Being able to hear the sand being thrown, swords hitting each other and the crowd cheer on those speakers was amazing. My dad is now 67 years old and this is still his favorite movie.
They forgot to mention - in case it isn't obvious to some - that Commodus severely wounded Maximus just before they went into the arena. Commodus stabbed Maximus from behind unexpectedly, hoping this would level the playing field for him. Sorry, didn't work.
Same things seem to be happening when ambition meets lack of character and skill: no matter what mighty people are always mighty. Is that his wife and child watching him? Now they Will have to die with him, too. One shouldnt marry a coward…
That door was Death's Door. I'm cannot really remember the full belief, but dying was as easy as stepping through a door. Maximus Orrileas's wife and child were waiting just beyond that door. Maximus's was at the point of death, and was fighting even at that point for the justice he deserved after the Emporer had his wife and child killed. Maximus was everything the Emporer was not. Loved by his wife and child, his men would follow him to death's door and beyond, skilled in both war and politics, and a servant of the people. Hell, even the Emporer's sister and nephew loved Maximus over the Emporer. Hence the fight, hence the cheating and hence the stabbing to even the field.
i love how maximus is already at the edge of death, he even sees his afterlife during the fight, which by that point is probably even less important to him than prior
One choice from Ridley Scott that I highly appreciate is how even though it was clear the whole crowd was rooting for Maximus and against Commodus, they all stay silent when Maximus actually wins. Idk why but that just allows me to feel and appreciate the satisfaction of the moment even more.
The audience in the coliseum was in shock. It reflects how the movie theater audience is feeling in that scene. For that moment we are a spectator in that arena. I agree that it was a genius decision to hammer in that finality of the event.

When the Praetorian Guard refuses to provide Commodus a sword...absolutely priceless. Your reign of terror has come to a very sad end. What a fantastic film!
Notice Quintus in this scene: he has been working under Maximus, an honourable man and his commander, and then has to work under Commodus, a complete bastard who insisted that two of his soldiers be executed because they allowed Maximus to escape, and in this moment, he denies Commodus a sword from both him and his soldiers because he sees the chance that Maximus may free them all from Commodus' tyranny. I LOVE that about this movie!
@@forgipper Commodus would have had them deprived of their Roman citizenship and then crucified......or maybe the soldiers, seeing that's how it was going to be, would have done for Commodus themselves. A few Roman Emperors did actually die at the hands of the Praetorian Guard.

I hate to be that guy again (second time today) but Zimmer is a fraud who plagiarizes and steals from other composers. He runs a company, Remote Control Productions, in which he hires other composers to score his films (sometimes multiple per film) and then he takes all the credit under the "Hans Zimmer" label. This soundtrack was very likely to have been composed by additional composers. This specific track is great but it's ironically also plagiarizing Wagner's style and the part where the shields raise is taken heavily from Henryk Górecki´s Third Symphony
@@soundwhisperer1058 Commodus was a terrible gladiator and could only beat unarmed cripples when he had a leverage advantage. No way he's taking down maximus. Would be a cool ending tho.
He went from flailing at Maximus in desperation and denial to clinging to him in disbelief, as he realized Maximus was the last human he’d be connected with in any way, ever again. As a kid we nicknamed Commodus “the puke” because of his behavior but as an adult we see he’s actually a victim of pride who never “measured up” and it turned him into something pitiful - only validating his insecurities. The knife in his throat by his “own hand” is a symbol of how he killed himself trying to prove it all wrong. You can see in his eyes by the time he realized how far it had all gone, the knife was already in his throat and he knew it was too late. This movie is a work of art.
Despite Commodus having trained in swordsmanship all his life and the fact Maximus was gravely wounded truly shows how much out of his league Maximus was for him. Years of training is nothing vs years of actual combat experience. Made for a pretty good fight tho.
its the difference between choreographed swordplay versus fighting for ones life. Those flashy moves look great as a set piece, but are a fighting mans dream come true. Commodus was never going to win, even the cheap shot wasnt really effective as again a fighting man is going to be hurt, but they train to push through it. Its a cool on screen version of the random dude who bought a gun and sits it on their mantle vs an active duty soldier who has served in actual deployments. Theres only 1 winner if they suddenly came to blows
You can see the desperation in Commodus eyes when Maximus aim the dagger back at him and he repeatedly hit Maximus in the shoulder is also a desperate attempt to escape his death.
It is in this moment when Commodus realised he fucked up. Had he simply cancelled the games and make up some excuses the people probably would've been okay and leave poor Russell rot in a dark cell.
This is the point in history that the empire was crumbling hence the games to begin, bread and circuses to distract from the crumbling foundations. They are currently doing it now with the current sporting distraction.
The first time I ever saw this movie I was a kid, hanging out at my best friend's house. His father was blind and had a huge theater room, this was one of his favorites. I remember him lighting up with joy when this scene came on. Great movie.
It’s one of those movies where the antagonist outshines the protagonist. Russel was good but Joaquim was incredible. I fell in love with his genius for a good second after this film. He is no short of superb.
@@WhoWho569I completely disagree that in this film the villain outshines the hero. Crowe had an equally difficult task here - with such a bright villain, create an equally bright hero. And he did it brilliantly. Moreover, when Phoenix as Commodus could use almost the entire palette of his acting techniques, Crowe had the task of conveying all the emotions and inner world of the hero with much less external manifestations. His character speaks and shows much less, but the viewer feels all his emotions perfectly.
Three things I noticed after more than a decade: 1. They clearly didn't understand how adrenaline can make you ignore pain. Maximum in-lore likely used it in combination with his rage to at least ignore the pain, even the slash wound he received. 2. Commodus was likely never injured before. Ever. Being slashed like that must have felt traumatizing, made him feel mortal for the first time. 3. Similar to #2, Commodus likely never "lost" a fight before. That means no one ever tried to fight him seriously, ever. This prevented him from learning basic CQC and wee the difference the moment they decide to throw hands.
It’s funnier in history of how he was actually killed more than in movies Commodus was never killed in arenas, but he was assassinated by gladiator I believe while Commodus was taking a bath
I saw this in the theaters when it came out. What an inspirational movie! I still get sucked into watching it anytime it's on any movie channels, despite seeing it probably 20+ times. The cast, the crew, the cinematics, the soundtrack (I'm a huge Zimmer fan), and an epic plot. It's on my top 5 all-time movies for sure, maybe even top 3.
Well, emperor's sons in general, have tendency to be arrogant sobs, don't they? But then again, he crippled him before the duel remember? Not so arrogant after all, ha. All that aside, main motive here is unimaginable blinding jealousy. His own father picked a total stranger, a low life, over him!! Over Crown prince! I don't think that any of as regular Joes can even start to comprehend how humiliating and degrading for young prince that was.
What I like is the intamcy between them as he drives the knife through his neck and you can see the momentary pity in the eyes of Maximus as he gently and tenderly lays him down. Don't care what anyone says, that small detail is what made him such a fucking savage. To truly defeat your enemy you have to know them intamately and empathise with them.
It’s stupid that Joaquin got so much hate because of the character he played when it first came out. Gladiator is a great film, my dad even cried to it, it’s just annoying that ppl forget the character and actor are not the same person.
@@andrewg.carvill4596 Well if that doesn't put you off visiting a country again I don't know what will! lol. In fairness, this could be why actors try to avoid typecasting. @@KameronDAaron the Emperor is adept but his opponent defeated three tigers and an undefeated champion simultaneously. Don't wound what you cannot kill.....in time.
Watched this movie when I was young, only now am I realizing why everyone hated Commodus. Challenging a mortally wounded man while you’re at full strength and health, Max dropping his sword to match Com in a fair hand to hand, only for Com to cheat once again and pull a knife. AND STILL LOSE
I always liked the idea that as he dropped his sword, Maximus was in fact dead in that moment. What follows as he finished Commodus off could be described as just his body instinctually acting on its own or God himself reached in to do the deed himself, but that Maximus was already there, walking through the door to be with his wife.
He was a decent swordsman. Most likely, in spite of his training, he probably never fought a real life or death battle. Going up against someone that had fought countless times and been injured, that experience certainly makes a difference.
He was skilled. He just never fought any real battles and had no experience. If only he wasn't so cowardly and treacherous he could've redeemed himself as a tragic villain
The classic good vs evil scheme but in the ultimate epic form. Superb acting, scripts, larger than life sets and cinematography all made this one of the best movies in history. It would be so cool if this came back to the big screen again with a live orchestra playing the soundtrack.
Part of the beauty of this movie, and others that have similarly great fight scenes, is the amount of blocks. There’s a few older Asian movies that did this very well where there were 200+ blocks and only about 3 landed blows. It creates tension and anticipation by searching for the next landed blow, and gives a sense of actual danger for the protagonist. Being able to mow down enemy after enemy is only entertaining for so long.
Phoenix really doesn't get enough credit for this part. Not just playing the villain but the subtleties of the part just help bring everything together.
For sure one of the best actors of our time. Russel Crowe is great too, but Phoenix just commits so hard to every part he is in and really becomes the character.
sorry to break you dnow but maximus (who killed commondus) in this movie was fictional but commodus still got assassinated and get strangled but by serveal people.
Quintus betrayed Maximus, a man at whose side he fought dozens of battles, and signed on with Commodus. Then when he saw that things weren't going the way Commodus wanted, he switched sides again and betrayed Commodus. Would you want that guy around?
Russell Crowe won the best actor award, and he deserved it. But how come Joaquin Phoenix didn't win the best supporting actor, he played to perfection, how the scoundrel Commodus was.
superbly choreographed. i never really noticed how many styles ridley uses in this fight - there's shakycam, smooth slow mo, jerky slow mo (super 8?), simple tracking shots, all cut together. very unusual.
The “jerky slow mo” is from regular film being slowed down. It’s usually either done when either a production can’t afford proper slow motion or they decide to change a shot to slow motion in the editing room.
You see zoom lenses, production mode cameras on legs, handheld mode, on dolly with track. The jerky slow mo you are talking about isn't actually slow motion at all. Slow motion is when you shoot higher frame rates per second, the disorienting jerkiness you see will be 12 frames per second or so which makes it appear disorientating, you also often alter the shutter angle too, making the movement even more erratic. A large amount film sword action has been shot @22 frames per second to give a rough 10 percent boost in the speed of the action for many years.
On Maximus picking up the sand: I still remember my professor who studied Roman civilization said that it means “to ashes we return, live and fight fully anyway.”
Joaquin Phoenix was totally robbed of the academy award and they were doing that to him for a long time I'm so glad he finally got his but he definitely deserved it for this role
I never noticed that when Maximus is dying, there was a little mound of dirt "built" for him to lay his head on at the end. I read that the camera angle wouldn't capture the scene right if his head were flat on the ground. It is amazing what filmmakers do so sneakily that you don't realize it until it is pointed out. It's neat.
Commodus was a coward, that's why he stabbed Maximus in the back, because he knew he was no match for Maximus who was an experienced, battle harden warrior.
@@SphincterOfDoom he knew he couldn’t defeat Maximus in a fair fight, that’s why he stabbed him. Being a capable fighter is different from being an experienced fighter who’s been in many battles.

Yea, he could fight, although because he never fought real battles he didn't have experience. If only he wasn't so cowardly and treacherous, he could have redeemed himself asva tragic villain.

He purchased a 200 cd changer surround system and huge screen tv with wooden frame that probably weighed about 400 pounds and we would play this movie in the living room and hear the crowd roar on the speakers as the gladiators fought and it was the best!

Joaquin Phoenix should have gotten the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Commodus. One of the best villain roles ever.

Hans Zimmer's magnificent score gives me goosebumps every time as the shields rise up into the middle of the arena.
It is insane how good the score is
I hate to be that guy again (second time today) but Zimmer is a fraud who plagiarizes and steals from other composers.

No we cannot
“Success is lousy teacher, it tricks smart people into thinking they cant lose"
its the difference between choreographed swordplay versus fighting for ones life.
It doesn't matter if you die, everyone dies. It's what you accomplish before you go that matters. Brilliant movie.

Joaquin having two amazing performances as a villain is impressive. I'd argue there are times where he even outshines Russell in this one.
I always said Joaquin Phoenix was the star in this movie, not Russel. Joaquin shined in this movie. He is so interesting to watch
It’s one of those movies where the antagonist outshines the protagonist. Russel was good but Joaquim was incredible. I fell in love with his genius for a good second after this film. He is no short of superb.

@@foreverme3078 both are the best of their roles dude... Russell and the good one, and phoenix as the bad guy. Both shines as two Suns
Three things I noticed after more than a decade:
It’s funnier in history of how he was actually killed more than in movies
Commodus was never killed in arenas, but he was assassinated by gladiator I believe while Commodus was taking a bath
Yes he was killed taking a bath
all i can see is Commodus taking a bath in the middle of the arena
Wasn't he strangled by one of the praetorian guard while taking a bath?

The fact that he thought even for a moment that he could take one of the greatest generals of his time is a testament to the arrogance of the emperor.

This has to be one of the best movies I've ever seen
I always liked the idea that as he dropped his sword, Maximus was in fact dead in that moment. What follows as he finished Commodus off could be described as just his body instinctually acting on its own or God himself reached in to do the deed himself, but that Maximus was already there, walking through the door to be with his wife.
Credit where credits due, Commodus wasn’t totally devoid of skill.
I would say so. He poisoned maximus. It's like having a sparring Match with a sleepy or drunk partner.
He was skilled in the arts of cheating, without stabbing and poisoning Maximus, he'd be dead in 5 seconds.
He was a decent swordsman. Most likely, in spite of his training, he probably never fought a real life or death battle. Going up against someone that had fought countless times and been injured, that experience certainly makes a difference.
He was actually supposed to be very skilled with a sword, taught by the best... but the heart of a cowardly weasel and psychically not the strongest.

There’s a few older Asian movies that did this very well where there were 200+ blocks and only about 3 landed blows. superbly choreographed. i never really noticed how many styles ridley uses in this fight - there's shakycam, smooth slow mo, jerky slow mo (super 8?), simple tracking shots, all cut together. very unusual.
