I'm a little bit surprised this needs to be explained... He's giving an insincere salute as a mockery of the man who arrested him. Quintus only obtained his station through betrayal, Maximus gave this salute knowing it would not be returned.

Parasite, The Babadook, Her, Joker, The Irishman, Mad Max: Fury Road, Grand Budapest Hotel, The Wailing, Get Out, The Wolf of Wallstreet, Hateful Eight, The Master... the list goes on and on and is quite diverse in terms of genre. To be honest, I even think that there are more movies that I love from 2007 to 2023 than from 1990-2006... But that's quite the subjective matter.

By far my favorite all time movie scene. Watched it over 100 times and tears popping up in my eyes every time when he speaks the sentence: I am Maximus Meridius Decimus, commander of the Northern legion … What a way to express loyalty to the former leadership that was criminally removed.
I was in high school when this came out and I still remember 1/2 the boys walking into our A level lesson on British government and politics quoting verbatim from the movie. The teacher took the register and got to one joker who said “my name is maximised decimus meridius, commander of the armies of the north etc etc”. All the girls in theclass were like “what the hell is wrong with these guys” and the teacher was rolling his eyes and smirking. It is such a generation defining movie for me. It is still the best action epic out there in my view (along with last of the mohicans which is amazing as well)

My all time favourite movie. I’ve watched this scene over and over again but it was only after a while that I realised that Russell Crowe must be ambidextrous as he wields his sword in both his right and left hand. Fun fact - at 4.29 as he starts to turn his horse the sword is in his left hand but as he completes the turn the sword has “magically” transferred to his right hand!
Most people dont know but Russel Crow didnt really follow the script on this film. I thinks its that what makes it so iconic. The man is a master at his craft!!!

My all time favourite movie. I’ve watched this scene over and over again but it was only after a while that I realised that Russell Crowe must be ambidextrous as he wields his sword in both his right and left hand. Fun fact - at 4.29 as he starts to turn his horse the sword is in his left hand but as he completes the turn the sword has “magically” transferred to his right hand!

I know about it but it never catch my eye. Because I watch it with the feels of the scene instead of just watching with bare eyes.
Most people dont know but Russel Crow didnt really follow the script on this film. I thinks its that what makes it so iconic. The man is a master at his craft!!!
