My mother decorated for every season….including towels. I think it’s ok if you like it. But she stored it and reused the same stuff for years. I do the same, but only with Christmas and I don’t decorate bathrooms. It was important to her because she was very poor as a child, having grown up during the Great Depression. It was also a form of self-expression for her. She wasn’t crafty, but she was great at decor and loved to host.
I know people like this too! They have a lot of seasonal decor and they reuse their stuff for decades. I love this for people who enjoy their decor. Thank you so much for sharing!
My family is the same! However it is always reused items, the only time we buy more is either the yearly ornaments (which go home with whoever receives them or is put in one of the games for next year) or when things break.
I have a lot of respect for the people who have decorations for each season/holiday, remember where they stored it, and put them out each year. That’s legitimately a skill, and I don’t have it. 😂 I have 2 wreaths (one for fall, one for ChristmaJanuary), and I almost couldn’t find one of them this year even though it was objectively exactly where it was supposed to be. 😅
It’s the sweater claws, every time. Any time you see a video and it’s just some manicured nails poking out of sleeves, you know they’re about to try to sell you something you do not need.
as a disabled person i really appreciate that you bring accessibility tools into the conversation. it’s hard to talk about overconsumption without people dragging tools that disabled people use through the dirt. like. sometimes it’s just not for you!!!
I'm glad to hear that you feel this way! I try to think about ability when possible so this means a lot. You're right, sometimes it's just not for you!
Yeah, the occasional nod to accessibility is so appreciated. I think we get so often trained by society to feel guilty for our accessibility needs that to hear accessibility options condemned as 'overconsumption' can make us feel really bad. But I think the line is 'if it genuinely, over a longer span of time, improves your quality of life, that is not overconsumption'. on top of that, many disabled people don't have the funds to splurge on useless stuff, so accessability purchases tend to be well-thought out and not just on impulse. I guess that makes us not the demographic these videos criticise, but it is still super nice to be acknowledged as 'people that might buy this for a good reason'.
@celinec2483 as someone with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome i can say ive purchased some painfully overpriced items to assist in my daily life. Rings for my finger joints that I could have made at home? $100 (the cheap end), im looking at buying a fully body harness to keep my joints in place $300-500, KT tape once/twice a month $30-35 each roll, i could go on forever. But thankfully these products do help me 😭
@@IrrlichtwinterIn my case, when I first watched videos like this, I judged the items from my point of view and didn't think of accessibility. If some of the things are actually useful for you, then go for it. Although I think (and maybe I'm wrong here) most of the time that's a side effect and not what the manufacturers had in mind.
It looks so stressful to just set up! By the time you made it into the bath, the water would be ice cold. Plus, who's sitting in a bathtub for the length of an entire movie? Ick! Get your Beetlejuice McDonalds and soda, grab a cozy blanket, maybe light a scented candle and curl up on the couch with your film. Way easier, less expensive, and more comfortable.
Too much work even if it does look interesting, as a photoshoot photo it looks great but not for proof of concept, the water would be cold before you're even finished prepping, your hands get pruny after 20 minutes, and the film would have barely started by the time it's over. Nothing wrong with playing music or videos but no way should anyone be eating soggy mcdonalds fries and candy either, what happened to not eating half an hour before having a bath or shower anway? 🤔
@@chaoticneutralsheep I always thought the not eating for half an hour rule was for swimming, most people won't cramp up and drown in a few inches of still water. Though I do wonder why people bring stuff like chocolate into warm rooms.
@@hawktalon7890i personally get nauseous from being in a warm/hot water after eating, no matter if it’s a bath or a swimming pool☹️ also that bath video is leaving so many questions like i feel like as soon as she was done filming she started undoing all of that😅
True Must-Haves: • shelter with temperature regulation • nutritious food and clean water • safe friends and family • reasonable access to entertainment and education • clean and comfortable clothes • baby wipes That’s pretty much it 😂 a few of those can be bought in Amazon but most cannot
Honestly the only time i think of it is when you do the relaxing bath. The candles book movie with a drink and a little snack. But other then that it's s weird
I have to soak sometimes to help with pain. Sometimes having a little snack or something to keep my mind off of what I’m actually doing helps me not get sad or frustrated at myself and I can treat it as a self care or luxury rather than the necessity that it really is.
The only time consumables come into my bathroom is when I’m taking a steaming bath for relaxation/ help ease muscle tension and then I have a nice little cool soda because it gets HOT. Snacks is crazy to me tbh.
i kinda get it tbh. i take baths for chronic pain sometimes, but my blood sugar also drops pretty fast, so i like to have smth on hand if i'm gonna be in for a while just in case (to avoid the risk of passing out), and a drink for rehydration. those baths in the tiktoks are definitely A Lot, though
Especially given the fact that smart devices can’t be as easily repaired and stop receiving software updates eventually. That‘s 400 dollars for a brick✨
I work at Goodwill and one of our pricers priced that same exact toaster for cheap (I think it was priced at $6.99), so I bought it because I heard about it and thought it was really cool. It slowly started having problems with toasting bread, so ended up having to throw it away. It was cool to have for awhile, but I definitely would not have paid $400 for it!
@@snailglue9716The "smart" thing I don't understand is those washing machines you can turn on from a distance. Why wouldn't you just turn it on as soon as you shut the lid? It's not like you can LOAD the machine long distance! So what's the point?!?
The excessive bath video... Hannah Alonzo showed another one of this creator's bath videos (as part of self care commentary) and painted such a good picture of how long it takes to set up, and how ridiculous it is especially with the movie being on the side wall. Plus those baths are always up to the brim so clearly the creator is not really getting into that bath after filming, it's just for content. Such a waste of everything to sell a bunch of fancy themed junk.
Yesss! Hannah is amazing) And here my concern is mostly leaf-stickers on the shower glass. It is soooo unnecessary! What's the point since you're inside the shower and can't see them anyway...

I wouldn't trust electronics anywhere near my shower/bathtub, especially as I've almost always lived in places where those aren't enclosed and the water can easily get everywhere.
Regular IKEA lazy susan is cheap, elegant and durable. And if you want your wine cold without watering it down with ice, just throw a few frozen grapes and you're good to go.
I can see using it at house party, like not everybody knows ratios of cocktails. But they pitch them as like everyday use item. Who drinks enough to drink all of it before alcohol evaporates?
Yes!! This is a skill and many guests will appreciate it if you make them a cocktail that is made well. I’ve had the same martini shaker for years & it never fails! The big thing for me is vintage glassware. That’s enough for presentation. I wouldn’t want anything out of a machine that’s hard to clean 🤢.
I’m Australian, so by default I am obsessed with not wasting water. It is a precious resource. Don’t watch videos in the shower ffs. Enjoy your shower, sure, they play a role in relaxation, but ultimately the focus should be on getting clean. Watching TV is for sitting on the sofa, NOT for standing in the shower when you are taking water away from wildlife and farmers. Don’t do it.
Sadly many Americans are clueless about the water crisis, and if their water is not at risk, they don't care about how much their use affects people downstream.
@@catheriner6675 If staying in the shower slightly longer is self care don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it. People who fly private jets and own multiple homes with manicured landscaping should change their ways not you.
Hi! I just wanted to say that I’ve suffered with a genuine addiction to shopping for a long time (trauma response and money being the only control). I’ve been making progress in the last year to break that cycle. Watching your videos has helped me tremendously when it comes to monitoring spending and being more mindful with what I purchase! Especially around holiday with so many sales and value kits, your videos have helped changed my mindset on panic buying these items, and I just wanted to say thank you so much!
I’m in the same boat! I’m rooting for you. I have a long ways to go, im new to this channel but I am in the first stages of working on my shopping addiction.
I can tell your content is MADE for me since as an adhd person, I can be pretty impulsive when it comes to shopping (low dopamine thank you) and I laughed so hard at that first tiktok!

@@shawnaripari It has me rethinking a bunch of stuff but I can't watch your Halloween vids bc I will foam at the mouth. (I love Halloween and I'm trying to get my finances in order)
Another reason why able-bodied folks should skip the drink-makers (Keurig for cocktails is such a great description 😂), is that making your own cocktails is such a fun, social activity. I absolutely love it when my husband makes holiday drinks for our parties. We all crowd around the kitchen island and watch him go into mixologist mode. Those drink machines might be novel the first few times you show them to guests, but ironically the Bartisan removes all the artistry of experimenting and making your own cocktails. There’s nothing left to talk about after a handful of minutes. And as a point of accessibility contention, most of those drink machines look complicated to operate and clean. I’m not sure how helpful they truly are for those who need the accessibility.
There’s also just something better about a handmade drink, my husband makes old fashioneds and it’s just fun hanging out in the kitchen while he does it
I have an energy limiting disability so my self-care is really about respecting my limitations: limiting daily activities, resting when I need to, building in several days of rest when I have to be active for a prolonged period, etc. I also love a good soak with epsom salts in my portable bath that stands in my shower stall when I’m in a lot of pain. These insane bath setups have so much fragrance alone (three different scent items?!?) that the migraine I’d have just walking into the bathroom would keep me from bathing, let alone the happy meal. I can’t imagine how disgusting eating that in a super-scented bath would be. 🤢
My self-care things include listening to music (and singing and dancing to it), making a warm cup of tea or a really cold glass of juice with ice, having a long shower, having a nap, watching youtube videos while tucked in bed, having a chocolate bar or a grilled sandwich, going out to a coffee, wandering in the library or a second hand shop, doing some arts and crafts, seeing people, etc.
Sounds a lot like me! I love to curl up with a warm blanket and homemade chai latte. Other self-care things for me include letting my birds out to play while watching some TV and cooking a small homemade meal like an egg sandwich, buttered noodles or soup :)
The electronic lazy susan looks like an overengineered yet made from cheaper materials and therefore prone to breakage version of the round wooden (and so durable) dining tables with rotating centers in some Asian cultures. Actually had a convo with my mom just last week about how nice it'd be to have a big family dinner around one... a huge round wooden table just feels cozy and inviting. But in a way I can't explain, seeing the electronic plastic version doesn't spark joy in the same way and doesn't make me want it 😅
Also i still wonder what percentage of the "where is that from!!😮🤩where can i get that!?😍" Comments are paid for reaction/engagement accounts to boost the video.
My self care activities: go out for a walk, doodling on a generic lined notebook with black gel pens, dumping my brain contents on pages, and most importantly, get some sleep.
I saw a commercial recently and thought of you IMMEDIATELY!! it was for a store Stop & Shop and it was basically advocating for the customer to buy things she doesn't like to eat cause of a sale price or sauce they won't use because "hunger is talking" and I was thinking i wish Shawna could react to this!!! ❤ Tysm for helping to reframe my mind about my belongings. You saying in a past vid that buying stuff can take away from our future goals has really stuck with me 💞
It was a Stop & Shop commercial. I found it on YT by searching "stop and shop commercial 2024". It's the first one that comes up, 30sec long and posted Feb 2024.
On Replay ,I am Italian and we have used a wooden board for decades as a so called Charcuterie board(Now) because we simply put the meats on and cheeses without pre cutting items .We place knives and spoons etc on the board to get olives ,pickled items and what ever you you add. This was done simply to cut items on the board instead of a plate. To this day it is still being done by my family and friends in southerner Italy. Also I believe the timing of showing more expensive items is because people will naturally spend more on an item during the holiday season. Wanted to just add why I think people are buying tech items(like this toaster) is because some households have everything else in their homes really Tech forward.Just my thoughts.
Lazy susans are great for family meals (and super common in some cultures), but you can get a nice circular solid wood one that’s built like a taaaaank for cheaper than $100. Plus, ours stays on the table year around and isn’t just a special occasions item.
We have a lazy Susan in our cupboard for canned goods and it's super helpful for finding things! :) I'd encourage someone to pick one up if they found it in the thrift store, imo it's really useful for most people
the caramel apple station is crazy bc it's not even gonna heat the caramel up enough to make a proper coating like you just end up paying more for a worse experience
I agree about taking a break from your phone while I shower or take a bath. I also figured out 10 years ago I can use my oven to toast bread, cold pizza and warm anything else up besides buying a dedicated toaster or using my microwave. It’s one less device on my counter and I feel clever each time I get to do it.
@KD-dc2fd I was raised that way too! Everything is made in the stove. And then I married into a family that loves all the different little appliances, it drives me crazy
Favorite self care activities: my number one is a long walk. This helps me destress and have time for myself all in one, and get fresh air and some sun. My second favorite is making myself a tea or taking a long shower. Mostly, just not rushing my evening and relaxing, taking it slow, feels gentle. Beyond that, I think reading can be seen as self care because of how good it is for your brain health. I might also make myself cookies or something like a sweet treat once in a while, too.
A relaxing, like an 'extra' shower only needs some nice music and a candle instead of the overhead light. Even now, watching this video, I got this urge or need for fall vibes, and so I lit a few candles - boom, fall vibes!
Your channel makes me happy cause you actually acknowledge disabled people exist and not many people do that and it makes me smile whenever you acknowledge some things can be helpful for accessibility cause some people are just cruel and throw disabled people under the bus but you’re actually mindful plus you’re listening to comments when people say stuff and that makes me super happy you’re awesome
I'm so happy that you take all perspectives into account! I love 'anti-hauls' but sometimes people just poo poo EVERYTHING. You take into consideration disabilities/mobility as well as just general living conditions. I was about to write something about the water filter, because I unfortunately live somewhere where a chemical plant was unknowingly dumping Chem X into our water supply for 50 years, and while the city has installed it's own reverse osmosis system to clean it out they still do recommend a secondary unit in the house or built into your water supply pipes. So thank you for being real and understanding that everyone has a different story, but also for calling out all this overconsumption. It actually makes me sick to my stomach to think about all the things that end up in landfills, our oceans, and even just the general world due to uninformed buying.
Lmao right off the bat I have to agree about the wine chiller. I used to bartend and I rarely ever used the ones we had in the bar! Only if someone ordered a whole bottle, only for white wine, and 9/10 times it was for outdoor seating, which was only available in the summer. A gathering of people is usually going to finish the bottle(s) of wine before those things even become useful.
at the bar where I work we use like probably 7 a night (max 46 people fit) but people are there for 3+ hours and often order bottles of wine. however the mold would just melt and make things look gross, rather buy a wine cooker for like 5 euros and be also able to quickly use it to keep water or soda colder during dinner without so much extra work
I'm a fairly new subscriber but I just wanted to tell you HOW MUCH your videos are already helping me! For years I've used shopping as a dopamine fix, and while I don't have expensive taste whatsoever it still adds the heck up very quickly, not only on the calculator but in the house! Lol. I've been a bit of a sucker for restocking videos in particular and while I would use the inspiration to do small-scale, budget-friendly versions - I still wouldn't have felt the need to do that at all if I hadn't been so mesmerized by those videos. So because of your videos I'm actually thinking twice before buying something I don't need, and my bank account is already happier! Thank you
These stuff are so opulent and expensive it’s so frustrating as someone who is scraping by on a disability pension. Like if my mum didn’t help me afford my medicine I’d be dead. No joke. How do people have all this money!?
As a spooky woman, I initially liked the Beetlejuice bath. …Then it went off the rails, good lord. I do like taking a very FANCY bath every now and then and I feel like there’s a much cheaper, less wasteful way to do it. Honestly I am pretty happy with some scented candles, music on my phone, and a hot coco in the bath.
$400 for a toaster and the bagel was burnt when she took it out 😂 also these influencers always link the most expensive version of a product instead of a lower cost one…I’m assuming to make more commission. If I ever see anything from a video that I’m considering I search it and immediately find a cheaper one
One of my favorite self care activities is cleaning the house. I invested in a mopping vacuum and as someone with two (soon to be three) dogs, it makes things so much easier and more effective. Another self care thing is makeup. I try not to buy too much and entertain myself by seeing if I can figure out how to use what I have to recreate looks I want to do
22:03 I want to theorise that a lot of simple technology is being over engineered so that people will buy new products when their old is not broken. A toaster is so simple and can work for decades, so they put screens on them so you feel like your stuff look too simple and old. And the good damn apps for everything, couple of years ago I bought a lightbulb that you can change the colour of. After I bought I realised its app controlled not a remote. So this lightbulb stoped working when it randomly lost Wi-Fi connection??? And now they have stoped updating the app, so the user experience is so bad, for a god damn over complicated lightbulb???
And some of these apps come with a subscription as well. The most egregious one I saw a video on was a mattress that came with a a subscription. Without it you can only do like 2 of the features even though the hardware is already there. And the reason is that so many of these companies are startups, they need investor funding, and investors are not just after yearly ROI but monthly, hence the subscriptions.
Your videos at the end of my hectic day feel like my self care. I often feel pressured that I need more because my workplace is a theme park/centered on pressure to consume in mass amounts, but your videos really help to ground me that no one is *actually* living in this way. Thank you so much; lives and hugs! 💕
13:25 This is such a specific use case, but early in my recovery from my ED right after I got out of rehab, I was struggling with showering because of body avoidance. Having something that let me have a video playing in the shower really helped shift the focus so that I could still take care of my hygiene. I don’t use it anymore, but it helped a lot at the time (:

Nothing kills me more than hearing people say they want to REMOVE fluoride, a "harmful chemical", from their tap water. That's how you end up with chronic tooth sensitivity. 😭😭😭
@@ace7086 I used to work at a crunchy Montessori daycare that banned kids from bringing toothpaste with fluoride (bc we taught toothbrushing) but like...what?
I grew up without fluoride in my water and only a very short time did I have city water. I use fluoride-free toothpaste and do have any kind of tooth sensitivity nor a mouth full of cavities. My grown granddaughter who did grow up with fluoride in her water and uses standard toothpaste has extremely sensitive teeth. Fluoride was only put in water to supposedly cut down on cavities. I'm not sure how removing it from water would suddenly cause people's teeth to become sensitive. Fluoride is a byproduct of the phosphate fertilizer industry which makes one wonder how it found its way into our drinking water and tooth products...
My mom and I both will get extremely sensitive teeth if we use fluoridated toothpaste. We have to use fluoride- free sensitive teeth toothpaste. Even toothpaste meant to be sensitive will trigger both of us if it has fluoride in it, so it's 100% the fluoride. My dentist also made it sound like it was very common to have that issue. The good connection between Fluoride and teeth is about cavity prevention. Fluoride works to keep cavities at bay by practically irreversibly binding with material in your teeth's outer layer, making them harder and more impervious to cavities. (Fluoride is an incredibly active ion, which is why it can also disinfect). In my grad classes on Environmental chemistry, I remember the concern with fluoride and chloride in water being more about how they tend to combine with organic compounds during water treatment and make THMs (halogenated methanes). THMs (made from bromide, chloride, or fluoride) are not good for you at all.
We do a caramel apple bar every year, I just use a covered snack tray like a party tray with removable dishes? It was $10 and then I can use it for picnics and charcuterie nights too ❤
At my workplace they sent fake phishing or fraudulent emails to see who would click on them and make them do a mandatory training to prevent data breach and stuff like that. It just made me think, imagine if there were some fake ads or fake stupid products with bad designs, and when you clicked on them you got a warning like: please consume responsibly…aaaand if you have that much money to waste of crap consider giving to charity 😂
The upside to things being advertised to everyone that are helpful for people with disabilities, is it drastically brings to the cost. "Accessible" becomes inaccessible real fast when the market is small, driving the cost up.
I had a towel warmer when I was a kid in Canada. My mom would put my towels and PJs in the dry while I played with my Batman foam soap. (I had Barbies and Hotwheels. Mom was cool that way. All the moms in our neighborhood were.)

‘Harmful chemicals like fluoride’ this guy does know that fluoride is a mineral and the body needs it to survive, right? It’s also in things like oatmeal, grapes and potatoes, but most people aren’t consuming enough so they put it into water, lowering the rates of people who are deficient.

The toaster is GENUINELY so stupid. We own a convection oven that I don’t even think costed 300$ that air fries, toasts, broils, cooks, and like 10 other settings!!! NOT EVEN 400$!!! Why do you need just ONE of those functions for 400$ just because it has a screen on it?! Paying that amount for anything you should be getting at least 10 functions omg 😭

I thought you meant the thing where my brother would see how fast he could make it spin and then mum yells at him for spinning the gravy off the end of the table. maybe my family shouldn't own one...
Chlorine and fluoride have positive uses however they should not be consumed. Fluoride is good for teeth though even that is debated amongst dentists. It is linked to lower IQs when consumed. Chlorine is great for killing all bacteria in the water but no one should actually drink chlorine of course... Even plants do not prefer the chemicals in our treated water.

I could not be arsed to do the Beetlejuice bath. The clean up at the end would undo 50x any self care benefits the bath afforded.
Watching an entire movie in the bath sounds like getting wrinkly hands and cold and not at all relaxed too😅
Too much work even if it does look interesting, as a photoshoot photo it looks great but not for proof of concept, the water would be cold before you're even finished prepping, your hands get pruny after 20 minutes, and the film would have barely started by the time it's over.

I don’t get snacking while taking a bath. It’s the place I get clean, not a place to eat and drink. That’s weird.
@@KD-dc2fd never in my life have I been in the bathroom and said ok , time to get an energy drink.
Nobody needs a toaster with a tablet.
Say it louder!
fr we need to stop over complicating things. not everything needs to be a smart device

I wouldn't trust electronics anywhere near my shower/bathtub, especially as I've almost always lived in places where those aren't enclosed and the water can easily get everywhere.

It’s a lot more fun to build a bar and have basic cocktail tools and come up with creative combos than the weird machines IMO
Right? Like, dear lord, if you love mixed drinks and don't like measuring and pouring.... THEY COME IN CANS AT THE STORE 😭
I can see using it at house party, like not everybody knows ratios of cocktails. But they pitch them as like everyday use item. Who drinks enough to drink all of it before alcohol evaporates?

@@berobero686you can just google them though
I listen to youtube channels like this one in the shower but with a speaker as I’m getting clean. Maybe she’s doing the same. Hopefully.
Yeah sometimes I listen to a video, but it's a multitasking thing haha
I must admit I use mental health, body pain and asthma as an excuse to stay in longer but I think im ready to change that

Except the infomercials were so fake that they were absolutely hilarious to watch.
There’s also just something better about a handmade drink, my husband makes old fashioneds and it’s just fun hanging out in the kitchen while he does it
Who on earth eats an entire happy meal in the bathtub?? Maybe the most offensive thing in that video lol.
your comment killed me 😂
I gotta stop reading comments before a video I just got a shocking spoiler lmaoo
For real, that’s just foul
I have an energy limiting disability so my self-care is really about respecting my limitations: limiting daily activities, resting when I need to, building in several days of rest when I have to be active for a prolonged period, etc. I also love a good soak with epsom salts in my portable bath that stands in my shower stall when I’m in a lot of pain.
These insane bath setups have so much fragrance alone (three different scent items?!?) that the migraine I’d have just walking into the bathroom would keep me from bathing, let alone the happy meal. I can’t imagine how disgusting eating that in a super-scented bath would be. 🤢
I’m in the same situation and approach it in the same way. Lots of forethought on energy levels and rest and balance.
@@Kira_DS9 this is a great list!

Omg I’ve seen this commercial 😂

A gathering of people is usually going to finish the bottle(s) of wine before those things even become useful.
at the bar where I work we use like probably 7 a night (max 46 people fit) but people are there for 3+ hours and often order bottles of wine. however the mold would just melt and make things look gross, rather buy a wine cooker for like 5 euros and be also able to quickly use it to keep water or soda colder during dinner without so much extra work
Honey crisp = amazing apple. Except baking. Then go with granny smith because the tartness works great with the other baking ingredients.

For the toaster with the screen, the heat the toaster produces will eventually ruin the screen. Youll be left with 400$ trash so thats neat
Thank you

It seems strange that they can legally sell something that you put liquor and juice into, but that you can't clean.

And now they have stoped updating the app, so the user experience is so bad, for a god damn over complicated lightbulb???
this is a really interesting idea
And some of these apps come with a subscription as well. The most egregious one I saw a video on was a mattress that came with a a subscription. Without it you can only do like 2 of the features even though the hardware is already there. And the reason is that so many of these companies are startups, they need investor funding, and investors are not just after yearly ROI but monthly, hence the subscriptions.

My towel warmer is throwing it in the dryer for 15 minutes 😂 it’s the only one I can afford
on the lazy susan, when I heard "how chaotic is your family?" that was NOT where I expected that to go.
