@@dorothymadara5589 I think losing Tuomas Holopainen would be more detrimental, considering he writes all their stuff, they managed to replace lead vocalists before I'm sure they could replace the bassist/secondary vocalist, but replacing the guy that writes 99% of the lyrics/music? They'd probably split up.
@@danielprudhoe647 Yes and no. Writers can be replaced as well and Tuomos has already shown that he's not a team player.
Yes a bassist has been replaced but that was early in the band history and Marco provided so much more to the board and was carrying the band as far as vocals were concerned when they replaced Tarja with Annette.

it is almost crime you havent listened to old Nightwish classics yet. like: I wish i had an Angel, Planet hell, Nemo, Kinslayer, Over the Hills and Far Away, etc.

I think Storytime might be a better option. Nightwish have always had heavier songs like this but Storytime still has the atmospheric style that you might be used to. Same singer as well. Fact is Anette is a much different singer from Tarja and Floor and they played to her strengths.
Anything off of the album 'Imaginaerum' would be great to show off Anettes vocals, Storytime was the first song I ever heard of theirs and it's amazing. Personally of the 3 singers Anette is my favorite

This. I would have rathered him try storytime from anette first... i dont want to overstep my say here but i do think that anette is widely considered the least talented of the 3, but thats like saying you got bronze at the olympics, still an amazing feat.
Right, not every Nightwish song is a huge orchestral production, though most have some of that aspect. Like "The Islander" or "Slow Love Slow" are also totally different vibe and I love those songs too. Alex definitely needs to do "Greatest Show on Earth" though. And it's not even based on the original vocalist for each song, some songs are just more epic than others:

Storytime was Written for the Movie Imaginaerum. Ans was Written for Anette's voice. This song was Also Written for Anette. it was one of the first Studio songs she had with nightwish.

some of the most popular songs that NW performs with Floor were originally sung by Annette. "Amaranth", "7 Days To The Wolves" "The Poet and The Pendulum", "Storytime", "I Want My Tears Back", and "Last Ride of the Day". the two albums they did with her, "Dark Passion Play" and "Imaginaerum" were their best selling albums before Floor took over. an old saying a new reactor has reminded us of, "Never be the one who replaces the Legend. Be the one who replaces the one who Replaced the Legend." Annette definitely represented a new different direction for NW. a much more contemporary sound. Floor has recaptured the aura of OG Nightwish. with just enough of a contemporary vibe.
Haha, whenever I'm asked who's my favourite singer of Nightwish, I always answer it's Marco, because that guy is just always killing it, and I feel like his contribution is even more integral to the sound of Nightwish than the lead singer's, I just can't imagine the band without him.

This song is one of the songs that Tuomas wrote after Tarja was fired. He depressed and angry after she left because he took all the blame for her being fired. In this song he is trying to get her to see what he did for her. Mainly the songs he wrote specifically for her voice. And in doing that she became a star. Also in the songs he wrote were written to her. He was upset that she did not realize what her friendship meant to him. Tuomas says this song will never be played live. There are a couple of beautiful ballads that Anette sang that maybe your bride to be would like. One is "Meadows of Heaven" and "Eva". Do the studio versions. They are beautiful. One thing you have to remember is that you will never know what to expect. Just sit back and go for the ride. I promise you will enjoy the journey........... :-)

Marco really developed as a vocalist next to Anette, and later with Floor. When Tarja left, it left a space for him to fill, and he rose to the challenge, man. By going through all this drama, Nightwish has somehow come out stronger than ever. You should check out "the islander' -- it's basically a really mellow solo piece for Marco's Voice.

I'd agree with Amaranth for Anette, but I'd probably put Tarja on End of All Hope. I think they both fit better than Floor on those individual songs, but have preferred Floor for every other song she's done. What's amazing is that I have to compare Floor's live performances to Anette's studio recordings.
As for songs that were written with Floor in mind, I'd go with Yours Is An Empty Hope.
My favorite with Tarja is Ever Dream, though I might be biased because that was the first Nightwish song I had heard. With Anette it's The Escapist. And with Floor, it's a toss-up between Elan and Alpenglow.

Marco has always been Nightwish's secret weapon as he brings the bite into the song, well respected and one hell of a bassist too. As for this it is a bit unfair as the song was designed for Anette and to introduce her into the band and was a pretty nasty song - marco's chorus is basically a message from the band to tarja
The best way to compare the 3 is to do songs which all 3 performed live, Ghost love score, nemo, dark chest of wonders etc then the picture become clearer.
Tuomas has many emotional issues to work out..in many songs he either blames himself, Tarja or Marcelo
Absolutely right dude. With Annette in the band it was completely different... Something has been lost when Tarja was fired.. luckily Floor became main and permanent singer of Nightwish and she brought back all that essence that this band needs. Also, Floor is very versatile and skilled singer. She can use her voice as she wants. She really knows how to use her voice to colour NW songs

Annette is completely underrated, and hated for no reason. her voice worked great for the two albums she was with Nightwish Imaginareum being my favorite. she may not have been great live with the older songs, but she did as best as she could. btw her ballads are leaps and bound better than Tarja and Floor imo of course. Also everyone knows Marco is the superior singer
I loved her voice for those albums. She struggled with some of the older stuff live, though.
As for the ballads, I agree completely. 'Eva' is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Annette not being so good at singing older songs was a deliberate choice. That's because the band DID NOT want to perform them as those songs reminded them of Tarja and it just hurt too much. The band was on the verge of breaking up anyway so digging too deep could've been too much.
Tuomas by choosing Annette and therefore writing far different songs for her than in the past actually saved the band at the time.
Therefore compating Annette to Floor or Tarja is just stupid. She was never intended to be comparable. If she was, the band would break up back then.

Remember when talking about the whoel symphonic vibe achieved with floor, that the Poet and the Pendulum (which is IMHO one of Nightwish's difinitive songs) was originally sung by Annette. And if you listen to the studio version of that song, it really does sound almost identical to floor's live performance - in fact Floor's live version sounded more like the studio version then Anette's live performance did, ironically!
I do agree all three singers kind of brought with them three different general "vibes" or feelings with the music - but at the same time if I were to think up some of the Nightwish performances that impressed me the most (including both live and studio performances) I'd be including songs from all three singers. So I guess one way or the other, they all were responsible helping establish the greatness that is Nightwish :)

If you feel impressed by Marco in these songs, you should see his performances in "While your lips are still red" (th-cam.com/video/5V7PKv493Ic/w-d-xo.html) and "The Islander" (th-cam.com/video/Zo8ncK_5kzc/w-d-xo.html). He is seriously impressive enough to lead the vocals on his own (and actually used to be a lead vocalist before he joined Nightwish).

I’m so happy you finally reacted to a Nightwish song that had Anette in it ❤️ I understand your feelings about it, she was such a big change from Tarja! But I think it was a change the band needed. I would highly recommend checking out the album Imaginaerum, especially the song Storytime. Unlike Dark Passion Play, the songs in Imaginaerum were written with Annette’s voice in mind, so I feel her work there is stronger.

Also one of my favourite male vocalists of all time-- definitely check out "The Islander" from the same album as this for some of his clean vocals!! (He also has his own band, Tarot.)
Also, both songs you've listened to featuring Floor are actually _older_ songs from before she joined the band. "Ghost Love Score" was originally from Tarja's era, and "The Poet and the Pendulum" is from the same album as this, originally sung by Annete.
The singer order is Tarja (1996-2005,) Anette (2007-2012,) and then Floor, who is still the band's lead singer. Hope I helped clear some things up!

This song is really special to me; back then i had only hear one song from floor ( storytime, live), and didnt know much of nightwish. Then one day i was chilling at university, and that song came up. I was like "that sounds like nightwish" then i shazam it, and get this song. Then their radio plays sabaton.

I was lucky enough to get the chance to grow up with Nightwish. To experience the hype of every lead singer. For me, the gothic metal style of Nightwish made me fall in love with the band and their music (opening the door to other bands: Magica, Epica and Sonata Arctica"), however... Imaginaerum took it to another level... the story in that album, the vibe and the sound, was/is and will be the greatest album by Nightwish from my personal point of view. Cheers.

I posted this song like 100 times on your vids. Glad you finally listened to those of us who were.
speaking as a long-term Nightwish fan from waayyy back before Tarja left, you've hit the nail on the head. both Tarja and Anette brought their a-game to the stage with the band and with it their own energies and flair, but overall Floor is the one that really encapsulates what Nightwish IS and has always been.
Tarja was the OG and was what put Nightwish on the map, and the two albums released with Anette as the singer are some of the best the band has produced (check out The Islander if you want more Marco!), and both singers deserve the respect i feel like a huge chunk of the 'stan' sections of the fandom fail to give them. Tuomas said outright in an interview, when asked whether the band had considered re-recording their older songs with Floor for the Decades album, that the older songs should be respected as they are, with their original singers, because they represented the different eras and different stages of the band's development (in more or less words, i forgot what he said exactly).
Floor is, in my opinion, the best thing that has happened to the band since the original era. She brings together the best aspects of what both Tarja and Anette brought to the band separately and truly has brought the band, and Tuomas's vision for it, to another level.
also i'm sure you've heard this recommendation WAY too many times already, but The Greatest Show On Earth is your next step. most people recommend the Tampere performance, i'm partial to the Wembley one because of a special guest they bring on stage. both are good--just prepare yourself for more Floor-patented chills!
Annette has other songs that fit your image of Nightwish better, like Poet and the Pendulum and 7 Days to the Wolf.
Maybe you can react to a live clip of Within Temptation next, like Mother Earth or The Cross.

I admit that I discovered Nightwish from Annette's work on Amaranth, Storytime/Imaginerium and this track. That said, I fell in love with Nightwish/Floor @ Wacken 2013. My fav Tarja tracks are Phantom of the Opera, Nemo and Planet Hell
Whooo!!! Bye Bye Beautiful is an awesome song! Anette really impressed me in the Imaginaerum album, specifically the songs Storytime and Scaretale. Nightwish in general is such an amazing band!

Tarja was fired after The End of an Era tour after the very last concert and song she performed in. Now the members of Nightwish stated it was because Tarja didn't treat them like they were a band after she got married she changed, Tarja herself stated differently. Tarja stated that she was fired unfairly but chose to make the most out of it by pursuing her own solo career which she still somewhat does. After Tarja was fired Nightwish wanted to change their music image and start producing different music, going from Symphonic Metal to Power Metal, this also happened to coincide with Annette being signed on as the new lead singer. Many fans who loved Tarja believed that she had been fired unfairly and absolutely hated Annette as the new lead singer for Nightwish, fans also thought it was Annette that brought change to the band's music when the CD Dark Passion Play was released.
I believe Annette was Nightwish's singer for 3 years before she was removed and replaced with Floor. This was only because while on tour right before a show Annette was taken to the hospital for some reason that had to do with her throat. Floor only had I believe 1 day to learn and memorize all of Nightwish's songs for the concert the next day since then Floor was signed on as the new singer when Nightwish learned that Annette would not make a full recovery before the end of the tour and the band wanted to return to it's roots as a symphonic metal band.
I've no idea if this was because sales of both their power metal CD and ticket sales for concerts were down but their foreray into power metal was very short lived.
This song was a back and forth between nightwish and Tarja after she left. They asked her to leave due to a few issues she was creating within the band. She proceeded to release a solo album with a single "I walk alone" this was their response to that. It wasn't a good time in nightwishs journey due to the animosity between the two but as you can see with where they are now Thomas has done an incredible job with all the band and with Floor

In my opinion Marko is the most complete singer ever. The man is marvelous. He's like a god for me. I.d like to see them live before i die.:))
I think this was their best album. The operatic singers definitely have greater range and were more consistent live, but I always found that Annette's voice suited the music better in studio. Also, this album had the widest range of styles from one song to the next. The majority of their other albums are just operatic metal from start to finish, but this album is orchestral at times, pop metal at times, folk rock at times, celtic metal at times, etc.. and yet if you listen to the album the whole way through, they make each style smoothly transition into the next, and they all sound really good.

anette olzen is more of a pop singer while tarja and floor are trained for operatic singing though floor can do some damn good harsh vocals as well when she is given the opportunity

The guy singing is Marko Hietala. He has his own band where he does lead vocals called TAROT.
Also, I like Anette's voice, but she's definitely more pop than rock. She would do well in a band combining pop and rock, kind of like what Cradle of Filth did with Liv Kristine (former lead singer of Leaves' Eyes) in their song Nymphetamine Fix.
ALMOST gave you a thumb up. But you lost it with "Anette is pop". No she isn't. Almost all she has done is rock.

You don't really hear a voice like hers in rock unless it's got some pop mixed in, like Hayley Williams and Paramore, or Lzzy Hale's collab with Lindsey Sterling for Shatter Me.
Amy Grant is the only real exception I can think of. Most female rock singers who use melody over a hard-edged voice have a more Operatic tone, like Tarja did.

@@Aurinkohirvi Rock voices usually have a harder edge to them. A lot of them, like Corey Taylor or Chester Bennington, add melody to it, but the more raw vocals are a bigger focus.
With a pop voice, the focus is purely on melody, and a smoother voice, rather than one with a growl or general gruffness.
There are exceptions, of course. And rock singers used to do ballads a lot where they'd show off their melodious singing compared to their usually more gruff vocals.
Guano Apes are a good example of a female vocalist with some raw vocals. Especially 'High' and 'Open Your Eyes'.

Tuomas (keyboardist) wrote that song after they broke up with Tarja. He kinda regrets it, since the band hasn't played it live since. The old adage "artists must suffer" kinda holds up during the Annette era (two albums; Dark Passion Play and Imaginareum) because a lot of Tuomas' best compositions come from that time, even if he spiraled into a pretty deep depression.
As others have mentioned, the dude killing it this song is Marco. Bassist and secondary vocalist throughout Nightwish's career. The two aforementioned albums hold quite a few songs which feature him pretty well, with one having him as primary (The Islander. Not metal, but a rather good folk/ballad). Unfortuanately, his voice has taken a hit in recent times, since he suffered some complications during some throat surgery (having a cyst removed, I think).

This song is far from their proper representation with Anette. Try some songs from Imaginaerum for that. She's not of the Tarjas or Floors of the world, but she's great.

With Tarja, i usually have the problem i can just hear her for 2-3 Songs... I could listen through a full Album with Anette..
But Floor just makes me floorgasm each time ^^
Tuomas FTW. His versatility in composing for Classical, Pop, and Rock vocalists is what creates the continuity that enables singer debate.

I'm one of those unpopular Nightwish fans who a) love all three female vocalists, for they all have their own "era" so to speak (and I've been lucky enough to have witnessed all three versions live in a concert and met the whole band once w/ Floor) and b) ... I mean, the whole "best singer in the band" agrument? It's Marco. Boom. EDIT: Oh and speaking of Marco... REACT TO TAROT!!!! Either Wings Of Darkness or I Walk Forever. His voice should be in the Unesco World Heritage list. EDIT2: And while Tarja's era holds a special place in my heart, I feel like Anette was crushed under the rudeness and pressure of fans when she became the new vocalist. Tarja's boots were pretty big to fill, and she took the HUGE step to come in the band and I do like her voice on Imagenarium album. But in the end, did I like her how she acted on the later tours and the way she left the band? No, but as we all can see, it was for the best. I've never, NEVER seen the band (and most importantly, Tuomas) as happy as they are now with Floor. Anette couldn't sing Tarja era songs, Floor can sing material from Tarja's AND Anette's era. They are absolutely BEAMING nowdays, and when I saw them live with Floor, I cried during the whole show, not only because it was mindblowing, but how brightly Tuomas was smiling. His band was whole again.

That guy is Marco and he is a beast. He actually did the lead in a couple of songs. “While your lips are still red” and one of my all time favorite song “The Islander” are lead by him. I suggest you give them a listen.
