Look at the ULTA subreddit. They literally ask what they should buy since they have this ‘special coupon’. If you have no idea what to buy, don’t buy anything!
OMG I hate that. People will post giving zero specific information about their skin type or tone, color preferences, favorite brands, etc. They just want to buy to buy.
i work at ulta and the overconsumption i see every day is crazy. ppl will shop just bc they have a coupon or points and some ppl i see multiple times a month or even a week. it's crazy to me. even with an employee discount i'm not buying that much
I have no desire to shop at ulta anymore after I got gifted two gift cards for my birthday and I tried to shop online and they wouldn’t let me use more than one gift card on a purchase. Like what
Although tbh I have no desire to shop at any make up store anymore, Sephora, lush, anything. Because I can find the same stuff at the drug store with cheaper packaging but it’s literally the same sort of products. Ppl are paying for labels more than anything . Even then drug store stuff is getting way too comfy with their prices lol so we’ll see
Child influencers should be banned. Not only is it, imo, unethical, it's also bound to attract the types of people whose interest in a 7 year-old girl has nothing to do with her make-up haul.
Agreed. My 8 year old wants to become a youtuber. I am vehemently against it. They have no idea the impact it could have on their lives, mostly negatively. Cyber bullying etc. They are too young to understand the consequences a video on the internet could have on things down the road. It’s our job as parents to protect them until they are capable of understanding the consequences.
@@miyashadowfox8711 Congratulations for being a responsible parent who's looking out for their child's safety, it's just a shame that there are parents out there doing the opposite. That's why there needs to be some sort of regulation, because the social media platforms don't care as long as they're making a profit.
a child under 16, hell, even 18 should not have a social media account where the main focus is his/her appearance period. so disgusting how parents just let their kids post selfies or whatever on the internet, not saying its the kids' fault but arent they scared about the creeps online? even the most innocuous and innocent pictures and videos somehow find their way being shared in p 3 d 0 groupchats
I hate the "I'm broke now!!" type of lines, it honestly feels like the influencer is cosplaying poor, when in reality, all that stuff they bought can be a tax writeoff or they are making money with affiliate links. YOU the viewer might be broke doing the same haul, but they sure won't be
OK I need to nit pick. The product(s) being a tax write off doesn't necessarily mean that the individual can't be broke *in the moment*. You can still overspend even if it's a legitimate work expense. Being self-employed, I can say that when I drop money on office products, I'm still paying for that out of my own pocket. It just means that when it comes time for me to pay taxes, that 50, 100 quid I spent gets included as part of my not taxed income. In other words, if I made 35k and my non-taxed income is 12k, if I spend 1k on expenses, I now have 13k of non-taxed income.
@@nicoler5713 I think the difference comes in that an influencer has that option to claim all the items they buy for making videos as a tax write-off, but the viewer with no platform doesn't have that option and that same $1000 is just spent money, versus something they can claim later on and kindof be put to work in making the influencer less-broke. And no shade to people who are self-employed, I have friends who are youtubers and have to deal with the hell that is the self-employment tax system, so I have sympathy for you!
There's a youtuber who makes videos constantly buying makeup "I can't find a job, I can't pay my bills". Never do they once stop to think that youtube isn't paying enough to rely on as a full time job.
I feel like she buys products to show in a video and get people to use her affiliate links but doesn't actually use everything and goes and returns a lot of not all of it bc she didn't swatch or test anything
@@nomanejane5766hi! I used to work at Sephora. If the product wasn’t used, it can be returned and it would be put back on the shelves. Anything else that is returned if they are slightly used and not severely damaged, they get donated :)
Agree. I can see playing with mommy’s makeup/dress up, but there’s a huge difference between playtime and a morning makeup routine. And at seven you bet my kid would be taking it off after playtime before we left the house.
This week I overheard a girl who was probably about 7 years old explaining to her grandma what face primer is and that she needs it or her makeup won't stay.😢
My 8 year old went with me in to Sephora the other day and saw another little girl probably 6 and wearing lipstick and she was incensed. “Why is that little girl wearing real lipstick?! Why would her mom let her?!” It was interesting to hear her unsolicited opinion. The mom was standing there letting the little girls swatch eyeshadow and more. Not to mention the other 10-12 year old kids I saw putting stuff all over their faces. I don’t get it.
I agree but whenever I mention this, they turn it around on me and say Im the gross one for thinking of it that way. Its not gross to be aware that stuff like that exists and to be aware.
Some ,of the parents def know... like one mom getting way more views on stuff with the little girl and the swimsuit pics....also more sus stuff with kids putting stuff in their mouths
@@heatherva it’s the realistic thing. Exposing your children online at such a young age is already bordering child endangerment by harboring unwanted attention towards them. Now bring in creeps, people with not very not intentions, and internet stalkers. I wouldn’t recommend making big vidoes on your kids until they’re a teenager ( I’m not talking about Snapchat videos or reels where you record something funny your kid did or giving them presents, I’m talking about full on accounts and videos targeted towards them without any censorship and guidelines ).
@heatherva it's because they know what they're doing and are on the defensive trying to deflect from your argument. I would say any parent is painfully aware of wanting to protect their children from those types of people. Maybe it's not all of us, but I'm probably the extreme to the opposite degree when it keeping my kids offline.
They’re literally training the kid to value material things And they’re definitely adopting the influencer slang Feels very performative And they could definitely be using more age appropriate stuff like Claire’s and lipsmackers
I agree with the sentiment, but definitely don’t get Claire’s. They don’t source their makeup from reputable companies. For kids it’s even more important to make sure the ingredients are safe. Drugstore brands that have been around forever would be a better bet.
I feel like kids should be able to experiment. The issue is parents not checking to make sure the products are safe. There's nothing inherently wrong with a kid playing around.
While I was watching this, I transferred a chunk of cash from checking into my high-yield savings account. Thanks for the reminder to be financially responsible, Shawna!
It makes me so sad hearing her try to imitate influencers when her voice is so obviously young :(. If kids want to play with makeup, there's child-friendly makeup!! Or they can use play makeup. I hate this mother.
Same, I only started washing my face at 11 because I started getting acne and honestly if I had clear skin I don’t even know if I would’ve gotten sucked into makeup youtube in 2012…
@@RenaissanceRockerBoy play makeup isn't subject to the same testing as actual makeup (because it's considered a toy rather than cosmetics) so is actually less safe for children to use. It's better to get kids cheap colourful 'normal' makeup to play with.
I saw a kid buying skincare earlier, I was about to say something to the parent if I saw her with an acid product. The parent might not know it can cause problems for adults let alone a primary school kid
They should just call these "Future Landfill Hauls." Or "Declutter Sneak Peeks." Also anyone else done with them intentionally wearing huge sleeves bunched around the first digit or two of their fingers? "I'm so small and doll-like." Ugh.
ive seen this sleeve thing in cooking videos too😂 like pull up your damn sleeves girl, youre gonna get meat juice on them! also i keep seeing a cycle of haul videos then declutter videos a few months later where they just get rid of expired stuff, then another haul vid where they buy acrylic (temu/shein) organisers to organise the piles of makeup/skincare they got during the hauls, its super annoying
@@problemperson4221 People really don’t care about the hygiene of themselves or the food they’re eating. Like I never see them wash their hands or PULL THEIR SLEEVES UP? I like baggy stuff aswell, but you will never see me in the kitchen doing hands on activities with my sleeves down💀
I only buy from Sephora 2 times a year at most, my birthday is in June so I get myself a birthday present (something that's been on my list for a while that I'll actually use) and then in December when I buy things like moisturizer. I used to try to do Sephora hauls because of FOMO but then I realized that I usually hated the products that I rushed into buying and I didn't need to be spending $200 every few months. Luckily I've never gone into debt, but still a scary thought how influenced I was.
I spent an insane amount of money during the spring sale, and I completely regret it. I didn’t need these things, and I got swept up in the excitement and dopamine! Something recently dawned on me: just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Why do I, as a regular person, think I need high-end products?
I went to Sephora yesterday to browse 3 products I was interested in. I left with one product and a special freebie item. Edit, I think it’s ok to purchase high end products if they have clean ingredients and you can afford it. I don’t like the fact that we have to choose healthy products or products that can cause cancer. That should not be a concern regardless if we can afford it or not.
@notesdecoeur It's okay. I will keep it since I don't want it to go in the trash. I'm glad I recognized it and found this channel. I'm becoming a more conscious consumer. 😊
@@Ryanneey the way, I see it is either it’s going to go stale in my storage and I lose the money or I can return it and it goes bad in the trash and I get to keep my money
seeing a seven year old do a makeup haul is genuinely horrifying. why does she have an influencer persona shes still learning her times tables!!!! Edit: oh my god $142 for FOUR PRODUCTS????? we have genuinely lost the plot here
We don't know what happens when the camera gets shut off. They may just buy it for views and then return it. It makes me sad that parents let kids have TikTok accounts. There are so many predators out there, not to mention 6-year-olds do not need beauty products.
The problem with that is when you return makeup it doesn’t go back on the shelf even if it’s unopened. It gets trashed due to health and safety hazards. So it’s creating waste.
Sephora is the grown up toy store/candy store It’s kind of. Sad that a lot of us see buying a bunch of things as success. Can we have a “putting money in my kids college fund challenge” or a “putting away money into retirement challenge” Plus is it just me or ppl feel “too grown” for drugstore lol 😂 People will spend 3x to get a high end product for it to perform just like the drugstore product
I have a very minimal amount of makeup. Probably what was typical in the 80’s-90’s. I’m finding my way back to the drugstore for particular categories because for so long they didn’t make foundation light enough for me. Then you just kind of repeat buy what works. Drugstores have really stepped it up in the last 20 years though.
I agree! Imo some people see it as aspirational is because Sephora and the like are accessible and attainable. It's easier to save up/buy an expensive perfume or lipstick than a house or car.
@@sungexpression9093 I don’t agree actually. For years I just thought I was bad at makeup because after a few hours it looked nothing like how I started. Then I dropped a good bit at Sephora for base products like primer, foundation, concealer and I really saw the difference. I still shop cheaper end for eye and lip products because I am able get the look I’m wanting. I’ve personally found what I like to splurge on and what I don’t.
I cringe thinking of how much I used to spend on makeup after discovering beauty TH-cam back in the day. My makeup now consists of one makeup bag of stuff (used to have an ikea drawer unit full) and now anytime I look at makeup items I really try to think hard if I actually need it. And now I also find so much satisfaction in seeing myself hit pan and use up products.
It so satisfying hitting pan on products I haven’t bought a blush since 2016 and I use the one I do have as both eyeshadow and blush im so excited for the day I finish it
@@lovers807it really is!! I wish I would’ve had this thought process when I was deep in makeup buying but now I love hitting pan and seeing myself use products up.
love the idea of an influencer purchasing fun products for others, especially if they don't often get the opportunity to do so themselves. i also appreciate that she isn't milking engagement by presenting the items to the people she's giving them to and posting it. love the lack of self awareness for that mom to be like "i don't let my child have social media" yet... is posting the child on the internet for views. this is not a proper "social experiment" and she seems to be using those buzzwords for engagement. this didn't have to be a public thing, but the mom made it one. as for the idea of playing with makeup, that's something that i've had to relearn as an adult. i was always too afraid to get into makeup as a teen, but now whenever i go out i try different makeup looks. playtime for kids can include makeup, and in a similar vein dress-up, because they probably see their mom/aunts/etc use makeup and dress up. i would say that skincare items should not be put in the mix until teenhood and/or the emergence of acne because oftentimes they are formulated specifically for adults and teens. kids should be allowed to experiment, but should not be held to the same standards as adults. lovely vid as always, i look forward to your next vid! 💖
the mom was criticized pretty heavily for that comment and answered a question on tiktok about it. She found a way to justify it to herself. Mainly saying that being on social media and watching it are different?? Totally agree that kids wearing makeup can be a fun thing and I think your comparison with the dress up is pretty accurate.
I have to disagree about the skincare age. My 5 yo likes to do her "skincare" with me, which consists of elf face wash/toner/moisturizer from their "pure skin" line and my derm/her pediatrician both said it's OK for her. She also uses a daily face sunscreen year round. I want to instill good habits early. She loves dress up and makeup, so I let her wear lip gloss/tint and perfume anytime. Sometimes, I let her wear glitter eyeshadow/blush when playing dress up at home. I always stress to her that makeup is for fun, not a need- like u said, it should be fun.
@@funsizedi88 good point! especially regarding regular sunscreen use. you taking the step to confirm with a dermatologist/pediatrician prior to use is a step i doubt many of these child influencers' parents have taken.
@buffoello I agree, most parents would not do that- bur my little one is very hard to convince sometimes. Lol. All joking aside, I asked because I'm very cautious when it comes to her in all aspects. I just want her to be happy and healthy, and part of that is building those habits early. My mother did not do that with me at all, and I vowed to be the opposite. Also, in today's world, even things marketed as "sensitive skin safe" are not. I've learned to read skincare labels for myself, but im 35 w/hormonal acne, so I use a lot of heavy hitting acids/retinal/tret, etc.
How nice of her to do that. My mom’s breast cancer has come back five times and she’s in constant pain. So, I’m sure that these cancer patients truly appreciate these very generous gifts.
I feel like the fundraiser lady did some research, too. Like, she was buying lip balms, some perfumes, a little blush, but she wasn't expecting people to want to do a full face when they're sick. And she threw in her PR so it doesn't get wasted but would do well in a fundraiser becuase it would have fancy PR giftboxes
Your videos have been so helpful recently. I am far more conscious about my purchases. I'm not a minimalist but I take a moment to evaluate if it's something I actually want and or wear. Thank you ! ❤
I was once at an Ulta and saw a child begging her mom to let her buy more than one product from Drunk Elephant because she couldn’t make a TikTok haul with just one thing. I lost all respect for the mom when she caved. “Haul” culture has gotten wildly out of control.
Lol yes. I've been very tempted to buy new eyeshadows and blushes recently and I'm thinking to myself... do I REALLY want to spend the next three years using this. REALLY SHAWNA?! Sorry, your comment made me laugh.
I do live vicariously through other people's hauls, ive been watching this type of content since I was 12, and then in my actual life my friends and I are like stalking where to find products we want and use regularly (like sunscreen) for the cheapest possible and buying together to save on shipping T_T I find anything over 30$ to be hella expensive like-
Any makeup for a ten year old seems like a lot. I’m not saying it’s bad for a kid to be interested, but it seems like it should be more common for kids to have none than any.
i used to basically collect makeup as a high schooler and now as a grad student i still have some palettes/products from then that i havent hit pan on 😭 like i’m about to finish a brow powder that i got in 2016!!! i had a boxycharm subscription for 3 years and the dozens of unused palettes i ended up giving to friends and family is insane but at least i know they ended up being used, i can’t imagine how much waste is produced by people just continuously buying new makeup
This was me in college! I feel so much guilt now and everything I have still after YEARS is like one haul for some of these people. (At least we’re still using it right? 😭)
Not gonna lie. This is why i wear powder foundation and not liquids or concealer. I dont wear it enough to use it up before it goes off. Im using a mac pressed powder i got in 2016 i think. Maybe 2018 at the most recent. And i have eye pallets from 2016 as well. Its dry powder and my brushes are always clean so i dont worry too much.
Boxycharm did me in. I’m just now using up the last of some of the stuff I got (quit 2 - 3 years ago). Super big “hit” every month and more products than one person could ever use. I even got the “extra” haul every three months (to be fair, some great products in those…). Having tons of makeup both stressed me out yet made me feel good all at the same time. 🤷🏻♀️
me too. i love my best friend but we’re only in middle school (7th grade next year) and she insists on using skincare. she does have acne but she got the glow recipe moisturizer. she uses a ton of anti-aging stuff too. i think she does need skincare but literally no 7th grader needs bhas and ahas.
I recently just got blessed by a ton of eyeshadow pallets from a friends ex who had to move out. She had so many Pat McGrath pallets that my mom and I split them, many unopened, and even som duplicates. This is what actually happens when you overspend it is left for the trash before we got to it. I wont have to buy eyeshadow for years.
Things to ask yourself before you spend at Sephora: - Do I like to use skincare, makeup, and or perfumes? Is it something that adds value to my life and makes me happy, or is it something I use to fit in? - Do I like the brand I am buying from? Or am I only buying it because the brand is trendy? - Am I boredom shopping? Emotional shopping? Can I do another activity/meditate or journal about my emotions? - Would I be more proud of myself in the long run if I didn't purchase this/saved my money? - Do I want to give this money to Sephora? Or could this money be spent in another, more useful, way? - (FOR HOURLY WORKERS): How many hours do I have to work to afford this Sephora cart (ex: my wage currently is $12 an hour. I wanted to buy $94 worth of makeup and skincare but that would be 8 hours of work, or a shift and a half).
Hey Shawna just want to draw your attention to something, during the "[child name]'s haul" section, there's a split second where the child's name is outside the censor area and is fully visible (not including timestamp cause I don't want to draw attention to it), I believe TH-cam has a whole-screen blur feature that can be applied to videos that have been already uploaded, you may want to consider using it for that split second where you can see the name!
I used to be super addicted to makeup consumption. I'm so thankful to be out of that part of my life. Shopping addictions are really difficult to get over because...you still need to shop. These videos (the hauls), make me feel really sorry for the individuals. I really hope they're not getting into financial trouble like I did. It's a really hard thing to get over.
I’m a grandma and I would be very displeased if my daughter in law put my grandkids out there like that. Wow. It makes me very uncomfortable. With all of the craziness in the world today why would anyone want their child’s face viewed by millions of people. I just have no words 😢
I wish my mom was like you. We’re constantly asking her to take down photos and videos of our kids because she has a public profile for her various MLMs and you never know who’s looking.
And here I am, feeling excessive if I have more than one lipstick at a time 😅 I buy one expensive lipstick (Besame) and usually have it used up by the same sale the next year... it works great!
I get such an uneasy feeling watching all those products go into the bag and get checked out on the second video. It feels like actions of my former self that struggled to curb my impulses and basically blacked out spending money. I'm still working toward my best self, but it does help me recognize my progress to have such a reaction while watching those. It definitely helps watching your videos! I just hear your voice asking "where are you going to put it?" when I think about buying something lol
I am absolutely not into make-up, but my first thought on that first video would have been "where is the rest of the purchase?" I mean, you spent $700 and did not get more than this? While you could have bought something like a camera, a tablet, a sofa or even all of this for the same amount of money?! My favorite violin cost 800€ and is already 130 years old by now and will hopefully survive me yet!
I went down a bad rabbit hole this last year and now haven't bought anything but refills the last few months, and that still wipes out my bank account... 700$ and saying we "HAVE" to try things is not true at *ALL*
I have never been this early for a video! I love your content . It’s perfect for listening and falling asleep, plus learning more about critical thinking around shopping
Hey! Thanks so much for the videos! They are so relaxing and helps me feel good about my minimal purchases. Sometimes I feel like I don’t “fit in” with all the consumerism… and don’t have cute stuff.
No idea how you could love a scent so much you get the largest size. When i look for perfume the price always trumps how good i think it smells. The current perfume i wear is a travel size perfume because i refuse to buy a perfume for $300.
This video resonates so so much with me. I am extremely guilty of deeply enjoying retail therapy and have a small shopping addiction. And I am totally the person that gets in the mood to want to shop, I want to go spend money, so I’ll go online and search tj max hauls, target hauls, etc and then make a list of things I want to try to find and then go out and do it! And then feel terrible about myself for spending money. I do not have expendable income. I’m really working on it, but man I appreciate you calling me out. I needed that.
God I've been such a victim to sephora. I used to go every single week, spending 100-200$ everytime. I wanted to buy every single products from 2 brands, Laneige and Glow Recipe. The Laneige lip mask basically saved my dermatitis and I won't ever stop buying it but goddamn, i had almost every single products. 2 cleanser from laneige and glow recipe, two toners, two essence, two moisturizer, two eyecream, two of everything from the two brands. I never had any money because i always spent it on sephora and then i would show them off. I was a vib(250$) then a rouge(1000$) so i wanted to buy more and more, always spending money because i wanted the free samples they gave me EVEN THO i literally never used them. I wanted to try one of my sample AND IT WAS EXPIRED because i saved it for so long. I have major depression and I can't even get out of bed to brush my teeth, why did i think buying so much products would motivate me??? I've been doing some thinking about my addiction and i literally only buy things i love/need and ask myself if the product is really good enough for the price. I'm starting to responsibilize myself and its really helping me. In my opinion, some of the only products i like/will buy again is the Laneige lip mask, the glow recipe watermelon toner and the dior lipgloss, that's it. Please don't go in debt, especially in these shitty ass financial time

I always wanted to go to a bookstore and buy everything I wanted. Then I heard about these challenges, where people are given an amount of money and HAVE to spend it in a short time ("Would you buy books for $1000 within two or three hours?") At first I thought, that must be fun, being able to spend more than you ever would and get absolutely every book you liked. Then, for one Christmas, I bought a couple of books, maybe for 100€ and could not wait till they arrived - only to be overwhelmed at now having to read all these books (they were not many, maybe 5). It was just the weight of "you have bought it now use it within a short time" that took lots of the fun away. You could not buy anything in one category such as books, make-up or clothes for a year, save the money and then splurge it in one day - but I guess that would actually overwhelm a lot of people.
I’ve been trying to reduce my consumption a lot recently and was just browsing Sephora and was so tempted to buy things, and this video popped up! Perfect timing and a reminder I don’t need anything ❤been loving your videos
Im so happy i never got into using makeup besides lip products or mascara ! It has helped me not spend tons of money on makeup. I am still very careful though to not get too many lip products as i usually just wear like chapstick or lip balm. When i wear mascara its very rare so i try not to buy more than one. I love your videos ! It helps me try to think about what i buy first. One of the ways i stop myself from buying stuff is making a board on pinterest for the asthetics i like and just look at it when i want but i dont buy anything on the board and i dont add anything to my cart on anything to help me not be tempted
Those cheap paper boxes and bleh packaging. Times were different when you went to an 80s mall beauty counter, plus you got gifts, tons of samples and someone to put on your makeup
Re the first video, it gets me how the say “I dont even know why I bought this”, or “social media X made me buy it”, or “saw Jane Doe using it and had to get one too”.
16:34 I could also interpret that comment to mean how happy she is that she's able to buy all she wants without worrying about the financial implications. (despite how unhinged this behavior is imo lol)
I have recently become a reformed over shopper of skin care and body care and part of what I keep telling myself is that storage aspect you talk about and going through the products. I get overwhelmed when I realize how much I have and had at one point, and I am so grateful I was able to realize that I need to go through stuff to get new stuff and that has helped a lot.
I haven't bought anything for myself in almost a year. We built a house and had to live with my parents from September-January, I found out I was pregnant in February, and was deathly sick until mid May.. I know I will need some new clothes after this baby in the winter so I will get myself some stuff then.. but like.. I haven't gotten myself anything because I didn't have anywhere to put it for months then I was just surviving and now I know it's stupid to get anything at all when I know I need to just wait.. since doing this all I have realized is that I don't care what's new or out there at all. I was on a makeup no buy from November 2022 until November 2023 so that also helped. It just grosses me out now when I see people buying stuff to buy it for fun. Like you don't need that.. you don't even really want it with how you're talking about it and you just randomly walked in a store and picked stuff just to buy something. Hauls are so weird unless it's something you like actually need (like when ya girl gets new undies and some pants this winter 😂)

I was in a big make up store when the epiphany hit.... these pallettes are all the same color scheme. Browns, high pigment color and the smokie colors....I purchased my $25.00 lip gloss and left the pallette. 😂 Hopefully, one day, I will grow away from this type of mind control.
I feel like we are seeing the lipstick effect on hyperdrive, like the world is on fire and so are our hopes and dreams so instead of dreaming big and saving for the milestones previous generations did we farm for dopamine hits. It is bleak and dystopian but a $900 Sephora haul is more attainable than a house. Our depression has been hijacked by corporate greed and distorted into something aspirational.
I'm Gen-X, so I got in on the tail end of the "you need to plan for the future" financial mindset, and my husband and I just managed to buy a small old house when small old houses were still affordable for the working and lower middle classes. But, I have so many younger friends and family members who have decided that since home ownership and retirement are no longer attainable goals for them, they might as well spend every penny they have (and then some via credit cards and payment plans) on things that make them feel good in the here and now. And I can't really judge them harshly for it. When you can't envision a future, you can't plan for a future. It really is depressing and dystopian.
The "social experiment" for the second child seems to be in training her to run into a shop and grab as much stuff as she can in a short time period. And then encouraging her to get more because she caused "disappointment " in her mother by not getting enough. 😢
TikTok makes me sick. No wonder our kids will grow up broke. PSA Sephora and Ulta let you try the product in store…you don’t need to binge shop to try it. Young adults today need to wake up. You are pissing away your future.

I am loving this series of overconsumption. It’s has helped me think about the way I buy things. I have also been a small over buyer of goods especially during COVID this is a good point to remind myself not to overspend. 😊😊😅😅
The “product modelling” part of these tik toks makes me irrationally angry-bc we’ve gotten so far from people just recommending things they like and use, and the “selling” is just so transparent that I don’t feel I as the viewer am being considered in any way except as a purchaser. When people do the thing where they drip excessive product on their face or tap their manicure on every single item or basically fondle the product to make it seem appealing, even the over the top reactions when they swatch something. I see the verbiage “I need it” or “I went broke” as an extension of this, and it’s all to make everything seem as appealing and urgent as possible. I get upset because I don’t feel like I’m even being shown things by people anymore. It’s advertising techniques 100% and the haul is just the most blatant version of this that doesnt even try to hide its intention. This feels like the depressing eventuality of where beauty social media evolved after advertising dollars infiltrated those communities so that now influencers do these things on their own whether they get paid or not. It’s now just considered normal
I had an odd duality growing up: females are meant to look like females but ridiculed and looked down upon for buying and using products to appear so. My issue as an adult was that I love hair, makeup, glitter, etc. but felt ashamed when buying. It took a while, but creators like you have helped me ID what makes sense to buy and to truly focus on items that give me joy, within budget.
for 2025 I'mma need influencers to stop using the word RESTOCK. That's for grocery stores and warehouses, you are a person. You shouldn't be keeping inventory. Just say it's finished so I bought a new one
As someone who is now in their 40s, I can say with absolute certainty that in my 20s I was irresponsible with money. The whole "Sephora Haul" thing didn't exist back then, and TH-cam/Influencer culture wasn't a thing. Social media didn't even really exist. But, it's about "Keeping up with the Joneses" thing where you want to feel like you belong, even if you go into debt. I am telling you, do not go into debt to keep up with people. Your financial mistakes will follow you for years and take time to repair. Be happy with what you have and learn to use what you have already before spending uselessly.
really enjoyed this video! i honestly didn't even realise anyone spent this kind of money in makeup stores, i feel guilty when i spend $15 on a new mascara every 3 months 😂
Oh wow the little girls made me feel SO uncomfortable as a mother of kids that age. That’s honestly sick. The line between this kind of adultification and other more sinister forms is so thin.
Honestly it made me rethink some of the things that are considered online safety. At first, to me, it was weird to post your kids so young and let them have their own account without properly monitoring who can see it. For me, staring at it now as a teenager, it made me raise an eyebrow. My mom and dad both agree I shouldn’t be posting myself or anything personal online, and while my dad is more strict on it saying I can’t have certain apps at all, I’m glad I was censored when I was younger and I have parents with a decent head on their shoulders that will ensure any videos or content with me and my siblings in it are posted to trusted people.
I’ve seen the pressure to purchase goods you cannot afford compounded by store sales associates too. I have witnessed Sephora sales associates pushing young girls to open credit cards without understanding terms and conditions to get the sign up discount to purchase products they have said they cannot afford but the associate, “can see they really need.” I know some retailers set credit card quotas for their employees so this may not be entirely the associates’ fault, but I still find this tactic disgusting. Another sales associate was pushing the same Drunk Elephant product on every customer who came through the store. She later admitted to a client it was because she wanted to tell Drunk Elephant how much of their product she had sold so she could get brand sponsorship.
I bought a 22$ lip balm from Sephora once as a gift for myself it was amazing and I loved it so much that I went to find a 5$ dupe I now use all the time! Don't be like me, find the dupe first before buying the 22$ version, save your coins!
Same...I get the dupe first and if I don't like it I'll get the travel size real deal. Then if I love that I wait until it's on sale or I get some sort of discount next time I buy
Just because there’s everything in the store, doesn’t mean you have to buy everything 😭😭 What is even the point of having 10 different blushes!!? No one can tell!!!
Btw that makeup you’ve had for years is expired. The little jar icon on cosmetics gives the shelf life in months once the makeup is open. Most has a shelf life of 6-24 months.
I was influenced to buy my first ever big eyeshadow palette. I sat and thought about it for three days and I do my normal "before I buy" self interrogation and found myself adding some new ones from you! I did buy it in the end and I'm really happy about it. Too hot right now for eyeshadow 😅 but oooooo its beautiful. I cannot wait for it to cool down. Also for the girl who bought the stuff for the cancer patients, not from her but my mom's gotten stuff like this. And it was super sweet, I got the stuff she didn't need/want/couldn't use. She isn't a huge makeup person but everyone in the treatment center was so happy about it.
I absolutely hate seeing children doing Sephora Hauls because of the products not containing ingredients meant for children. I've even thought about Sephora coming out with children's makeup/skincare that has proper ingredients, with using a similar aesthetic that kids seem to be attracted to, make a children's makeup area and call it Sephora Junior or something. However, that idea can come with a lot of pros and cons which probably wouldn't work unless there is a lot of marketing and internet exposure content to hype it.
@@shawnaripari It's definitely not a bad idea, but getting it to appeal to that generation and get the right tik tok/youtube exposure is the difficult part. When I was a kid I got the old school Caboodles makeup case in glittery purple and at christmas I'd get the makeup kits. I didn't start using cover girl concealer, foundation and pressed powder til I was about 13 to cover the puberty pimples.
When I was 10-12 I was a big makeup user, but I knew how to use it and it was a big creative outlet, like painting. But, it was like a few lipsticks, (black, red, and nude) ONE concealer, (sometimes I would steal my mom’s too) a bronzer, a powder, a blush, (I would usually use my lipsticks) a mascara, quite a few eyeliners (too many, but I used them all and wouldn’t rebuy unless I was OUT) i had a few sample size skincare things along with a MOISTURIZER and a CLEANSER both MEANT FOR TEENS. And most of it was from the one or two year long IPSY subscription that I had as a Christmas gift. There were probably also two eyeshadow pallets that I bought from TJs.
I think it’s also that I could go and buy stuff, as I was in a good income family, but I think I realized that I didn’t need all of it. That’s why I canceled my IPSY, because I realized that if I don’t put money into that, I’ll go and buy stuff I KNOW that I want.
that first tiktok girl.. wild. if you think it's too much. just don't buy it. though it's fair for the Perfume if she's intending to put it on everyday. especially if you really like the scent... why spray like that tho. you don't need to put on that much on. two spritz max. other stuff.. just why. you don't need so much stuff. and i thought my art supply purchases were mad.
Look at the ULTA subreddit. They literally ask what they should buy since they have this ‘special coupon’. If you have no idea what to buy, don’t buy anything!
@@halosane4170 yeah at least in the bbw they'll give away coupons they don't want

I don’t know how it’s legal, agree
Agreed! It’s child exploitation. Period.
YOU the viewer might be broke doing the same haul, but they sure won't be
Their usually on the bum and people send them money 💰 they need to get a job
I don’t agree, a lot of these influencers ARE broke.

Returning it is only gonna make it that it gets send to a landfill, the better option was to never buy it in the 1st place ..
Seeing a 7 year old wearing make up is so dystopian to me...
Agree. I can see playing with mommy’s makeup/dress up, but there’s a huge difference between playtime and a morning makeup routine. And at seven you bet my kid would be taking it off after playtime before we left the house.
Yep. I did lots of dance recitals as a little girl and after recitals my parents had me clean my face before going to a restaurant to celebrate. 😭
This week I overheard a girl who was probably about 7 years old explaining to her grandma what face primer is and that she needs it or her makeup won't stay.😢
@@Sweet_DeeThat’s so sad 😭
My 8 year old went with me in to Sephora the other day and saw another little girl probably 6 and wearing lipstick and she was incensed. “Why is that little girl wearing real lipstick?! Why would her mom let her?!” It was interesting to hear her unsolicited opinion. The mom was standing there letting the little girls swatch eyeshadow and more. Not to mention the other 10-12 year old kids I saw putting stuff all over their faces. I don’t get it.
tiktoks exploiting kids make me feel genuinely sick
Really though, it's not tiktok, it's the parents exploiting their kids...
I remember someone saying that child influencers are making material for pedophiles.
And now I can’t unsee it.

@@rodemates the most I might buy from Sephora is 3 or 4 items and 4 items is a lot for me
I spent an insane amount of money during the spring sale, and I completely regret it.

I truly believe many of them return them.
The problem with that is when you return makeup it doesn’t go back on the shelf even if it’s unopened. It gets trashed due to health and safety hazards. So it’s creating waste.
Sephora is the grown up toy store/candy store
It’s kind of. Sad that a lot of us see buying a bunch of things as success.

Plus is it just me or ppl feel “too grown” for drugstore lol 😂
People will spend 3x to get a high end product for it to perform just like the drugstore product
For years I just thought I was bad at makeup because after a few hours it looked nothing like how I started. love the idea of an influencer purchasing fun products for others, especially if they don't often get the opportunity to do so themselves. i also appreciate that she isn't milking engagement by presenting the items to the people she's giving them to and posting it.
love the lack of self awareness for that mom to be like "i don't let my child have social media" yet... is posting the child on the internet for views. this is not a proper "social experiment" and she seems to be using those buzzwords for engagement. this didn't have to be a public thing, but the mom made it one.
as for the idea of playing with makeup, that's something that i've had to relearn as an adult. i was always too afraid to get into makeup as a teen, but now whenever i go out i try different makeup looks.
playtime for kids can include makeup, and in a similar vein dress-up, because they probably see their mom/aunts/etc use makeup and dress up. i would say that skincare items should not be put in the mix until teenhood and/or the emergence of acne because oftentimes they are formulated specifically for adults and teens. kids should be allowed to experiment, but should not be held to the same standards as adults. lovely vid as always, i look forward to your next vid! 💖
the mom was criticized pretty heavily for that comment and answered a question on tiktok about it.

Things to ask yourself before you spend at Sephora:
- Do I like to use skincare, makeup, and or perfumes?
My version would be "Just spent 2,000 dollars on medical bills omg I'm broke now. Like and Subscribe!" :)
Children have no business consuming beauty products like that. Nothing against the child obviously but that's a huge parenting fail. Very sad.
👏 This behavior should be normalized
My favorite violin cost 800€ and is already 130 years old by now and will hopefully survive me yet!
if i had 700 dollars to use i swear i would have enough stuff to justify that price 😭
I hope you enjoy!
Same here
Hey! Thanks so much for the videos! They are so relaxing and helps me feel good about my minimal purchases. Sometimes I feel like I don’t “fit in” with all the consumerism… and don’t have cute stuff.
totally cool to not have the newest or most aesthetic stuff 😃although I understand it doesn't always feel this way
No idea how you could love a scent so much you get the largest size.
Please don't go in debt, especially in these shitty ass financial time
Are you me? All of it...used to be a Rouge, the depression level. I'm glad we're both self-aware and on a journey to better mental health and more financial stability. I wish you nothing but the best! ❤
@@Megan-zi9tf twinsies!!!! I've done a cleaning of my "collection" of products (threw away empty containers, old products i never use) and it feels so much better!
Today i was actually ordering a new laneige lip mask (which i actually need because i have sensitive lips) and i also wanted to buy the laneige moisturizer because i like it more than the one i have right now but i took a step back and asked myself "do i really need it right now? My other moisturizer isn't empty, i dont need to buy more now" and i felt proud of myself for actually thinking about it
I always wanted to go to a bookstore and buy everything I wanted.
Yeah, also another way to see it!
Sometimes I just want to know how much they actually make pay wise as creators because those Sephora hauls are insanely expensive!
It’s possible that they return stuff but I think Sephora has a limit
I have recently become a reformed over shopper of skin care and body care and part of what I keep telling myself is that storage aspect you talk about and going through the products. I get overwhelmed when I realize how much I have and had at one point, and I am so grateful I was able to realize that I need to go through stuff to get new stuff and that has helped a lot.
This video reminded me to pay my credit card bill bc it stressed me out so much haha
Nothing makes me roll my eyes as quickly as the "influencer finger tap".
I'd rather have a healthy 401k
Oh my what a year for you. All tbe best with your new arrival.
I wish you could see the amount of make up and money my little sister has swindled my mom out of 😭😭😭 I was never allowed to have that much make up
Does the second sibling get treated better than the first? I’m an only child so trying to see both sides of it because I’ve always wanted siblings.
@@notesdecoeurThe first child is like a trial run then the second or other younger siblings are treated better. Not the case with all older siblings but this happens. I’m an older sibling.
Your channel spurred my low buy! I haven’t bought any makeup skin or haircare or random shit I don’t need this month!
@@Magicwithizz congratulations on your success 👏 👍 ✨️ 🙌
I was in a big make up store when the epiphany hit.... these pallettes are all the same color scheme. Browns, high pigment color and the smokie colors....I purchased my $25.00 lip gloss and left the pallette. 😂
Hopefully, one day, I will grow away from this type of mind control.
This is the first video I’ve seen of yours, and I instantly subscribed. You have great energy and I really like your channel’s purpose.
those prices are absolutely insane. $100 for foundation? I feel guilty spending 10.
The first woman is canadian so the prices are even more expensive!
I casually dropped a grand this week, but it was to fix my plumbing 😢
Might be my favourite video of yours! Even though I’m not an avid make-up user at all, it’s just so fascinating to hear you talk about it. With your experience in the matter of consuming beauty content you are truly the best person to speak up about it. It’s likely I will want to come back to see it again, thank you for this one and all others, you are a gem 🧡
thank you so much! So glad to hear you enjoyed the video 💕
if you are familiar with kpop in any capacity: kpop hauls
...it has a lot of potential to get you very many pissed off people tho
I'm a kpop stan haha the consumerism in our fandoms is so so bad but I wouldnt trust someone outside of it to criticize it fairly. Like it's hard to explain GOs to people who aren't familiar and efforts to be less wasteful look a bit different compared to minimalist purchasing type low waste lifestyles.
@@murlough3533 hahahha yep yep i agree completely, that's why i said familiar with kpop, cause idek what music Shawna is into. i'd love to hear someone talk about it in a nuanced way though
That poor seventeen album carats bought so the sales would go up and they ended up throwing them away in the streets afterwards
@@memonos i wish it was only Carats, i saw it across all groups, especially the more popular ones (obvs, cause more fans > more waste). i'm mostly active as a Stay, and the amount of trash i saw... i love GOMs who offer album only options for cheaper, but they are so few and far between :')
I am loving this series of overconsumption. It’s has helped me think about the way I buy things. I have also been a small over buyer of goods especially during COVID this is a good point to remind myself not to overspend. 😊😊😅😅
i’ve only recently discovered your channel but i’m glad i did 🖤🖤 your videos are really eye opening!!
Glad to hear you're enjoying my content
Hauls = Binges.
I wonder if these hauls would stop if Sephora stopped accepting returns on "gently" used items.
The ad that played the middle of this was a clorx "bathroom reset" ad selling cleaning products.
The "Mini Sephora Haul" Sure Isn't little
“With every high, there is a low, simply because you’re not high anymore” true!!!
30:38 my mom wouldn’t even give me all her old makeup because I was a CHILD and seeing a child in thick caked concealer is FRIGHTENING
for 2025 I'mma need influencers to stop using the word RESTOCK.
The walking around in the background halfway through the video SERIOUSLY had me thinking there was someone in my house 🤣
WHAT
So glad I found you. Learning about how this has affected me over the last 6 years.
Love watching your vids while I get ready for bed. You’re so entertaining!❤
I got two things from ULTA few days ago and it was like $50 😭 this is why I shop at target or a drug store for my makeup 😭
prices are so expensive!!
Selena Gomez gotta be a billionaire by now!!! 👀
I love your vibe, your video is actually usefull, it’s an insight critic of haul trend. You get a subscriberesse my lady.
thanks for being here!

THIS is something I've been wondering about as well.
