Yes, I love that little aside. To think that Marcus even considered him his one true SON. Maximus was a special person. It shows how much honor and integrity he possessed.
I like how the other gladiators pay respects as he is walking out. He is literally saving a number of their lives himself by killing all the arena "enemy" gladiators so they don't have to. Dude would get mad respect for that.

It's the little details. Like the way the gladiators are hesitant to attack first when Maximus enters the arena. Like his reputation by this point has got them scared and they know they could die....and do!
He would probably be far more skilled than the randoms he would be fighting against. I could believe a skilled swordsman could defeat poorly skilled opponents.
It wasn't freedom he sought, but an audience with the emperor to exact his revenge. The look of guilt on Maximus knowing the men will die in his path for revenge is unnerving, absolute masterpiece of a movie.

I went to this town in morroco a few years back...the little stadium wasnt rhere bur you knew where you were. I sceeamed are you not entertained at the top of my lungs!
Actually, in a contest like that, it was considered bad form to attack from behind. In truth, at that point, in the late second century, in gladiatorial contests gladiators were rarely killed in the arena, as they had become very expensive commodities and were very popular with the public, much like professional athletes of today. They actually had referees at this point to insure the enforcement of rules and the safety of the combatants
He’s in that mindset of absolutely nothing to lose at this moment , his whole family has been killed and he’s a slave , only later on does he start to have things to care about like his fellow gladiators. He doesn’t care if he dies here , he’s just going 100% In with no fear.
Amazing to see them act so well together on screen but sad to know that in reality, Crowe hated Reed so much because of his non stop drinking and bad behaviour on set...
I don’t think Crowe hated him at all but was annoyed by his unprofessionalism, then Reed died towards the end of the filming due to his ill health and alcoholism.

I’ve always felt that there is something missing in the movie. Because the fight before this he was just one among many and now they now his name and have a fan base?
Possibly ruin, unfortunately likely. I can’t see a logical reason to refer to a movie 20+ years after the fact as a sequel and I will never view it as such. A proper sequel might have involved Maximus in the next life seeking out his family. If Crowe is in it he’s gonna be Proximo and we just get a shitty reshoot of the original. There is no sequel that wasn’t shot 20 years ago. It’s just a cash grab.

I love how the gladiator laughs at the slave master when he talks about knowing Marcus Aurelius, knowing how well he knew him personally.
he didn't say he knew him. he said he touched him on the shoulder once.
