure of the tigers used against Maximus a moot point.
Yeah bro dual wielding weapons as a gladiator was more or less a crowd pleasing tactic to demonstrate skill and get them excited. As far as head protection goes, there are pros and cons to it. Badass fight scene though
Dual-wielding is not an advantage if you are unskilled. You need to be ambidextrous and be able to use both weapons simultaneously to make it work. For the average soldier, having a shield for extra protection is much more effective.
@@AphroVenator The only situation I can think of where dual wielding has an advantage over sword (or any other appropriate weapon) and board is if at least one of the weapons you're holding is designed to *hard counter* a shield or some other vital piece of your opponent's equipment. In case people don't know, the actor that played Tigris is the guy that played Thorogrim in Conan the Barbarian as well as the "do steroids make you deaf" guy in The Running Man. Good friend of Arnold's.
Also one of the bad guys when Arnold and friends raid the communist camp at the beginning of Predator. If I remember, I think he was the guy that shoots the hostage in the head.
Never noticed before but the Gladiator Champion uses the heavier axe as his secondary weapon while using a lighter gladius as his main. It's normally the other way round. Interesting style that he uses the axe to parry a lot as well. Guy was probably ambidextrous or equally strong and skilled with both hands. I thought this would be rare but Maximus also switches to his off hand as well unless it is part of a technique I'm unaware of.
"equally strong"-- That man is Sven-Ole Thorsen, Bodybuilder and World's Strongest Man 1983. He was--but wasn't just--a training buddy of Arnold. He's built like Arnold himself and at the time of this movie was probably still lifting 500-800 pounds of weights in an average workout session on the regular. So yes, he was probably equally strong and skilled with both hands lol.
@@unitedstatian He's used to fighting common folk and throttling them no matter what he wears. The armor is just fashion to keep the audience on his side. Then he met a real warrior and it all back fired.
I know everyone has there opinions but I believe the reasons why Maximus spared Tigris 1. Because Commodus and Maximus were mortal hated enemies and he did it to defy and piss off the Emperor 2. Because Tigris wasn't his enemy and he wasn't on his list and quest for retaliation salvation and his quest of vengeance like Commodus was 3. But like in historical history Even with Commodus dead the Roman Empire started to decay and began its journey of Downfall and destruction
16.11.2024 5:02 freeze the picture, the tiger on the left. 22 soldiers stand and surround Maximus and 10 more soldiers run and will immediately join them, together that's 32 soldiers. 5:07 - 5:10 Commodus and Quintus are coming. 5:15 - 5:20 Commodus approaches Maximus and Quintus stands with his soldiers, altogether 33 soldiers surround Maximus and Commodus. the number 33 is considered very significant in Freemasonry and there is no coincidence in this scene. Hollywood always shows you the truth, you just have to see it. p.s. Night Watch, thank you for the upload 👍

That shield blow is basically a knock out but worse trauma to the posterior palate and sphenoid bone in the brain rattling the midbrain. I love how Maximus has Gods favor throughout this whole movie.
The Gods of war and battle that is, because the Gods of fate definitely did him a number, as no amount of revenge would ever make him happy and in peace again.
My dad and I went to see this when it was in theaters when I was in my teens. We didn't know much about the film but I had always loved military history - mostly modern - but after seeing this masterpiece I read all of Caesar's works (or those of they who knew him - we will never know) and learned about how Roman society from the lowliest slave to the Praetorian Guard to the Emperor (or Senators pre-Imperial Age) worked in regards to other civilizations in the centuries before and immediately after. Gladiator is a classic, I'm just not happy that Russel Crowe sees the "sequel" in a bad light. I mean I'll watch it, but not in a theater.

In case people don't know, the actor that played Tigris is the guy that played Thorogrim in Conan the Barbarian as well as the "do steroids make you deaf" guy in The Running Man. Good friend of Arnold's.
Holy shit, he's the security guard from Running Man?
@@jasoncandanedo1034 yup!
Also one of the bad guys when Arnold and friends raid the communist camp at the beginning of Predator. If I remember, I think he was the guy that shoots the hostage in the head.
He also played “Tank” in the 80s show Captain Power And The Soldiers Of The Future.
Being able to defy the emperor as a slave in Coliseum - that’s true freedom.
'Maximus, Maximus the Merciful!' 😂
They embrace him like one of their own❤
Probably Russell's best work, maybe we've not seen his best yet. I hope
He was fabulous in A BEAUTIFUL MIND and in MASTER AND COMMANDER.
@@AlanSmitheeman beat me to it lol
Russell did a great bit recently as a murdering redneck..
Heard his recent work in "The Pope's Exorcist" was phenomenal.
Simply the best gladiator movies of all time.
Love for Maximus and hate for Commodus.
Great actors.
When I think of Russell Crowe, this is the first movie that comes to mind. A great role.
Who is back here after watching the Gladiator 2 trailer?
Some people can be killed but never defeated❤️he always wins because he's still a human being
Публика крови требует , ничего не изменилось со времён Римской империи. Это лучший фильм из всех фильмов про гладиаторов!
As a kids me understand 0% enjoying battle 100% . Now im rewatching feeling Nostalgic
If ever an Oscar was deserved, this is it. Crowe deserved other Oscars too but i'm glad he got it for Gladiator
The armour is unrealistic along with the face visor.
@@88Musk
I was JUST thinking the same thing.
@@88Musk The visor alone would have led to his death in under 10 seconds, his field of vision was basically zero while wearing it.
@@unitedstatian He's used to fighting common folk and throttling them no matter what he wears. The armor is just fashion to keep the audience on his side. Then he met a real warrior and it all back fired.
I'll never quit loving this movie Gladiator 👏🏼✊🏼
They both good actors - that's why it's best movie of all time - good story director and actor.
I know everyone has there opinions but I believe the reasons why Maximus spared Tigris
1. Because Commodus and Maximus were mortal hated enemies and he did it to defy and piss off the Emperor
2. Because Tigris wasn't his enemy and he wasn't on his list and quest for retaliation salvation and his quest of vengeance like Commodus was
3. But like in historical history Even with Commodus dead the Roman Empire started to decay and began its journey of Downfall and destruction
Immigration is what finally caused the fall of the Roman Empire.
Watched this in history class today but it was so good so I'm here again
There is only one more life to take 😮😮😮😮
Great Clip
Hello from India 🇮🇳, Great Movie.
Ridley Scott should have won best director. People still love this movie decades later.
Ridley Scott🎉 His magnificent master piece . Film and the most wonderful music through out just sublime❤
Now we are free is my all time favourite piece of music.

freeze the picture, the tiger on the left.
22 soldiers stand and surround Maximus and 10 more soldiers run and will immediately join them, together that's 32 soldiers.
5:07 - 5:10
Commodus and Quintus are coming.
5:15 - 5:20
Commodus approaches Maximus and Quintus stands with his soldiers, altogether 33 soldiers surround Maximus and Commodus.
the number 33 is considered very significant in Freemasonry and there is no coincidence in this scene.
Hollywood always shows you the truth, you just have to see it.
p.s.
Night Watch, thank you for the upload 👍
Thorgrim fought well despite still recovering from a giant spike in the abdomen.
❤❤❤❤😢😢😢😢
He will be forgotten in a month......
Here we are 25 years later
i don't think the character is talking about the movie
I watched this movie today and literally a masterpiece
Thought the interaction of Commodus and Maximus was outstanding. Despite the goading, Maximus was the one that controlled the conversation.
What makes maximus so dangerous in this scene maximus beats his opponent with his opponents own weapon straight savagery!!!
And he defys the Emperor, and lives to fight another day knowing the crowd is with him..
This masterpiece doesn’t need a sequel… at all 🤦♂️
Disney of today and its billions couldn't beat this film
This is one of my favorite films!!!
Spectacular!
My favorite movie of all time...Troy was OK but I wanted to see more of Ajax in Troy. In this segment, nothing compares to gladiator; the cast, the story and the locations are just magnificent.
That shield blow is basically a knock out but worse trauma to the posterior palate and sphenoid bone in the brain rattling the midbrain. I love how Maximus has Gods favor throughout this whole movie.
Gotta love Mars
The Gods of war and battle that is, because the Gods of fate definitely did him a number, as no amount of revenge would ever make him happy and in peace again.
THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even when they made him a slave, he remained free
Maximus, Maximus the Merciful!
A PERFECT movie!
Loved him very much, had pity on him wish he never died after all
Commodus the emperor's sister is good hearted woman
Top 5 Movies of its genre of all time.
Definitely one of the most intense and dramatic moments of this classic film 🎥 🎞
Such a great movie!!
Mükemmel bir film.vizyona ilk girdiği günü hatırlıyorum.halâ aynı kalitede.
amazing fight scenes!
This movie is like the TRUTH, It always gives it's original taste abd impact each time it is served. Gladiator movie touches every aspect of life from love to, politics, humanity, and psychological strength, even immortality ( what we do in life, echoes in eternity)
Learn to use its/it's correctly.
Incredible sceane, the big guy was awesome figting and the compassion tha maximus had for him, but nothing amazing me more than commodus eyes, it's holow, without life and stripped off soul, Joaquin Phoenix is great.
Imagine being those guards, learning of the history, then giving the respect.
Crow won the best actor award, but the following year he was totally ripped off not winning again for " A Beautiful Mind"
