Hello Jennifer [ Jennifer Takes ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This music video is from their 6th studio album "Dark Passion Play" (2007), thentogether with Anette Olzon, the 2nd female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals) - you just heard her. She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Hey Jennifer. I know that Martine a huge fan is of the current singer of Nightwish Floor Jansen. This is the singer before Floor, named Anette Olzon. Of course also a good singer but for most of the fans is Floor THE singer, a level higher. So please another Nightwish song with Floor Jansen as singer. Floor is for many vocalcoaches the most versatile female singer in the world. Listen to Nightwish with Floor Jansen and you will agree with us. Hello Jennifer and thank you for your honest reaction. Nightwish have had three female lead singers and I love them all. This was their second one, Anette Olzon. For something by Nightwish that may be a little more to your taste, you could maybe try Romanticide, Song Of Myself or Ghost River from their legendary Wacken 2013 show with their third and current singer Floor Jansen. Also, Yours Is An Empty Hope (Wembley 2015), Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean (Buenos Aires 2018) or Weak Fantasy (Tampere 2015). I hope you will give them another chance.

If you want to hear something that sounds different to what you've heard before, you were unlucky with your choice (not that the song is bad, it's just closer to the more commercial types of sound that prevail in this genre). It'd be a shame if you missed out on the unique sound and compositional strength of this band - I suspect Song of Myself (live at Wacken 2013) might be the best candidate to hint at the capability of Nightwish and draw you into new musical vistas.

I suspect that Martine would not have asked for this one. It's the nearest Nightwish got to pop with this their second singer, Anette Olzon. This was written about the first lead singer who was sacked so there is a certain amount of angst involved.The usual performance suggested is Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013 featuring the latest and most versatile singer. A completely different level of performance. And the male singer is the bass guitarist Marko who was not a founder member. Sorry but you really got it wrong big time. Did she really request this or are you a reactor who doesn't do live ?

Welcome to the world of Nightwish and symphonic metal. This song is not the best introduction to them, this song is kind of an angry response to the problems with their previous singer. They really are an unique band, with beautiful songs that reach your heart and soul, this is not one of them. Hope you continue to explore their catalog. Greetings from Portugal

I guess the lyrics dictate how you sing and how you look while singing, like playing a role. This was an angry song after firing the original female lead vocalist. A message to her and her manager/ husband.
Check out NIGHTWISH - THE ISLANDER Tampere 2015, or

and you'll see no angry face(s), just the opposite. He is actually a sweet guy. These songs are not heavy/angry.

"So that's the lead gitarist right there." Erm... No, he is not. That is the bass player Marko Hietala, and he is not a founding member. Not sure where you got your information from, but there are some big obvious holes in it. Next time perhaps ask the Nightwish Army for up-to-date information? And IMHO, "Bye bye beautiful" is about the only 'pop song' that Nightwish has done. You should focus on their live concerts to get a more honest feel of this awesome band. "Why do heavy metal bands always look psychotic?" First of all, you don't know the background of this song. Secondly, you are likely to watch depressed music bands who are on stage like it's another day at the office. Read the lyrics of other NW songs and the overall majority is uplifting. And third, watch Nightwish's concerts and count the times you see a psychotic face. The only thing you will find are smiles on everybody's faces.

Thank you for reacting to this ‘special ‘ song and to an ‘Annette’ track. ‘Special’ as being Tuomas’ farewell to Tarja having sacked the band’s first singer as being too much of a diva. Now do yourself a favour. Read up the back story of Tarja’s sacking and watch this again paying full attention to the lyric. See also the explanations of possibly why Tuomas had pretty girls playing the parts of the other band members backing Annette.

This was the first song they released with Antte as lead singer. A mean spirited attack on Tarja. Still trying to blame her because thanks to her (now) husband (20 years) barriers were finally put in place to stop them from ignoring her needs for rest to protect her voice.
Also a terrible event in Mexico where a man jumped up on stage and got his hands under her shirt the band did nothing. It was the new crew member Marcello who got the security guards and got the man away, and Tarja safely back stage.
It was he who was told to look after her. She did actually finish the show.
Now something else. Tarja and Nightwish invited After Forever and a young Floor Jansen to open for them in 2002.
Tarja and Floor remain friends to this day and it was Tarja who gave her blessings to Floor to accept the invitation to join the band in 2010 to take over from Anette who was taking maternity leave from the 2nd half of the tour. Wether she was going to come back is debated. She too may have been fired.
What I know is she never did.
I have heard that a ground rule by Floor accepting the invitation was that she would never sing this song. Her friendship with Tarja much too important.
The 2 ladies Floor and Tarja have worked together at least twice since then.
Now as for Tarja she was far to classy to spill dirty laundry about what went on.
Marcello has made public statements though.

As to what really happened we don't know. I just know relations are civil if not warm. Except for Marko. They made up years ago during a Finnish national xmas concert. They even dueted one of her own Ave Maria's together.
He was her guest on stage years back and will be again on June 08. In Switzerland.

You really started with the weakest singer of the band. You should try something from the End of an Era Concert with Tarja, their first (original) singer. Sound very, very different.
